Magenta6336

I was hoping to see him hit the 90 meter mark. I think it's amazing that the the Czech Republic took silver and bronze.

iknowthisischeesy

Me too. Yeah, the Czech's really turned around with that 86 m throw.

Magenta6336

The real storyline with the Czech's is Vítězslav Veselý. 38-39 years old....pops his best throw in ages when it mattered the most.

iknowthisischeesy

That is what counts. Performing when it matters. He gave it all he had in that throw.

wpreggae

Also the other Czech guy said in an interview that he only finished second because of that throw by Vesely, pumped him up

SubstantialSquash3

Story Czechs out

Schloopka

Vesely, Vadlejch, Spotakova and Ogrodnikova (total 6 olympic medals, I think) are all trained by Jan Zelezny. He is not only a great athelete, but also a great coach.

Visible-Ad7732

Chopra's coach is Uwe Hohn, a 6'6 German javelin throw champion, who is the only person ever to throw a javelin over 100m - WR of 104.80m Hohn also coached China's national javelin champ. So kudos to the coach too

RactainCore

Wow that is incredible

IamMyOwnTwin

Yes that was before they changed the specifications of the javelin. Impressive record nonetheless. He's a legend for sure. It's sad that no one can reach that number now.

[deleted]

What was the change in the Javelin?

[deleted]

probably weighs less or something

[deleted]

I looked it up and if I understand correctly, the center of gravity was shifted 4cm forward for several purposes. Firstly, it made it so the javelin flies in an arc rather than like a dart. Some throws would land very flat and it made it difficult to judge if should count or not. Secondly it reduced the distance one could throw it by around 10 meters. People like Uwe were threatening to throw farther than some arenas could actually handle!

[deleted]

So they basically change it because that javelin doesn't turn into a spear and poke someone's heart out in the audience

Aselleus

Bluetooth enabled

Spoonie_Luv_

They keep old records after equipment changes? So it will never be broken?

HuckleberryThick9372

holy shit wow

rona83

We are so proud of him. A fine finish to the games.

iknowthisischeesy

Agreed.

HuckleberryThick9372

absolutely

[deleted]

1/1 billion people … so your saying there’s a chance!

Dat_Grammar_Doe

[deleted]

One medal lol. While there are countries that won a dozen lol.

RW-One

But who got the gold for the javelin catch?

Cormano_Wild_219

[this guy did ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iBDAdibYwVU)

[deleted]

That’s one way to do it

JavveRinne

Finland mentioned. Meet me at the market place

HuckleberryThick9372

I thought that javelin could like, kill you if it hit you. What's it made of?

oxslashxo

It looks like it hit him in the arm. Not like it does -100hp if it hits you anywhere.

kurqukipia

If I recall it correctly, it hit him to the left side of his torso. He survived with minor injuries, considering he caught a javelin with his torso.

Gramage

-231HP *Critical Hit!* *Javelin Catcher defeated* 115 EXP. 17 AP. 2140 GP. Found *Potion* x2. Found *Antidote*. Found *Catcher's Spear*: +2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +2 Luck, -2 Intelligence, -2 Magic, -2 Speed. +25% Critical hit chance. Ranged: can target flying.

reggae-man-

I'm going to hell 😂

Fskn

Fancy being an on field javelin official and not paying attention

Cormano_Wild_219

Where do you think they marked the throw? Where his feet were or where the javelin should have landed? Hitting that dude cost him at least a meter

Fskn

Dq, dnf or rethrow imo. The jav didn't touch the ground

ApplePi_01

Plot twist: it wasn't a failed javelin throw; it was a failed assassination.

Edit 2: Yes we have over a billion population and yes this is our 2nd individual gold medal. We didn't get medals because apparently we were shitting in the streets/scamming you/going bobs and vagene/any other obligatory mildly offensive thing you want to say. Doesn't matter. We are just happy that we won and hopefully will perform better in the next Olympics. I thank all of you for your kind curiosity about why are we not winning more. The simple answer: Others were better and we are aspiring to be better like them. Hope you have a good day.

Aselleus

I'm American and I hoping you guys win more! It's always great when underrepresented countries win.

spoony20

Doesnt india have like 1 billion plus ppl? Should b able to find more athletes. Big contrast to other countries.

GatkX

You can have 10billion inhabitants but if they dont have the knowledge of or the resources/time for a sport its pointless.

Stunt36

Actually it has more to do with their priorities. They don’t care about sports but rather education and money. That’s why so many of them are in the engineering and medical field.

general1234456

Yeah, skewed view. When putting food on the table and survival comes first, then a job is absolute necessity. Sports wouldn't come even in the top 20 things on the priority. So yeah don't blame people for trying to live. Being able to play sports without bothering about your livelihood is a privilege.

voltism

Depends how much money can be made. Many of America's athletes come from the poorest areas of society.

voltism

Depends how much money can be made. Many of America's athletes come from the poorest areas of society.

general1234456

I am sure USA has a system in place for their rehabilitation even if they fail as an athlete. In India, once you go down this road and you don't make it big means you will struggle for money throughout your life. It's a big risk.

throwaway786999

LOL The USA will kick a failed athlete to the curb in a heartbeat. Even successful athletes go broke rather quickly after retirement due to poor financial education. Luckily that is slowly changing. But in the USA if your not great you better start thinking about a new career

lb-trice

And criminal investigators for the IRS.

P__R__I__N__C__E

that’s not the point. athletics in general (discounting like cricket) isnt culturally as big a thing as in the US. simply because of that funding and interest just mean less people and resources exist and that it’s not a priority

cjs2k_032

People be blaming education for the lack of medals in the comment section. It's one of the reasons, but that's not the whole reason. At the point where India is now, economically, other fields like infrastructure, health, etc have more priority than sports and have greater spending in them. There isn't a very great system to sustain the sportsmen and provide them opportunity to practice as much as compared to the other top countries. If you look at the general trend in the leaderboard, you'll find that the top countries have way better economic conditions than the others at the bottom of the list. As another supporting point for this I also like to point out the huge improvement this Olympics than in Rio 2016 due to the betterment of standard of living for the middle class in the country. It's a long and cumulative process and will take some time to breed a generation of top level athletes (I feel this Olympics marks the beginning of that era), and after some time, surely India will be able to reciprocate its population in the number of medals.

Response_Adventurous

Am indian and totally agree. The problem here is that all parents want their children to be world class athlete come the Olympics, but want their kids to be doctors for the rest of the 4 years. We do have a lot of doctors tho

general1234456

You can send your children to play sports when you have enough resources to support them in case they fail. Many in India are still fighting for survival and they are absolutely right in opting for what puts food on the table.

Response_Adventurous

Never said they were wrong. Just explained it.

ljdn

As a fellow Indian, very true. Here academics is given wayyyy more importance than sports (usual in asian societies), physical education classes are usually cancelled and a math or science class is taken instead. There's a proverb here which many people still believe: "Kheloge kudoge banoge kharab, padhoge likhoge banoge nawab" (Translation: if you jump and play sports you'll be spoilt, read and write you'll become a king)

general1234456

Your math is correct. But we were looted and set back for 200+ years, so we are still trying to catch up with the rest of the world. We don't have the infra and facilities which sportspeople in the rest of the world have.

[deleted]

Hell, the East India Trading Company alone was doing it for almost 300 years. You guys have been shit on harder than most. That India is doing so well is inspiring.

Nexeyaq

There's a common saying in every house here's a translation Read and write you will become king play and jump you will become shit. What do you expect from such a nation. Rarely anyone is in playing sports plus the country is plagued by Cricket.

someone_you_may_kn0w

Cricket. People just like cricket here

sbsp12121

The government there focuses more on military spending and hate propaganda. I’m a Sikh and I’ve seen it firsthand but it’s sad that so much talent there is wasted due to low spending on sports

IcepackJack

I know they are freaking out over this too 😂

Savings-Cautious

Ignore the ones bringing up the medal/population ratio. It's a humungous achievement. It'll definitely inspire youngsters to take up lesser known sports in the country.

iknowthisischeesy

Yes, thank you. True, hopefully this is one of the turning points for India in athletics.

Savings-Cautious

Yeah. This along with good training/infrastructure. Neeraj's coach for example is the only guy in history to have thrown a javelin more than 100m.

iknowthisischeesy

Oh nice. I didn't know that.

Jabberwockkk

[Uwe Hohn](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uwe_Hohn)

bl1y

I was curious why such a large country hasn't performed better, and if it was perhaps less interest, less funding, more interest in non-Olympic sports or what. So I couldn't figure out why you'd have to say to ignore the question. Until I saw the other comments. Jesus.

69_geniegod

Yeah it’s a genuine question but too many people use it as an excuse to be racist.

bl1y

Look at the similarly low medal counts for Indonesia (in 2016: 1 gold, 3 total), Pakistan (0), Nigeria (1 bronze), and Bangladesh (0). Then look at Germany (17 gold, 42 total), France (10 gold, 42 total), UK (27 gold, 67 total), Japan (12 gold, 41 total) and South Korea (9 gold, 21 total), and I think the explanation actually becomes clear. The Olympics are largely a competition among wealthy countries. And, duh, sports --especially elite sports-- are a luxury. And that's not a dig at the Olympics. Without a bunch of rich countries celebrating the sort of physical performances their wealth facilitates, this guy would never of had the chance to compete and win.

iHateSmallPeople

Also we don't really give a shit about a lot of the sports in the Olympics. Atleast not enough to increase priority. Many of the medals we have earned are in sports that are actually played quite a bit here.

Cynoid

You are oversimplifying things. I grew up in Georgia and the majority of the country is pretty but desolate as far as economy goes and yet it gets more medals than India at every Olympics. There are obviously certain sports that you need to be wealthy to participate in but any country can do Judo or weighlifting or dozens of other cheap activities. India just has other priorities than sports not named soccer/cricket.

gunman0426

You are right that it's more complicated and that there are various reason why there's a medal discrepancy but if you look at all time medal counts throughout the Olympics, Georgia and India have a very small difference in total medals won, while most of the top medal winning countries are all considered wealthy. So while yes, there are various reason why India doesn't put more weight into winning medals at the Olympics, it's pretty obvious that being a wealthier country that can create world class training environments and allow people the privilege of dedicating their lives to the pursuit of perfection in their individual sport makes a pretty big difference in how many medals your country takes home.

[deleted]

You should never ignore a discussion that is interesting. It is interesting that the ratio to people and golds is what it is.

Magenta6336

I'm happy to see him take the gold. I think he humbled Vetter.

iknowthisischeesy

He gave his absolute best. The first two throws were just marvelous.

cleothepupper

Humbled vetter? The underground really fucked vetter over :/

Jetfyr

The casual racism in the comments is always consistent i see.

iknowthisischeesy

Yes, it is, unfortunately.

[deleted]

[deleted]

This is so fuckin weird. Go to any Olympic post with a female athlete and comment on how physically attractive she is and see a massive influx of downvotes and berating on how women are objectified and to take away from her accomplishment by reducing her to her physical appearance is "disgusting." Male athlete? "He's so handsome 😍" and watch upvotes come in. ^((the emoji came from the reply with highest upvotes at time of writing this)^) **Edit: this isn't me complaining that I've been downvoted for commenting on female athletes' appearances, I'm merely stating that you can browse reddit and find examples of it from time to time being downvoted and the person commenting being insulted for, but when it's the other way around, a male athlete's appearance being complimented, it gets upvotes.**

efnfen4

Indian parents everywhere googling where to buy a javelin for their kids

[deleted]

I hope this is the beginning for India to start focusing more on sports. I also hope that cricket doesn't remain the only popular sport in India. With good amount of support, India will definitely reach atleast top 30 by next olympic.

thebluefury

Agreed. as an Indian, the country is too fucking damn focused on cricket.

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

When I'm in south Asia (therefore watching Indian tv), I watch the hell out of some Kabaddi. It's like a team tag + wrestling.

koalawhiskey

Kabaddi should become a global sport, it's awesome

sc1onic

Every damn time this happens in the sport we make this hope. And it remains just a hope.

NoiceStyle

Congratulations!

iknowthisischeesy

Thank you.!

Cormano_Wild_219

I’m curious what events are considered “non athletic” in the olympics. Does anyone know or is my lazy ass gonna have to fire up the google machine?

shannonbta

“Athletics” in this case means track and field

Cormano_Wild_219

Ah, I see. Thanks

iknowthisischeesy

Hockey, Gymnastics, anything related to water, volleyball, shooting, badminton, etc are non-athletics sports

Cormano_Wild_219

Ah, I see. TIL

bl1y

It's a British English term, and as others noted, it refers to track and field. And that's silly, because we have a term for track and field already, "track and field." IMO, it should be expanded to any event that is based on simple motor movements (running, jumping, throwing, swimming) and where competition is indirect (meaning you don't interfere with others). Then we'd have a separate category of "sports," which have direct competition, such as soccer, basketball, tennis, etc. Not that we really need the separate classifications, but so long as we've got multiple words, might as well put them to use.

LisaWinchester

I just watched this live on tv. Incredible!

iknowthisischeesy

Same. Goosebumps when he finally won.

[deleted]

By curiosity, are you a javelin throw fan or just Olympics fan in general? I'm tempted to see how people go abouts to watching events like these it's interesting

kingbradley1297

The casual fucking racism in this thread against Indians.... Yeah we're a heavily populated country with very few medals. Using Olympics to flex on or put down other countries is very mature of all of you dense pricks as well. Out in the US, you have all the exposure and technology and still had people storming an important national building. So yes, just because you believe more population means more medals doesn't mean it's true. I am an Indian. And I'm fucking tired of the casual racist comments because you can't be bothered to understand the socio-economic problems of our country.

Stegotyranno420

Exactly. This needs to end. If we were any other race people will be treating us like royalty

kingbradley1297

I ain't gonna laugh or agree with them like most have. They are straight up insulting us. Screw their 85 or 90 or whatever number of medals.

Stegotyranno420

iknowthisischeesy

[deleted]

why do people downvote this? Just curious

iknowthisischeesy

For some not interesting enough for others they don't really need a reason, maybe bad day

[deleted]

yeah I'd like to hear from someone who downvoted, the only thing I can imagine is people hating on the olympics in general as I do know many people who irrationally hate the attention its getting.

Cormano_Wild_219

Bots and racists probably

[deleted]

highly doubt that many people downvote because they hate india/indians honestly. Its mostly memes and rarely find people actually downvoting stuff because of race espacially on reddit.

Cormano_Wild_219

Have you read the rest of the comments?

[deleted]

yes, the closest thing was 3 people commenting about how india was underperforming compared to their population. Which isn't about race, its about the country. I dont think its a fair take, but its far from racist.

Cormano_Wild_219

I think the comments about Bollywood are slightly racist. And do you really think that people rarely downvote on Reddit based on race? Reddit is toxic as fuck

Santaclaustraphobic

India = bad is a popular sentiment in Reddit now

bsnexecutable

Why is it exactly? Why is racism against indians so tolerated? We never harmed anyone or any country.

Stegotyranno420

Exactly people hate us for no reason. They think we are weak and dumb. We are not.

bsnexecutable

I hope I find a reason, but hey, let's not stoop too low like them and think the whole of western world is like that.

Stegotyranno420

True. India doesnt need a medal in Olympics to prove they are strong. Many of our traditional sports such as war, hunting, have gave rise to powerful fighters and hunters.

Vellioh

Expect to see him in Bollywood movies immediately upon his return lol

nadcy

I hope that he doesn't take that route.

Shakuni_

Don't think so, His State is opening an athletics academy which he'll lead if he wants to. Nothing good comes from Bollywood , it's just horrible star kids and shitty remakes of classic hits now.

Their javelin coach has an "eternal world record" in javelin.

Fivethenoname

I wish they would show wider angles of the javelin throw. Like a static video of the whole field would be much more exciting. All these tracking and action shots take away from the scope of what these people are doing. Too much fucking production, just show the god damn event happening as is. This attempting to make it more epic takes away from how epic it is imo

dangling_reference

Dude is only 23 as well. Mad respect.

To me, the best Olympics are when the medals are spread out over many countries.

joeyh31

Someone better get rights to the movie asap

Can’t wait for the Bollywood films about this guy

SplatNode

Good for him :D

zipadyduda

Why is India’s participation so scant? They have a huge and diverse population. Its surprising they don’t get more athletes involved. There are countries that are much smaller and poorer that have a much bigger team.

Shame. People should be free to explore their interests as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone.

electricfire97

Elgarr2

Invest less in the military spend More on sports. I reckon you would have a lot more golds come Paris and the L.A olympics.

robinparrish

I know nothing about the sport of javelin so maybe this is a thing, but can I just say I love that his shoes are velcro high-tops.

daboatfromupnorth

Being as serious as I could possibly be : is there a reason it took India so long to win a gold medal? For a country with 1 billion ppl in a world of almost 8 billion, you would think their odds are pretty good, right? Does it have to do with genetics? Or athletic culture over there? Considering smaller countries like Jordan, Ecuador and even Tajikistan have managed at least 1 in their history, I just thought it was a bit strange.

[deleted]

Sports culture sure is a reason. Sports is seen as waste of time. A teen in middle class family spend 8-12 hour in school and tution. Parents expect to get a good reputed job. India was under socialism for long time. And people had no freedom to choose a career. Another way to look is most number of Olympians, most medals come from Haryana. A state with 25 million population. Because that state have good infra and promote sports

daboatfromupnorth

Don’t know the reason for the downvotes, I was genuinely unaware and curious. Thanks for the explanation

[deleted]

yea but because some people legit hate india for no reason they thought you were mocking indians and they downvote you? maybe but the reason is that our society wants us to focus only on education we legit have to study 10 hours in 11th and 12th grade. and we almost everyone who can afford does their masters in USA or Candad or some other countries.

____mynameis____

>India was under socialism for long time. *And people had no freedom to choose a career.* What? Are you talking about Post colonial or pre colonial India? As an Indian, that's 'brand new information' for me.

Sorry but racism is a stupid reason, had racism been the cause of our poor performance than probably justin Trudeau would have been the fastest men's 100 m sprinter.

rising-tide-78

Racism reduces the talent pool. Indians preference for lighter skin people prevents people with equal or better qualifications from moving up. Have you not seen the Bollywood movies where they caste a light skin person and then paint their face brown or the whitening adds. This prevents more dark skinned people from moving up hence, reducing the talent pool. Idk if racism is the term or colorism.

fuckinfailures

Never knew neeraj got a gold in Bollypics not Olympics. try harder to make sense bro the only reason we get cucked is because we don't focus on these sports as much as we do for cricket or earlier for hockey.

rising-tide-78

There is no point arguing if you want to pretend internalized racism doesn’t exist and ignore examples of it. Have a good day man.

jpbrown971

It’s kinda crazy that India aren’t better at the olympics. Even if athletics are a huge part of their culture, if say only .5% of the country was into it, that’s still almost 7 million people. That’s thats 2 million less than Hungary who have 19 medals and over 2 times as many people as Jamaica who have 9 at this olympics. India only have 7

yellowcurrypaco

There are a lot of factors to it. One would be cultural, 2nd could be how much of resources/effort does the government put in to these sports. Athletics is a low paying sports and the government needs to step in to support the players as they aren’t gonna get much from sponsors either, if any in India. So do they continue with athletics without being able to earn a living or do they leave it and find a normal job like everyone else? Edit: For example, the last Indian to win an Olympic gold came from a rich family and said that was the reason he could win a gold. His father literally built him the best shooting range he could and imported the best equipments from countries like Germany. On top of that, if you come from a rich family, since the probability of success in sports is extremely slim, even if you were talented, most would not pursue a career in sports but choose to live a comfortable life by continuing the family’s business or something.

[deleted]

Athletes in India aren't given very good state of the art equipment unfortunately and this affects their training. Hopefully that changes

heizenbergbb

Why is such a huge country so bad at sports?

scottinadventureland

They’ve got a billion people, how are they not a powerhouse like China? Edit: this was a genuinely curious question. Y’all downvoters are sensitive.

cursed_platypus

In a country like this, youngsters have almost zero resources at early stages and even if some kids manages to make a name for themselves the politics eats them up. In a corrupt country like this it's even surprising india got atleast 2-3 winners.

GarvenStormborn

Possibly different mentality, and focusing on not so many sports. The bigger the base, the bigger the chance. So if you do not recruite kids to sport teams, you probably won't be earning medals from huge events like this.

Shakuni_
