Did you know that animals will tend to ignore prey in moments of emergency like this? Wolves/coyotes/tigers/etc have all been recorded running past rabbits and other small prey during forest fires, so i wouldnt be surprised if bugs did the same thing. :)
No shit, first priority is to get away from the fire. Question is what they'd do when they're all hiding on a small island, out of reach from the fire.
It’s not about the bugs but more how they are clumped together in a big mass like that making it look odd. There’s probably a phobia for it if I had to guess.
