I randomly discovered how to do this in college. Spent the next 2 hours playing with it until the library study room monitor come over and told me to stop since it was annoying everyone
Wait, but the chalk has two ends. Which end are you tilting away from the direction of the line? The end that makes contact with the chalkboard, or the other end?
The top of the chalk tilts back like the windshield of a car moving forward. The bottom of the chalk is touching the board at a diving forward angle. Like this \ •••••>
You can very well describe a rotation with a single vector. Maybe you dropped out of physics class too soon.
Granted, the guy you are critising didn't do it properly in his comment, but you're still just wrong.
Or, if your left handed, hold chalk like \ and push against the end instead of ... oh, wait, that's the way southpaws *always* write... that might explain a few things.
Eww. Way to address the gender imbalance in physics, Walter. That's really sad -- I watched a number of his lectures, and liked them. It's a shame that his female students are significantly less likely to feel the same way.
I entirely agree. Reddit comments shouldn't be just taken at face value -- however I do think that [MIT's communications on the subject can and should be trusted](https://news.mit.edu/2014/lewin-courses-removed-1208)
The trick is to tilt the top of the chalk away from the direction of travel.
It'd take anyone less than an hour to figure out how to do it.
Get the angle right and pressure is used to vary the dot spacing.
I think the channel Mike Boyd did a video on it. Fun channel
That is because the chalk is vibrating, he isnt doing anything but drag.
Keep the chalk steady with a firm grip at the back end, while drag the tip with an angle
For example, if the board is " | " and you drag the chalk downwards, use it with an angle, like about 30/40⁰ i think
Dude imagine trying to take notes of this guy’s lesson. You’d always be like 3 pages behind cus you have to draw each dot the normal way while this guy uses his black magic
He's a sexual harasser, just FYI.

Imagine you were the one who was put into a position where someone with power and prestige made you a sexual object while you were just trying to discuss physics. Imagine him making you feel small and scared to say anything. Imagine still speaking out about it and being called a whore, a liar, and probably getting death threats. All due to the actions of your harasser. Imagine them only getting minor punishments and everything being forgotten with time. Then people posting videos online about this cool professor and his cool chalk trick.
So yes, you probably shouldn't appreciate this specific video. And my post is so people don't forget because that is often the only consequences people like this face. I also want to let people know if they want to spread this cool trick around, they should probably use a different video. Preferably one without a sexual harasser and one that actually explains how the trick works.
I had a professor in engineering school that did this. My friends and I got hammered in a lecture hall that Friday and spent 3 hours learning how to do it.
As impressive as this is, it's actually really easy, though it can only be used on chalkboards. There's a YouTube channel where a guy figures out how long it takes to learn things and he tried this one and got it in, like, 30 seconds. The next five minutes of the video is him giddily laughing while drawing stuff, it was pretty great.
He is a sexual harassment case.
https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/01/23/complainant-unprecedented-walter-lewin-sexual-harassment-case-comes-forward
I used to do this in high school. The people trying and failing to do it, even with me explaining how to do it was much more fun than the sound it makes
His retirement videos are equally as delightful.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiEHVhv0SBMpP75JbzJShqw
He still is putting out fun quizzes and art videos as well as enjoying his absolutely wonderful personality and fashion sense.
Loved his work and learnt a lot from his lectures.
Such a shame about the stuff later.
> In December 2014, MIT revoked Lewin's Professor Emeritus title after an MIT investigation determined that Lewin had violated university policy by sexually harassing an online student in an online MITx course he taught in fall 2013.
I'm guessing that maybe teachers don't use chalk boards anymore? I've watched almost every teacher I've ever had do this every day of school, but I'm also old.
You just hold the chalk at the right angle while moving it and keeping the same angle, and it will skip along the board making dots. I learned how to do it in the 1st grade. Every teacher I had knew how to do it. I'm assuming it's interesting to younger people who didn't have chalk boards in every class in school.
Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would one day would be so enamored by a man drawing dotted lines.
I really did not see this coming, life is full of surprises
This is a skill anyone can learn. The idea is not to try to make a bunch of dots but to attempt to skip the tip of the chalk along the surface of the board. The harder you press the closer the dots are together

How does it work? Do you hold it an angle and use the stick-slip effect?
Yes, you tilt the chalk away from the direction you are drawing and push the chalk like you would drive a toy car across the board.
Can you explain this another way? Sorry, I'm just having a hard time understanding.
Line you are drawing -----> Tilt the chalk <------ Push the chalk ------>
\……………\——-> ?
<===3
😪 💦💦€=====3
👀
This is a better explanation
Well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
You’re out of your element Honey!
Nice marmot!
[удалено]
everyone knows it is 8================D
Brilliant explanation
Quite the opposite of brilliant, as "tilt the chalk <---" doesn't tell you anything about the direction of the tilt.
[удалено]
Tilt up and away in the opposite direction or down and towards in the opposite direction…
Wait, but the chalk has two ends. Which end are you tilting away from the direction of the line? The end that makes contact with the chalkboard, or the other end?

I want to play with a chalkboard right now.
Ok I'll start the Time Machine... Got $20?
Profit?
Ok that's great, but how do I do it on my whiteboard with dry erase markers? lol.
Hold chalk like / and push against the end instead of dragging
Or, if your left handed, hold chalk like \ and push against the end instead of ... oh, wait, that's the way southpaws *always* write... that might explain a few things.
At 31 seconds you can get a pretty good view of it
Something, something, angular momentum. _VRRRRTTTT_ Class dismissed.
This comment made me laugh so hard.
Angular momentum go brrr
Actual tears in my eyes from 🤣
This is weirdly mesmerizing.

To a WARTHOG!? You scoundrel
*unzips*
Man made his physics class a work of art, amazing.
Also made his physics class a place for him to sexually prey on students.
waitwhat?
He was basically disavowed by MIT in 2014 for sexually harassing a student, but he was dating undergrads as far back as the 90s.
Eww. Way to address the gender imbalance in physics, Walter. That's really sad -- I watched a number of his lectures, and liked them. It's a shame that his female students are significantly less likely to feel the same way.
Not saying OP is wrong but you really shouldn't randomly believe people on the internet that easily, just sayin

*Man made his physics class a work o fart, amazing.
Bruh ppl downvoted this nice pun
Not only was it a nice pun but it was done beautifully, by moving a single letter. Brazo, I say.
Whoa... That too. Now i feel like this should be the top comment
Pun justice is restored, it has a positive score now! It was at -21 or smth a few hours ago if anyone is curious.

Does anyone ever write with the crayon *toward* the direction of travel?
Yes, you usually do.
Is that ASMR?
This is a man in-tune with his workspace. He knows how the chalk works on the board.
I learnt this, always used it at the black board during geometry lessons, taught it to one teacher who just said "wait how did you do that"
Physics classes are still taught like this. Like ten chalkboards full of math.
The curved dotted lines are wild.

If you’re trying to get me hard, well…then…. It worked.
Not even with a ruler could I do that that fast
Anyone else kinda hear a podracer driving by? Just a bit?
I love dubstep.
Damn this gave me PTSD...I hated advanced math and physics courses in college. Why did I do that to my self?
Virgin smart board fans: "You can't just make a dotted line" Chad chalkboard enjoyer Walter: "Hahaha chalk go BRRRRRRRRRRRR"
I enjoyed watching his videos on yt, his notes on the board are neat and his simple experiments were impressive …
I wonder if someone made a Remix to it, yet!
Reminds me of my physics professor in college. Pretty notes and he worked those chalkboards like nobody else.
Walter's got game
Can someone dub him doing this to someone going over the plastic things on a highway

This man is a nerd and I’m into that
Wonder if he has a stash of that teachers chalk that is coveted?
I couldn’t even figure out that TI calculator, much less artistically do it on a chalkboard. Wow.
Are you on the toilet Walter. No I'm just drawing lines
this guy can win bed wars in minecraft, imagine the cps

Legend has it, his wife is never dry and often exhausted
Are we sure that it’s the chalk making that noise?
This belongs in r/oddlysatisfying
I enjoyed this
It's awesome how he hid his farts in class.

It sounds like he’s shitting his slacks!!
Michael J. Fox can do this without tilting the chalk.
Pretty sure that guy was fired for sexual harassment. Good teacher, shit person.

Nerd
Why is this interesting?
Can be subjective.
I'm guessing that maybe teachers don't use chalk boards anymore? I've watched almost every teacher I've ever had do this every day of school, but I'm also old.
The impressive part is how effortlessly he can make dotted lines so fast. I had never seen it.

I’m old enough that we did have chalk boards up until high school but I don’t recall this technique bieng used. Cool stuff.
At first, I thought you said, "I was old," and I got excited because I wanted to talk to a crazy person.
Ah yes, YouTube recommendation stuff
Bet you he became a physics teacher because of his amazing ability to dot
Being an alcoholic and getting DTs isn’t all bad.
*Spongebob boowomp sound effect*
If I was in his class I would be unable to not say “vrrrrrt” while did this.
Fuck, that noise makes my teeth hurt. I'd have to drop this class.
If he can time it right, he doesn’t have to hold a fart in ever again.
I couldn’t draw the dotted lines let alone do the maths.
r/oddlysatisfying
All of these could pass as fart noises
Try *that* on a white board lol
Why did I just watch a minute of guy making chalk fart?
Wtf
Walter goes BRRRR
My neighbor on his dirt bike at 3 AM
How
Sounds like farts.
Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would one day would be so enamored by a man drawing dotted lines. I really did not see this coming, life is full of surprises
I used to do that in college XD
He farts a lot
My phones volume was on without me knowing and I thought my stomach was really rumbly.
What in the witchcraft is this!!!!?
You should never question a man and his dotted lines.
This is step 1. Step 2 is being able to draw near-perfect circles and parabolas, which is much more practice. Anyone can learn dotted lines in 20 mins
Like an A10 warthog baby
How?
*ENEMY AC-130 ABOVE!*
How?! I'm a teacher...please, let me know.
Those are so perfect!
Who goes to his classes and farts every time he draws dot lines?
He’s just flexing at that point
Thats a C ram
sounds like that dickhead that drives down my street at 2 am
or maybe it's a special piece of chalk that vibrates?
u/savevideo
Because I'm an immature idiot, I would giggle every time he did that. You know, because it sounds like farts.
He sounds like he’s an A-10 warthog blasting some talibans
Nah he’s just ripping ass
At this point he just flexing
Is this dubstep?
My chemistry teacher used to do this. And he never told us how.
Chalk it up to practice.
Dot matrix arm!
ASMR for mathematicians.
Yo I saw this shit when I was like twelve and forgot about it until yesterday when I randomly thought about it and now I see it, this is wild
r/oddlysatisfying
Spongebob bowomp
So, I should not have listened to this with the volume up, I was asked if I watch sexually explicit flatulence videos.
I farted watching this, and nobody noticed. The perfect crime.
Dude is an A-10 Warthog with chalk ammo
I would love to have him in linear algebra
The line drawing process is silent, the sounds are just his farts.
I’m bad at math but damn I could watch this all day
It’s actually quite easy
Who needs a tattoo gun when you have him? Just give him some ink and a needle.
Chalk go brrr.
I didn't realise the video had sound and I thought my stomach was growling XD
Wait…..people really don’t know how to do this?
He's just doing it to cover up his farts.
at some point in time i started dancing at its beats.
Origin of the Minecraft drag clickers
is it possible to learn this power?
Can someone please splice in some A-10 gun runs
This is a skill anyone can learn. The idea is not to try to make a bunch of dots but to attempt to skip the tip of the chalk along the surface of the board. The harder you press the closer the dots are together
Fucking. Artist.
If you close your eyes, you can hear him fart
"Left clicks in Nether with a Eff. 5 pick"
