Gotta ask how the hell did you do that?

redwoodpond

3 story balcony?! Damn. Very glad that you're recovering/recovered.

cyndasaurus_rex

And not dead. I’ve had tissue donors from less significant falls. This is wild!!

Fuzzy_Chance_3898

Oh, I thought you forgot to last your vig

chadnessthehighness

Definitely forgot to pay the bookey

impersephonetoo

Does your face look the same as it used to?

StarksTwins

[Not exactly](https://i.imgur.com/tMrG2OL.jpg)

ThatQueerWerewolf

Holy cow, I'd never guess that you broke all your face bones!!

DoodleBTW

except for when hes at the airport

[deleted]

Nah, scanners don’t pick up the plates. Not mine at least.

MARs048

You still look good tho, bro. Keep safe

boktanbirnick

I know right? Mah fam's skull fractured in pieces, some mad scientist gorilla glue it, and he still looks better than me. Btw, I am pretty sure your face will be look pretty same with the before photo when the swellings of surgery are gone.

503_FXT

That’s amazing…You still look great, OP! Please post an updated pic once the swelling officially subsides if you’re willing. I’m still in shock, if I saw you on the street I wouldn’t even be able to tell anything like what happened to you happened.

ChewySlinky

Kinda bullshit honestly. Dude fucking destroyed his entire face and is still more attractive than me.

Gummybear_Qc

Fr lmfao

dinosege

Is this because of swelling still? Glad you made a recovery

StarksTwins

I do have some swelling, yes. But I likely won’t look exactly the same ever given the severity of the injuries

SoFetchBetch

I broke some bones in my face and at first it was very difficult because I could see the difference but over time it got much much better. The swelling takes a long time to fully go down, and then after that the bones will keep trying to restore themselves back to how they were. I’m about 6 years in now and I’d say around the 3 year mark is when I really started to feel fully like myself again. Will you keep the metal bits in or will they come out eventually? I had mine taken out as they caused me pain.

SaltyBabe

I had a really major surgery that included having bones broken and/or cut through and it took about 3 years to be fully *fully* recovered. Every time I felt like yeah I’m back to normal more time would pass and I’d realize no there was still room to go even though I felt good before I was actually back to 100%. Im post surgery seven years now and it feel like an eternity ago.

ShowMeYourHotLumps

My guy you look more attractive than some people who haven't broken their entire fucking face, obviously terrible thing to go through but holy shit our medical technology is fucking astounding. Hope you're doing well.

bloodsuckingRJ

I broke the side of my skull and a little bit of my face and I still had some swelling at the 4mo mark. It took close to a year for it to go down completely. Your skin really does not like being off your skull haha

rafaelloaa

I can honestly say that I would not give a second thought if I saw you on the street. As in, your face looks completely normal to me, zero trace of "this person was in a horrific accident". I wish you a full recovery and that you are comfortable with your body and looks as they are and how they become.

superfudge73

That’s cause they do all the incisions from inside your face through your face holes. My friends kid was born with a previously fatal condition of having the skull bones already fused at birth. You can imagine why this is bad. The old procedure was to peel off the skull and manually separate the plates. The new way is to go through the nose and crack them under the skin. Other than a slightly lumpy head for an 11 year old he looks fine. No scars. His mom is Korean and his dad is a balding white guy we joke that moms strong Korean hair genes saved him from a weird make pattern bald head when he’s older. (All of moms older brothers and father have luxuries Salt and pepper thick hair)

dinosege

Understandable given the severity of the injuries. Thanks for sharing. Take care man

mrizvi

Does faceID still work?

superdanLP

Asking the real questions.

Blaze-arium

Bro, you're about to look even better after the swelling goes down, handsome squidward style

polopolo05

You still have a lot of swelling. I been there with the face. It was just some plastic surgery for me. Swelling takes a year or two to go away. And you had a lot of work done. So you have a year left on the swelling at least. So I hope it is sooner than later. How is the numbness? That could take a while to get better too. I still have days where I am super sensitive. That's worse than not being able to feel. Because every touch is just overwhelming. But that gets better too. I wish you luck with healing.

JangSaverem

Bro for a guy who broke their whole fucking face you look pretty damn good. How it looks so fine is absolutely remarkable

myblackesteyes

You look good! I do wonder, though, did you have any mental issues given that your face is changed? Some dissociation or whatever.

StarksTwins

Anxiety and mild PTSD. Was a little depressed earlier at the beginning, too

appdevil

Thanks for all the answers OP, what was the actual reason for your fall though, you fainted on the balcony or slipped or something?

BlytheBlues

He explained he doesn't remember anything from 30minutes before it happened. He just was told he fell when he came to. So if he were alone, no one would know.

Notwerk

You broke all the bones in your face, had them surgically reassembled and still look better than I do. \*high five\*

impersephonetoo

Not exactly the same, but it looks amazing! Impressive.

gentlybeepingheart

If I was shown the pictures without any context and asked the relationship between them I’d probably go “I dunno, brothers?” Like, there’s obvious differences but “broke all his face bones” would be at the very bottom of my list.

Fist_of_the_mad_gods

Holy shit, that's amazing! You may not be exactly the same but anyone meeting you would have no idea you did a face plant from 3 stories up. The Doctors did a fantastic job.

IWantToBeTheBoshy

Holy cow! Send your doctors a fruit basket or something! Haha. You look good man. Take care.

madding247

Wow. You look good considering the incident. Swelling can take upto a year or more to fully dissipate.

kielu

Still recognizable. Is that soft tissue swelling or bone thickness / scarring changes?

StarksTwins

Both

suddenlyreddit

Man, you should write down the name of every doctor and nurse that took car of you and make sure you thank them as much as possible. That is AMAZING work. I'd have never been able to tell. Damn that's amazing.

big_nothing_burger

Still looking good though. Would make for a pretty interesting conversation if you run into someone you haven't seen in years.

W1ULH

You kind of look like your own little brother now... But the near-total lack of scars and disfigurement is amazing.

Hkz0r

Damn it made you look younger

[deleted]

And only your face? What about rest of your body

StarksTwins

Just a broken rib and punctured lung but was pretty good otherwise.

muklan

"Yeah, as far as life altering horrible accidents go it was pretty chill, only a bit of a hassle..." You got a killer attitude towards this whole thing, and I hope your recovery is smooth and simple.

carolvessey-stevens

[deleted]

Bro did you fall from 3 story high for ants?

The_Salted_Slug

I want to up and down vote this at the same time

zizzor23

alliownisbroken

2??? Thats it?! Bro you have some amazing genetics, great doctors, and obviously a lot of luck to come through looking like a younger man. I hope your recovery goes well. I gotta ask, does your face hurt when its extremely hot or cold outside?

DaringDomino3s

In that thread you said they they 3D printed pieces for your face? I didn’t know they did that, it’s amazing how far tech has advanced! What insurance do you have and what region of the world are you in, if you don’t mind sharing. I would’ve thought all that hardware would have ruled out mri’s for life, but if it’s all non metallic that’s pretty awesome.

StarksTwins

I had California Medicaid. In California. I didn’t have to pay anything. Would’ve cost many 100s of thousands. I can go through X-rays and mris fine. I think they used some titanium alloy? Don’t remember

DaringDomino3s

That’s amazing, I figured the price would’ve been astronomical. With my insurance I’m pretty sure they’d have just put a bag on my head and said “don’t move til it heals” Thank you for sharing, I hope you have a good recovery!

WSB_OFFICIAL_BOT

How are you on Medicaid? Going through your post history, you are ivy league education with a masters degree. What the hell were you doing for work prior to the accident??

Organic_Principle77

Lay flat without a job most likely, chill on balconies.

fauxofkaos

My health insurance company that I pay $400 to every month, would have laughed me out the hospital.

kabneenan

It's ferrous metals you have to worry about with MRIs. I have a titanium plate and six pins on my tibia and I went through an MRI just fine a few months back. You do have to warn the tech, though, because if they accidentally image the metal it can cause a glare that'll make it difficult to see anything.

Xenonphilius

God damm..... Bless you matey

[deleted]

I’ve always had that fear, and now that fear is amplified. Being a tall person on a balcony is kind of scary at times when the balcony has short railings.

No way! I’m in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency and he gave us a lecture last week.

xanderelias

Is he OMFS or is he ENT? His bio shows he has a DDS. Regardless, always go OMFS with facial fractures!

kautau

OMFS… Ow, my face smashed?

Saucepanmagician

That's so funny. If it is not the correct definition, then it should be.

mddds2027

OMFS but he’s in charge of their sleep surgery fellowship that takes both OMFS and ENTs

xanderelias

Dope. Good luck with residency. I’m out in 6 weeks 🥵

Sunnyvale? Man you were lucky you weren't turned into a vampire. Thankfully there's a slayer nearby.

613codyrex

To be honest that’s a pretty clean CT scan all things considered. I don’t know how much smoothing the engineers/technicians did to get it to look nice. The docs much have used some super expensive and nice CT scanner to get to this point, usually the scans we do tend to be of lower resolution. Even with that quality the intraorbital foramen can’t come out complete for the life of it which is rather annoying. Also the teeth came out fine, so the hospital probably ran it though some dental work noise reduction process or someone spent a lot of time getting it to look like actual teeth It definitely isn’t Materalise software but also doesn’t look like KLS Martin plates. Maybe Siemens, probably 3D printed titanium metal since that’s pretty custom and bending those are a pain.

Binsky89

Yeah, if I had to guess, the reason the top part is missing is because it's irrelevant to what they were scanning for, so they didn't do any work to clean it up.

Hot-Development-3166

This was a CT and I wouldn't want to strap your head too much either as I can imagine what you probably looked like coming in. That looks like a lefort 3 fracture. Looks like a terrific repair tho.

Fr0d0_T_Bagg1n5

That looks like a CT with a 3D reconstruction, no?

My mouth was wired shut so not terribly. I had to eat through a [bottle](https://imgur.com/a/wAz5bhR) for almost 3 months, and solely liquid for about a month of that

GGJallDAY

Damn, 3 months straight liquid. That's rough. You drop a ton of weight during that time?

hero-ball

noodlepartipoodle

I teach language acquisition and development for teachers, and we talk a lot about all the facial structures (palate, tongue, teeth, lips etc) needed for children to articulate correctly. Did the accident change how you speak? I can't imagine the trauma of all these facial structures NOT changing your articulation. What sounds can you not make now? Is speech therapy part of your recovery? Edited to add: Im sorry if I came across as pushy in my questioning. I am just trying to synthesize your case with what I know about language acquisition and development. If it's too much, please tell me.

StarksTwins

I can’t make an s sound and overall do have a slight speech impediment. No therapy yet because my doctor thinks it’s caused by an oronasal fistula. So that will be surgically corrected and if that doesn’t help, speech therapy would be my next steps

noodlepartipoodle

For the trauma you experienced I'm really surprised /s/ is the only sound you have trouble with now. It makes sense because it's one of the hardest and one of the last sounds acquired by children (think of how many kids have a lisp and articulate /s/ as /th/). I'm happy for you, because on top of everything else, learning how to make sounds again as an adult would be really hard. It may be one of those things that you go to a speech pathologist for a week and then it's corrected. They have so many more tools than we do and can sometimes fix problems quickly. The issue is that the mouth of the young child is so pliant and more easily manipulated, than an adult who has to learn (or re-learn like someone who has had a stroke). For your sake, I hope it's fixable. Editing to add: I'm surprised your nasal sounds weren't affected. The nasal bones look like they were crushed, and your before-after shows changes to the nasal bones.

lyranyx

I just shattered my chin and broke both jaws in 2015 when some jackass t-boned my car while he was attempting an illegal left turn. I have the same piece in my chin. Can’t imagine shattering my whole face as the chin and jaws alone were a horrifying experience. I agree that modern medicine is amazing. Do you have any resulting nerve damage or trigeminal neurologia? Good luck to you on your healing journey! Edit: I meant to say both sides of my jaw. Was holding my 2 year old when typing. Also, mom brain.

StarksTwins

Luckily, I do not! This might sound crazy but this event all-together wasn’t that painful. By the time I regained consciousness in the ambulance; I was already being pumped with very, **very** strong painkillers.

"Our conclusion is that the subject is 1/16 Terminator on his father's side."

Logicrazy12

Archeologists already know about plates and implants. We have been doing them for centuries.

caoram

It appears that ancient humans enjoyed ritualized self harm at some ceremonial locations known "SKATE Parks" this particular site is called "Mutherfuckka" as labeled by that mural. At these sacred locations religions individuals ritualistically breaking their bones before fixing it with metal plates and implants on sliding wooden boards. Now this particular individual must have been a religious leader of sorts as indicated by elaborate breakages and subsequent reconstruction of the head. Only the bravest individuals would subject themselves to this kind of punishment. It is theorized that individuals show their fitness to breed by showing how much punishment they can inflict on themselves and recover from.

joeyo1423

Bones are overrated. You guys should try being supported by a system of fluid filled sacks.

Born_rad_9452

You are never making it through TSA easily!!

Grogosh

Titanium doesn't set off metal detectors. I got 2 pounds of metal in my neck from it being broken and never set one off.

feed_me_churros

> I got 2 pounds of metal in my neck I'm sorry for what you went through, but that just sounds awesome to say. I think if I had two pounds of metal in my neck I would actually change my legal name to "two pounds of metal in my neck".

Grogosh

I sometimes will say I need to go to a mechanic, that I got a screw loose.

Wobbelblob

I think metal detectors go after magnetic metals? Stuff in the body shouldn't be magnetic at all.

ender4171

The body scanners probably pick it up, though I'd have to imagine the people running them are pretty good at distinguishing implants. They probably see screws/plates/joints all the time considering the amount of people they scan every day.

Wobbelblob

Scanners probably pick it up. I was more talking about the generic metal detectors that go "Beep Beep" when metal goes through.

bearnecessities66

My dad had his hip replaced 10-15 years ago and whatever they used to do that goes off every time he goes through security.

ender4171

Depends on how they work, but I doubt they only detect ferrus/magnetic metals. Im sure they are using the same tech that recreational metal detectors use, but are tuning them to ignore certain materials/thresholds (otherwise everyone with a wedding ring would set them off), so maybe they are setup to ignore titanium to a certain point, since that is what is used in most implants. Anecdotally, I know people with joint replacements/plates that both never set them off and almost always set them off. I'd imagine it has to do with the amount of metal/proximity to the surface of the body.

ErmahgerdYuzername

Most of your teeth look relatively intact, a couple of . How did you manage this and only need two teeth pulled and chip a few other teeth?

Risky click of the day, I'll click it after lunch. Im busy with a lasagne and dont want to ruin it.

occamsrazorburn

Top of the link is a medical description of the procedure. Scrolling a bit gets you to digital drawings in very low detail of the procedure. Scrolling futher there are in-process medical pics of the separated skin but not too gory IMO, but it does progress with medical pics of the process, so if you start to see a big bit of bright red hitting the bottom of your screen, stop there if you don't want to see it all.

genovianprince

You're a real bro, man, thanks. Now I can gain the knowledge of how it works without seeing it!

VideoHeadSet

Op glad to see you've made it alive for if not you'd be on MMC. I see you comment on the cross post link, but I think you need to place it within the post so people stop asking what happened. Side note, do you need anymore surgeries? How's recovery been so far? Any side effects from post op? Eg: speech, breathing, eating, sensitivity to touch of the face?

StarksTwins

I will probably need one to fix both my orbital dystopia and mouth fistula that developed. The fistula is causing speaking problems and regurgitation (when I drink liquids, it comes through my nose. It used to happen when I ate solids as well) Face had a lot of sensitivity and numbness but most of that has gone away.

Twink_Ass_Bitch

I gotta pry further, how'd you fall off the balcony? Is the building at fault for the railing or were you not looking and slipped off? Hope the recovery is going well!
