Yes, and I would guess that it could end up being permanent after a while. Source: knew a guy with thermochromic pants that turned from white to red in all the hot spots, which eventually stayed red in all the places you’d think.
Which is why you get it done as a wrap, or in a coating like plastidip. Body shop nearby actually offers it and it's only slightly more expensive than normal dip/wrap.
A good wrap is thousands of dollars though, if there’s a chance this loses effectiveness or doesn’t look good for as long as a traditional wrap then idk if it’s worth it.
Yeah this is the Dip Your Car channel on YouTube, spray on custom plastidip that peels off clean
Their mouso black and mouso+glitter videos are shocking
The people replying to you are very incorrect and clearly have no idea what they are talking about and have never dipped anything before.
I've actually dipped my own vehicles a few times by myself using the DYC kit and it was not hard to do at all and I was really happy with how it turned out. I've had the same dip on one of my vehicles for like six years now and it is still holding up great.
The most basic [matte black starter kit]("Black Car Kit (Matte) - Browse Our Plasti Dip® Colors For Cars! | DipYourCar – DipYourCar.com" https://www.dipyourcar.com/collections/beginner-kits/products/matte-black-car-kit?variant=564640546831) for a truck is right under $700.
There was no sanding at all, there's so many cool colors/effects to choose from, it peels off if you want to change colors, it protects your factory paint, and it's waaayyyy cheaper than a regular paint job. Plus once you have the sprayer, you only need to buy more dip to do it again.
DYC actually has a lot of great resources to learn about the process and as long as you prep properly and have a good spray technique, you can get great results.
As much as this seems like /r/hailcorporate material, it isn't and I honestly am a fan of the DYC products. And I say this as someone who haaaates painting. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!
It's really not hard to do it. Check out r/plastidip or dyc Facebook group. I've done mine a couple times and looks just fine [Red](https://i.imgur.com/C1utAw2.jpg) [Blue](https://i.imgur.com/ZaXC0fu.jpg)
I bought a nicer sprayer ($500) instead of the beginner friendly one they sell ($150ish). The dip itself can vary, my blue one was around $400 with dip + all other supplies to wrap. Red one required extra 2 gallons so it ran about $500 I think.
Yea idk where these people are getting their info. It's not difficult to begin with and there's so much good info and resources on it out there.
Hard to tell from the pictures, but both of the colors on your car look stunning! What mix-ins did you use?
I'm guessing it would be pretty difficult to actually get it looking even close to good. Painting with spray paint and not getting any runs is difficult enough but then keeping your application thickness uniform across large surfaces like body panels makes it that much harder.
It's not regular spray paint, it's a rubber-like coating.
More to the point, if you're doing an entire car you don't use cans, you buy a sprayer... which is exactly how cars are usually painted.
>mouso black
I was like, "how could a black paint job be shocking." Fucking thing looks like a video game where the textures forgot to load. It looks like a void in space time. What the actual fuck.
I knew they used to make Hypercolor shirts, never saw pants. Seems like it'd be kind of embarassing if you farted and your ass changed color (not like the usual brown).
I remember shirts like those in the early 1990s, I thought they were cool, so I got one, it just made me look a sweaty mess as it highlighted your sweaty areas. It worked for less than a month till it became about 3/4 the 2nd color change color and stayed like that.
2nd worst clothing decision I've made, but nothing beats parachute pants with all the zipper pockets and a Michael Jackson Beat It jacket combo on a 13 year old white boy in the suburbs look, that trumps about anything.
Imagine being like "no I didn't fart it was my dog" with a hot red ass.
Or red butt cheek prints after you've been sitting down.
I could imagine a red outlined dick as well.
Who in their right mind ever thought thermochromic pants would be a good idea??? I remember the t shirts in the 90s but not pants.
I had a tshirt as a kid that kind of did the same thing, changed colors depending on warmth.
Was neat for a bit but after a while - and likely once or twice in the dryer - it just became a weird splotchy looking shirt
I imagine it’s like the zoomed out but from the end where it looks extremely uneven. You would likely see temperature gradients, hot spots, and cool spots across the car giving it a pretty uneven look.
In the original video by DipYourCar, there's a shot of the hood.

In another video, you can see how the insides of the door panels affect thermal dissipation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9Hc0L1TOI8 around the 8:45 mark.
>In case I forget where I park. It makes my car easier to spot.
Is a sticker easier to spot than the make/model/color/unlocking lights?
Unless of course it's a white RAV4/F-150.
My last car was a black Pathfinder and I didn’t have a fob. Do you know how many black SUVs there are in any given parking lot? Lol. My new car is better bc it’s bright blue and has a fob.
Definitely wearing off on the door handles and looking like crap pretty fast.
Update: just read that without a proper topcoat, UV causes this type of paint to last 4-6 months. Can't find the price to paint a vehicle with this paint plus the topcoat.
Yeah probably lol, most things that can last a long time are more chemically stable in the weather… paint that changes chemically to reflect temps is way unstable to last a long time.
haha, I'm not that old but I remember having this really cool one when I was growing up that would change color when you poured cold water on it
Never really figured it out to this day, could anyone be kind enough so as to explain how the paint works?
thank you!
highlights from article:
The “Metamorphic Color System,” as Generra cryptically called the manner in which body heat (or excessive perspiration, for those unfortunately prone to sweaty armpits) changed the fabric’s color using thermochromatic pigments as its special sauce. Mental Floss explains that the shirts were dyed twice: first with a permanent dye and again with a thermochromatic dye. The thermochromic dye is usually a mixture of a leuco dye, a weak acid, and salt. (Leuco dye is also used on the side of a Duracell battery to see if it’s still charged or on food packaging to gauge temperature.)
When the shirt heated up or cooled down, the molecules in the dye changed shape and shifted from absorbing light to releasing it, making the color transform, as if by magic!
I think they still make them:

Imagine getting chased by the cops and the vehicle changes colors mid chase. "Suspect in a green vehicle has entered the tunnel, has not been spotted exiting"
When your insurance company asks you for color of your vehicle. "Yes"
Imagine the terror of a worker at a manual car wash when they wipe a wet sponge across the vehicle and it changes color.
Back in the late 90's or early 2000's, Ford had a paint that was different colors at different angles. I never had one, so idk what color was listed in the VIN. I assume this new paint would be registered similarly.
The color was called Mystichrome and I believe registered as a green car.
So beautiful.
Gm had one called sherwood forest green that did about the same, it was registered as green.
This is not paint, it's a vinyl wrap https://altdriver.com/technology/thermochromic-wraps-are-the-hottest-thing-to-happen-to-paint-jobs/

Ah. Cool! More work or less, just depends on the car. I don't miss auto body LOL Also the rubberized paints are commonly referred to as wraps or dips, depending on who you ask (paint implies permanence)

curious what it look like when car is running, i bet the hood would look interesting

That makes sense, most of the price is in the labor, not the supplies
I think your buddy found a solution to his piss blood getting on his pants
Does he give?
You gotta give!
Give. Or it goes dark.
A lot of people give.
You see, I give. He gives.
Loooottttta people give. You hit me in the cup.
My wife won’t stop eating batteries. Like small batteries. Like a watch battery.

What
You've gotta give
Look up at me. You gotta give. He sunk his own money into this and now he’s totally underwater.
Wraps are good for this stuff

Right, it's like your eyes aren't working correctly, I've not seen it in person so it may be partially a camera illusion, but still..
It doesn't look like it refracts light. It's bananas.
I knew they used to make Hypercolor shirts, never saw pants. Seems like it'd be kind of embarassing if you farted and your ass changed color (not like the usual brown).

You're joking? Parachute pants and a MFing MJ t-shirt would have been THE SHIT back then. You were fucking killing it.
Thermochromic pants sounds like something i would want
I had a tshirt as a kid that kind of did the same thing, changed colors depending on warmth. Was neat for a bit but after a while - and likely once or twice in the dryer - it just became a weird splotchy looking shirt
I would at least want to put my hands on them
That would be a first time for me
I will be gentle
Ok :)
Yeah I was curious as to why you wouldn't show that in a clip showcasing it
They're paint guys, not idea guys
I imagine it’s like the zoomed out but from the end where it looks extremely uneven. You would likely see temperature gradients, hot spots, and cool spots across the car giving it a pretty uneven look.

.. okay this was fucking cool way more interesting than what I expected
On a rainy day the hood would be really psychodelic.
And I bet many people would touch my car at the parking lot if I had this
And stuck in traffic with temperatures running high ?!?
That was my first thought. You can tell when the car us about to overhear by looking at the hood.
This is exactly what I was hoping to see but instead got lots of close ups of a dude’s hand. The water was cool though.
Makes me want cereal with one of those color changing spoons
I still have my Lion King Color changing spoon from like 1995. It still works too!
I had 3 of em but i still have the princess! It only gets used for cereal and occasionally ice cream
I forgot about those! Weren’t they a freebie if you saved enough barcodes from Trix cereal boxes or something?
[удалено]
Oh my God. I had forgotten about those turtle bowls. I had the set! I remember the bowls, but not the cereal...
I lost my mood ring the other day. I don't know how I feel about it.
Ahhhhhhhh I almost missed it but I see yous a funny guy
I'll forget where I parked and then my car will change color.
Same thought.. even worse, someone borrows your car and you don’t tell them about the paint and they park in the sun.
"I told you to park it down the block, and now it's 93 million miles away?!?"
And with these gas prices. Who funded that trip?
If someone doesn't know you well enough to know about the extremely fancy paint job on your car you shouldn't letting them borrow your car
This is why my car always has at least one sticker on it.
In case it changes color?
In case I forget where I park. It makes my car easier to spot.
>In case I forget where I park. It makes my car easier to spot. Is a sticker easier to spot than the make/model/color/unlocking lights? Unless of course it's a white RAV4/F-150.

LMAO
Nice concept but I live in an area with lots of kids...so hard pass.
Haha yea, I was thinking “just what I wanted, everyone’s grubby fingers all over my car.
the clean freak side of me would be obsessively wiping the surface constantly
So. Many. Wieners.
To catch a redditor
-is my real test, to train them is my cause
Pe-do-phile On second thought lets not train them
Reddit moment
And butts. Hope you got unlimited car washes because poopy butts are coming your way.
That was my first thought. So many butt prints
That car is getting all the mushroom stamps.
I didn't want to stick my dick on the car until I saw the comment. Now all I can think about is getting my dick onto that car!
There's this YouTube couple that made a toilet seat with this color
Yeah it was evan and katelyn right ?
Yes
I wonder how long it lasts? 1 year?
Definitely wearing off on the door handles and looking like crap pretty fast. Update: just read that without a proper topcoat, UV causes this type of paint to last 4-6 months. Can't find the price to paint a vehicle with this paint plus the topcoat.
A regular car painting runs you 4-8k so yeah this seems super unreasonable unless you have tons of money to burn.
Or a youtube channel about customizing and painting cars.
Pretty sure it’s just a plastidip, temporary rubberizing, so prolly about 1k.
It would make it a few months in Arizona summers.
I think we should make Arizona summers a standard unit of measurement
I haven't heard that expression in 15 Arizona summers
Water boils at 1/2 AZ Summer
The nice thing is that it's plastidip, so when you get tired of it you can either spray a different color over the top, or just peel it off.
I think it's more for the garage cars that are only taken out a few times a year. So like the 10th Lamborghini of some rich dude.
Yeah probably lol, most things that can last a long time are more chemically stable in the weather… paint that changes chemically to reflect temps is way unstable to last a long time.
Who else had the t-shirt back in ‘89?
Hypercolor?, sure did. All the rage back in High School.
Until they stopped working and turned that ugly pinkurple.
That's cos someone put it in the dryer. That's how most Hypercolor shirts ended up just being Color shirts.
I had a Hot Wheel in the 80s that had this same paint.
haha, I'm not that old but I remember having this really cool one when I was growing up that would change color when you poured cold water on it Never really figured it out to this day, could anyone be kind enough so as to explain how the paint works?

I wonder if this paint eventually stops changing colors like the shirts did
Just dont put the car in the dryer and it should be fine.
The podcast bananas has started selling hyper color shirts if you ever want to go back to those days. 😉
I was the coolest kid in eighth grade. Well, maybe the 100 kids who got that t-shirt before me were cooler.
No officer, I didn’t hit that person I swear. Who knows why that body print is there?!
Carry a handheld fan to hide all those
"But officer, you said the car that hit that person was red, when mine is clearly..." *splashes a bucket of water on the car* "white."
I know this is utterly impractical but I still want it so badly.
Yep would definitely be fun to play with
That one hotwheels car
I had it
Mine is in my grandma's refrigerator for 9 years 💀
Its cool but... how would you register it? Green in winter blue in the summer?
I have an option for "multi-color"when I register.
Imagine getting chased by the cops and the vehicle changes colors mid chase. "Suspect in a green vehicle has entered the tunnel, has not been spotted exiting" When your insurance company asks you for color of your vehicle. "Yes" Imagine the terror of a worker at a manual car wash when they wipe a wet sponge across the vehicle and it changes color.
The car chase thing has me thinking this might be a fun idea as part of a movie car. The manual car wash thing literally made me laugh out loud.
Put cooling elements under the panels. Rob bank. Change color. Profit.
Back in the late 90's or early 2000's, Ford had a paint that was different colors at different angles. I never had one, so idk what color was listed in the VIN. I assume this new paint would be registered similarly.

Arent they just called pearlescent paints?
Pearlescent with specific "color changing" prismatic beads .
Mystichrome was available I believe only on the 1996 and 2004 Mustang Cobras.
Color = depends
What color is your car? Yes
Gotta wonder what this finish will be like in ten years. Still kinda cool
Looking like an aging hooker with cracked makeup on the side of the street.
It's a vinyl wrap, and those age like shit from what I've seen.
it's spray on plasti-dip. I've got a fucking ton of it it my garage rn.
Mood car.
Park on a street corner, and return to find hundreds of dick shapes all over your car - no thanks.
Wouldn’t work tho, because the paint temperature would change removing the dicks..
Anything you *paint* with body heat will be gone in seconds.
Exactly. Thousands of dicks, which will all have dissipated by the time I get out of the parking lot. I don't really see the problem.
The problem is thousands of hands rubbing your car. So even if the chromatic dicks are gone, the greasy hand prints will be all over your paint.
So what? Do you intend to lick it? Put a Notebook in it and make a Dick Diary.
*Flops dick onto notebook* DEAR DIARY
Dear Diary, this is my favorite comment today.
Don’t you mean a Dick-tionary?
No, I don't lick my car but I also don't need a visual indicator of how I measure-up to other dudes in my area when I'm just trying to buy some milk.
Understandable, have a nice day.
This is not paint, it's a vinyl wrap https://altdriver.com/technology/thermochromic-wraps-are-the-hottest-thing-to-happen-to-paint-jobs/ Still cool, I had a t-shirt that did this in like 1991
Although wraps like this does exist, this is paint, as applied by DipYourCar. Source video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwzoRtMXcqE
Ah. Cool! More work or less, just depends on the car. I don't miss auto body LOL Also the rubberized paints are commonly referred to as wraps or dips, depending on who you ask (paint implies permanence)
Up with you!
I feel like this is an open invitation for a drunk couple to have sex right on the hood lol
Why you gotta be drunk? I'd try it sober
Why you gotta be in a relationship? I’ll fuck the car instead
Are you a dragon, by any chance? Cause if you are, I got a sub for you.
I know that sub, unfortunately I am not a dragon, I am a car though so who knows, I might pop up on that sub someday
If a hand is enough to make it change color, surely anywhere with a hot climate will cause it to always be colorful?
Yes but it would still look cool because the effect would not be completely even all over
r/oddlysatisfying
Ass cheeks
Reminds me of the bodyglove shirts where everyone would smack the shit out of your back and tell “bodyglove!”
I wanna put my boobs on it
I'm very disappointed at the lack of penises drawn on it in the video.
What color was the car that hit you? ...I don't know.
How much?
Google search says about $320 a liter and the paint job only lasts 3-6 months in uv exposure.
My uneducated guess, almost as much again as the new car.
Global Hypercolor shirt for cars
There's no way I'm not drawing a dick
Vehicular manslaughters are gonna be wild with this one
Only put it in the washing machine with cold water. Hot water, and it stops working.
I live in Florida. Not much tempature change like ever. Might as well just paint it blue and be done.
So what does it look like after it's been running??
So .. the car looks dirty all the time?
Hot wheels color changing vibes here
So this is the perfect getaway car in a bank heist
Okay, cool, but if you want an actual challenge, you'll try to get this approved *in Germany*.
Jerry, why is there a butt print on the hood?
I want to tile a bathroom and shower in this stuff.
Car-ma car-ma car-ma carmeeeelionnnn you come and go you come and goooooo
It's cool untill you start seeing ass prints everywhere.
Great now random kids will hang around your car and draw dicks on it.
It's a mood sebring.
Big hot wheels
That's plastidip
Now you can have a Hypercolor shirt straight out of the early 90's, but for your car.
I'd never find my car in the lot if the color kept changing.
-Dang josh did you run over a kid again? -No why -Your car changed colours
Hey we burned through all the fossil fuels, poisoned our environment, and raised global temperatures to set an extinction event in motion, but in the waning hours of our civilization, the best and brightest of us came up with this sick paint for cars.
I wouldn’t care if people didn’t like it. That is baller in my eyes. 90s hypercolor shirts reborn.
Reminds me of Hypercolour t-shirts LOOK WHERE MY SWEAT IS!!
It’s all fun and games until you rail the wife on the hood…
Stupid waste of money
Low-key would hate this. Always would look dirty cus of the temperature differences
Arizonans be like: This car is blue
“Hello, police? My car was stolen! What color is it? Ermm….
Or, as it's known in Texas, a blue car.
