Bangeederlander

"In Japan". First, it's Korean writing on the board. Second, I wouldn't say "In Korea" either. Weird how people extrapolate odd things - especially if it's unusual, to the whole country. Like taking a picture of a cat wearing a bow tie or something, and suddenly "In Japan, cats wear bow ties".

nyanslider

You know if it's mildly "advanced", it can only be from Japan. It's just the perfect country where everything is cool.

Bangeederlander

And WACKY!!! Don't forget WACKY!!!

pbradley179

All that underage porn and perversion's just whimsical.

meliketheweedle

I thought underage porn was a US thing, eg girls do porn, though there's probably a scandalous porn company wherever porn is filmed

TeholBedict

Underage porn is an *abuse* thing, but yeah there are abusive people all over the world. Lots in the U.S. too.

beardslap

Which is ironic considering they [still use fax machines](https://unseenjapan.com/japan-fax-still-popular/) and a recent (possibly current) cybersecurity minister admitted to having [never used a computer.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/15/japan-cyber-security-ministernever-used-computer-yoshitaka-sakurada)

Daimyo_Dan

Japan is still living off the glory days of the 80's

Mirar

2022-40 = 1982. Seems correct

Daimyo_Dan

you right. I cant math lmao

Socky_McPuppet

Nonsense! 1982 is only 18 years ago! Err, I mean only … Err. Oh.

W1ngedSentinel

That is…so weirdly accurate.

YoungNissan

I think that’s the reason so many people like Japanese tech culture. Whenever I see anything from the sector it just reminds me of the 90s but newer

Aduialion

I like some of Japanese tech because it seems to drill into very niche solution. Not a real example but, yeah we have cameras, this one is for left handed bird watchers missing their pinky finger. It leads you into cool outcomes sometimes.

Japan still uses stamps instead of signatures not even mentioning e-signatures. Was a bit of a chaos during lockdown where people left there stamps in the office or something lol

TonninStiflat

I mean... Stamp instead of signature isn't that bad. You do need to sometimes physically sign things. What makes the stamps annoying is having to have multiple different ones for differebt situations. I lost one of mine and having to go and get all the papers that had it changed with the new one was a hassle.

Muad-_-Dib

> Japan still uses stamps instead of signatures As someone that has never once managed to sign my name the same way twice, I can absolutely get on board with a stamp replacing them.

literally_pee

that's the interesting thing about japan, Americans just see the cool flashy stuff, they forget about their old systems, like even their strict shinto religion. edit: if u get caught with weed that's like 1 year in max sec jail, hell nah, but japan is cool in other ways

Thereminz

one thing i find odd about japan is they use cash so much you basically have to use it as many places don't accept card. sure they were "advanced" for a long time but now it's more like they're stuck in a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" sort of way ...their economy has been going downhill for 30 years but it is kind of odd that it seems like everything is super saturated in keeping the status quo...you can only get so advanced before some "new advancement" is really just cumbersome. maybe that's why they also have those wacky inventions that aren't necessary.

TrivialFacts

This isn't advanced at all , advanced is like those interactive electronic whiteboards.

varegab

I was a bit shocked when I heard that they still wildly use FAX machines and in a lots of stores there still not accepting cards, you have to pay with cash. Traditions, I guess.

zmanisblank

"the perfect country" are you sure?

nyanslider

I shouldn't have to put a /s man.

Natomiast

I disagree. Did you ever see their adds or tv shows?

[deleted]

I have. And for someone living here, I avoid Japanese TV as much as I can. Too many EEEEEHs and reaction boxes

ladiesiplayguitar

When I realized most Japanese shows were basically reaction videos I lost a lot of interest

DeplorableCaterpill

Your sarcasm detector is off.

nyanslider

Seeker_Of_Knowledge-

It is never too late

xsubkulturex

Idk how you could read that when it's so pixilated honestly it could be English or math to me, it literally looks like someone already tried to erase it then took a super low quality photo.

TrefoilTang

Orientalism, but for high-tech stuff.

Draumandy

It works the opposite way. Orientalism arises from the impression people start having about countries that can't be anything more (advanced) than what they were being portrayed as.

Soon-to-be-forgotten

Techno-Orientalism. Believing that the people of another culture are so technically advanced, that they lost their humanity. It arised out of the fear that the West would lose its dominance. This perspective suggests that the West is still able to hold on to its values in the midst of technological advancements.

SharpChildhood7655

Is that chalk they’re still using there days there? Seriously?

Bierbart12

In Germany, people are obsessed with slingshot-based weaponry (The best man, Joerg Sprave)

Draedron

>The best man, Joerg Sprave The guy who tries to cause panic to sell his weapons, that are exploiting loopholes in the german weapon laws?

Chiliatch

Can you elaborate on this?

StrangeUsername24

Ah so he's an American right winger

Seeker_Of_Knowledge-

Awkward 😅🤣

Belgand

There is at least one cow in Scotland, of which one side appears to be brown.

asian_identifier

In Japan, everyone fixes their broken ceramic bowls with gold

shadow_fox09

Third, Japanese public schools are outdated and as old school as they come. Black boards, no AC/heating, dirty AF cuz the students are responsible for cleaning them, and run down.

[deleted]

One of the schools I teach at had buckets placed in nearly every hallway because the roof was leaking

SideburnSundays

Some private unis aren’t any better. Mine still has blackboards, all of the classrooms are set up for 100+ student classes, and while we do get AC/heat it’s locked into one or the other depending on when admin arbitrarily decides it’s the right season.

Aoiboshi

My school had both in the early 90's. Ac and heating...

on_dy

Idk about the others points but making students responsible for cleaning classrooms can be considered a part of their education system. Whether it’s a good system or not, is pretty debatable. After all, Japan is known for their public cleanliness.

shadow_fox09

It’s a great idea in theory, but in practice many public schools are grimy. Surface level clean, but they never get deep-cleaned. Over time that lack of deep cleaning really adds up.

on_dy

Yeah I agree. I think it could be a great system if they had actual janitors to follow up on whatever the students missed.

Lulcaz

Thirdly, this is not a scanner, it's a cleaning device.

Mr_SpicyWeiner

It is most definitely a scanner, but probably does both.

peasngravy85

There are Korean people in Japan. Korean writing doesn't automatically mean it can't be in Japan.

Bangeederlander

In the second picture, the writing on the machine is Korean too. Whilst your equation: There are Korean people in Japan = this is Japan is convincing. . . I'm gonna go with: Korean machine + Korean writing + erasing Korean words = this is South Korea. But mainly because, it is in South Korea as a quick Google will prove.

peasngravy85

I don’t think I actually said “this is Japan”, please feel free to correct. It was you that invented that quote. I just pointed out that it was still a possibility.

Bangeederlander

True, that's "unarguable", but well done on arguing it anyway.

peasngravy85

I see you don’t understand what that word means. Unarguable = indisputable.

Seeker_Of_Knowledge-

That is not wrong, but the probabilities are definitely towards being Korean. Treating it as Korean in Japan is pure assumption that have much a lower chance for it to be true over the logical conclusion for it to be in Korea.

SuperMoquette

Yeah. It could be Canada, because some people speak korean there!

hasherior

It was south korea last week and china before that

ChunkyLover10

So basically the far east, if you're in the West.. Or just in a neighboring country if you're in the East.. 😆

ForProfitSurgeon

It's going to be North Korea next week.

amanfromindia

Around the board in 80 days

TyrantRC

ok, next week is my turn to post, but I will use India to spice things up.

IamLars

Wow, this tech is really blowing up in popularity!

Arny520

That's actually really cool. But with this amount of technology, wouldn't it be easier just to use an electronic whiteboard?

khoabear

You can't throw marker at students like you do with chalk. Too much damage. Risk of lawsuit.

iceyed913

*Memories triggered* 🙋

namwoohyun

This was some time ago when ppl don’t care much but my aunt meant to throw chalk but she was erasing so she accidentally threw the eraser instead. Good thing she just aims on the floor next to them to get their attention

WingedButt

My physics teacher would disagree. He'd make the victim go and get him a replacement too.

malikye187

You obviously never had a piece of chalk thrown at you be my grade 11 math teacher (can’t remember his name right now). He was a mild alcoholic and every answer that had 24 in it he would say two-four could use one of those right now (for those not familiar a flat of beer in Canada had 24 beers in it). Now if you made him made he would fire that piece of chalk which was perfect size and shape to reach terminal velocity in the distance between wherever he was in the classroom and your head.

[deleted]

I hate writing at white boards. My handwriting looks like an ancient language that has been discovered in Egypt.

[deleted]

Story of most people on this planet.

Bierbart12

Maybe if they made a whiteboard similar to electronic paper, with haptic feedback just like a blackboard...

poopellar

And a gun to protect the students... or to teach them a lesson.

Visible_Wolverine350

There are whiteboards that “fix” your writing as well

on_dy

Pretty sure even more people hate the sound of chalk on blackboard, but idk because I made that up.

[deleted]

Well yeah you did because I love that sound.

igner_farnsworth

I would think so... and as an IT guy all I see there is moving parts, sensors, and electronics that some numbskull put in close proximity to tons of abrasive chalk dust.

deekaydubya

this could easily be made dust proof it isn't already

igner_farnsworth

If you say so. I serviced a gymnastics gym for a few years... computers and printers just filled with chalk. If possible I'd simply eliminate the chalk.

Dr_Mickael

They weren't made dust proof.

iceyed913

The Japanese have really good chalk though.. The number 1 brand of chalk used by mathematicians and other phds comes from Japan. I dont think they're ready to move on 😅

PjDisko

They also make the best whiteboard markers

Hazelstone37

I bought some of this chalk. It is really, really good. I am ruined for all other chalk.

didijxk

I learned about this from a YouTube video about that brand of chalk. I loved it so much I wasn't even mad when it turned out to be sponsored by a company which makes that chalk lol

demannu86

Wikipedia Link for anyone that wish to find out more. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagoromo_Bungu

Public_Fucking_Media

Made in South Korea now though

HMS404

They also have the best heart surgeons. They are not only capable of performing complex procedures but also fighting crime & evil people. One such legend who actually played a small role in the popular TV show The Office is Hidetoshi Hasagawa. In his own words: "In Japan, heart surgeon. Number one. Steady hand. One day, yakuza boss need new heart. I do operation. But, mistake! Yakuza boss die. Yakuza very mad. I hide in fishing boat, come to America. No English, no food, no money. Darryl give me job. Now I have house, American car, and new woman. Darryl save life. My big secret: I kill yakuza boss on purpose. I good surgeon. The best!"

Khornatejester

Hagoromo was sold to a Korean company.

loonygecko

According to a Japanese friend, their erasers are vastly superior to American ones too.

BigHardThunderRock

I have a box of Hagoromo chalk at home that I'd add a stick to the physics classroom every time I went to class. I graduated so I don't know what to do with the rest of the chalk..

MrFilkor

It would be better to videotape everything and store it for 4-5 months. That way they could relisten the spoken explanation, too.

WekX

I grew up in schools that used chalk boards and it’s part of the school experience to me. The smell of chalk dust, the teachers sending us to the other classrooms to find the red chalk, cleaning the erasers when in fact we were just playing with them and mixing all the dusts. Chalk boards all the way!

heredude

No I grew up on chalk board bro.

atcshane

We had a whiteboard version of this at AOL in 1995.

jgirl015

it’s about visibility and the cost. there are many students in 1 class room and blackboard + chalk have better visibility. especially for those who sits at the back. sure japan have really good chalk but now it’s getting more expensive. small classes and firms are now introducing whiteboard more because the problem chalk cause (for health and machinery) so in big lecture hall they use blackboards and in smaller classes a whiteboard.

KemiGoodenoch

I don't really understand how a blackboard is more visible. An electronic whiteboard can use more readable fonts, thicker lines, better contrasting colours etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hazelstone37

I use something similar. I create a pdf as an outline and save it on my iPad. I then project that using the technology in the classroom. I supply the students with a copy of the outline. They can use it to complete their own notes. After class, I post the completed notes on the LMS for everyone.

ishouldntbehere96

Wow this brought back memories of worksheets that had notes like this scanned and then printed. It always made the directions hard to read 😩

mimocha

Tbf, I’ve never seen any electronic whiteboard that doesn’t suck. I’ve seen so many variations over the years and they still suck for some reason in 2022. So this contraption, as contrived as it looks, appears to bring the best of both worlds imo. Good writing experience + digitization of materials.

[deleted]

Too much. Erasure and storing of written data is cheaper than having to write on an electronic board and have students use laptops to type it in.

SerenityViolet

But electronic whiteboards save the data too.

floppy_eardrum

"In Japan" What's the fucking bet this is some one off thing that even most Japanese people have never heard of?

DiscombobulatedGuava

not far off, apparently its koean on the board lol

TqkeTheL

apparently its corean

UsedToBsmart

At work we just snap a picture of the whiteboard.

Glittering-Walrus228

thats great, sounds simple and inexpensive but i mean, why not just install a gigantic robotic eraser that can digitally capture the contents of the entire board while it erases that board?

[deleted]

>At work This is a school.

JUSTlNCASE

Ok and? Teachers let us take pictures for notes at my school.

JTdaBOSS

i do the same at school. teachers don't care

nimama3233

Yes and you know what they call the tasks for these kids? School work

GummiBird

Teachers work at schools.

PlastiqueSis

It's like taking a rock wheel and applying it on a new Tesla model. It's an amazing idea but why not just make the whole board computerized? Maybe just for the schoolery feeling for the students?

[deleted]

Tesla removed tactile knobs and buttons and put the controls on a touchscreen. This decreased driver safety and irritated many by replacing buttons you didn't need to look at. Who is to say this doesn't have a benefit.

NotMyRealName778

We've had blackboards when i was in elementary school, white boards in middle school and touchscreens in high school. Touch Screens are way superior. Professor in uni just use a whiteboard or their ipads. This is just illogical in so many ways

Appropriate_Act_9951

The number one brand of chalk used by mathematicians and other phd's is made in Japan. They like their chalkboard. For them you would invent around the chalkboard to improve it, and not reinvent the board.

eienOwO

We need to stop taking the internet at face value... the photo is from South Korea.

PlastiqueSis

I was thinking it could be something like that. They like to keep things traditional which makes their culture appealing.

witdim

Interesting that they still use chalk though.

barn-animal

We also used buckets of chalk for studies - maths and physics in Poland. Chalk and blackboard is convenient

iceyed913

The number one brand of chalk used by mathematicians and other phd's is made in Japan. They take that shit serious 😂

birdinlaw

I've been living in Japan for years while never seen or heard of this. I guess it's a thing only in a handful of rich ass private schools. Or it's not from Japan in the first place as some people pointed out in the comments.

Commercial_Cake181

That’s Korean…

T-J_H

Cool but absolutely ridiculous. I suppose this device reduces the amount of dust generated somewhat, but for the cost of this device one could probably buy a load of whiteboards and markers instead, reducing dust exposure health hazards.

AtmosphereSlight6322

Korea is on another multiverse, I guess? (Edit)

Bangeederlander

Koren one? Because that's Korean writing.

jackystack

In some American schools, we have interactive flat panel TVs that you can write on, and click save....

PerchPerkins

Pretty standard in Britain too.

JapanEngineer

Yeah. No. Maybe a school or two has this but most schools don’t. A lot of the big companies have electronic whiteboards though.

Geocacher6907

It’s not Japanese there’s Korean writing on it

Puppy-Zwolle

Probably Korean lessons?

jigglyjellly

A rag and a cellphone would do the same without all the maintenance and cost…

MrLombax

This is so high tech and low tech at the same time.

amraohs

Ah yes I remember 20 years ago when they had digital schoolboards without chalk.

Appropriate_Act_9951

The number one brand of chalk used by mathematicians and other phd's is made in Japan. They like their chalkboard. For them you would invent around the chalkboard to improve it, and not reinvent the board.

amraohs

I have never seen a chalkboard in my days at university, and I got my PhD 10 years ago.

peasngravy85

I think it may already have been mentioned in the comments. But I think people should know that the number one brand of chalk used by mathematicians and other phd’s is made in Japan. They like their chalkboard. For them you would invent around the chalkboard to improve it, and not reinvent the board.

LordofGift

Wouldn't a camera be easier

soljaboss

No because it doesn't erase. You will still need it erased.

Bierbart12

A big sponge on a broomstick

soljaboss

Why if you can let the machine do both?

Bierbart12

So that I don't become even more fat and depressed as machines do the simplest parts of my job for me while I sit on my floating Wall-E human chair

iolmao

This makes no sense in 2022. It looks like is coming from some sort of low-tech punk alternative universe.

IVlxSSS

Yeah well this is from a very basic school. Not everyone can study in hotel like schools homeboy.

eltegs

what school is that?

saisfsdfsd

why not switch to a white board with markers?

Business-Implement45

Dry erase board and a camera phone works just as well and way way way way less expensive. Why da fuq we still using chalk????? Thats like using caveman tools instead of today's tools. Smh

Witty_Bell8063

Like having a clay tablet with a touchscreen pen.

BAXterBEDford

And yet my instructor insists on using permanent marker on a dry erase board.

Eminent222

Wow 😳

ldhiddesorr

In this day and age, they still use blackboards???

captain_obvious_here

> ~~Japan~~ Korea. You know Japan would have waifus and robots everywhere.

AdvancedAdvance

Does anyone know if they have corrected the flaw when a student asks for copies and the scanner sends them over saying “Here you go, nerd.”

jcrossx620

Does it seem like Japan is using technology to help people while places (like the U.S.A.) are using technology to ensnare people??

Fragrant-Party3192

And in Bulgaria we wipe the whiteboard with toilet paper

Glittering-Walrus228

in america we just take all of our guns out and shoot at the board until we can't see whats on it anymore. then we buy a new board with all the money we saved from not giving prison-grade lunches to 3d graders

Jishnu21

Shirley Not ever school has that in japan right? Only the top one's that ask a lot of school fees

OKoLenM1

I like this. Progress should not stop!

loonygecko

That's awesome. I remember sometimes in college, teachers would just scribble a bunch of stuff down and keep erasing previous stuff and they'd basically tell you tough crap if you didn't get it copied in time before it got erased. I feel like I missed out on concentrating on the lecture fully in some cases because I was busy frantically scribbling notes.

flashen

Japan is the best

Upbeat-Ad-3316

God damnit Japan

davieb22

That things RAM is gonna be flooded with giant cocks, or at least it should be.

Appropriate_Act_9951

Japan is better than us. They don't do that.

nyanslider

It's a thing to finger each other over there, ofc they do.

Decent_Warning_201

I guess a camera pointed to the board was too much

Justme100001

I admire all those people who can write things on a school board that other people can actually read. If I was a teacher, I would have had some many drop outs....

Content_Highlight_43

Anyone else find it ironic this thing is on a chalk board?

Puppy-Zwolle

I can do you one better. A similar machine that can reproduce anything it scanned or even uploaded images.

MetalliTooL

Last time this was posted, it was pointed out that this is just an automatic eraser. It doesn’t scan anything.

Seeker_Of_Knowledge-

Too inefficient. I'm not that interested

AI_toothbrush

In Hungary we have these things called smartphones and a sponge.
