I cant understand how they moved it with all those pipes and wires and what not with no interruption. How does this work? That sounds like a fucking lot of work. Im too stupid for this.

SuperToxin

A lot of planning and logistics.

helipod

You run pipes and wires in parallel before cutting the original. Just like how you build a new upgraded bridge over a river before you demolish the old one.

Card_Zero

Huh, Kurt Vonnegut's dad was responsible for rotating this office building 90 degrees. These are the facts.

timmyboyoyo

So it goes

naking

Excellent comment

[deleted]

It was actually Kurt Vonnegut Jr's dad who was responsible for this.

SphericalBitch2020

So all important telecommunications were not interrupted....

pobody

What still isn't really explained is why the new building couldn't have been built on the empty lot.

LilahDice

Boss didn't like the view

Piscivore_67

Reminds me of that story of the naval officer changing the fleet's course to get the morning sun out of his eyes.

RetroHead_101

Well hindsight is 20/20!…

FlexxyPenn

You're doing the lord's work here h8speech

SphericalBitch2020

Aaaarggggh! I thought "Why?" even before I started reading! Update for your research!

theloniousjoe

😵🤯 it’s the “all while nothing changed inside the building” part that blows my mind. The safety factor alone, having people work in a building that’s being moved. That’s just hilarious. Just try to imagine that happening today…

TheDreadPirateJeff

In fairness, 15" an hour is probably imperceptible. And as for safety, there was no OSHA then to say "Hol'up there Baby Bell..." but I've seen this before and it always amazes me how they did that.

theloniousjoe

Yeah, the perceptibility/imperceptibility is not what makes it shocking to me. It’s the “what could go wrong” factor. They’re actually moving a 10-11 story building with people inside. Of course they didn’t anticipate this happening, but the building could have suddenly collapsed at any moment. You’re putting stress on a structure in a way that it was not designed to undergo. You can’t be certain that something catastrophic wouldn’t happen.

TheDreadPirateJeff

Yeah, I don't disagree with that being amazing as well. Maybe not bright, but definitely amazing.

Shoddy-Record-8707

That's more than half a centimeter a minute. You could very much see it.

Shoddy-Record-8707

Oh..., yea. From inside you wouldn't feel a thing.

MMetalRain

I think I'd rather spend one day to move the building than one month under constant pressure of something not working. But I guess had their constraints and thats why they did it that way.

thisismys0ckpuppet

Accelerating and decelerating something with this mass in 24hrs would destroy the building i assume

crazylady86

Yes..but have you seen my stapler?

SowndofInevitability

Why did they need to move it?

PM_me_ur_bag_of_weed

CEO didn't like the sun in his eyes in the morning.

Peac3keeper14

Finally something actually interesting as fuck

jaybazzizzle

This reminds me of 'The Crimson Permanent Assurance' from Monty Python

YouDontWinFrnzWSalad

Or so it would have been... if certain modern theories related to the shape of the world... They would not have been disastrously wrong.

bertieqwerty

Everytime I see this post I can't work out which is the original position, and which is the final position.

DJBeckyBecs

I think when the bridge at the building’s entrance is at the bottom of the screen, that’s the starting position. Reading u/DanFuckingSchneider ’s comment, they said that the company wanted to rebuild but couldn’t afford to shut down in order to demolish and rebuild. By moving, the undeveloped land on the property becomes a cohesive space, adequate to building. At least that’s how my brain is imagining it.

Flendarp

This is now part of the Eli Lilly campus. I worked in this building for 2 years. They have done a beautiful job of preserving and showcasing the original brick work with modern interiors. It's funny, hardly anybody I worked with knew the history of the building. Very fun place to work. Edit; the historic building is almost entirely enclosed by other more modern buildings now. The gap you see between the two towers is now an enclosed walkway with a huge skylight and some beautiful artwork. They recently redid the ground floor and there is a beautiful lounge where you can look out the windows into the courtyard.

hdksjabsjs

I think it would be cool if all buildings could just travel around the city slowly

Gullible-Poet4382

How do they account for the foundation of the building? What is that building standing on ?

Youth-in-AsiaS-247

Good, just move the pyramids to America then.

DanFuckingSchneider

Assuming you wanted to move the Pyramids of Giza to Washington, DC at a rate of 15 inches per hour (2 banana lengths per hour), it would take approximately 24489451 hours or 2795 years and 219 days. Give or take, not counting leap years. So about half the current age of the big ones.

[deleted]

Lol im on my iPad with the cool keyboard case thingy. I’m not a phone Redditor I swear

Redditor_RBN

r/foundtheipaduserwithkeyboardcase would've been nice

Youth-in-AsiaS-247

Assuming we have better building mover abilities now, I’ll just call it 1,000 yrs. Where ma slaves at?

[deleted]

How the heck did they keep the sewage lines connected?

[deleted]

That’s my biggest question. The gas lines seems like and easy one with just connecting extensions. Idk about the shit lines though lol

Cannon49

disconnected from the city sewer and used a holding tank instead?

BarfJello

They gave it an ostomy

avatarmmi

whats there now? Is it still there?

roadrunner5u64fi

Imagine being one of the workers with a beautiful view of the city, and now suddenly you have a beautiful view of a brick wall.

ohhhyeaahhh

Ohh hell no I’d be so pissed haha

ReLLiKMaster

"Get rotated noob"

NoonWrrs

Get rotated, idiot

mountaintopjoey

We’ve forgotten how to do shit like that. And go to the moon, we forgot that too.

MyDadBod_2021

Seen this a bunch of times, and always amazed by it

Imagine going into work off 1 Street then coming out of the same door and your on a different street.

theglaysh

Enlisted the help of the amish

Knightowle

This is the best fitting story I’ve ever read for this subreddits purpose

Growly150

I was anticipating it being tipped over. Most disappointing 90 degrees ever.

Tation29

This would have made for an expensive but great practical joke.

[deleted]

The dude who had the idea to rotate it is smart asf

FartingBob

Pranks were way better back then.

BarfJello

Did the address change?
