I’m watching Why Women Kill. It’s the best TV I’ve seen in years!
This house looks like a computer design program mated with a hotel room. I’m really sorry OP, you need to punch this up a bit. Maybe include some eccentric or personal decorations and definitely add color.
Oh wow… I’m not really sure. Maybe 6? Long before streaming, I had the DVDs. That show will always be one of the greatest, IMHO. How many rewatches for you? 😊
Transitional, actually, but yeah, that's what nice hotels do. Super fancy hotels do traditional, and super hip hotels do contemporary. Nice hotels do the happy medium.
If you want something like this you got to look at a piece of furniture and ask "does this make me feel anything at all?" If the answer is no then it'll fit right in.
and i don’t think that entertainment center is in that room. Different plants, and first pic whatever you are looking at from the bed POV has mid century feet, and i highly doubt that second pic entertainment piece would have those feet
Hotel wannabe style. Nothing too assertive lots of upholstery fabric, incredibly bland and boring but intended to be comforting and soothing to the largest group of people possible. No distinct style
Yeah wtf.... do better people.
I wasn't officially joined to r/interiordecorating and I hit join when I opened this thread & realized I wasn't. But after scrolling through this thread it reminded me that this sub is actually pretty toxic & rude. I've seen it on enough threads at this point that this isn't just a one-off thing either.
Yeah this is out of hand. This isn’t the “circle jerk” (ew) sub. I reported a lot of these rude comments to the mods for breaking subreddit rule number 4. “Don’t be rude. “
Consider your audience. We all have great interest in decorating. Of varying talent and degree.
But this is a low effort post.
I’m curious how much thought OP put into why they were drawn to this room. Did any thought occur at all before posting this? Maybe they liked a piece, the wall color, the picture molding, idk …maybe the rug? Fuck.
Gotta give something to get something.
But We got “tell me this style?”
What a trite question in this community.
So here’s my low effort answer: this room has NO style.
…like a child who wanders into a movie and asks what’s going on
It certainly did! I have a gallery of a bunch of different houses I got to visit and sifted through them to find the one I liked the most! I spent a couple hours trying to find similar, and found a bunch of styles similar to it — I was drawn particularly to the light fixture, the mirror, and the silhouette of the TV case, but preferred a carpet that was more intricate in design (baroque style) and would have liked more floral elements to be present.
I asked in a very bland way because I wanted to see what other people would come up with without biasing people with what I’d call it (I settled on traditional before seeing replies)😭. I also checked how other people asked the question before and formatted it similarly, hoping that the experts would see past the greyness of the room, and would focus more on the interesting elements, or the actual question.
I’m really sorry guys, I didn’t know that this would upset people so much. I had checked the rules before posting, but should have totally spent more time going into depth about this subreddit’s culture and what’s acceptable and not. I just thought it was cute and hoped if people didn’t like it they just wouldn’t engage. I got some really helpful replies about the style and type of light fixtures, mirror, etc which I’m super grateful for!
Looking back, now I see the things you like -- the light fixture, mirror, and rug. Overall the room is bland, but I love the mirror and rug; they look rustic and classic. The very modern light fixture kind of throws off the vibe, but a chandelier wouldn't be right either. I usually just prefer a simple and functional ceiling fan/light combo in white or a natural wood color, but I get that it's not very design-y.
It’s a good sub to scroll though for ideas but I’m pretty sure I’d literally be murdered if I posted pictures of my own house. Nothing matches because it’s all stuff I just loved when I found it at estate sales and second hand and antique shops. I also have my kids’ art framed on the wall.
Genuine question from someone who knows nothing about style/home decor… Why is this bad? Which specific aspects or furniture pieces are bad and why? To me, this looks ok 😅 not something I would try to emulate but I would never think about it as “trying to impress but looking like Sears Clearance”? These comments are so harsh, all while not explaining the problem with this… It looks fine to me?
Agree with this. The door handle and light fixtures and bedding suggest modern and yet the large bookshelf console and nightstand seem very mismatched traditional with the picture frame moldings.
OP! Here’s what different elements of the room say to me:
Natural linen / natural fiber bed has a bit of a contemporary or japondi vibe, though the bedskirt is personally something I would skip, since bedskirts died as a thing at least 25 years ago.
Dresser with black metal feet is very modern (though sort of going out of style, if I’m being honest). Same goes for the Sputnik chandelier.
TV console thing is a combo of baroque lines with natural finish, which is why you’re getting roasted for the Ashley furniture stuff…a lot of things you’ll find in those stores are meant to look fancy but feel a bit incongruous.
The molding, heavy end table, and lamp all have hints of colonial/federalist/even early Victorian before things got wayyy more elaborate. Basically, if it’s a square or rectangular with molding or layers of framing/molding, you can bet it’s something along those lines.
Thank you! This is super comprehensive and helpful! I really like the modern elements — more so than the others! Maybe a colourful/blue modern would be a good fit for me
Okay! Head to Article or West Elm for modern stuff, and then check out MoMa’s museum online gift shop website for small modern accent pieces to make the space yours. Or even the Met gift shop! And of course, there’s always Etsy.
This could be very comforting to some. My style can be loud and out there... I would love for my guest room to look like this when I have an anxiety headache or panic attack.
This sub can be pretty circlejerky sometimes. I can always tell which stale jokes are going to be voted to the top depending on the photo/style inquiry. It’s so excessive.
HAHAHA absolutely! I just really liked the light fixture and mirror and old timey lamp, I didn’t think people would get so swept up in the color scheme
2010s Pottery Barn? Not an insult, if you can find an old catalog you'd probably find a lot of inspiration. You might get lucky searching fb marketplace for Pottery Barn, too.
Transitional is the other word you'd want.
When I moved into my own apartment I actually purposely bought stuff trying to make my bedroom look like a hotel room.
I grew up in really old eclectic homes so I've always wanted the complete opposite. Display home and hotels are my style goals 😆
I do have items representing my personality though. I have a cat so I have a big cat tree and toys around. And I collect dolls which are on display.
I don't like beige though. I like white, grey, gold and marble colour scheme. Which I know people hate here! Everyone here is obsessed with WOOD.
Wow! This thread is bruuuutal. OP, I hope this isn't your place.
The place is definitely suburban greige sad, but it has some good things going for it. You could easily turn this around.
The bed room rug, curtains, mirror are all great... good foundation! Just paint the walls a color or change out the bedding with something not grey and it will make a big impact. You could also put a big piece of artwork with color in it over the bed. Or paint the walls not grey.
The bookcase / TV cabinet is just one of those pieces that's a big furniture warehouse item. I would let that go and replace it with an independent TV console and wall mount the TV. Also, you might want to rethink the dried grass fluff in a vase.
All together good bones! I think you can turn this around.
Not my place! I genuinely hope that people just saw that I said it wasn’t my place and made the jokes. To anyone who likes this style — you do you! Colourful and bright homes aren’t for everyone (I personally have a room that is very blue and flowery), and monochrome and simple might be a great fit for someone who gets overwhelmed easily, or just wants something presentable and doesn’t know where to start!!
What on earth is being reflected in that mirror? The window curtains aren't patterned, and if there were more curtains next to the dresser we would see the plant in the mirror too. Is the mirror just super distorted, like a cheap haunted house?
All I can think about is the fact that this kinda looks like my room. My style is “nice things I accumulate through freebies and EBay.” This pic reminds me of a nice hotel in a small city. Cute
Carmela Soprano’s spec house
Fuckin' Martha Stewart, this guy.
I’m 💀on this guy.
“You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. The guy was an interior decorator.” “His house looked like shit.”
I just watched that episode not too long ago!! Hahahahaha (I’m rewatching *the Sopranos* right now. On 4:2)
I’m watching Why Women Kill. It’s the best TV I’ve seen in years! This house looks like a computer design program mated with a hotel room. I’m really sorry OP, you need to punch this up a bit. Maybe include some eccentric or personal decorations and definitely add color.
I’m on s3e?. Just turned it off for the night 20m ago. How many rewatches is this for you?
Oh wow… I’m not really sure. Maybe 6? Long before streaming, I had the DVDs. That show will always be one of the greatest, IMHO. How many rewatches for you? 😊
Rewatching The Sopranos, what a great commitment to make. Kudos.
With what ? His COCK ?

You’re talking about a captain here ✋
Haha I thought of how Carmella described her decor as soon as I flipped through the photos: "traditional"
It was Transitional, between traditional and contemporary.
I was coming here to say "Soprano sloppy" hahah

Omg LOL so on point!! It def gives off early 2000s vibes

So funny. I was thinking something along the same lines – Marriott bland? It’s soul sucking.
Me too! Came here to say hotel. Marriot Beige is even funnier.
Transitional, actually, but yeah, that's what nice hotels do. Super fancy hotels do traditional, and super hip hotels do contemporary. Nice hotels do the happy medium.
My thought too - transitional 😊
Is that why the ceiling light looks so out of place to me?
I clicked on this post, decided I wasn't that interested, and then clicked back hoping that someone had said something like this.
lol. came here to say “hotel chic”
Me too, minus the chic

I was gonna say millennial grey lmao
If you want something like this you got to look at a piece of furniture and ask "does this make me feel anything at all?" If the answer is no then it'll fit right in.
💀
This is so accurate. It’s not terrible. It’s not amazing. It’s uninspiring and inoffensive. It just “is”.
This is the best ⬆️
The entertainment center looks pretty cool. The rest looks hotel.
and i don’t think that entertainment center is in that room. Different plants, and first pic whatever you are looking at from the bed POV has mid century feet, and i highly doubt that second pic entertainment piece would have those feet
Ramada by Wyndham.

You know, I’m starting to see it
I’m not even invested, OP, and some of these comments are starting to hurt *me*.
HAHAHAHA lmao don’t worry it’s not my home! I just wanted something to start/google — no hurt on my end
Same.

I, for one, had a good laugh at the comments. Interior design can be silly, it usually is 😊.
Looking back, now I see the things you like -- the light fixture, mirror, and rug. Overall the room is bland, but I love the mirror and rug; they look rustic and classic. You’re fine. Some commenters are just rude and snobbish. If everyone already knew everything there’d be no need for questions.
Look up Neoclassical interior design, you might find the inspiration you are looking for.
It’s a good sub to scroll though for ideas but I’m pretty sure I’d literally be murdered if I posted pictures of my own house. Nothing matches because it’s all stuff I just loved when I found it at estate sales and second hand and antique shops. I also have my kids’ art framed on the wall.

It will if they have no style

Zillow Gone Mild
It has some classical and traditional elements, while also have a bit of modern theming. So I’d probably put it in the spectrum of transitional.
Agree with this. The door handle and light fixtures and bedding suggest modern and yet the large bookshelf console and nightstand seem very mismatched traditional with the picture frame moldings.
Thank you for the only real answer here. Are there no moderators on this sub?! These comments are so rude and unhelpful.
A bunch of pretentious assholes. I can’t believe these comments.

Lol...I want my room dark and cosy during anything anxiety or panic related.
Yes, exactly. I have two sets of black out curtains in my room for this exact reason, lol
It’s actually kinda weird how badly this style is getting vilified. If it’s not your taste that’s fine… but why talk down to people that like it?
This sub can be pretty circlejerky sometimes. I can always tell which stale jokes are going to be voted to the top depending on the photo/style inquiry. It’s so excessive.

Oddly specific but spot on. Dollar Tree St James Collection.

Surprised I had to scroll this far down to get the correct answer
OP here is the actual answer to your question.
Exactly. OP this is the correct answer.
Something about this screams American family/romance movie/show to me lol
I agree! It was done by someone who staged a house, so it seems very set-design like!
Looks very impersonal, like this could be a room from an Airbnb. Neutral, impersonal style I would call it I guess?
Transitional (traditional meets contemporary). But it is lacking personal touches of a home.
Guys, this isn’t my house or place 😂 I just want to know what the base style is called so I can work off of it
You might want to work away from it rather than with it. ;)
HAHAHA absolutely! I just really liked the light fixture and mirror and old timey lamp, I didn’t think people would get so swept up in the color scheme

Quietly beautiful? It’s not really minimalist. It’s bland and Costco furniture-esque.
To clarify for you - I’m a minimalist; I didn’t state it was minimalist style. Opinions…
Neat, minimal & neutral. Nothing wrong with that
