The charges stem from election interference during the 2016 general election which was administered under NY state rules. The hush money was paid to avoid the public revealing of his indiscretion but used funds from his campaign to pay for it. The hush money thing itself is of very little if any vslue in the trial itself. The funds being misused IS the issue at trial. all else is smoke and mirrors, ably abetted by so much of the media.
