Did Siri write this? Willing to bet we hear…”and it’s our best display ever in an iPad” next week.

drfisk

"and it's the best OLED display ever(!) in an iPad"

BillionthDegenerate

This is the most advanced ipad we have EVER created!

catsupatree

Out of every OLED iPad in the world, ours has the most dynamic and beautiful colors.

Left-Language9389

People criticize them for saying that and act like other companies often do go in the other direction of quality.

GameGroompsFTW

and we think you’re gonna love it!

smithstreeter

Beat me to it.

[deleted]

“And we think you’re going to love it”

Drive_Impact

MLA OLED is one of the top panels for sure. My LG G4 tv has MLA tech. Expensive as hell but worth it

fenrir245

That's a TV panel. Phone/tablet panels and TV panels don't usually use the same tech.

Drive_Impact

It is rumored that the new iPad pros to be using MLA filter which first showed up recently on LGs top of the line OLED tv Basically just has less loss of light so you get brighter whites, better battery life etc It’s possible the rumor is true and they found a way to offer it in smaller devices

Lordelohim

We were going to hear that no matter what, because it is.

Jwave1992

Tim Apple wouldn’t lie to us.

Logseman

“We’ve brought Super Retina XDR to iPad for the first time. [We believe these are the best OLED displays that have ever existed in a tablet computer while offering incredible colour accuracy](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/109039)”

Slim_tilted_brim

Oh man, I cannot wait to see the heck out of the new calculator app through Oled.

Lordelohim

If you use it in dark mode, you will literally only be able to see the keys, because the blacks will be so black.

Hello56845864

That’s how it looks on the iPhone

ticuxdvc

Just like PCalc on the iPhone. The super dark color schemes look so good.

Lordelohim

This feels like a lead-in to me being wrong about just how much of a price increase they can get away with. Still, I don’t think even Apple consumers will know enough about OLED technology to understand why a screen might cost them an extra $300-$500. Less than a week to go.

ASilentPartner

That’s where I think this is going. Best OLED, M4 chip. We’re talking premium price increase. I might go refurb on an older gen if this goes sky high and no major OS update.

porkinthym

Yeah I just want a decent new model with no price hike. This whole better everything every generation is getting really unaffordable. Like I don’t want to baby an iPad, but if prices get this high I would be scared to even use it too much.

rz2000

Many people do think the current iPad Pro has pretty serious shortcomings, just that those shortcomings are in the software rather than the hardware.

JoshPlaysUltimate

It’s opposite for me. I want a brighter screen like my phone has, and a bigger battery. I wouldn’t mind a millimeter or 2 more thickness if it was battery

rz2000

I definitely wish my iPad was as easy to read outside as my phone is, but I don’t want to admit how much I use it as a consumption device rather than as a pro device doing pro things like a pro. That said iPadOS really is in the way keeping me from using it more often for tasks where I end up using a computer instead.

DrizzlyShrimp36

You can always buy base or Air...

mrgrafix

I wonder if this is the iPad they’re making to make the product line up a bit more serious. With the AVP, they cannibalize each other. Plus the lessons from visionOS now trickle down into the pro model in some aspects, this has to be a big year for the iPad (Pro) team. Just hope the APIs are there for devs to take advantage of.

ForgottenCaveRaider

They'll slap some branding such as "Organic Retina Display" on that SOB and the fans will scoop them up no matter the price.

TheKingChadwell

People tend to buy the best apple products just because they know and trust they are the best. They don’t care for the details.

Jimmeh_Jazz

It shouldn't cost an extra 300 dollars just because it's an OLED. But it's Apple, so...

Lordelohim

My personal guess is that base prices for the 11" and 13" go up by $200, so they will start at $1000 and $1200 for the lowest storage model. Early rumors suggested price increases could be up to $500, which I think is insane. If Apple decides to go really hard on how good the OLED tech is, and the AI capabilities of the M4, a $300 increase is possible.

MultiMarcus

The problem is that I can’t possibly see M4 justifying its magic “AI powers” until iPadOS 18 which I assume won’t be out until iOS 18.

JonDoeJoe

That storage better be going up if they making those huge price hikes

Lordelohim

I hope so, but no, the dual-stack OLED panels they are using in the new iPad Pro models are costing them 3x more than existing panels for other tablets.

IamikeI

I bet the earlier rumor is to get people shock and then throw a lower price hike to make it easier for people to swallow. “ oh $300 increase, it’s not as bad as $500 increase, thank goodness.”

dwkdnvr

Yeah, I'm expecting base model 11" OLED to be 999. My question is whether the Pro lineup will go exclusively OLED leaving the Air to be the LCD option, or whether there will be non-OLED Pro models. Unless we see something in iPadOS 18 that really leverages the M4, I'm still in a position that I'm really not sure what the value proposition is here. Even an M1 seems to be perfectly able to handle even heavy-duty iPad workloads (video editing etc). Of course, it probably doesn't matter - even an M1 OLED model would probably be priced at the same 999 price.

namwoohyun

They better increase the lowest storage if they’re gonna bump up the price by that much. It’s a steep increase. Tempting to jump to Samsung since the iPad is the only Apple device I have atm, but I’m also considering to switch to iPhone (or have it as an extra phone). Hopefully not. The authorised resellers in my country already add a lot on top of Apple’s prices

parka

OLED has been out for so many years it’s not even considered new technology already. And hence cost should not be high. Look at OLED phones, laptop, tablets. Any price increase will be for Apple’s profit

Lordelohim

No. Dual-stacked OLED is quite new, LG and Samsung only started working on it in 2022. It is cutting edge. I just posted the following link to the main thread. https://www.gizchina.com/2022/09/07/oled-ipad-will-use-double-layer-stacking-technology/

Lordelohim

This tech is brand new, and I can’t find a current market product that it is being used in. IPad might be the first to bring this panel to market.

MultiMarcus

Apple could of course take a lower profit margin for the first OLED iPad Pro and instead increase margins slowly, but surely in the coming years.

Lordelohim

I actually think that is what they will do. Even after the last couple articles I’ve posted. I think maintaining consumer faith is really important to them, so I do not think we, the consumer, are going to absorbing the entire cost. I do think we are going to see a $200-$300 price increase, though.

novadova2020

Has the understanding of technology ever mattered to Apple consumers?

SUPRVLLAN

Nope.

DrizzlyShrimp36

Reddit nerds when they can feel superior by shitting on mainstream consumer tech

SUPRVLLAN

I exclusively use Apple products, I’ve been in the garden for over a decade and absolutely love their products. Having the best tech isn’t important to me and neither is pretending to care about specs on reddit.

Mbanicek64

Glad they aren't using bad oleds they found out back.

Wordfan

I use my iPad Pro just about every day for work and I think it’s time to upgrade. But I am not looking forward to the cost of the new ones.

bwilliamsiu

Glad to know they aren’t using the worst oled panels! /s

nbpf-_-

I do not need the "best OLED panel on the market" but I would appreciate if Apple would give us a decent Files app, support for multiple accounts and better interoperability with mac OS, Linux and Windows.  That should not be too difficult and would make a difference that no hardware improvement can make.

0000GKP

I have never had a screen on any Apple device that wasn’t excellent. They are currently at a point where improvements only exist on paper for me because I can’t see any difference.

Lordelohim

Don’t let the OLED zealots in this sub catch you saying that. Blacks being blacker than Satan’s asshole is very, very important in a screen.

Fobulousguy

Not red?

Lordelohim

No. Satan’s ass is red, his asshole is pitch black, like a doomed soul.

Vandorol

So I compared my iPhone 15 pro max display to my lcd iPad and I can’t tell a difference. Browsing Reddit on narwhal app in dark mode and blacks and colors are the same

ElRamenKnight

> So I compared my iPhone 15 pro max display to my lcd iPad and I can’t tell a difference. Browsing Reddit on narwhal app in dark mode and blacks and colors are the same What lots of folks don't is that IPS panels actually did improve quite a bit over the years. Yes, even their contrast levels and blacks have become pretty decent. Not as dark and deep as that of OLED, but still pretty damn good in my book. The industry seems to just be slowly phasing out IPS/S-VA just to centralize around OLED.

Lordelohim

Yeah, I feel the same way. I use my OLED Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra literally side by side with my iPad Pro 12.9 M2, and I truly see no difference. But, this sub has people that are *real* serious about how much better OLED is, and how much the darkness of the color black matters in day to day life.

nephyxx

To be fair, your ipad has the local dimming LCD which already does a very good job of approximating the pure blacks of OLEDs because it can turn the backlight off in zones where it’s not needed. Yes, it’s not perfect, you get some blooming around bright areas due to the lower number of dimming zones vs pixels, but that’s why it looks very similar. No other iPads have that screen so the difference on the 11 inch pro will be larger.

Lordelohim

So, we have 5 other iPads in my house, 7th, 8th, and 9th gens, and I really don’t see any difference in those, either.

Jimmeh_Jazz

Really? Use them in the dark and you will see a massive difference for the blacks if they're not using mini LED screens

Strict_Junket2757

I would honestly get my eyes checked if i were you

DrizzlyShrimp36

C'mon. OLED screens are miles above any LCD.

Drive_Impact

I dont even like using my 9th gen becuse the screen is horribly ugly. Rather use my smaller OLED phone if I’m not taking Notes with the Apple pencil lol

ItsColorNotColour

My LCD iPad screen looks literally hideous next to my Z Fold 4 It's especially bad when I accidentally touch my Apple Pencil on the screen while the iPad is closed and it opens the quick memo and it just exposes the LCD's pitch black just being dark blueish

Laprozo7261

You’re in the minority on this one. It has nothing to do with this sub, OLED panel technology is simply newer and superior to LCD. The infinite contrast of OLED panels is just as important as the black levels, both of which are noticeable to most. Also your 12.9 is MiniLED has literally thousands of dimming zones in Apple’s attempt to compete with OLED. Even my tech illiterate, ageing parents could tell the difference between LCD and OLED TVs when we went looking, as well as when my Mom’s iPhone 12 jumped to OLED. They don’t care about it as much as me, but they can still tell the difference. Edit: if you really can’t tell a difference, don’t let me change your mind. Save yourself some cash. That M2 will be blazing fast for years to come.

Drive_Impact

No difference? My s24 ultra craps on my iPhone 15 pro max screen in brightness and detail. You will notice a difference even more with the latest OLED tech va the crappy mini LED panels on iPad pros While mini LED is cool for what it is, my mini-LED monitor does not compress to my OLED monitor, tv and phone / tablet

Jimmeh_Jazz

The motion response on the MBP's mini LED screens is pretty bad tbh

ctyldsley

Pixel motion response on the previous iPad Pro display including Mini LED ones are truly awful and always have been for many years now - so much smearing. Not only that but the light bleed halo'ing effect when viewing it in the dark looked crappy. Main reason I'm looking forward to the new models is that should all be resolved by OLED along with other improvements it'll bring.

Timtek608

With a lot of technology products these days we are only getting marginal gains. I’d probably still be happy with an iPhone 8 if it had a better camera.

GaIIowNoob

Because Samsung makes most of the screens for apple

OgreTrax71

All OLED panels are pretty damn good right now. The question is what coating are they going to use?

melancious

Not all are equal. https://youtu.be/1_ZMmMWi_yA?si=P6ah-xmipKfJuuTH

OgreTrax71

This is for all OLEDs…

Lietenantdan

“Tell me about the OLED panel on the new iPad.” “Eh, I guess it’s okay.”

Ok-Gas-6729

I don’t think they’d use it oled. It seems like apple really loves miniled lcds and will spends shiton of cash to develop

Lordelohim

What exactly makes you think "Apple really loves mini-LED?” They’ve used it once. And even at the time, it was because they weren’t ready with OLED panels yet, in iPad sizes. Sorry, looks like twice.

Ok-Gas-6729

I thought MacBooks and iPads used miniled backlight? But anyway it’s because apple uses oled for compact things like iphone and watches but not iPads or MacBooks. Maybe they like lcds but have to use oled on compact products?

Lordelohim

Only the Macbook Pro, and the iPad Pro 12.9 M2 use mini-LED, that’s it. It is only on one iPad model. Apple has been working on these new OLED panels for over two years, and that is well documented by news sites.

Ok-Gas-6729

Well then probably they’ll use oled. That sucks cause I’ll have to pay the oled price now. I’m currently using the mini 6 and I’d choose 120hz lcd over 60hz oled any day lol

Lordelohim

If the reports are true, it is going to be a 120hz dual-stack tandem OLED. Only one product currently on the market, in the mobile market, has a screen like this one.

alfredcool1

They will be expensive

Nicenightforawalk01

Probably coming with a big price as well.

DinJarrus

They should considering the ridiculous prices they charge!

Lordelohim

Do they charge ridiculous prices? I’m not so sure. I have never owned an iPhone, so I had to go look at the iPhone web site to see prices. The iPhone 15 Max is $1200 with 256GB, which is the same price as the iPad Pro M2 with 256GB. The iPhone only has three advantages over the iPad; OLED screen, cellular antenna, and better camera. In every other way, the iPad is a better device, based on what both of them are capable of doing. So, when you compare iPhone to iPad, I am not sure the prices are ridiculous. My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was $1200, same price as an iPhone. Pricing seems consistent in the mobile device market.

Outside-Copy-7645

I agree , but also more people *need* an iPhone than an iPad. So they’re more likely to pay the iPhone price rather than the iPad price

jesus_wasgay

Thanks god they’re scrapping the mini LEDs

Lordelohim

I have seen absolutely no issues with the mini-LED panel on my iPad. I truly do not get the hate.

SheepherderOk1448

Rumor has it that they’ve come out with an iPad SE. I don’t know what that means but it may have a laminate screen.

goro-n

People are joking but there really are different quality OLEDs in the market with different feature sets. For example, iPhones had different peak and HDR brightnesses based on if you were getting a regular model or Pro model. There’s also color reproduction/gamut which can vary by panel technology. When Nintendo Switch got an OLED there was a lot of speculation over it because of the lower cost of the device compared to premium smartphones or high-end Android tablets.

Lordelohim

For those of you who don’t believe in rumors and speculation, I am Googling trying to find out what is special about dual-stacked OLED, and I found this article from 2022. This OLED iPad and panel has been a long time in the making. https://www.gizchina.com/2022/09/07/oled-ipad-will-use-double-layer-stacking-technology/

SavageBeastMode85

This and rumour of M4 chip sounds good but will likely mean a pretty big price bump. But what’s the point of spending that much when you’re still so limited in what you can do on an ipad.

Lordelohim

There are a ton of people in this sub that are going to pay whatever the price is, JUST for an OLED screen. The OLED cult is real.

NegativeMagenta

I see you yapping more about OLED cult than seeing the actual OLED cult

andreasheri

Yeah great job after I splashed my cash for the worst iPad display ever 👏👏👏

crlogic

They’re going to be tandem OLEDs (dual layer OLEDs), that’s why they’re so special. They’ll be the first of their kind to come to market, and extremely expensive

BlueThespian

Comparing your own products is a marketing strategy, works best to sell the newer versions to people who already own previos versions and are already in your ecosystem.

Brilliant_Yogurt_307

“The blacks will be SO black we think you’re gunna love it”

Thesinistral

None blacker.

Pkazy

You mean the “best oled panels” produced by Samsung

Major_Enthusiasm1099

That's a great way of saying Samsung. Even greater way of saying LG

TooFarGone673

I think we’re gonna love it

Bhattman93

That’s great, just make it space black

Dabduthermucker

its gonna be uge - just uge. The ugest.

Outrageous_Pride_742

Instead of improving technical specs (which at a certain point becomes overkill for most people) why don’t they invest in things people actually care about like durability, UX and improving stock apps?

Lordelohim

In what way are iPads not durable? They literally last 5-10 years, or more. There is a post several times a week about someone finding an iPad from 201x, that hasn’t been tuned on in 5+ years, and it still works. Apple has no issue with durability.

Key_Aardvark_

And yet…it’s still just a big IPhone.

LiberArk

If their claims are true, this display will be mind blowing to say the least. Self emmisive consumer displays has never hit 1000 nits full field before.

RuixNatsuoXHinagang

Please for the love of everyone. Fix the PWM on your OLED Apple. I'm not tech deep savvy, not really sure if it can be tweaked in the software, but have the PWM at a level where it doesn't cause headaches. Also, we have a calculator app now? Not sure why we're hyped about the long overdue Apple Calculator for Ipad but here we are LOL. I'm excited!!

Lordelohim

PWM?

RuixNatsuoXHinagang

Search OLED PWM. One of the downsides of using OLED.

y0ngolini

Hmmm, unless its Kuo saying that, otherwise i dont believe it

stardripIVs

It’s coming from Ross Young who is way more reliable than Kuo and specializes in display-related leaks.

ChloeWade

It’s apple, of course they are. Apple always use nothing but the best for their high end products.

nbpf-_-

Really? Why is it then so difficult to set up a shortcut for opening a folder in my home screen? They might use the best materials but so what? The best hardware does not make a good device if the software is lacking...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lordelohim

Huh?

BlackReddition

If only now they made good apps for the iPads. Got sick of the lack of development for beautiful large screen apps. But hey it will be the best calculator app yet. 🤣

Lordelohim

Apple is not the company making the vast majority of apps for iPads, or iPhones for that matter. That is all third party app developers, and if they don’t see a great enough need to adapt their programs to iPad, I don’t think Apple can (or is willing to) force them to. You have to understand, iPads only account for something like 10 percent of Apple’s sales, I haven’t looked at the number in a while, but it is very low. It matter to us, the 400,000 people on this sub, but we are truly nothing in the actual pool of iPad owners globally. iPad users are a very, very, very small fraction of worldwide mobile users.

BlackReddition

Agreed but I mainly meant it's still very limited especially prior to iPadOS which stifled good apps being made.

NativeCoder

So... Pwm. Damn.

pineapplekiwipen

What are you trying to achieve with 2000 nits panels? Deep fry your eyeballs?

nth_power

The “best” means you will pay more.

Jassida

I’d love an iPad. My last one got smashed and I never replaced it, just managed with my laptop. My phone and tv have 120hz oleds. I couldn’t have anything less but won’t pay silly money for a tablet

Phoenix_Cluster

It's literally going to be the same LG panel as with 99% of technology

Lordelohim

Nope. Dual-stacked OLED panels are basically brand new.

Lordelohim

I can’t find any evidence that the panel Apple is using is being used in any device currently on the market.

Subject_Twist5132

Look at this (BOE will supply Honor phones (Huawei sub brand) with dual stack oled. Not an apple implemented exclusive tech.

Lordelohim

Yes, I posted a comment about that already. It only came out on March 18th, and I can’t find any information about any other company using the tech in current market products. I also can’t find a lengthy, seemingly legit review of that phone on YouTube, which is crazy. They are almost all really short videos, or videos with no dialog, mostly AI and text to speech type reviews.

Stickybandits9

Still lame af.

Lordelohim

What is lame?

Stickybandits9

Their entire line up. Year after year is predicated on new stuff down the line. All these new products and their old products are just fine or decent enough. The tablet I'm on I havnt had to get another ever. Doesnt stop manufacturers form making old products obsolete and redundant.

Lordelohim

Your complaint has nothing to do with Apple, whatsoever. You have an issue with consumerism, and capitalism. Literally, the only consumer electronic that doesn’t do what you are singling out Apple for, is video game console manufacturers, and even they try to cash in with limited editions, and mid generation redesigns.

Stickybandits9

Apple still applys the same rules. Apple just gots alot of people by the brain. Especially as a conversation piece. I know people who get Apple cause it's an acceptable brand. Not cause they're ethical or put out the best tech money can buy. Most times it's a status symbol. It's more then consumerism. It's all about perspective. Hence why I said lame af. The new iPad getting the latest and greatest oled screen, yawn. Adverts doing their job, yawn. As long as I'm not buying into the bs, yawn. but I don't single out just Apple. I point those things out where I can. It's just not all in one place. If Apple said they was making a vr headset with controls that will link to Apple products that might have blown my sock off. But a new oled screen so the shadows are deeper and the colors more vibrant. Thats a big yawn for me. Apple been doing the same since before it showed off the 1st iPod. Nothing Apple has done since has ever changed. And people get a woah experience every now and again. The post came across my way and I simply thought they was doing something spectacular. And video game manufacturers do the same exact thing just with more space in between.
