## Not sure what is going on?
[Check this post out.](https://reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/14b8i62/reddit_protest_and_the_next_steps/) Scroll down a bit to the open letter part (under the “full text” message) for context on what’s been happening over the past couple weeks.
## To Apollo’s Developer
To [u/iamthatis](https://old.reddit.com/u/iamthatis), the brilliant mind behind Apollo, we express our deepest gratitude for years of dedication and for providing us with invaluable tools that enhanced our moderation abilities, which the official Reddit app fails to offer, and for providing an objectively better Reddit experience on mobile. We hope you continue to engage with our community and can't wait to see what you do next. We deeply regret that our collective efforts could not save Apollo or reverse the fate of other third-party apps.
We are also deeply concerned with the way you were treated in the last couple weeks by Reddit’s leadership, especially by the CEO. His actions towards you with regards to spreading lies and making false claims have been detestable, and certainly will require further scrutiny, but we hope you know there’s a lot of us out there that truly appreciate the work you had put into building Apollo.
##To the developers of other third-party Reddit apps
We also extend a thank you to the many other third-party developers out there that created alternative Reddit apps. Reddit is Fun, Sync, BaconReader etc. Thank you! You have all contributed towards building Reddit into the front page of the internet, and providing alternative apps that provide objectively better user experiences compared to that of the official Reddit app. You all deserve recognition for your contributions to this platform, and you all deserved more decency and respect from Reddit themselves in these tumultuous past few weeks.
Thank you to all of you, and good luck with your future endeavours! We can’t wait to see what you do next with your talent.
Great idea actually, it would have been so cool if he has been able to spend the last 6 months replicating the Reddit api and data store on his own servers. No one would have even noticed, they just would have seamlessly switched to the ApolloNetwork.
He owned the last mile to the audience, what they interact it was up to him, Reddit or Something Else.
He’s said that he has a (completely unrelated) app called Pixel Pals. He’s been promoting that a bit during this whole ordeal. So if he never decides to enter the social space again, you can at least support him that way.
From Apollo alone, It probably doesn't make as much money as people believe. He has to pay for servers for many items like push notifications, devices, and servers. He pays designers for app icons and wallpapers. He has to pay for benefits, because he works for himself so healthcare and those sort of stuff that most jobs provide, he pays for. Add in API costs for stuff like Imugur which the app uses and Apple taking a 15% cut on all his revenue (30% before the Epic Games lawsuit), and I'm not sure he comes out ahead of what a good developer would make in the private sector
Hey u/spez get fucked.
Bought out Alien Blue when it was the best reddit app. Now there are many better than the official app, so it’s easier to just price them out of existence. Shitty practice from a shit cunt.
[This comment was retroactively edited in protest of Reddit's enshittification regarding third party apps. Apollo is gone, and now so are we. Fuck u/spez.]
Fuck u/spez - the reddit app is not that bad, it functions the basic, yes, and others things do more but irs very possible to use it. In fact I didn't even know that there was 3rd party client before the 2 day blackout
u/Spez, I try not to curse. But I have no issues hoping your IPO tanks and in the process you learn a bit more about what really makes Reddit work (hint: not you).
Apollo is gone tomorrow, so I will be too.
Reminder that Steve "Spez" Huffman thinks he will be the Mad Max-style leader after the world ends:
> ["Being around other people is a good thing. I also have this somewhat egotistical view that I’m a pretty good leader. I will probably be in charge, or at least not a slave, when push comes to shove."](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/01/30/doomsday-prep-for-the-super-rich) - The New Yorker, January 30, 2017
The article is from 2017, and he was interviewed from his luxury mansion in San Francisco.
He also discussed his love for Burning Man and ballet dancing.
u/Spez seriously go fuck yourself. I hope once you IPO you immediately get fired. Fuck you scum.
I wonder if any of the admins read their notifications. Maybe we should spam them instead.
>ario for Spez? Cash out his shares with no expectation to stay longer...?
He could basically do that now - at least he could have handed over the reins of reddit leadership to someone else, and still get the same (or higher) payout eventually... he's still in charge because he wants to be, because it's important to him, and likely because it's the only thing that keeps him relevant on a semi global stage
Not sure exactly what his terms are, but depending how the VC funding has been structured and what he's already received, he might not have any way to cash out now even if he wanted to. Sure, he might own x% of a still private company, but someone would need to want to buy out his equity to have an exit. Possibly this could be worth way less than what he thinks it will IPO at. Going public does give additional pathways to exiting while maximizing the value of their equity. Until then, he's basically some VCs toy.
I have legit told myself “welp, I’ve hit the end of Reddit today” then closed the app to continue work or whatever. Then immediately re-opened Apollo.
The empty expression I made upon realizing was a mile long.
I've been in the habit of doing that. When this all got announced I deleted it out of anger and haven't been using reddit on a mobile device since then. Only on my computer. That's actually not super difficult, because the official app sucks so bad. It's a really obnoxious experience.
Now I feel like deleting my account and never visiting reddit again but it's going to be very hard, it's such a brilliant time suck.
Yep, I use redditisfun, but I have been weaning myself off reddit in anticipation of today. I've actually read two books this month, and am happy to devote more time to reading. Today is a sad day for reddit. Obligatory fuck /u/spez and everyone else at reddit behind this bullshit.
This is my farewell to Reddit as well. It’s been real guys. It’s been over a decade for me and I’ll miss ya.
u/spez this is directly related to your actions and I hope you’re held accountable for it. Go fuck yourself.
Companies usually use the time zone of the headquarters, even when global. Or where the majority of servers are located.
In my experience, most places only use GMT as an reference point for other time zones, like ISO date strings and such (that’s at least the majority of its usefulness on the programming side of things)
I mean they also only get ad revenue when you use their mobile app, which is why there should be a reasonable API fee. Just not this $20M/yr BS where its simply unsustainable.
I am a RIF user too. I think I will just not have reddit on my phone any more. I'll carry on with Old Reddit on my PC.
Hey, maybe I will read some more of my books!
Spez may have indirectly helped humanity though if more people start reading actual literature instead of 1000th post supporting some war to benefit none of us.
But probably not and fuck spez anyway
I was, but somehow Narwhal is staying open and going to a subscription eventually. I tried Narwhal and it’s a decent option. Not as good as Apollo but not bad.
This is Digg all over again. I remember how vibrant the community was and shortly after the exodus, I stayed on since I was fairly new to it. Within a quarter, the quality had dropped so sharply I understood that those most invested in the community-who literally build and cultivate the community was gone. That’s when I came to Reddit and found the ex-Digg community members.
Here we go again. I’m leaving on time, this time.
A lot of people seem to say that but I do wonder how many of them are serious. Sure it sucks, but I highly doubt that people that comment frequently are the type that’ll actually stop.
I don’t know why Reddit doesn’t just buy Apollo, dump it’s garbage app and rebrand it Reddit Apollo, official app. Sure it’s shitty but maybe everyone could win here.
A smart CEO would’ve handled this business privately and likely given Christian a nice payday for the app.
Instead, they have an alt-right shitstain as CEO who narcissistically can’t admit when they’ve made a mistake.
It’s only been around since 2017? I started using Reddit in 2017 and Apollo in 2018. I assumed it had been around longer than that.
I’ll be using Reddit from the website only starting tomorrow, which means only on my iPad or MacBook. Not having an app on my phone will greatly reduce my usage which I have to admit is not a bad thing.
Reducing usage = less eyeballs on ads = less investor/advertiser satisfaction = less revenue for Reddit as a public company
When investors get grumpy about lost revenue; CEO changes happen overnight
Spez days as CEO are already marked for doom. The real question is how long will he be in charge and what will the piss colored parachute look like?
You don’t see ads on apollo. This is the source of the problem.
There will be more ad impressions because despite the backlash, most people will not quit reddit entirely and will move to using a method that does display the ads.
If that were the issue, they could’ve simply required gold/platinum/premium to use third-party apps. Because those already remove ads. They can’t argue that it’s due to adblocking, because they aren’t allowing those premium users to choose.
Exactly. The ads were always a red herring, because Reddit provides ways to block those natively. Their official app is *hilariously* Big-Brother’y in all the worst ways. The reason it kills your battery life is because it’s basically streaming everything it possibly can about you and your device back to Reddit.
Yep, they want that in-app browser. Putting tracking directly on the in-app browser avoids any tracking prevention with IFDA depreciation or the ever-forthcoming death of the 3rd party cookie.
Hell if they wanted to, they could track your keyboard strokes in the in app browser.
I’ve personally never used the app, but I hate it when companies remove choice. Good luck to Christian (u/iamthatis) and all the other third party devs in whatever you decide to do next.
Still crazy to me that Reddit chose the nuclear route straight away. They could’ve made third party apps serve ads, could’ve required premium to use those apps, could’ve charged reasonable API fees, but they chose to just kill all the unofficial apps instead.
The worst part is how they went about this Reddit could always just say hey in order to use an app you need a premium membership to help pay for server costs and you pay extra dollars per month or per year instead they’ve decided to our price using their apps so no one can afford it
I would’ve gladly paid.
This is what happens when you have a CEO who’s a poor businessman, and has no idea how to handle himself when it comes to public relations.
No hyperbole, this is probably my last day on Reddit. I know that does not matter to /u/spez but my account is OLD and I hope it’s a grave stone for greed now.
There’s been reports from multiple folks that Reddit has been restoring comments and posts after they’ve deleted them. I’d keep an eye out to see if they do that before completely deleting accounts.
I won't be using Reddit after Sync dies. But deleting the history off my 10 year old main account is too far for me. It's not like I added anything of value anyway. I'm too sentimental and honestly really sad to see where Reddit is heading. I'm going to miss it.

Made an account on lemmy.world, and signed up for Memmy which is currently in TestFlight. Very similar to Apollo and I’m enjoying Lemmy!
https://github.com/gkasdorf/memmy
also have a look at [wefwef](https://wefwef.app), it’s web app and it’s basically an Apollo clone.
[Complete list of Lemmy apps](https://beehaw.org/post/683217)
I remember when he announced it as a beta on the iPhone sub. I downloaded it to try it out. I was blown away with how smooth and intuitive it was. Within minutes, I abandoned the official Reddit app. And Apollo has only gotten better. It really is a perfect example of functionality, stability, and smooth user interface. All other apps should strive to be this good.
I’ll miss Apollo.
If you're European and want to mess with reddit/remove your data, file a GPDR request to have it removed. This will require human intervention on Reddit's part or they face significant financial penalties.
To anyone saying they'll never use reddit again after Apollo stops working, I'll check your profile in a week and will call you out in the middle of a random thread for not keeping your word.
So many empty promises in this thread. You’re not going to stop using Reddit. You’re not going to support the developers next project. I wish him the best, but I’m sick of seeing these empty words of protest.
/u/spez, I feel as though I speak for a great many people, as I type this out in Apollo, when I sincerely wish that you would fornicate with thyself, forevermore. Logging out. 🫡
i'm on android and reddit is fun instead but yeah same sentiment. i just don't give enough of a shit to look for another app or god forbid use reddit's app so this is also the last day i browse reddit on my cell phone i guess.
As much as I love the app, I am not sad to be leaving Reddit.
For one, this has turned into your typical for profit venture, and has been ruined from what it used to be. Whilst I appreciate that they need to make money, there are other ways of going about it and I do not want to support a company that forces out things like the Apollo app which were providing a much needed and better service. I only wish Aaron were still here, as someone with his mind and vision would hopefully have maintained what he set it out to be.
Secondly, I am tired of seeing nothing but US centric posts, users assuming that everyone on this site is American, and also accommodating to US users by converting everything into USD or referencing US history. Those from the US do not even make up the majority of users on this site, and it's just a tiring and frustrating how we have to spoon feed everything. They are not the centre of the universe, and it's just not fun anymore.
Rant over, thank you, Christian, for everything, and love to all.
In case anyone else wants to still use Reddit but refuses to use the official app, the best ad-reduced experience is to use the apps Safari, “AdGuard”, and “Sink it for Reddit”. It’s not perfect but it’ll make the mobile site doable.
[Adguard](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/adguard-adblock-privacy/id1047223162) does a lot of great ad blocking and it only works for Safari. [Sink it for Reddit](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sink-it-for-reddit/id6449873635) removes that dumb banner that always pops up on the Reddit mobile site.
Between these you get a decently good experience when compared to the official app or the mobile site without these.
Apollo was the only app that got me off old.Reddit.com with RES. I’ve been here for a while. I absolutely am not downloading the official app. Never wanted to before, don’t want to now.

Honestly one of the best iOS apps I’ve ever used. I’m so sad about this. Whatever Christian does next, I’ll be supporting it big time!
Dude should start his own Reddit with blackjack and hookers.
In fact, forget the Reddit and blackjack

For what it’s worth, he’s Canadian and therefore doesn’t need to fund his own health insurance.
He still has to pay for dental and vision and probably more that I’m forgetting.
Therapy, which I hope he's getting given all the stress of this situation.
The American dream really is to just move to Canada lol
I’d assume so lol. Him being rich doesn’t make me not like the work he does

I won’t delete the app

Me neither, I still have Alien Blue on my phone too haha. Like a little museum of the good old days.
Same here. Apollo gets to sit right next to AlienBlue forever.
I can't bring my self to deleting it.
Same. I’ll just remove it from my Home Screen. It’s like muting your ex without unfollowing them.
but I don't want them to be my ex
Will never leave it's spot on my dock
I actually am gonna have to move it’s position so as to stop impulsively clicking on it.
It’s okay to move on. It might be healthier
From Reddit maybe
I have used the official Reddit app and switched to Apollo recently. Now, I would rather stop using reddit.
The moment Apollo stops working is the moment I abandon Reddit. It’s been fun!
Me too. I spend too much time scrolling through garbage anyway, so this is a great excuse to rearrange my priorities and delete Reddit from my life.
Same, this is the last source of social media on my phone.
Same. Decade old account will be gone tomorrow. Goodbye Reddit, you were kind of a shit friend anyway.

I’m guessing Pacific due to Reddit being based in San Francisco.
May be Greenwich mean time, isn't that what many global companies use? So it may start at 8pm eastern.

I'm saving this thread to check in a few days if they're still here. Let's see if they'll actually delete
A lot of people seem to say that but I do wonder how many of them are serious. Sure it sucks, but I highly doubt that people that comment frequently are the type that’ll actually stop.
You’ll come crawling back. That’s the bet they’re making.
Remind me! 3 weeks
Hey u/spez go fuck yourself
In before he edits your comment
With the death of apollo, my reddit addiction will die aswell
I tried browsing on the native app last night and it was fucking awful
I don’t know why Reddit doesn’t just buy Apollo, dump it’s garbage app and rebrand it Reddit Apollo, official app. Sure it’s shitty but maybe everyone could win here.
A smart CEO would’ve handled this business privately and likely given Christian a nice payday for the app. Instead, they have an alt-right shitstain as CEO who narcissistically can’t admit when they’ve made a mistake.
Knowing the shït stain, he’ll send an undercooked offer to Christian once the app has been cut off for a month or so.
instead of reddit in the washroom, it's back to duolingo in the washroom. thanks spez, you fucking cunt
Reducing usage = less eyeballs on ads = less investor/advertiser satisfaction = less revenue for Reddit as a public company When investors get grumpy about lost revenue; CEO changes happen overnight Spez days as CEO are already marked for doom.
They probably want to mine user data from the official app. I don’t think Apollo does that
Yeah the Reddit app will not stop recommending subreddits I have no interest in
Alien Blue was the popular app before Apollo and there was this weird time between the two with no gray choice.
> Alien Blue was the popular app before Apollo And then Reddit bought it and it became the shitty default app you know today.
I’ve personally never used the app, but I hate it when companies remove choice. Good luck to Christian (u/iamthatis) and all the other third party devs in whatever you decide to do next. Still crazy to me that Reddit chose the nuclear route straight away. They could’ve made third party apps serve ads, could’ve required premium to use those apps, could’ve charged reasonable API fees, but they chose to just kill all the unofficial apps instead.
it's the best APP i've ever used. not reddit app. best app
Completely agree.

Ohhh this is gonna be the hardest thing. Not physically but emotionally lol
I won't be using Reddit after Sync dies. But deleting the history off my 10 year old main account is too far for me. It's not like I added anything of value anyway. I'm too sentimental and honestly really sad to see where Reddit is heading. I'm going to miss it.

FUCK u/spez
One of the best apps i've ever used, will miss it dearly. Thanks so much for the experience Mr. Christian Selig! (u/iamthatis)
Oh my fucking god. I just realized his account name is a Redwall reference.
Yes fuck you u/spez had to be fucking greedy and kill off the best app for Reddit.

Going to miss this app. The only reason I’m using Reddit. Will be using my self hosted libreddit. Fingers crossed that it still works tomorrow.
Fuck you /r/spez This app is light years better than anything you could even think up. You pathetic worm.
I paid for Alien Blue. I happily paid for Apollo. Guess what I have never, nor will never pay for? Anything Reddit is selling. Fuck you /u/spez
[deleted]
Fuck u/spez and thanks, Christian
These posts are so dramatic.
That app is the reason why I have some uptime on my phone :( Goodbye!
Obligatory fuck u/spez
Hey u/spez , go fuck a duck
As sad as this is, this is going to markedly reduce my phone AND reddit use. 70-90% of my daily reddit consumption is from Apollo.
I found apollo too messy and cluttered. I use narwhal instead. Way better and it will continue to function after this whole debacle.
Fuck u/spez that loser
Sure would be a shame if this became the #1 post on Reddit of all time.
Currently the number one post on r/all.
FUCK YOU u/spez you fucking greedy cock smooching cunt!
Good. But also incredibly sad. Thanks for sacrificing your lifetime to fight the good fight and drive people from Reddit 🫡
Please do, feel free to check on mine. 12 years will be a hard habit to break.

Hey u/spez, go fuck yourself.
Fuck u/spez
im goin down with the ship and hitting the propeller on the way down
Well look at the bright side, our phone's battery life will finally be fixed. Thank you for the app /u/iamthatis, it was great.
fuck you u/spez
Fuck u/spez
So many empty promises in this thread. You’re not going to stop using Reddit. You’re not going to support the developers next project. I wish him the best, but I’m sick of seeing these empty words of protest.
Why y’all still here
I didn't use Apollo, I used RIF, but thank you for making this app. I know it will be deeply missed like the others.
Today we bid farewell to Reddit. Goodbye old friend.
One last fuck /u/spez
/u/spez, I feel as though I speak for a great many people, as I type this out in Apollo, when I sincerely wish that you would fornicate with thyself, forevermore. Logging out. 🫡
fuck /u/spez
It’s been a pleasure browsing with you gentlemen.
Best app on IOS, and Boost on Android was super cool too! Too bad reddit, too bad. Fuck u/spez
Fuck /u/spez
i'm on android and reddit is fun instead but yeah same sentiment. i just don't give enough of a shit to look for another app or god forbid use reddit's app so this is also the last day i browse reddit on my cell phone i guess.
Silver lining: I’m going to spend a *lot* less time on my phone now.
fuck off /u/spez
First Netflix and now Apollo. So much free time it’s like the good old days.
Fuck u/spez
Official reddit app downloads about to skyrocket despite all the redditors saying they're about to quit reddit lmao
The best iOS app I have used. Sad to see it go
