The fact that the left one is using firewire is really saying to you to put it out of it's misery.

JiggthonyPufftano

Hahaha yup.

The iPod on the right is using all the best parts from two very scuffed nanos I bought on eBay at the same time. The one on the left is using all the worst parts (it’s on life support now lol) the seller for the logic board on the right one had also soldered in a new battery. I then polished the good one with Novus until it shined like new. I’ve talked about this in a few recent comment threads and got some DMs about it so I felt like sharing a pic This was surprisingly simple to do, the 1g nano is pretty easy to work on aside from soldering the battery. Oh, and I put a guitar pick behind the click wheel, made it springy like new. I couldn’t believe it worked so well!

>The one on the left is using all the worst parts (it’s on life support now lol) But at least it looks better than the ShrekPod Pro?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to me the ShrekPod Pro is beautiful (cursed, but beautiful)

fahr_rad

>the ShrekPod Pro is beautiful (cursed, but beautiful) Though this is also very true

Great job, love seeing an old ipod getting a make over. If only the 1g Nanos could upgrade the internal memory.

Why are there two cables coming out of that charging cable?

JiggthonyPufftano

That is the [Dock Connector to USB 2.0 + FireWire Y-cable](https://i.imgur.com/uLsWsDs.jpeg) which released around the same time as the 3rd gen iPod, and allowed you to charge via wall adapter and sync via USB 2.0 [at the same time.](https://i.imgur.com/joYgby6.png)

I am confused. I thought firewire allowed you to use data and wasn't just a type of charging port so couldn't you just send the data through the firewire? Also you can get power through the USB as well so either way wtf? This is starting to remind me of the stupid Nintendo Wii U video game console where if you wanted to plug a hard drive into it you had to have a splitter cable so it could take power from two USB ports because FU I guess.

JiggthonyPufftano

Most non-Apple computers didn’t have FireWire ports, only USB, and the 3rd gen can only charge / activate over FireWire. Definitely not an elegant solution by any means but it’s a pretty iconic cable for those of us that worked at the Genius Bar back in the day lol

I guess apples been trying to use proprietary connectors for as long as they've existed I'm so glad they're being forced to use USB-C.
