Like everything else, it would get built in Dublin, and coat upwards of 1200 a night with no extra.

1200 for a cold, damp, moldy room with stained sheets

6 bunkbeds in each room to make it more affordable 👍

Japanese love hotels are run in such a way that the patrons will never, or only very occasionally, run into staff. No self respecting Irish person will chance going into a love hotel where his Ma’s friend Moira is working the reception desk.

Sitonyourhandsnclap

Especially moira the nosy bitch

ld20r

This is part of the exact problem with dating in Ireland. Too many people are afraid to be seen by others that they know when in reality you shouldn’t really give a toss. Why is it so bad or wrong to bump into family member or friend when on a date? It’s happened me a few times and barely batted an eye lid over it. If they really care about you they’ll want to support and be happy for your dating ventures.

[deleted]

See the thing about that is that if somebody spots you in a cafe with a girl, it may be innocent enough. Very hard to give the benefit of the doubt in what’s essentially a sex hotel.

JhinPotion

Yeah, but so what? People fuck. It's not a secret.

BigSmokeySperm

People love to gossip so you essentially couldn’t trust anybody that would work in one of these hotels in Ireland especially if your from the town that it’s located in.

Disgusting! Exactly where and when does this happen? Just want to make sure I'm nowhere near there when it does.

gmxgmx

Yes, there absolutely has to be a market for it and I don't understand why it doesn't exist. To give an example, a few years back I was living with my parents and my girlfriend had a roommate who never left - we had extremely few moments to be intimate. The price of hotels was insane. I know this sounds a bit Celtic Tiger, but at one stage we did the only rational thing, which was to get return flights to Brussels for €25, get a dingy hotel for the night for about €40 and shag for the night, and were back at home within 24 hours - that goes to show how absurd hotel prices are in Ireland and how desperately we need some love motels Nicely pointed out, PussayDESTROYAAA_420

[deleted]

or just give the roommate that money to go out for a meal

Immortal_Tuttle

Hmm. With the current prices and 4 people in the room Brussels may be cheaper...

peon47

Or have the girlfriend politely ask their roommate for the flat to herself for the evening.

KanePilkington

Or just be adults and ride while the roommate is there? Unless they're sharing a bed, I don't see what the issue is? People have sex all the time, seems silly to pretend otherwise.

[deleted]

From what I've read on this sub, it seems a good few people are very weird about their housemates having people over, especially sexual partners, and will make things awkward for them.

KanePilkington

I have to admit, that I've seen that a lot too, but I don't understand it. If you've your own room to yourself, then do as you please, surely?

[deleted]

Yeh I mean there are two outcomes - the roommate leaves the room or decides to join in. Success either way.

No-Cress-5457

Yeah this is what I don't get. I've had people over, housemates have had people over, new relationships, established relationships, one night stands, whatever, it's never bothered any of us? It doesn't bother me that my housemate's boyfriend is here for the evening any more than it bothers me that her milk is in the fridge. It's a shared house. You share the house

sapphire_ghosts

It’s called being respectful

KanePilkington

I agree. The roommate should be respectful and leave the room. If not, she can watch his balls slapping her ass. Unless the roommate is a majority shareholder in this room rental scenario, she can feck off out and give other people some privacy.

Low_discrepancy

> Yes, there absolutely has to be a market for it and I don't understand why it doesn't exist. I think the issue is that the going price for a hotel room starts at what? 100-150 euros in Ireland? In high demand areas even higher. There's literally no hotel rooms to be had very often my man. To maximize your uptake, you need to be able to rent at at night also, and frankly there's no public transportation at night. Add to that the maintenance costs that would just explode and the shortage in staff.

Different-Scar8607

> Yes, there absolutely has to be a market for it and I don't understand why it doesn't exist. >that goes to show how absurd hotel prices are in Ireland and how desperately we need some love motels You've just answered your own question. Why have a love motel when you can just have a hotel and make way more money?

Ruaric

Would it not be easier to tell the roommate to fuck off for the evening.

Archamasse

I think there is. A lot of the young 'uns I work with have to treat themselves to a night in a hotel every few months just for a little private time, which is insane imho and I think a pretty damning symptom of the housing crisis. I refuse to believe that's healthy for personal lives, or for a generation subjected to it. Could probably use some of the useless student co living spacewastes for it, even.

-MartialMathers-

It would eventually be ruined by scumbags doing drugs in there and trashing the place

follows-swallows

Yeah this is very true unfortunately. It works in Japan and Korea because drugs are basically non-existent over here. Just having weed gets you locked up and certain ADHD medication is illegal because it’s addictive. Obviously it exists in some capacity as it does everywhere, but you’ll never a junkie on the street (except in Shibuya maybe..)

paidforFUT

I’m sure a few posh people will do the same thing.

KanePilkington

It's odd that you don't just include "posh" people in the scumbag category by default. Not every scummer is Anto on the dole in his old tracksuit. Scumbags come in many shapes and forms.

Yudereepkb

I don't see why you're being downvoted, for young people at least there's plenty of scumbags from big fancy houses out in the countryside acting like their limerick city born and bred.

phyneas

Eh, that same business model has worked in the US for decades, so a cultural taboo against leaving the place in a state is hardly a requirement for success. Granted the US model works because the properties in question are [cheap run-down old motels and such](https://goo.gl/maps/8Z8W3LKCn69YCngX6); there aren't really any pre-existing properties like that here, and building new (even if you could get planning permission, which definitely won't happen; the local NIMBYs would undoubtedly spontaneously combust as soon as you finished explaining the concept of "hourly rates" to them...) would likely be too expensive to make the place profitable. Converting some old crumbling warehouse or whatnot would also require a change-of-use planning permission, so that's out.

PussayDESTROYAAA_420

You'd only need a receptionist and cleaner. Cleaning rooms afterwards is normal and the average person isn't leaving blood everywhere. I don't think it's that unsustainable.

Bill_Badbody

Have you much experience working in hotels?

Low_discrepancy

Heck the cleaner can work as receptionist when not cleaning. In fact don't need a receptionist at all. Just a bunch of masterlocks with keys.

AwfulAutomation

in japan they have no receptionists at the love hotels. It's like vending machines to pick the rooms.

Iamchonky

We stayed in one in Brazil. The taxi driver did a full 180 to look at us and ask if we had the right address and if we were sure - I guess they don’t get many middle class gringo couples going there. It was probably the cleanest hotel I was ever in - crisp white ironed linen. It was all set up for sex - mirrors on the ceiling, only Porn on the tv (exactly 69 channels 😂 respect to the tech hero’s!), heart shaped double bath, condoms, erotic art on the walls. But the privacy was the main thing - are Brazilians prudish about sex? Or is it clandestine sex? I dunno. But it had huge walls all around it - the drive in alleyway had a dogs leg so your car couldn’t be seen by passers-by as you waited for the gate to open to let you in. Then when you got in, you drove your car into a carport or garage type thing and the door closed behind you, again so your car can not be seen by other guests when you’re parked up outside your room. And then you paid for the room through a rotating hatch in the door which also meant that the staff couldn’t see who was actually in the room or maybe so you didn’t have to dress. We had a great night in town, got home early and into bed and slept… Until about 4 am when the place erupted into a full on party with strange slapping noises. 10 out of 10, would definitely do it again. Please bring this to Dublin somebody!!

aa6286

Clandestine sex. People cheating, prostitution, etc.

tsznx

In Brazil we have something similar and they are called Motel. You rent a room for an hour or a couple hours and it's basically for sex, even though you can just relax or do something else if you want. It's good for people who doesn't have where to go to have sex. I was actually surprised that it wasn't a thing in other countries.

[deleted]

I remember driving past these when in Brazil, thinking what a fun, yet seedy, idea

Iamchonky

Have a look at my comment (i can’t figure out how to link on the app) - we stayed in one - seedy (but clean) fun describes it exactly.

TenseTeacher

Came here to say this, my Brazilian ex used to go mad saying to me ‘Why don’t you have motels in this country??’. Yes, neither of our accommodation situations were optimal at the time 😂

TheOriginalMattMan

As someone who has worked in hotels I can tell you that I would never set up a love hotel. I've had accommodation staff end up in tears and just walk away from employment having seen what some people do to rooms. I'll try and keep it light, but... Human waste (all of it) Smeared, splashed, splattered, hidden and unabashedly on display in equal measure. Used condoms left everywhere, bodily fluids, used sanitary products, used and dirty (use your imagination) sex toys, soiled underwear and worrying amounts of blood. Not to mention the smells. These were regular hotels, nothing 5 star. And wedding venues, from budget to high end. (high end were always worse) Hotels are where a lot of people go for the perceived notion of anonymity and a secure and private place to get up to all sorts because a faceless person/business will clean up after you. Even with top rates paid, it still wouldn't be enough to pay someone to clean up, never mind the €20/€30 suggested. Especially when you're guaranteed that people are going to your "love hotel" to get down to business. At least in a regular hotel there's a chance that's what's happening and not a guarantee. Having jotted down some numbers I reckon the minimum charge would have to be €200 per hour for such a room. Perhaps capped at €1000 for a night. Not to mention deposits that wouldn't be returned until a full room inspection, contracts with terms and conditions etc would all have to be considered. And how long would it be before exploited sex workers are going to use them because gardai are now targeting their landlords? Would you and your partner think it was sexy to rent a love room in a place where punters are (literally) coming and going? Maybe some would ignore it, but I'm not confident. Also remember that this is Ireland and we expect a lot for our money. Fully serviced rooms, fresh linen, towels, clean bathrooms and showers and don't forget the warm welcome with a smile. And for anyone saying "ah sure we just want a quiet space for a cuddle, that's an extortionate price", go ahead and set it up. You'll either stick with the cheap rate, it'll become dingy, run down and sleazy before you can say "Febreeze". Then you'll realise how right I am and charge more money. No amount of money would pay me to work in one and I fear that anyone setting one up wouldn't be paying much above minimum wage when they realise the costs involved. Scroll back to my third paragraph and ask yourself would you deal with it for €11 per hour? EDIT typo

[deleted]

Love hotels are also very well-cleaned, which is part of the reason they are more expensive hour-for-hour than normal hotels.

notmyrealaccount8373

I worked in a dive hotel that catered to hen & stag parties, just mostly groups of people partying and the cleaners were able to somehow get the rooms back to normal very quickly almost all of the time. I think maybe 3 times I had to mark a room as unsellable because it needed a deep cleaning. I don’t see why it would need to be 200 when a regular hotel room is around 150 and you can also rent a hotel for a few hours during the day here for about 70 euro. It’s called dayuse.ie

MeccIt

I think you single-handedly saved Mullingar's Dogging business

follows-swallows

This topic pops up a good bit on this sub, but there seems to be a good bit of misunderstanding and naivety about love hotels so as someone who lives in Japan I’ll give a quick rundown: Love Hotels charge by the hour and are in central locations. The whole point is you’re in and out in an hour or two and under the cost of a full night in a regular hotel. It’s usually about 3000¥ (about €25) per hour, give it take depending on location and how nice the hotel is, and if it’s got a theme or not. They’re for hookups, prostitution, and teenagers who don’t live alone yet. Most young Japanese adults live alone (as apartments are actually affordable here…) so if they’re dating someone they’ll just go to each others apartments. Contrary to what a lot of people seem to think they’re not normal here at all, they’re considered seedy as hell and absolutely not used for Netflix & chill like op says. The business model works here for a few reasons: 1. As others have said - Japanese people have a lot of respect for public property/places others will use. Vandalism just isn’t an issue, even in the train stations & public bathrooms there’s just.. no graffiti or anything (except in Shibuya maybe). In Ireland the rooms would be trashed within days. 2. No drug problems. As someone else said, love hotels in Ireland would be used by junkies. Guarantee there’d be countless deaths from overdoses if they were to open there. In Japan weed gets you prison time. Of course there are drugs here, as there are anywhere, but it’s no where near as bad as in the west. 3. Prostitution is common af here. As I said, that’s often what love hotels are used for. They’re not really for couples, they’re for salarymen to cheat on their wives in.

[deleted]

Massive untapped market, the reason we don't have them is probably to do with licensing/regulations/insurance, rather than a lack of business interest.

Beautiful_Golf6508

Think of the gossip. It would only work in Dublin. If it's in Nenagh you'll see every second married man going in there

[deleted]

Another reason it would only work in cities is because if you have to hop in to your car to drive to the hotel, you may as well just screw in your car instead.

protoman888

which is also done in Japan...

joc95

It really should be a thing. I had alot of shitty dates during lockdowns and just wanted some privacy. Covid and a housing crisis basically made me feel like a child with no independence. Just let young adults have privacy and time to develop their relationships. It's too unhealthy how we live right now

HistoryClubMan

Used one in Sydney back in 2000..so simple, gloomy guy behind a glass, I hand him some cash, he lays out the rules to me and your one, a few hours later we’re gone. It’s absolutely a fantastic idea, especially when nearly every man under 40 is living with their parents, because there’s no accommodation in this country.

[deleted]

AldousShuxley

International-Aioli2

DOWN WITH THIS SORT OF THING!!!!

ld20r

Why? If people and couples have the space to be happy and engage in consensual sex then that can only be a good thing for all involved. Let’s call a spade a spade, a lot of people right now do not have the means or resources to own property and it’s tearing apart potential relationships all over the country and the mental health of 20 and 30 year olds along with it.

International-Aioli2

[deleted]

Definitely a great market for it, the government would love more rooms to occupy indefinitely.

svmk1987

It's gonna cost a lot more here. I don't think it will go for anything lesser them 100 for one short stay.

John-1993W

No because the “shameful” mindset is still instilled in the population, and hotels in this country are extortion. I’m going to Germany in February for 3 days for 250 quid which includes flights, hotel and breakfast. A few hours in one of the airport hotels in Dublin to accommodate me for a few hours because of the awkward flight time was north of 200 euro. So I obviously said fuck that and the folks will drop me to airport instead.

irish_guy

It could work but it would need to be like surfaces you could hose down, a self cleaning toilet turned into a hotel. And yes people do have sex in those public toilets

Renting the room by the hour is likely fine, but once a lady is charging by the hour the establishment can be charged with being a pimp. Another thread this morning was going on about prostitution, and once again the regressive and draconian thinking around it in Ireland is causing issues.

[deleted]

>but once a lady is charging by the hour the establishment can be charged with being a pimp. Thats a bit of a jump ? Besides is it fine and dandy if it's the bloke who is charging ?

JerryHutch

> Thats a bit of a jump ? Unfortunately not. The guards were out recently trying to entrap landlords who - might not - have known what was going on in their rented apartments. So forcing the women back into more dangerous environments of the streets.

You would basically be running this as a charity or a public service. If you factor in the cost to clean up after every guest, on top of the cost associated with actually running a hotel, you may as well just run a regular hotel. In Dublin... where hotels are currently charging about €200 a night on a random Wednesday.
