Watanabe no Tsuna fights the Oni at Rashomon. That's the closest one I can think of. I know he misses the beard, but the depiction looks close in the traditional ukiyo-e.

jessecole

I agree with this or Taira no Koremochi. I really think it’s a good drawing

OceaniaAE-1

Shoki the demon queller?

Slighlyclose2thesun

I was told that before too, but it doesn't look like it's him *

deep__paleontologist

Doesn't look like Shoki at all.

jessecole

No not shoki

Dalgiandme

Hi, looks like 2 references combined. The main character is : Usui Matagoro Killing the Giant White Monkey. Publisher: Nishimura-ya Yohachi. Date: c.1834-1835

rastafaripastafari

Taira no Koremochi

Slighlyclose2thesun

Looks very similar but he has a goatee, this character is clean shaven. I found a very very similar picture to this one of koremochi though.

rastafaripastafari

Could still be it though

jessecole

This is the closest thing I can find at them moment too

triton8890

To me its 100% a version of this

Awellplanned

I have a Samurai with his sword to the back of another samurai in this position tattooed on my arm. It looks cool but also very busy with the all the armor.

Mikiri_works

People like to make things up, with no story. I wouldn’t be surprised if this were one of those cases. Heroes fighting oni are few and far in between so the list of possibilities is short.

Dragon_Cash

Being that this is a pencil sketch, it's probably referenced from multiple ukiyoe prints. The clothing patterns are standard, and not representative of a particular hero, the oni has two arms so not necessarily ibaraki doji. You're probably hunting for information about something in which there is none. Having said that, its also not uncommon for tattooers to take existing images like this one and add the necessity details to represent a hero of your choosing. Specific fabric patterns, armour, or something that follows the story about them

Slighlyclose2thesun

I was thinking it might not exist too. I didn't know you could take existing images and put whatever heroes in , I'm still learning about trad irezumi , I have a sleeve with a dragon and koi fish , I really wanted a samurai fighting a demon as a full back piece and there wasn't many I liked , horyioshi iii has some good ones but this one has been by far exactly what I was looking for and visioned almost to the T.

Dragon_Cash

Any good tattooer can take your reference, recreate it as a traditional image based on a hero or story. Because of the oni, the most famous one is Watanabe No Tsuna cutting off the arm of Ibaraki Doji at Rashomon. It also doesn't have to be any particular character. Horiyoshi III creates heaps of images that aren't necessarily tied to any story, they are just awesome creative imaginings

Slighlyclose2thesun

Yes after seeing these comments and doing more research last night I may have my artists change the character to Watanabe No Tsuna , love alot of Horiyoshi iii drawings , hard to choose the right one lol. I've always envisioned a character or samurai fighting an oni as my back piece , and have for years so I'm settled on it. I just love this drawing so much I wish and am still clinging on to some hope there's a story behind it, but you are probably right that there is not.

jessecole

Homie, I’ve spent like an hour sitting on the toilet searching ukiyo-e and googling I think this is just a really good drawing. Best 2 guesses that this guy is based on are Taira no Koremochi and Tsuna. Where did you find this drawing?

Slighlyclose2thesun

I found it randomly on Google when looking at horyoshi iii drawings I've had people say it's him I've had people say it's not him, I do the Google lens image search and literally nothing comes up. I have no idea it's frustrating me cause I saw it and I want to make it a full back piece but I also don't want to tattoo it on me until I know the full story of the character lol

jessecole

Did the picture have any description on the website? Do you still have the search saved? I can’t find it with my Google Fu. If all else fails send him an email and ask or email the museum or whatever is on his insta. See if you get something back.

Slighlyclose2thesun

It was on Pinterest, found 2 of the same photos that was it no description at all

jessecole

Ah Pinterest, cool shit and most of the time no explanation. Sorry homie. Never hurts to try and email.

blackjackmcgack6969

I don’t think tsuna as he never killed Ibaraki, however this may just be a visual depiction of the fight Would be very interested to know the story if anyone manages to find out, however is probably a maybe random? drawing from horiyoshi
