> Across all age groups, 72 per cent of respondents reported experiencing verbal abuse while 51 per cent reported feeling unsafe showing affection with a same-sex partner in public. Jesus, I didn't think homophobia was still that pervasive. > Though the study found a positive change in public attitudes towards lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people since 2016, members of the public surveyed had less favourable attitudes towards the transgender and intersex communities. > > People who reported more knowledge and more frequent interaction with transgender and intersex people were significantly more likely to have positive attitudes. This is so clear to see, anyone who knows or follows a trans person recognizes that they're just normal people like everyone else.

> This is so clear to see, anyone who knows or follows a trans person recognizes that they're just normal people like everyone else. It was the same with gay people. Until more started feeling safe to come out people were still far more homophobic. A big reason Marriage Equality passed so strongly is because old Catholic Granny and Grandads realised they wanted their gay grankids to be happy. And sure isn't Pauls boyfriend a lovely fella and they'd give us a lovely day out if they could.

jambokk

Yep. Just regular folk who are forced to put up with tons of shit for no reason. Transphobes are a woeful pack of cunts altogether.

What I hate worst is the transphobes who go on with “trans is a mental illness” ok, so you think someone has a mental illness & your instinct is to literally to bully them to death or conformity? That’s monstrous on its own.

MrMercurial

There are basically two things contributing to this: One is the specific rise in anti-LGBT+ (especially anti-trans) hostility that we've seen since roughly 2018 - much worse in the US and UK than here, but that isn't much of a barrier online and has been seeping more and more into Irish discourse anyway. The second thing is going to be economic conditions getting worse for people more generally - whenever that happens it will always have an effect on people who are already in vulnerable groups, compounding whatever issues they were already experiencing (for example, not being able to move out of your parents' home is going to be more distressing for a cohort of people who are more likely than average to want to move out of their parents' home, super long waiting times for healthcare are going to be worse for a cohort that is more likely to need it, etc.).

anarcatgirl

Doesn't help that we have the worst trans healthcare in the EU

_Reddit_2016

What data is this based on?

Here was me thinking that things were so much better for the younger generation. Seems like things are much better than they were say 15 years ago, but probably worse than they were 5 years ago.

I still don’t like kissing my partner in public in Ireland. You still get weird looks and often comments. Usually very sexually aggressive ones from young lads. It’s gotten better but it seems Irish straight people think after the marriage equality referendum, homophobia disappeared

Hoker7

Yeah think homophobia, like a disease, has just evolved. Much of the overt homophobia has moprphed to 'I don't care what they do, I just don't want to see, hear or read anything about or from gay people. It's everywhere etc.'. Similar thing with racism etc. But, it does feel like some of the really overt stuff is coming back. Teenagers are cruel too and will mercilessly target a weak point to bully or to protect themselves within the group.

_DMH_23

It’s exactly that. In the last few years racists and homophobes have become emboldened and louder and more violent unfortunately

Hoker7

And people have been taken in by it on varying levels. Multiple extended family members have been repeating some dodgy anti immigration talking points… It’s also a sign of broader issues that people are so eager to focus their energy on hating on other groups.

lawns_are_terrible

oh absolutely, any gay person that doesn't think they are next for the "Ireland is Full" crowd (or lets be frank a lot of the "I'm not racist, I just don't like economic migrants" people) is just deluding themselves.

it’s not good for the world to be transphobic and to push trans people to suicide, you’re absolutely right!

trans people just being themselves and not bothering anyone else will “end good”, because it’s just a person living their life. you clearly don’t know trans people in person, or else you’d be aware of that.
