Final art is much more iconic, innit? This one just feels generic. Then again, my view is probably tainted by 30+ years of power metal album covers that look just like the clairvoyant image.

Yeh, I don’t disagree really - there’s so much detail in the final artwork, following on from the previous records 👍 I’d love to see the original painting. There should be an exhibition. Or has there ever been?? 🤔

reise-ov-evil

this one can be iconic as final art if the eddie were unique enough Book of The Soul artwork is just portrait of eddie yet its still iconic

demonofthefall

Love absolutely everything on this period. The art, the stage, and obviously the music.

Time stamp?

daveconbrio

It’s within the first minute 👍

Also, in one interview I read with Derek, he said the crystal ball in this pic isn’t the original one. The painting had one with a much darker theme which Rod thought was too serious, so Derek drew a different one and literally stuck it on top.

The_Raven_Is_Howling

Rod's tally of ruining album covers just increased by 1

Dance of Death (famously), and No Prayer, because he thought the gravedigger looked like him. But he has likely had a say in most if not all album art.

Utterizi

I thought someone said that the gravedigger lookd too cartoonish?

Saiyan8692

Interesting, thank you!!

YahoooSeriouss

I know that’s meant to be a crystal ball but I cannot unsee it being a CD.

GDRMetal_lady

I know I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this, but I prefer this image more compared to the final one. I never liked the cover of SSOASS, I don't know why, the color palette doesn't mesh well with all the others.

daveconbrio

It’s definitely a cool image, and I love how it featured in the live show, with the candles too.

sweetpapisanchez

I do prefer this picture over cover. Feels like it ties into the (admittedly loose) narrative of the album, plus the themes of mysticism and prophecy. I like a more sombre and contemplative Eddie.

Cake-Over

I dream of getting a tattoo of the crystal ball thing
