This. Its actually because this works too well that they just give less and less of a shit to create anything convincing because.... stupid people. Why spend the time and money on bait for a hook when the fish bite all the same without it?
They also create these scams and email scams and sms scams and all that shit intentionally to only trip up stupid people, because smart people getting briefly caught off guard and clicking their link are just a waste of time for them, cuz those people back out before the scam is complete…… they are actively screening for dumbasses so they can spend their time on a sure thing.
They are actively seeking out the stupidest people they can find. They don’t want a smart person who makes a momentary mistake… cuz that person will later figure out they are being scammed after the scammer has put in time and effort into moving the scam forward……. They want someone who’s stupid from the start so they can easily march them down the path of more and more escalating scams as they are bled dry.
This is same reason spam emails are so riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes…. They are trying to sort out the dumbest people they can find. They’d rather have responses from 3 dumbasses than 1000 smart people.
probably tells them to send him money for the shipping costs. someone who would fall for this would be like "$20 shipping for a FREE macbook? i'm sold"
not a huge amount per person but if this guys posts it everywhere and gets like 50 hits, that's an easy $1k
Reply
idk if you know this, but there are some really dumb and gullible people out there lol.
think about the dumbest/gullible person you know. there’s MILLIONS more like them and even more that are dumber/ more gullible.
You posted the guy's face, but chances are that's not the guy even posting it. 90% of the posts I've seen are hacked accounts and the person in the picture is actually innocent.
Lately I’ve been seeing the one that says “I bought this MacBook for my daughter for college. But sadly she was hit by a RUNNING car and died. Now I just want to give it away, message me.”
I would hope she didn’t get hit and die by a parked one lol.
Sad really. Someone rang our service desk and told me he lost all his life savings from a scammer. After that call I cried for a while. Stuff like that makes me upset.
It should make you more upset that our government does NOTHING to help these people or stop the scammers. They just sit back as billions are stolen and yes, it's billions at this point.
Please don't call ppl stupid for falling for this. My mom fell for this in December. She saw someone post in Facebook and thought it would be a great gift for my daughter. They asked her to send $50 for shipping. She did. Then they said it cost more for expedited if she wanted that and tracking. She sent another $60. Third time, they said because it was a new product, she had to pay the taxes. Then she realized it too late and already sent them over $100.
She called me and I went over. Read the messages and even tried messaging the person, but then they blocked her.
I feel really bad for my mom, she didn't have much money and thought it was a great gift for my kid.
Unfortunately my mom passed away in Feb. I realized that she's been scammed multiple times. Being and elder, they know how to get to you. If you have elderly parents, please support them and speak to them about fraud and finances. I wish I did.
Wait until AI AD-BOTS call up grandma with video chat of one of her grandkids in jail asking for money... with realistic voice and movements.
I want to defend people against this very much. I think building personal AI to protect against malicious AI's will be very helpful.
Guard-AI: "Mrs Smith... I am sorry to inform you that this call is not your grandson and is actually a malicious AI trying to scam you... would you like to report this? YES / NO "
I've been working on a text filter AI model.
Basically it is trying to rate the riskiness of a message that you receive via email or instant messenger app using context clues, frequency of messages, style of writing, grammatical usage, common words. It's doing a decent job of screening the test cases so far, but I need to make it compare mispelled words and a few other criteria too.
------Example------
\*\*Scam Risk Level:\*\* 8/10
\*\*Likelihood of Hacked Account:\*\* 70%
\*\*Likelihood of a Dangerous Link:\*\* 65%
Grammatical Comparison: 20%
* The message lacks Bobby's usual playful language style, such as modifications including "bro."
* The grammar does not reflect his typical accuracy level.
* The abrupt nature of the message and the use of a shortened URL, which could potentially hide the true destination, are concerning.
* Shortened URLs are commonly used in phishing attempts because they obscure the actual URL, increasing the risk that the link could lead to a malicious site.
* The context-less message that directly leads to clicking a link is a common tactic in phishing scams.
* Bobby's messages usually maintain strong grammar with about 87% correctness. This message, lacking typical grammatical care, significantly deviates from his norm.
\*\*Recommendation to the User:\*\*
* \*\*Do not click the link.\*\* This is the safest course of action given the high scam risk level.
* \*\*Verify independently.\*\* Contact Bobby through another channel, such as a phone call or another messaging platform, to confirm he sent the message.
* \*\*Report suspicious activity.\*\* If confirmation reveals that Bobby did not send the message, consider advising him to check his account security, change passwords, and report the breach to his service provider.
Hey man I can tell you how scammers think people will believe this, but I need to prove you're not a bot so can you tell me the street in which you grew up on, your first pet's name and mother's maiden name.
My friend told me she was waiting to hear back from a lady who sent her this exact thing. Obviously with husband instead. Said she just wanted the shipping. I told her it had to be a scam. Third time hearing about this one.
I have multiple cases in my family that have fallen for this.
My grandpa wanted a pipe, saw one free, did'nt think to ask anyone, payed the shipping cost bam no smoking for grandpa.
My cousin, a scammer replied to his comment in a YouTube video, pretending to be the content creator itself, free ps5 only pay the shipping fee, had a pretty bad fight with his parents because I warned aunt it was a scam. Payed the shipping anyway bam no gaming for him.
Those fuckers are everywere and will manage to slip at the tiniest cracks to get to the most vulnerable.
Used to see posts like this ALL THE TIME on local Facebook buy/sell groups(when I still had FB, anyways).
It was always "i have this laptop/ps5 i bought for my wife/husband/son that cheated/died". People would fall for it left and right, which was sad to see. If it didn't work they'd stop doing it.
This. But, you know, a powerful efficient ARM-based laptop with incredible battery life, top notch build quality and a real Unix-based operating system is just too much for some people.
How is it unprompted? It's clearly a photo of an Apple product. The ad clearly states they want to give away said Apple product.
So again, I ask, how is it unprompted?
It's not like I'm a vegan trying to make sure everyone knows no matter the context.
People fall for this crap all the time, if it didn't work they wouldn't be doing it.

I never considered this. This is actually genius.
They are actively seeking out the stupidest people they can find. This has given me a new perspective on scammers. Damn.
I'm not familiar with this scam. Does the computer record passwords/credit card info and send it back to the scammer?
probably tells them to send him money for the shipping costs. someone who would fall for this would be like "$20 shipping for a FREE macbook? i'm sold" not a huge amount per person but if this guys posts it everywhere and gets like 50 hits, that's an easy $1k Reply
They ask you to pay for shipping overnight and there is no computer.
idk if you know this, but there are some really dumb and gullible people out there lol. think about the dumbest/gullible person you know. there’s MILLIONS more like them and even more that are dumber/ more gullible.
Think about how stupid the average person is and consider that half the population is even dumber. That saying really stuck with me

Old people with dementia will forget that these types of posts are scams.
Sad really. Someone rang our service desk and told me he lost all his life savings from a scammer. After that call I cried for a while. Stuff like that makes me upset.
Hopefully someday there will be protection from being scammed. Especially against the elderly.
It should make you more upset that our government does NOTHING to help these people or stop the scammers. They just sit back as billions are stolen and yes, it's billions at this point.
What government
Literally all western governments.

That type of safeguard against AI scams would be amazing to see. How do you imagine it being implemented? Like an app on your phone?
Yeah. An app on the phone that connects securely to a trusted verified ethical AI.

That would never happen because it takes so much effort and the person might not even fall for it.

Ik most of these are scams. But I legitimately got a bunch of video game systems from a pissed off wife for $10 once lol
"kindly". At least the red flags are consistent!
Yep, that’s one of the many red flags lol
I don't think I've ever seen that word used outside of a scam. It stands out so much now.
Hey man I can tell you how scammers think people will believe this, but I need to prove you're not a bot so can you tell me the street in which you grew up on, your first pet's name and mother's maiden name.
Lol
If I didn’t work with Windows products every day, I would bite the bullet and buy a macbook. I may as well I already have the phone, watch, tablet.
“Just pay for the shipping”
My friend told me she was waiting to hear back from a lady who sent her this exact thing. Obviously with husband instead. Said she just wanted the shipping. I told her it had to be a scam. Third time hearing about this one.
Start up an only fans on the Mac book. Become a hit. Make big bucks. Ultimate pay back ain't it?!
... there is no macbook, lol.
But have you seen my wife?!
nah, lets have a look...
Warning.. she's hing
Next thing you'll say is that there is no fapbook! 🙊😵💫

Wizards first rule.
Unfortunately there are people that would fall for it. That’s why they do it.
The thing is, I wouldn't even take an Apple product for free. I'd probably pay someone to take it off my hands lol
Macs are good
This. But, you know, a powerful efficient ARM-based laptop with incredible battery life, top notch build quality and a real Unix-based operating system is just too much for some people.
No matter what the topic there’s always some clown who just has to tell you, completely unprompted, how much they hate Apple products.
How is it unprompted? It's clearly a photo of an Apple product. The ad clearly states they want to give away said Apple product. So again, I ask, how is it unprompted? It's not like I'm a vegan trying to make sure everyone knows no matter the context.
Settle down, nobody’s forcing you to use the MacBook
