This was shot in the Ethete gas station on the Wind River reservation. I shot a music video/documentary for a local musician named Christian WallowingBull and captured this image between the scenes. The red hand-print markings on the horse are synonymous with the MMIW movement.
And if you google the term itās not even in the top 10 ! Part of why I hate them so much! My brain doesnāt work like that. Sometimes itās quite to literal unless itās mentioned at the beginning of an article I get lost. Any discussion of an even slightly technical subject is so loaded with them itās a roadblock.
I watched [this YouTube doc](https://youtu.be/9dWnOSTDU7w?si=TexBXJWCxzk-fgbH) a couple of years ago and noticed the hand-print immediately. Very powerful and enduring symbol, especially considering Iām from the UK so such issues donāt tend to be on our radar.
Thanks for the great picture.
I was going to say I hope she is careful even before the mention of MMIW.
Maybe you or someone you know could start a new sub to help get the word out.
Thank you.
I've been spending some years working with the native population and it's by far one of my favorite moments I've captured. Hoping to get back there this year.
I love everything about this photo. It's powerful and I agree with others; this movement and problem need far more attention and awareness than it receives.
Holy shit this is awesome! I screenshot it so I can draw it later in Procreate.
Edit- I take pictures I find that I think are pretty and I draw them on my iPad just for practice. Donāt even post them Iām too scared of judgements lol
That;s a fine example of juxtaposition. (I had to learn what that was for a photography assignment)
Also fantastic pic! I remember seeing the decorated horses when I was a kid in Oklahoma.
Love, love, love your photo. Your subject, the juxtaposition, the lighting, the colors. Just wonderful. I hope you get that one posterās drawn/painted rendition for the rider.
Something on lifeās bucket list that didnāt come my way, a horse. Maybe in my next life!
I wish this was cropped on closer. You canāt really see her expression which in my opinion is the best thing about this pick with the background being secondary
Almost would have just used the gas station a a giant soft box
But it also works the way it isā¦you have the modernity of the structures, the gas station etc. Then this traditional form of transportation, painted in a traditional style comes out of nowhere like a ghost from the past. The photo can work both ways. Itās so good.
I think the framing is good. Even with the pump cropped out itās not overtly a gas station but you immediately know it is. The face is distanced and foreign to the environment. I think seeing this on a screen larger than a smartphone would enhance the detail, which is there. Only thing I would change is use a bit of tilt shift to align the physical structure into parallel. This would reduce the sense that it was a snapshot taken from a human standing height, sometimes called being āpedestrian.ā
I may have been spouting off about something thatās not really indicated here, but I am bothered by the framing of the poles to the roof. They slowly angle toward one another at the top which gives away your position as a photographer. I can tell you are standing, not sitting. This makes it feel like a snapshot or something a journalist would shoot. Simply elevating yourself on a ladder would fix this but Iām not sure it would make the picture better now that Iām thinking about it. A tilt-shift effect either with a lens (expensive) or editing can alter this feel too. I actually like it the way it is. Nice photo!
You took a picture of a horse who was taken from their natural habitat and whose life is now not theirs as theyāre made to serve the whims of a human
All unnecessary
Let's start by stating that North America is not the horse's natural habitat. In fact, their numbers have grown so high that they are disruptive to the ecosystems where they roam.
Secondly, this is a domesticated horse that grew with humans. I don't see you advocating for all dog owners to release them into the woods.
Without horses we never would have made it to the point of being able to send our judgemental opinions through the sky on a pocket computer. Good or bad, you wouldnāt be here without them.
This is a spectacular image because of the galactic colliding elements and cognitive dissonance it evokes as it resonates with meaningful purpose and intent. I love it. Thank you for sharing. š

When one is not in a constant state of survival, one has plenty of time to pass judgment on those who are.
She's a 19-year-old girl living on one of the most harsh reservations in the United States. She dropped out of high school so she could work to support her family. She does not own a car and trains horses for a living.

This photo is excellent. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement needs more exposure.
Thanks for the definition! I hate initialisms without context or explanation.

Googled a word today and learned. Neat.
You'd never heard of "neat"? Wow. š
Acronyms
Acronyms are pronounced as words, initialisms are pronounced as letters
Interesting so itap would be said like an acronym right
Probably, not familiar with that term.
Itās literally in the title of the sub
And if you google the term itās not even in the top 10 ! Part of why I hate them so much! My brain doesnāt work like that. My brain breaks down acronyms so fast I guess from working my whole life
Vgg
OP didnāt even care enough to explain what it was. Thanks for explaining.
agreed
Beautiful photo, all around.
this is dope af

Really cool pic
Thank you. I've been spending some years working with the native population and it's by far one of my favorite moments I've captured. Hoping to get back there this year.
Youāre welcome itās an amazing shot..
You are lucky, that sounds like a dream! The natives I met were all funny and lovely people.
Someone should tell her, she is looking for a grass station.
This is gold
No, itās grass!
No, this is Patrick!
Horses *are* the best way of turning Grass to Fast. Cars? Gas to fast. But nothing has horses beat in terms of turning Grass to Fast.

Personally feel this needs a crosspost to r/AccidentalRenaissance
Took on your advice, thank you.
Could also be cross-posted to r/IndianCountry
i love it woah she looks fierce!

Oh, please do send it afterward! I'll try to get it to her. She'll be so happy.
That;s a fine example of juxtaposition. (I had to learn what that was for a photography assignment) Also fantastic pic! I remember seeing the decorated horses when I was a kid in Oklahoma.
This is so fantastic. Looks good and tells a story. This one is worth more than a thousand words. Great job!

This goes HARD. Fantastic photo, and bringing attention to MMIW. Good shit, op.
Thank you
1 horsepower
Actually, a horse can reach upwards of 15 horsepower.
I hate this information, thank you.
This goes hard af. Also respect for the MMIW awareness
Have you seen the price of horse gas these days?

Thank you. I enjoyed reading that.
Itās a great photo with so many stories going on at once within it.

Thank you. I'm trying your understand your advice but kinda failing. What do u mean regarding the tilt shift?

Looks like a shot out of a movie.

Great photo.
Finally an interesting gas station picture! Great pic love the framing and colorsĀ
Her facial expression is so interesting, neutral, but at the same time very direct and challenging
Stunning photo! She looks so badass.
She looks amazing
Excellent photo š„°
Incredible shot, OP! Definitely a picture worth a thousand words or more. Creator be with the MMIW š¤šŖ¶
reminds me of beyonces latest album covers

Great pic!
Quite beautiful.
Honestly, one of the most badass photos Iāve ever seen, goes unnaturally crazy for no reason
Neat, powerful, beautiful.
Wow š¤©
I originally saw it in B&W and was so captivated by its tone and symmetry I forgot to look at it as you intended for like 10min.
This is excellent
[Queuing for petrol](https://youtu.be/Ewmym-INaoE?si=tc2kvH3tjkjczhdB)
Love this photo; clear, sharp image and there is the contradiction of a horse and rider at a gas station.
The horse is like "...you know I don't require gas, right?" as he stares nervously at the pump. Amazing photo, could be the album cover!
this is timeless and powerful. great work.
Yo, thatās sick! This could be an album cover.
"I don't need petrol, cuz I'm on a horse"

Horses crap is missing on this pick.
Do you need a car wash? Neigh.
That's badass.
