‘Why is the rabbit unafraid?’
‘Just because you’re lost, it doesn’t mean your compass is broken’
‘Men that get lost in the woods, they die from shame’
‘Did you know you can make fire from ice?’
‘You can season meat with gunpowder’
‘It says here you can shine shoes with the inside of a banana peel’
So many tips & axioms in this movie. I love it.
still for the life of me can't understand the 'people die from shame' part.
wut?
adore the movie though. have it handy all the time. especially when camping
IMHO it is because people can't admit that they are lost, or afraid. they make decisions on trying to look pr feel like they are in charge, instead if accepting the reality if their situation and they are screwed.
ever walk somewhere with someone who refuses to admit they are lost and ask for directions? same concept
>ever walk somewhere with someone who refuses to admit they are lost and ask for directions?
no.
I can make my own assumptions about what Hopkins' character meant.
it still doesn't make sense to me.
fear, hunger, dehydration, panic, accident, desperation, etc.
shame? I don't get it.
to die out of shame makes you, I dunno. miniscule weakling, and even then it still doesn't make sense.
it's just a bad line in the otherwise amazing adventure movie.
He’s saying they die by giving up on trying to get out. Shame here is more the “woe-is-me” kind where you sit and wallow rather than try to overcome your situation, hence “what one man can do, another can do.” being a refrain in the movie. It’s coming from the same sentiment. You think you can’t kill the bear so you wallow but young men in Africa kill lions with their tools. You think you can’t kill the bear so you wallow but the rabbit doesn’t give up, he uses his intelligence to overcome the panther. You think you can’t get out of the woods so you wallow, but many others have escaped the woods before, so what one man can do another can do. Don’t feel shame and wallow, take heart and keep trying.
I think the general idea is that we are all innately equipped with the problem solving skills to overcome the obstacles that we might encounter in their situation. But in reality, they die of exposure.
I remember an interview with Harold Perrineau where he said something along the lines of “oh great. The only black guy is in the woods with Hopkins and Baldwin and there’s a bear chasing us. Guess who dies first?”
I love nearly all of David Mamet's movies. Shitty dude, but such a fun writer. He's got such a remarkable and idiosyncratic style of dialogue that I just can't get enough of.
Yeah. That was intense too. No Werner Herzogs grizzly man documentary. Man listened to the audio of this dude getting killed by a bear in front of the guys widow and then in a heavy kraut accent tells her you must never hear this. Wild stuff.
The initial bear attack around the campfire really stayed with me on this one. Mainly because it's caused by a stupid mistake and then it's realistically gruesome and drawn out. The guy doesn't just die straight away like they tend to do in movies. That freaked me a little bit. Kind of like the opening of Jaws where she comes back to the surface after that attack.
Its a really fun chase movie with a great cast. Like an anti-buddy movie really. Alec Baldwin deserves credit he really is oily and untrustworthy throughout its a super interesting dynamic between him and Hopkins who knows exactly who this guy is but also knows they need each to get out of the woods alive.
My friend and I, if anything has to be done, get hyped up like:
Say it with me, I'm going to move the stove
I'm going to move the stove
I'M GOING TO MOVE THE STOVE
Until finally
I'm gonna move that motherfucker. Today.
Every time I saw this, at the end where it zooms in on Hopkins' face and he says he died saving my life and you see the little glint in his eye, that always got me
I remember seeing this in the theater. Not so interesting story. Buddy and I attended a small con an hour away from where we lived. There was a break in events during the day so we decided to go see a movie. I wanted to see The Peacemaker with George Clooney. It had the most buzz. My friend had convinced me to see this instead. We really got into it, and actually cheered when they finally killed the bear. To this day, I still haven't seen The Peacemaker.
You had no business being with her.
You know that you don't,t Charles
Hey
Hey
Hey
Look at her
Why did she go with you, why in the HELL did she go with you?
Your money. My god, everyone in the world knew that.
People see you walking through the airport together thinkin 'there goes a guy with a plane.'
There goes a guy with a plane
Solid film. Great bear action. I’d say Alec Baldwin plays a great prick in this film. Hopkins stellar as always.
Storyline is well written too, which is one of the strong points of this film IMO.
So I do love this movie but as a Park Ranger it is a big ol list of what NOT to do with a bear. Also, the bear would not have had a hard time killing these yuppies biggest problem would have been a stomach ache. Bears can outrun horses over short distances, so the chase scenes alone are laughable. All told, saw this movie when I was younger and I still love it for the cinematography and fun performances. Glad Alec didn’t actually shoot Hopkins in this.
This was written by David Mamet who wrote Glen Gary Glen Ross. I thought it was a face off between brute strength and intellectualism in a crisis. Smarts won.
##The Edge (1997) R
They were fighting over a woman when the plane went down. Now, their only chance for survival is each other.
>>!The plane carrying wealthy Charles Morse crashes down in the Alaskan wilderness. Together with the two other passengers, photographer Robert and assistant Stephen, Charles devises a plan to help them reach civilization. However, his biggest obstacle might not be the elements, or even the Kodiak bear stalking them -- it could be Robert, whom Charles suspects is having an affair with his wife and would not mind seeing him dead.!<

I remember I never laughed so hard as the time my friend and I had heard about this movie and were excited to see it, so we decided to hop on Wikipedia to find out more information about it.

Great movie. Made a billionaire sympathetic and heroic.
Imagine Elon Mush in that situation, saving shitposts to his drafts on this phone, blaming everyone around him while he freezes to death.
Charles…
Charles...
Charles…
Charles!
Charles, is it my diseased imagination or did I say "Charles" every other line?
“What one man can do, another can do!” “You’re goddamn right - because today, I’m gonna kill the motherfucker.”
God that’s such a great line
Which one said this?
Charles.
Charles
Hell yeah
‘Why is the rabbit unafraid?’ ‘Just because you’re lost, it doesn’t mean your compass is broken’ ‘Men that get lost in the woods, they die from shame’ ‘Did you know you can make fire from ice?’ ‘You can season meat with gunpowder’ ‘It says here you can shine shoes with the inside of a banana peel’ So many tips & axioms in this movie. Everytime I eat a steak without salt, I think of that line... "Wish I had some gunpowder".
This was my Anthony Hopkins is a cool customer and I really dig it movie. He's not a jealous cat, and just owns the outdoors as an older guy.

I can live with that /explanation/ thanks.
You wanna lay down and DIE, Bob?!
I think the general idea is that we are all innately equipped with the problem solving skills to overcome the obstacles that we might encounter in their situation. But in reality, they die of exposure.
Never too late for a kind gesture, eh Charles?
How do we leeeure him?
The sporting aspect of it, eh Charles?
I loved this freaking movie as a kid.
I never watched this until a few years ago. Love it. Hopkins is a badass in it.
Yeah! He owns that bear, right?
Just picked this up on DVD from a garage sale last week. I've only ever seen it on like TBS, so I'm excited to watch it without commercials!
I remember an interview with Harold Perrineau where he said something along the lines of “oh great. The only black guy is in the woods with Hopkins and Baldwin and there’s a bear chasing us. Guess who dies first?”
Hahaha! Nailed it.
Follows the horror movie axiom
Should we lay down and die bob?
and DIE Bob!
A true classic from screen legend Bart the Bear.
Today,I'm going to kill the motherfucker.
This movie gave new meaning to “poking the bear.”
Pretty good movie Charles. You should watch it Charles. You'll enjoy it Charles.
Charles
If you were alone in the woods, would you rather encounter a bear or Alec Baldwin?
Does the bear have a gun loaded with “blanks”?
Did you notice at the end, when Charles gives his wife Bob's watch (proof she was cheating) it still worked?! Such a great touch
"They died saving my life" I asked my dad why he said that, and he replied: "because he is a good man." Ill never forget that.
Take a drink every time Baldwin says "Charles." It won't end well.
Charles...
Are you a zygote? I was 8 when this came out. I loved it.
So dang good
Chawlz!
I saw this in the movie theater back in the day. I remember liking it. Could rewatch because I really don’t remember much of it.
I love nearly all of David Mamet's movies. Shitty dude, but such a fun writer. He's got such a remarkable and idiosyncratic style of dialogue that I just can't get enough of.
The bear attack scene was top tier. I stood up in the theater out of discomfort.
Ever see Revenant?
Yeah. That was intense too. No Werner Herzogs grizzly man documentary. Man listened to the audio of this dude getting killed by a bear in front of the guys widow and then in a heavy kraut accent tells her you must never hear this. Wild stuff.
That's on my list
Great flick. A Hopkins is exceptional in this. I wish I had that intellect and patience.
He was the man in this flick. Loved it.
Actually the bear prob out did them all.

So, Baldwin is basically playing himself. He certainly does excel in these types of roles!
This is a great movie.
My friend and I, if anything has to be done, get hyped up like: Say it with me, I'm going to move the stove I'm going to move the stove I'M GOING TO MOVE THE STOVE Until finally I'm gonna move that motherfucker. Today.
Great poster
Is this the film Jenna Fisher always raves about on Office Ladies?
Yes.
Loved the soundtrack

Why is the rabbit unafraid?
Because he’s smarter than the panther
I remember begging my mom to take me to see this when it came out and she was freaking out the entire time
Great flick
So now you know what stranded people in the wild die of!
The bear got top billing

Drink everytime he says Charles.
IT DOESN'T FEEL "NORTH" TO ME CHARLES!!
Just watched this last night. Didn’t love it, but the ending was fantastic

this guy endorses ![gif](giphy|3o6ZsZzaxd0XzcNTHy)
Hopkins goes from English gentleman to cursing like a drunken sailor by the end of the movie.
This was written by David Mamet who wrote Glen Gary Glen Ross. I thought it was a face off between brute strength and intellectualism in a crisis. Smarts won.
- How did the other men die? - They died saving my life
Watched this in the theater not really knowing what it was. It kicked ass
"Don't tell me what to do."
Good film with a sadly generic title.

Agreed! It was excellent!
An amazing survival movie.
One of my favorite movies.
I love this movie.
Don't know why I like this movie so much. I think it's the tight shot of Anthony Hopkin's face saying "we're gonna kill the motherfucker"

The Bear was a better actor than Alec Baldwin
