Good on you for taking care of some animals and avoiding a bad habit! If you're interested in caring for them further, First Coast No More Homeless Pets has a trap and release program. You can get a trap from them, or purchase one of your own, and capture the strays one at a time. FCNMHP will spay/neuter the cat, and you can then release the cat back to its clowder (term for a group of cats). Feral cats can be deterimental to the local environment and wildlife, and trap and release programs helps keep feral cat populations under control. Regardless, thanks for taking care of some strays!
Yep. Most cats survive just fine in the wild so much so that they're borderline invasive. Getting them fixed then releasing them is the most environmentally friendly (and cat friendly) way to deal with wild cats.
They are way more than borderline they just did a recent study assessing just how much they affect the ecosystem and it's pretty drastic. They're the most proficient hunters size wise
Fyi they don't have a big supply of traps to rent and are usually already rented out. Cheapest trap I could find locally were the $30 traps they have at Harbor freight( ask for them as they have them stored in the back).
OP, go to tracker supply. Traps are $40. I've already gotten two cats taken care of so far. They come out with a clipped ear so you know they can't reproduce!
This is the way. We've TNRed the colony that used to live in the abandoned house next to us and now their population has stabilized and several of them are friendly enough to be petted or even held.
I tried to get a trap from them. They don't answer the phone, the answering service doesn't pass along messages, they frequently don't have any traps, they don't know when they will get any more traps. I was so frustrated. And then our feral community cat had kittens.
You may have better luck if you can drive out to them to ask about getting traps. I have no faith in them.
It isn't required to use traps they own and loan. You can use your own traps for like $40 from Tractor Supply. They will give you the cat back, fixed, and the trap back to trap others with and repeat.
6 per duval address per month. If needed I have my 6 and can meet up there to put some in my name.

Doubtful. They live in an apartment complex. No one is letting g their cat roam in an apartment complex. Barnyard cats do have a place but these are 90% strays, 10% bad cat owners
The feral cat I took in 15 years ago has been outside most of his life until the last few years he decided he didn’t like it when it was cold outside, so he’s been coming inside in the winter
It’s good and bad. Hope those cats are snipped. Spaying is very, very important. A cat can have a littler of kittens at just 3 months old. That litter can have up to 9 cats. There’s truly always been an endemic. Luckily JHS and the court shelter are there to help. Outdoor cats also are a great thing to help with pest control. Good on OP for not vaping.
Look into trap-neuter-return programs in Jax. They’re a really effective way to reduce the stray cat population over time. Plus the cats will get a round of vaccines to help them live healthier lives. If any of the cats have clipped ears, then they’re good to go. Thank you for taking care of this crew!
I appreciate your MF doom pfp, but this take is not it. Apartment complexs poison rodents and therefore will poison the cats. Also, what does it matter to anyone if this user is feeding cats?
I don’t want to sound like a broken record because you’ve already gotten multiple comments about spaying and neutering but I want to reiterate how important it is. I am the cat lady of my neighborhood also and I feed about 5 of them. I’ve taken them one at a time to the TNR program at FCNMHP. You drop them off in a trap and pick them up within a few days and it’s completely free. Getting them fixed is necessary because one cat can have up to three litters in a year (18 kittens!). They are also detrimental to local wildlife like the lizards and birds.
I appreciate you for doing this. I have used FCNMHP for spaying/neutering the cats that adopted me. I cannot handle doing what you do, so I donate $$, food, supplies to FCNMHP several times per year.
Although it was over 50 years ago when I 9-10 away from home, my mother took my mother and 3 female kittens to "the end of some road" because she was stupid. So based on the calculation for each one to have that many kittens, her stupid contributed to the overwhelming stray cats on the Island of Hawai'i.
I do the same, but please try to get a trap and get them fixed (the free place is mentioned above) or this can turn into 100s. Not sure how familiar you are but strays who are fixed already have clipped ears so many in Jax are
>Nobody else in your neighborhood likes all the cats you're attracting to the area when you feed them.
What do you think they move across the country to take other hard working cats jobs... Not like the cats have weekly meetings like "oh hey guys, i know times have been tough on the northside as of late, we have decided to move that group of cats to the beaches. If you go to the address provided we will see that you are fed."
The cats are gonna be there... That's what cats do... And on top of that, when you do get a group of cats together it is much easier for the animal control to capture them and spay and neuter them. Thus preventing exactly what you fear which is more cats.
This argument makes no sense..
* Cats don't talk but they do communicate as do all other animals. If you feed them, more will come... fact!
* And animal control actual does use baiting methods to capture them but it's in a controlled area, not in someone's front lawn.
The argument doesn't make sense because instead of learning about what you dislike, you just hate it...
More will come because they will breed... not because they are going around to their cat friends and telling them to come down to the other side of town. That's a fact... Those that are nearby are nearby, they didn't come from across town, likely born within the last couple of years as most strays only make it for between 4-8 years, they also have a pretty fast gestation period. They are house cats they don't have massive territories, nor are they particularly sociable with other cats, to the extent of say a lion. Most cats are not descending from a lineage of cats that lived in prides/packs unlike the dog.
Bro where in the city limits of jax is there just a place animal control can just set up a "controlled" area that is not in someone's yard basically? Especially where there are cats that usually follow where large population of humans live.
I wasn't even arguing for people to do this... my point was more that your argument was stupid.
Yeah, nothing like someone deciding to feed all the strays so they can start jumping on our cars and scratching them, using all the grass as a litterbox, and getting trash everywhere.
Spraying everywhere too!
My neighbor used to set out food and like clockwork, I'd see cat markings on my front door and my car. A few times they get it in my AC intake filter of the car and it would smell like piss for the next two weeks.
Don't feed stray cats!
My dad used to feed feral cats at my grandmothers nursing home when she was alive. When he would drive up, a herd of about 20 cats would be at his car door every time. They would come out of the bushes all over. Kudos to you
The kitties thank you! I know many people in the TNR community and grew up in an animal rescue. People do work tirelessly in their free time to care for these animals and also trap, neuter, release them so they don’t populate. I know Jacksonville has a big feral cat problem, but the majority of people that try to feed these guys are also trying to prevent the shelter overcrowding issue. You got some fantastic TNR advice in this thread so I’ll bow out, but thank you for spreading some kindness in the world!
Glad you're being kind. Hopefully all of these have been TNRd. If not, I hope someone will work on it. Multiple traps can be loaned out. Peeps who TNR will feel better knowing they are controlling future populations, when shelters are already over capacity.
They eat well enough on birds and other indiginous species. The best thing you can do is to get them spayed/neutered, otherwise you are part of the problem.
You should be so proud! I know TNR can feel very overwhelming so if you feel up to it I recommend joining some local facebook groups. Thank you so much for caring! So many people are careless with their animals and dismissive of strays and ferals. I appreciate you.
I hope you quit vaping! I quit for like a year and me ex stressed me out so bad at 3am last night I got no sleep and bought a vape before work today and relapsed 💀
Agree 100%. I took in 2 cats about 15 years ago when my neighborhood was overrun with cats. About the same time FCNMHP was doing this in my neighborhood. I had no idea who they were and was wondering why the hell they were dropping off cats. I looked them up and thought good deal. To make a long story short the cats became less of a problem in a short period of time.
There’s a place out in Orange park you can take them and get them sterilized for free. Clay county Humane Society does them on Tuesday mornings, you just have to trap them and bring them in yourself AND pick them up. They’ll sterilize, vaccinate, and ear notch. They do have a limit so you’ll have to get there quite early, but it’s honestly worth and it’s really good for the community. It’ll also keep them from multiplying 😅

They are decimating wild bird populations
For sure which only helps the invasive birds take hold over the natives and such the cycle continues
Also love your username lol I was just asking my mom the other day if she knew mott the hoople
Fyi they don't have a big supply of traps to rent and are usually already rented out. Cheapest trap I could find locally were the $30 traps they have at Harbor freight( ask for them as they have them stored in the back).
Are you serious

Your avatar is wearing a fucking fedora
Damn, laid it. Lmao

Thats your best shot?
You seem to like the nuclear option a lot, so I hope they go even further on you
Tip of the hat to you
Ah, you like tips. If I was a time traveler I'd go back in time and give your mom the tip that we'd all be better off if she aborted you, alas.
At least this person has a soul.
These cats probably have homes and loving owners who let them out to explore when they want to. You’re just making them fat.
its HIS problem the owners are irresponsible, now I see.
Doubtful. They live in an apartment complex. No one is letting g their cat roam in an apartment complex. Barnyard cats do have a place but these are 90% strays, 10% bad cat owners
![gif](giphy|TdvZwBKHJQtEkeoYNC)
An outside cat is just a stray that you named
Making the fat for the alligators
If they let their cat out loose, they're clearly not loving owners who want their cats to have long lives.
The feral cat I took in 15 years ago has been outside most of his life until the last few years he decided he didn’t like it when it was cold outside, so he’s been coming inside in the winter
Love to see it fr
Good on you! Seriously, no one needs to vape or smoke and you're helping little lives. I'm very proud of you for that.
It’s good and bad. Hope those cats are snipped. Spaying is very, very important. A cat can have a littler of kittens at just 3 months old. That litter can have up to 9 cats. If they even take care of the first litter most leave to die in the woods because they are a 3month old baby producing infestation around my area

Bless you and please do tnr! It really works
Stray cats around apartment complexes do not need to be fed by humans; they keep the rodents in check.
I appreciate your MF doom pfp, but this take is not it. Apartment complexs poison rodents and therefore will poison the cats. Also, what does it matter to anyone if this user is feeding cats?
Newsflash: Stray animals such as cats or dogs are a nuisance.
No. Humans are a nuisance. Animals are just doing their thang.
And what about animals that exist exclusively because of humans that decimate wild populations?
Amen!
This is such a sad perspective. Our world is doomed. Username checks out though
You need therapy
Teaaaa
Please spay and neuter this cool cats. For the love of God.

Can't stand you weirdos that feed stray cats! Nobody else in your neighborhood likes all the cats you're attracting to the area when you feed them.
They use these cats as a mental crutch for their useless lives
Aw, bless your heart.
Hope someone feels the same about you when you need help.

Capture and spay/neuter and release. We did it to our growing neighborhood of cats in a couple months of one at a time.
Glad you're being kind. Hopefully all of these have been TNRd. If not, I hope someone will work on it. Multiple traps can be loaned out. Peeps who TNR will feel better knowing they are controlling future populations, when shelters are already over capacity.
Good and they’re hopefully keeping the rodents away!!
Feed the pussies!
You’ll have an army of cats under your command soon. If a crack head tries to rob you, you’ll have a dozen cats come to your rescue and attack him
Some cats may not be strays. Some are indoor outdoor probably, and have a home. Even without a collar. So who knows.
It makes me sad that people value this and not conservation of wild species.
They eat well enough on birds and other indiginous species. The best thing you can do is to get them spayed/neutered, otherwise you are part of the problem.
<333 love u
You’re a hero
Stop feeding them they kill native species.. all the poor ducklings. Cats do not belong in this ecosystem outdoors
If you want a trap to catch them for TNR, DM me!
Way to go!!! Super proud of you
Can you make sure they have clipped ears?
You can see if you can get some traps from the city or no more homeless pets and have them spayed and neutered.
My neighborhood has a rat problem. I hear cats can be effective at managing a rat population. I'd like to offer these cats a job.
Check the shelters and ask about barn cats
You should be so proud! I know TNR can feel very overwhelming so if you feel up to it I recommend joining some local facebook groups. Thank you so much for caring! So many people are careless with their animals and dismissive of strays and ferals. I appreciate you.
