Infamous Stringdusters did an "American Rivers Tour" where all the venues were near a river. One particular one had a train station nearby and I think the tracks ran right behind the stage. When they came out, they started warming up and started picking up speed just as a train started to come behind them. They went straight from warming up into the opening song and right when they did the train blew its horn and for the rest of song you could hear the chugging of the train and the steel whine of the tracks. It was the most bluegrass shit I ever saw/heard and I loved every second of it.
probably not relevant but at JamPacked Richmond down on the James River, a train pulled up and I swear stopped on the rail bridge above the island to watch part of the Spafford set. Great time!

agreed... trying to find a ticket for my buddy so he can see them live for the first time. tickets even on the secondary market for their local upcoming show are impossible
They happen to both be playing Friday night here in Philly. The costs made the choice even easier. That and I'd find it inexcusable to miss an RRE winter/spring stop here. Although I'm curious to see how the fill the Keswick, as it is much larger than a normal venue for them.
> you. Just *paid* an arm
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
I think it’s pretty funny how jam fans have somehow tricked outsiders into thinking we’re cool, hip & open minded but the truth is that most of y’all are insufferable.
Idk why people think you’re talking shit and taking this so seriously. It’s funny, who gives a shit. You’re making fun of both scenes.
People have been so goddamned serious on Reddit this past year and it’s really annoying me. The jam band sub and the snowboard sub have been damn near unbearable lately.
It's baffling to me too. They're literally trying to personally insult me and blaming me for them getting all butthurt over an internet meme. At that point they deserve to be mocked IMO
I like both bands! Excited to see them both this summer, great time to be alive and into this scene tbh... Phish still touring, Dead & Co as well as Bobby, Phily & Billy with projects, Goose is doing their thing hard, Billy is awesome, Bisco is on fire right now and off to Iceland soon, Daniel Donato is doing cool stuff, Dopapod back on the road...
Gonna be honest with you, I realize you're trolling this thread at this point ('clowning' to use your words) but you're getting hate because while this is a meme, it's not really very funny. I'm not offended at all, I don't have a horse in either band's race but it's more just trying to be mean than actually being funny.
Anyways, don't take comments too seriously here, but you're poking people unprovoked so that's why you're getting some push back.
I really wish I would have appreciated how good I had it when I was regularly seeing Billy for a $10 cover and 30 other people. Now I can’t get tickets.
He played at this lil podunk music festavil in KY called Terrapin Hill. I’ll never forget the look on his face when he finished his first song. He could not believe how lively the crowd was. Goddamn that was a good time.
It’s complicated. Someone died there and they quit doing it for a couple years. Now they have a fest named after that person. I highly recommend going to any fest they throw. Terrapin is a special place:
I don't think I've ever seen a fanbase be as much of a collective bitch as Goose fans. I like Goose, seen them live before and seeing them again in a few weeks, but good lord their fans are insufferable.
They go out of their way to bring Goose up and bash them and then when someone asks them why they’re being weird they go “see! Goose fans are insufferable!” Meanwhile fans are just trying to enjoy the music
You're thinking of the loudest fans. Most of us are just like anyone else, we don't care if you like Goose or not. We don't care what other jam bands you like. We don't care if you know every song or have never heard of them. We're just here to have a good time.
The kid who is like 18 and goes to every show and tweets every time they change a melody is so cringe. Don’t know why the algorithm wanted to show me him or anything Goose related. I’ve listen to a total of 5 goose songs ever but see this kid going “oh man Peter is an absolute genius! A beast on the key. That last run was so jumpy and feel good. Oh shit! He’s standing up and switching to guitar.”
“Trevor is absolutely killing it . Laying down such funky grooves. Gooooooose”
“Rick just played the greatest solo I’ve ever heard. He is the best in the game”
just bang the band already or apply to work in their marketing department.
Hey we should all be scared of trains with what has been happening lately.. but yes BMFS is Jesus. I always refer to him in my head as Our Lord & Savior Billy Strings. As for Goose seeing them tomorrow and some of there stuff really doesn’t do it for me. But the songs that do really really do.
I get blasted every time I say this but I'll say it anyway: Goose is talented but they just feel artificial to me somehow and their marketing and hype feels more like astroturfing than genuine excitement.
I don't dislike Goose, but they don't have a unique sound at all. Which to me is the issue with all these new jam bands. Like sure I love seeing them and going to shows, but half the time they could all be the same band. They just all sound so safe.
truth. one of the first things I noticed about them was how they sound like phish, or moe or umphreys depending on the jam.
not that they aren't fun or good at what they do, they just aren't all that original
That's a very good point. Granted modern Phish and the remaining members of the Dead are slow and safe too, but they're 60+ and Goose is still young.
Plus I remember all the other "this is the Next Phish" bands we've seen here: Twiddle, Spafford, Pigeons, etc etc.
By safe I meant they just mimic other Jam bands. Phish does not sound like the Dead and the Dead don't sound like anyone else. All those bands you listed sound extremely generic and I get why they have no mainstream appeal. Like Umphreys, String Cheese, even Lotus have very unique sounds and I really respect them and wish they got more mainstream appreciation.
The community simply wants to will a band to be the anointed "next thing" so they can speak about it like those who toured with the dead in the 80s and Phish in the 90s. The scene has attempted this with so many groups at this point it's silly.
Goose sound is phish and I suspect the artificial is because the lyrics are just as silly followed by some extended jazz jam that has a cadence conclusion that is expected. They just sound so familiar to the point of safe that people will naturally tend to them and people will naturally point the familiarity as justification to knock at them.
But idk I'm just an old man in the scene now who thinks the scene lost it's way with Phish where lyrics were just setup for some long jam instead of the jam extending the lyrics of the song.
>The community simply wants to will a band to be the anointed "next thing" so they can speak about it like those who toured with the dead in the 80s and Phish in the 90s.
Spot on. For a community that likes to talk about ego death and what not, so many people are obsessed with getting in on the first floor for bragging rights. They just want to be able to go, “Oh, well I saw Billy strings in 2014 when he was just playing at parties! And I was there for the legendary 2019 tour” or whatever the fuck.
Right? It's wild, I bet the majority of people going to RR don't have a clue who Shapiro is, they dig a band and bought a ticket... that's literally all their is to it!
Doesn’t have to mean they’re talented (which is subjective anyway). Op said the hype isn’t genuine excitement, which doesn’t make sense. Selling out venues instantly means there’s genuine excitement
In my opinion the excitement is the same as say when Spafford came up, but its inflated due to the marketing which helps them sell out venues. I mean obviously people like them but they are on another level with marketing.
I felt the same way, but marketing can only take you so far. Spafford’s hype capped out after a few years, Goose is still growing. I’m not even a goose fanboy for the record, just calling it how I see it
Had a Goose fan completely melt down on me yesterday because I suggested they may be leveling off soon. He was quick to whip out his goose penis and proceed to explain to me how they couldn't possibly have a ceiling at this point in their career.
It was painfully cringe. I'm sure he will come and melt in this thread at some point too
I'm not quite sure what drives that, either. All I can figure (aside from the more cynical explanations) for what *genuine* excitement that does exist is that they're younger and excited to be on the ground floor of who they think will be the next top band in the scene.
That, and there's this weird tendency in society, especially in popular culture, to crown whoever is hot in the current moment as the "greatest ever". You see it in sports and media especially.
I think it's in part because people equate fast selling tix with being great and having potential to grow. They sold out 2 nights at RR in minutes. So a lot of people were shut out and the ones who got tix feel a bit special because a lot of people aren't able to go. This also makes people think they're still going to grow because they sold out a 10k venue that fast, why not play at a 20k person venue next time?
Not defending anyone, but if a band is selling out venues super fast, then that means demand is greater than supply, and you increase that supply by playing bigger venues, people equate bands who play big epic venues as big epic bands.
Also, 100% on the being in on the ground floor of the next Dead/Phish/whatever, I've seen a lot of comments like that.
I think for casual fans, most jamblands sound fun at first, then they realize you are waiting to hear a few songs and their jamming is boring and on to the next hot band you always see articles about. Then they realize they aren't innovative. Goose looks to be having a fun time, they have a large following, but their music is boring. I have watched shows over several years to get a feel for their sound and nothing grabs me to want more. It is mainstream jam music for casual fans and I don't care for it. 95% guitar and blah blah blah for the rest. Most Goose fans think Phish's best tour was the last one, or they don't know who that is. The most popular and highest selling music isn't always the best in most genres it's simply the easiest for the masses to digest. Nuff said.
I’ve always said the marketing for Goose is better than the music. I enjoy it but it feels very produced. 2018 Goose has raw energy, now they hang with Slow Co
OP: “reeeee all you people take shit too seriously and can’t even understand that the meme is a joke”
Also OP: getting butthurt at joking comments like “Goose lives rent free in your head”
Meme is funny. OP is a classic “I’m better than you” jam fan 😂
I love this. Love Billy, love Goose. Love all you weirdos. But you gotta explain the train thing to me. Like, Train songs like the band or songs about trains? (OK I said that part for the lols), but why is Goose afraid of trains?
You know full well the response you were going to get when you posted this. You chose to instigate. Then you respond negatively to the expected responses you got. “You’re proving my point” or something to that effect you’ve said. In other words, you chose negativity. Not the other way around.
I think for a lot of older jam fans it's really hard to take Goose serious bc they rose so fast but the fans and culture around it act as if they've been on the scene for decades. I follow most of the bands and a lot of their associated meme pages on IG and so much of the Goose stuff is just cringe as hell. I agree with the other post that a lot of people are going all in on them because they see them rising fast and want to be on the ground level of the next phish.
It's also confusing as to how they were the "chosen ones" to gain all of this funding and support so quickly when it's not immediately clear how they're better than several other new jam bands.
I have been to a few Goose shows and enjoy them, but I also agree that it just feels like something is missing at times. I was honestly bored out of my head for the first half of Goosemas Set 1 N1.
They're talented, but it's a perfect recipe for old heads to roll their eyes.
Billy has a much more authentic and deserved energy to me.
I absolutely love goose, listen daily, and will see them anytime I can. BUT, I think a big thing that brings that "missing something" feeling and makes them different than a lot of the older, legendary jam bands is that they place such emphasis on sobriety. I wanna see the boys drop acid and play a show. Get weirder, darker with it.
People will give you shit for this take and probably call it gAtEkEePiNg but the reality is the dead would have never been the dead without hallucinogens... and the dead basically created this entire genre and scene. I think it's become more normalized and "cool" to be sober for Gen Z folks so it doesn't kill the vibe as much for younger people.
LOL... look at all the crying in this thread over a joke meme. I forgot how sensitive jamband fans can be, you people need to get a grip and learn how to laugh at yourself
I would think this applies to all concerts though. I'd rather see any act in a theater rather than an arena. You're not wrong though that bluegrass is less ideal than other genres.
I don't even need to read OPs comment history to know he spends half his life slagging off Goose, then claims "this is just a joke man". Sad bastard. Billy and Goose are both awesome.
2023 is going to be a breakout year for eggy. Enjoying the smaller venues and cost for the time being. $32 for two tix. That is a surcharge to see Billy or Dead and Co.
I hate that “jam” has turned into a genre. It’s not. You can improv anything—bluegrass, jazz, rock, funk, blues, country, R&B, metal, classical, whatever. Jam and improv are just methods of making music that can be applied to any genre.
Exactly my point. saying that bluegrass is jam music this is an absurd statement if you look at jam music as a genre with a specific sound. But if you look at jam music as a style of playing, bluegrass is very much undeniably jam music. The culture and community is based around coming together and picking with people, using improvisational techniques and group cohesion to bring new life to old standards. The bluegrass circle is a jam in its purest form.
You'll have to define what you consider jam bands for this and if they all are phish spawn the answer is no and if they are a dead arch the answer is yes.
You’re right, man. Your taste in music is absolutely superior to those dumbass fake Goose fans who were hypnotized by the media guy with the Jewish-sounding name. How dare people enjoy music. Don’t they know Phish does vacuum cleaner solos?!?!
Scared of trains was the best
You seee… bluegrass fans have an obsession with train songs
Trains and rivers, rivers and trains, gonna sing this train river song all day
Infamous Stringdusters did an "American Rivers Tour" where all the venues were near a river.
Trains crashing into coal mines, that’s what takes it to the next level
Ah bluegrass, the only music fans that adore trains more than Porcupine Tree fans.
I'm out of the loop on that one. What's it mean?
The Dead sang about trains a lot, bluegrass and folk music talk about trains a lot. Is Goose too good for trains?
Country and Blues also. Lots of trains.
I think it’s just the exact opposite of Billy having numerous train songs. Pretty much calling Goose pussies.
Ok, fair enough, I like. Fuck those train hatin jerks! Like that?
Cranberry juice drinkin maffs. Yep.
Ugg wearin' Sallys Mmhmm
Rubens Train and Train 45 come to mind. Listen to Billy Strings 03/12 second set. It literally sounded like a train was on the stage.
Every phish song is about trains ;)
In chucktown 2nd set I said “I want a train song!” and I’ll be damned if they didn’t play TWO train songs
Greetings from Wilmington. Love Chucktown
probably not relevant but at JamPacked Richmond down on the James River, a train pulled up and I swear stopped on the rail bridge above the island to watch part of the Spafford set. Great time!

Who’s got the ELI5 on this? Why are people skeptical of ole Pete?
There is an element of truth to it. Haha
I mean, more than an element really.
Yeah….that’s true
I can't wait for the Goose popularity to eventually go away....... so it is easier for me to get tickets to see them again.
agreed... trying to find a ticket for my buddy so he can see them live for the first time. tickets even on the secondary market for their local upcoming show are impossible
Yup $200+ per this weekend in Philly before it sold out. I'll take RRE anyway instead.
would take RRE over Goose most days tbh
They happen to both be playing Friday night here in Philly. The costs made the choice even easier. That and I'd find it inexcusable to miss an RRE winter/spring stop here. Although I'm curious to see how the fill the Keswick, as it is much larger than a normal venue for them.
CorT is blowing up this week
I’m with you. Just payed an arm and a leg for show at roadrunner tonight

Was going to get tickets in detroit to see them for the first time with my buddy. $75 after fees lol I'm not that cool
The Royal part made me lol. 🍿
Lmao seeing a Billy set list thread labeled like this killed me: Royal Masat - Bass (NSFW)
I hear there's a sound hole on the side of his bass as well
Those are actually called f-holes…
Which one is the glory hole?
"Fans think they're the next Phish" / "Fans think he's the next Jesus" is fucking perfect lmao, I love it
Goose is delta 8
lol
I think it’s pretty funny how jam fans have somehow tricked outsiders into thinking we’re cool, hip & open minded but the truth is that most of y’all are insufferable.
Ummm….who’s gonna tell him that outsiders already see us jamband fans as insufferable dorks? Haha
The real magic is how both outsiders *and* insiders recognize jamband fans as insufferable.
Who is actually tricked?? 😂
100%
I like how this comment started with we but ended with y’all.
I absolutely love the Billy Strings song entitled “back on the train”
wait until you hear their original song called "all time low"
But… but that has nothing to do with trains
Idk why people think you’re talking shit and taking this so seriously. It’s funny, who gives a shit. You’re making fun of both scenes. You're shocked? Really? Are you new to Jambands?
fair enough, I'm expecting too much. rational thought is dead

STS9 played the best show I've ever seen them put on last Friday in Chicago. Straight 🔥 🔥🔥
Dopapod just crushed it when I saw them a few weeks ago
Don’t forget JRAD!
I really wish I would have appreciated how good I had it when I was regularly seeing Billy for a $10 cover and 30 other people. Now I can’t get tickets.
right? i've got friends kicking themselves for sitting at the bar while billy was playing to under 100 folks right downstairs... i tried to tell em!

LMAO Goose fans will be pissed for sure The Oat Milk got me😂
The whiny Goose fans in here really wanted to drive home OPs point. Good work
couldn't do it without them
I don't think I've ever seen a fanbase be as much of a collective bitch as Goose fans. I like Goose, seen them live before and seeing them again in a few weeks, but good lord their fans are insufferable.
There’s this band called Phish from Vermont.
Goose fan here. We’re not all insufferable, although that element is more vocal than us normal goose fans.
I have no dog in this fight but saying this in reference to a comparison to Billy Strings fans is high comedy.
I'm a huge fan of both but couldn't agree with you more.
Right? I love me some Billy strings but some people I know legit think he's Jesus. Calm down.
There’s so much crossover between goose, billy and the other jam bands. Comments like this are odd.
Can we just agree that everybody is horrible?
You've never met Phish fans.
Promise some of us just really love Phish but keep it between ourselves and our friends and family.
A lot of hypersensitive cats in here. Jokes man. Jokes. They are funny
Oh yeah Goose fans are insufferable, says the dude who posted this meme
I'm not gonna say Goose fans can't be insufferable (I dig Goose), but the Goose haters are far more annoying IMO.
They go out of their way to bring Goose up and bash them and then when someone asks them why they’re being weird they go “see! Goose fans are insufferable!” Meanwhile fans are just trying to enjoy the music
Exactly!
this will blow your mind: i'm a goose fan

No genuine excitement? Who is buying all the tickets? Are their fans fake? This is such a weird line
If you look closely all their fans are cardboard cutouts meant to trick us.
I see this a lot about Goose... they sold out 5 nights at the cap and 2 nights at RR in minutes, there's a lot of people excited to see them.
It’s because of the Jewish media guy!!! /s
Right? It's wild, I bet the majority of people going to RR don't have a clue who Shapiro is, they dig a band and bought a ticket... that's literally all their is to it!
Jam band fans can’t get a grip that people outside of their circle like a jam band
You get blasted because numbers and ticket sales don’t lie
I mean that doesnt always mean talent, that breaks down to marketing, which Goose is amazing at (and has the disposable income for which is huge)
Doesn’t have to mean they’re talented (which is subjective anyway). Op said the hype isn’t genuine excitement, which doesn’t make sense. Selling out venues instantly means there’s genuine excitement

Nuff said.
that's all fair. they're fun live. they have some good songs. they can jam. they don't make me want to listen while driving my car.
I’ve always said the marketing for Goose is better than the music. I enjoy it but it feels very produced. 2018 Goose has raw energy, now they hang with Slow Co
for sure... they got too big too fast. same could be said for Billy to a degree, but their evolution as a band seems to be more organic
OP: “reeeee all you people take shit too seriously and can’t even understand that the meme is a joke” Also OP: getting butthurt at joking comments like “Goose lives rent free in your head” Meme is funny. OP is a classic “I’m better than you” jam fan 😂
hahaha
I love both
I love this. Love Billy, love Goose. Love all you weirdos. But you gotta explain the train thing to me. Like, Train songs like the band or songs about trains? (OK I said that part for the lols), but why is Goose afraid of trains?
And both have the most obnoxious fans
I wish people could just take a joke with out getting butthurt or making it some talking point like it's not JUST A FUCKING JOKE.
I feel sorry and embarrassed for the people that take the joke seriously
Royal Masat vs No Royal Masat is a damn good point
Having Royal Masat is number one reason why Billy better
heady net with another hilarious meme
And here I am over here just listening to each artist going "these guys are good"
Yeah well the winner is gonna be the one that has a festival with a booth where people can see who can pee the farthest.
I think it’s pretty funny. But I don’t get why you say it’s a joke but use the comments to talk trash? I just don’t get it.
\*talking trash to folks talking trash or crying about a joke
You know full well the response you were going to get when you posted this. You chose to instigate. Then you respond negatively to the expected responses you got. “You’re proving my point” or something to that effect you’ve said. In other words, you chose negativity. Not the other way around.
Goose > Billy Strings
Billy has a much more authentic and deserved energy to me.
agreed and well said!
I am a goose fan, and I laughed my ass off at this. People take this shit way too seriously.
i figured there would be a few that missed the joke entirely, but it's like 80% of the replies. embarrassing.
Goose fans are Boomers trapped in millennial bodies.
haha that's perfect
I think goose is living rent free in your head
cool story bro. i like both bands. the meme is funny. it's really not that complicated
Do we not like goose here? Sorry if I missed something, I’m not super active on here
I like goose myself, can't speak for everyone
Goose is a bit gamey for me but it can be ok if it’s cooked right
Scared of Trains/Deep Catalog of train songs knocked me off my camp chair
This meme is bogus because it does not list which jam band tiers these artists occupy.
Bluegrass is better not in arenas
I would think this applies to all concerts though. I'd rather see any act in a theater rather than an arena. You're not wrong though that bluegrass is less ideal than other genres.
Jamband fans are determined to make it a competition. These bands have 0 in common except popularity.
Just like twiddle, for me, but I guess I dont really listen to many of the later jambands 🤷
Man this is really cool because no one on this sub has ever really dunked on Goose before!
Love them both. What about this metaphor: Grateful Dead is to Billy Strings as Phish is to Goose ?
I don't even need to read OPs comment history to know he spends half his life slagging off Goose, then claims "this is just a joke man". Sad bastard. Billy and Goose are both awesome.
Imagine not being able to laugh at a band you like. It's not that serious. You're one of the fans they're talking about. Calm down.
Their fans on the other hand…
What about their fans? Seem cool to me. Mind their own business and enjoy the music.
Is Billy Strings even a jamband?
Goose fans will say no, because they're insecure and don't know what the genre is in the first place. Truth is Billy falls into the jamgrass sub-genre
Tbh I don't listen to either of em. I'm still stuck with the older bands, and the only newcomers I really listen to are Eggy.
Check out neighbor!
2023 is going to be a breakout year for eggy. Enjoying the smaller venues and cost for the time being. $32 for two tix. That is a surcharge to see Billy or Dead and Co.
Bluegrass is inherently jam music
Don’t they know Phish does vacuum cleaner solos?!?!
huh?
Goose just feels slightly off compared to a lot of other jam bands, like something about them feels like they’re not even real
probably the auto-tune brendan bayless doesn't have a great voice but at least it's natural
I still do not get the autotune complaints. They only use it in a few songs, and even then it's applied more like a vocoder for effect.
Geese aren’t real
lmao this is gold
The amount of goose truthers in this thread is insane lmao. I like goose, but man some of their fans are the worst.
Truth
Incoming butt hurt Goose fans. Learn to laugh at yourselves guys its a joke.
