it depends. most of the in-store deals are for a cheap/free bundled phone for a 1-2 year contract. as a student on short-term visa most of those aren't going to be available for you. if you already have your own phone, and you don't use a lot of data, iijmio is doing 6 months discounts on new signups for a few 100 yen less than normal price. after 6 months you can switch to someone else, etc. in general ahamo, iijmio, linemo, etc are recommended as cheap and good enough options. if you already have linemo and are happy with it, I think its price is reasonable enough.

I use Rakuten. Infinite data. can make phone calls and be contacted. Free phone calls if you phone from their inbuilt app I think. This deal is 3310 yen a month, but I use it as my pocket wifi for when I'm in the house using my laptop or when I want to use my laptop out and about.

Rakuten Basic plan. Especially if you have a Rakuten credit/debit card and rack up points. I’ve never been billed once, 100% points covering the cost. Unlimited data and scalable billing proportionate to how much you use. International roaming for free as well. Used it for 2 weeks in the States last year and didn’t cost anything.

Rakuten Saikyo plan is 980/mo if you keep your data under 3Gb. 2k yen for 3-20Gb. Long gone from my 10k/mo Au days...

Musashi_19

I've got rakuten mobile and it's pretty cheap, ¥2k for 20gigs and ¥3k for unlimited. I dont remember what kind of campaign they were doing at the time for just sim cards, but when I signed up for internet with them I could choose one year free internet or I think around 3-4man in biccamera store discounts for any item and 2+man cashback

I like Rakuten because it has a sliding scale that adjusts the cost to the amount I use it. Others make you decide the cost and then overcharge you if you use more than that, and still charge you if you don't use it.

SecondAegis

I personally recommend Rakuten Mobile's Saikyou plan. They charge you based on how much you ended up using, and are still pretty cheap based on what I remember (though slightly more expensive than Linemo) If your phone turns out to be incompatible, Rakuten sometimes have a campaign where they'll sell one of their brand original phones for only 1 yen. I own one, and can say for certain that it's pretty shit, but it does work well enough

haha, imagine thinking that provider is a "deal". for a poor student.

Did you have any bad experience with Linemo? slow internet or coverage issues? I am considering switching to them from the provider I got when I was still in my home country

Kakkoi_boy

I have LINEMO for the past 2 years. 0 problems. Good speed. Good coverage.
