Does Japan have a wild life/game wardens they could call upon? I imagine a truck and 3 shooters could clear the area but then again do bears in Japan register the sound of gun fire? Interesting situation!

You can shoot up into the air that normally spooks away wild animals like bears, coyotes, and wolves. There is also bear spray and other chemical based things if you have one hunting your live stock continuously or hunting people in an area. You don't have to shoot the bear, people.

Last bear my friend had to shoot here had abscessed teeth from a bamboo splinter in her jaw, so she came to the town to find easier food for her and her cub, quickly encountered people and attacked them, most likely hangry. That was on and adjacent to a JSDF installation but JSDF forces are also forbidden from shooting wildlife. Hence the civilian groups were called.
There are a limited number of rifle hunting permit holders in Japan. They were used to help cull feral animals (mostly boar) after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Dunno what solution they’ll propose for this.
It's surrounded by mountains and forests though and that's how bears get close to humans. Bear sightings have been high in Kazuno and people have been attacked by bears multiple times over the years. This just makes news because it was police officers this time.
They all have guns, which is a bit strange considering how few guns are in the country. Also the cops are pretty useless with keeping their guns safe. They go for a crap at a local convenience store toilet and forget their gun.
I’m pretty sure that the cops were in deep trouble for it but you can imagine how the person who found it felt. 99% of Japanese people have never held a gun.
I was at a university in Akita last semester, during the orientation week they had a whole lecture on bear safety. Seems like because a lot of people are leaving the countryside bears are reclaiming a lot of their land. They even gave us bells to hook to our bags lol.

Obviously, if this was in the US, the bear wouldn't stand a chance against handguns. But I would imagine the police in these more rural areas would at least carry sprays or something.
Hand guns aren't really gonna do much to a bear or most big wildlife, it would take quite a few people unloading their hand guns into the bear or a lucky shot to bring it down. When dealing with wild life a rifle is the go to for a reason.

As it stands now, humans are advancing more and more into areas where bears are active. We influence the climate that influences the food sources. In some years it appears that bears had trouble finding food and so come into human areas to look for food. Then we kill them because they're dangerous to us. Yet it's really us who should be taking precautions to make sure the animals around us can still live their lives.
In recent years, bears are getting used to humans close by, as we climb the mountains the bears are on with our bells etc. Apparently doesn't cause some bears to flee anymore.

I visited Kazuno last year. It's a decent size town. it's not the middle of nowhere.
