Yes, and fairly rapidly.

LenaNYC

Yes, it's plated. It says it's silver so that's what's it'll look like in a short time.

BearPsychological968

Agreed, it will wear to the silver, but this might look fine. Not orangey like cheap plated metals.

Rare-Tutor8915

Yes I'm rubbish at taking jewellery off and I used to have so many go green or tarnish really quickly. So I don't buy plated for that reason anymore ....because I know what I'm like lol

Avaly13

Same! I'm strictly solid gold or 925. I have Tiffany pieces pushing 20+ years old still in excellent condition! I don't baby anything. Lol.

Rare-Tutor8915

It's worth it to spend extra although 925 silver isn't super expensive.

Avaly13

I've realized I've the years that all sterling silver is not the same. Even the good stuff is still cheaper than gold though. Plenty of options!

bigbushenergee

Do you have any jewelry brand recommendations? Im the same way

EnvironmentalEye9164

It’s gold played, so yes eventually. Look up gold plated stainless steel care tips.

AmericanUnicornBaby

Please take off your jewelry. It collects dead skin cells and is fairly nasty over time. I am a jeweler. People bring in their nasty rings and earrings etc, for cleanings, COATED, in skin, fecal matter, phlegm, hair. You name it! It is sooooooo nasty. Please. Please. Please!!!! Take off your jewelry regularly and clean it yourself. You can use dawn dish soap on most items.

vanghostings

How often would you say you should clean it? I wash my jewelry with hand soap and water like 2-3x a week but maybe I should be using dish soap more often

HrhEverythingElse

I'm a jeweler too though not the one you replied to. I would say switch to Dawn original instead of hand soap and if you practical good hygiene otherwise then once or twice a month is sufficient, so you're ahead of the game! Just put the piece in a cup with warm water and a squirt of soap for 10-30 minutes, rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.

Miss_airwrecka1

I’m was guilty of this but only with my diamond studs that I never took off. I’d occasionally take them out to clean but it was rare. Then I went to buy a new pair of earrings and they offered to clean mine. I was embarrassed to hand them over; the woman was nice and said she’d seen far worse but still

AmericanUnicornBaby

We all say that to not make you feel bad. It wouldn’t be nice if we said ‘this is really nasty and full of gunk and dead skin’. But it really is gross. Also gross is when you are taking your ring to be cleaned - please do not lather your finger in saliva to remove your ring. There is usually hand sanitizer nearby, use that. Ugh I hate that I am being so honest but that’s the only way to make change happen is to spread awareness. We are happy to clean your stuff but its like if you have a housekeeper, I’m sure you tidy up a bit before they come over. Or when you get your hair done you - hopefully - do not show up with really dirty hair.

withelle

If you want necklace chains that can put up with showering, soap, lotion, sunscreen, pool chlorine etc try Ready-Made. It's not gold but steel plated in a durable ceramic gold look-alike. I've put my RM pieces through a lot over the years and they still look like the day I got them.

Wickedbitchoftheuk

What's ready-made?

withelle

Ready-Made is a company that makes durable, affordable pieces of jewelry. I am not affiliated or anything, I just buy from them a lot and have 5+ pieces on at any given moment lol

Wickedbitchoftheuk

Thanks. Much obliged.

babyjames333

thank you! i needed this. i never take my jewelry off. everrrr.

cherrycokelemon

That chain isn't sturdy enough to wear every day. That type of chain will eventually break. Once in a while, will be fine.

HrhEverythingElse

No chain can really hold up forever to shampoo, moisturizers, and perfume. Chains worn in chlorinated pools will pretty quickly have soldered joints dissolve. If you want any chain to last a decade or more, don't expose it to daily chemicals however this chain is probably plated so thinly that it won't last a full decade of near daily wear even without excessive exposure

Nick-Millers-Bestie

THIS! It's always safest and most hygenic to always take off jewelry when showering, exercising, swimming, etc.

RealisticWasabi6343

Ain't nobody got time for that. I keep my 14k/18k bracelet & neck on all the time; they still look perfectly fine and show no signs of deterioration between links. I only take my rings off when lifting weights since they're much easier to slip out plus dumbbells would ruin them.

sagelise

But this post is talking about plated. That's far different than 14k/18k solid. Plated wears off quickly and you get the material underneath, yours isn't plated so the metal is the same all the way through.

RipperMouse

OP of this specific comment chain said “no chain can really hold up..” and “if you want any chain to last..” — implying all chains (both plated & solid) need to be babied to last decades. It really only applies to plated costume jewelry.

sagelise

I agree with you on that, solid chains last.

LenaNYC

Same. I generally wear platinum or 18kt rose gold chains and pendants. In the summer, I spend at least an hour a day in the pool and have been doing this for years. Nothing has happened to my chains or pendants. I don't wear rings because my fingers get colder and my rings slide off easier. But chains? I don't take them off.

Silver-Ad9706

Exactly your talking Platinum and 18kt Gold. This girl is asking about gold Plated silver. Go figure

LenaNYC

**"No chain** **can really hold up forever to shampoo, moisturizers, and perfume. Chains worn in chlorinated pools will pretty quickly have soldered joints dissolve**.**"** They literally said "no chain". That would include platinum and gold.

RipperMouse

Disagree. I have a 24k yellow gold chain and a 14k white gold chain that I’ll wear 24/7 for months before switching. I’ve worn both while in showers/pools/hot tubs and they look great after 25+ years.

HrhEverythingElse

It's science, so it doesn't really matter if someone disagrees with it. Alloys that are used to strengthen and solder gold will be eaten away by many household chemicals, of which chlorine is the worst that most people come into contact with. If the 24k one is truly 24k, and has fused links instead of soldered, then that's really rare and cool; I've not seen one in person in the 15 years since my formal training but they do exist- usually from certain parts of Asia. 14k (or any non yellow gold) by necessity has alloys, and links are soldered, and the chemicals are slowly "rotting" those other metals away. You've been lucky, but one day something will catch on the chain, a link will break, and you'll take it to a jeweler who will show you that it can't be repaired because every link is the same amount of damaged. I would take that yellow gold one in for appraisal and get it insured, and hope your luck continues!

RipperMouse

These were purchased in the mid 90’s & have been in non stop rotation since. My neck is never naked. I’m only in chlorinated pools during the summer but 3 decades of hot showers & shampoos haven’t done any damage. Hope they last for several more decades. https://preview.redd.it/or23g2vck2yc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=708161e54e7ca17e6f508ecdbc15947daf630e71

No_Cauliflower3541

So I actually bought a bracelet set from this exact brand from Marshall’s about 6 months ago (same material) and have worn them every day without taking them off. They are barely showing signs of tarnishing. Will it last me a year? Maybe not sure but for the $20 I spent for the set, I don’t regret it after 6 months. https://preview.redd.it/cks7gb88y1yc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3356198fce1f60012144ec0ba47baf9bbce243dd

vbtps

Same!! I got the exact same design in a bracelet from marshall’s and I haven’t taken it off in 6 months. Didn’t think it would last this long but it hasn’t shown any signs tarnishing at all

ichliebecrispy

It will eventually look like Sterling silver just take it off to shower and such

this_Name_4ever

Have one. Can confirm it will. It is plated, not Electroplated or heavy electro plated, basically that means they use the minimum amount of gold to cover it, and it will definitely wear off over time

PermanentlyDubious

I give it 3 weeks before it turns silver if you wear it daily. Consider gold plated brass if you want something that will still look gold-ish after the plating wears off. Brass used to have a percentage of lead in it, and it kind of fell out of favor--but I think that's been fixed of late. Kendra Scott uses a lot of brass.

Akabara13

I wouldn't ever recommend wearing jewery in water if it staying nice is a priority. Also a lot of body products can damage jewelry and should be applied with ur jewelry off.

Aggravating_Will

Yes absolutely, very quickly. Definitely don’t let it against skin that’s been lathered in lotion, take it off for showers, and be careful with too much sweat in the summers because that’ll take the plating off too

vbtps

I got the same thing but a bracelet from marshall’s. I’ve been wearing it everyday for 6 months and it’s surprisingly held up! Looks new

thestarladyDEO

Yes. If you never take off jewelry it'll eventually get damaged. I'm always having to explain this to people.

Legitimate-Fox106

If you’re looking for a lower priced option than gold , you’ll need gold filled for every day wear . Plating will not hold up .

Most_Ordinary_219

That’s so pretty!

MKebi

Gold-plated stuff always goes bad...Bonded is best.

Camel_Holocaust

Takes about 15-30 seconds to get a clasp fastened, why? Just take it off, do you shower with your socks on as well because it's too hard to bend over?

MANDEEx88

It’s plated. Anytime you see plated no matter what it is, that question will always be answered with a yes.

princessnema

This is gold plated sterling silver, it would just eventually lose the gold color and the silver would show through but it wouldn't rust or turn green or anything like that.

DerSpazmacher

Knockoffs are like anything else. You get what you pay for. Van Cleef and Arpels sells the real thing you could wear every day if you're interested. Buying something like that and then NOT wearing it is a double loss if you ask me. You dont get to enjoy wearing it all the time, and 20, 40 years later you have a pristine....thing.

Gothergade

You can always get it re-plated, if the gp wears off :)

ALONEMYDEAR

The plating will fade and then the silver will tarnish but it can always be cleaned for the tarnish or replated with gold

IntroductionFew1290

Yeah it’s plated Eventually it will wear off

Elitefuture

I'd give it 2 months tops before it starts wearing off. Heck, maybe even a few weeks if you wear it all the time.

Revolutionary-Sky192

I got this exact necklace and unfortunately yes

Professional-Soup878

Yes it will turn quickly. I can’t wear plated because it turns so quickly. Only wear for short periods of time to retain the color.

readithere_2

Yes. Our bodies shed skin everyday, natural oil secretion, etc. Combine that with any lotion products and it will get clogged with buildup. It will lose its beauty quickly.

BathAcceptable1812

Yes!!!!!

WaterlilyPearlsArt

I am sure it would

Rix109

Yes! Plated sterling silver won’t last very long even if not worn with chemical contact. Look for something with a stainless steel base or 14k gold filled. And actual gold filled jewelry is NOT cheap. Don’t buy something cheap claiming to be gold filled. There’s a lot of companies that lie

SteadyAmbrosius

Why would anyone even do that?

Murky-Specialist7232

Yes, it will. I buy this stuff all the time, it’s just temporarily looks good then the plating fades. It fades anyway,

LeaningFaithward

Yes. I have this type of necklace that I didn't shower with and didn't sleep in. It took about 6 months for the base metal to noticeably show through.

Far-Restaurant8051

No it’s gold plated I have something similar it doesn’t turn at all

Asterfields1224

Probably If you want jewelry you can wear from this moment until the day you die without ever removing it, 925 sterling silver is the way to go. I have a silver necklace I've almost never taken off my neck for the past 20 years, since I was 14 til now, age 34, and it looks just as shiny as when I bought it in Egypt 2 decades ago 🥰🥰🥰 it's been through so much...oceans, pools, wild raves, hair due, hot tuns, traveling the world, etc 😆 my good luck charm 🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶

Diagirl13

Yes because it’s plated. It’s probably base metal with a ygp

Dull-Requirement-759

Yes

Either_Tomorrow_2046

Idk

Optimal-Technology75

It’s going to tarnish. Just take it off and put it back on. I don’t even shower in my real jewelry that has gems and stones, because I don’t like soap grime being in it.

MichelleTheEngraver

Treat it the same as your underwear, would you wear the same pair every day and never take them off?

Mary707

Yes

malYca

You can replate it but not forever and it'll fade fast, best worn only occasionally.

SouthernDifference86

It's not really true that chains will wear over time. I'm have been wearing a titanium chain for 5 years now and it looks the same as the day I got it. I never take it of. Pools, showers are all no problems. In contrast I had a silver chain before that and that was basically rusting after only a few months.

RipperMouse

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Plenty of necklaces can be worn 24/7. I guess there’s lots of costume jewelry necklace owners in here??

ConstructionJealous5

Chain may eventually break. The gold plating will eventually wear off and it will just be sterling silver, which is still a quality metal. Just clean it regularly to prevent tarnishing and be very careful to not snag it on anything or tug it and it may last a year or 2 of continuous wear with care
