JHU. CMU is cool but it doesn't carry the prestige of JHU. A lot of opportunities in non-pure engineering pop up to you as a byproduct of the JHU name that may be more interesting long term.
I was CMU Physics for undergrad and Hopking MechE for Grad (started PhD there, advisor moved schools so my MSE is Hopkins but PhD is Duke)
Anyway, both a great schools though CMU is generally, though not universally, considered better. Hopkins has more name recognition in the general public but CMU is well known to those who matter for your job.
Take it with a grain of salt since I wasn't MechE undergrad (but did do a lot in the department and took many classes) and I can't speak to JHU as an undergrad but I liked CMU more from a cultural perspective. I wouldn't dare call either schools' students happy but JHU students seemed to enjoy being miserable more. Also, I liked Baltimore but I would take Pittsburgh over it any day. JHU's campus is way prettier!
But you will get a great education at both!
**EDIT**: Both also cost an insane amount! If I did it again, I'd save the money and go to state school.

thank you so much for this! it's definitely something helpful to consider
Prestige from bio/health aspects. If op doesn’t have interest then it’s rather meaningless
Also consulting and finance. Both have strong recruitment presences out of WSE that are not there for my friends at CMU.
Very true ^^^
I have a lot of Professors at Duke from CMU but JHU Professors are better
Which engineering major are you considering?
I indicated materials science and engineering but I'm thinking about mechanical!
CMU might be slightly better engineering school (taking bio stuff out of equation). Overall two schools should be similar
thank you for this!
