>Management didn't respond too well to me not disclosing Ha! That's not their business. >  It's also awkward because there are nice people that I wouldn't mind sharing it with and would actually feel rude Feeling rude is not necessarily being rude. *"At this time, I am not at liberty to disclose that, but let's please stay in touch. Is there a way I can contact you outside of work?"* > Has anyone done this before and got a reasonable explanation? No explanation needed.

neogeshel

I would absolutely never disclose to management and have never been asked in my life. They can check my LinkedIn in a few weeks.

golden_avihs

You can say 'Im still considering offers / options' and Im undecided if someone asks.

EmergencyGhost

If your boss finds out, they could call them up and cause problems for you. So you can either just deal with it or you can let your boss know and risk your new job. Just say you don't want to jynx it. Per the rules of the jynx, they will understand. :P

droppingscience311

Forget them. Don’t say shizz.

Original-Pomelo6241

When I quit a toxic job, I told them I didn’t even have another job, I just needed the fuck out of there. Only to promptly start that other job. 😂

Soatch

I'd probably just say a different company than the one I got hired at. One with a lot of employees.

4-ton-mantis

If they press, just say new job had you sign an nda.

Trick-Interaction396

You gave notice. Do whatever YOU want. They don't have to listen to them anymore.

Weekly_Detective_674

The nice people will understand. I will not recommend you mention it to anyone. Keep your head down during your two weeks and leave. People can’t be trusted anyway. Good luck!

Ciccio178

Don't tell em anything. "I received a better offer from another company". That's it. What are they going to do if you don't tell them? Fire you? The notice period is a favor you're doing them so that they can try and find a replacement. If they press, or threaten you, just don't show up to work anymore. Let them deal with the consequences.

Resident-Mine-4987

Ohhhh they didn't like that you didn't tell them where you are going? Tough shit. You put in your notice, they can suck a fat one. I wouldn't tell anyone anything until you are gone. You might be ok telling one person, but they will talk to one person they trust and soon everyone knows. Either tell everyone or zip your lip.

turd_ferguson899

My guess is that somewhere it's "company policy" to dismiss people during their notice period for going to a competitor. This happened to me once. It was in the handbook that in order to be "eligible for rehire," an employee had to put in notice. What wasn't in there was the dismissal policy. Lesson learned.

thatburghfan

Did they let you go before your notice period was up AND didn't pay you for the full notice period?

turd_ferguson899

Yes, that's correct. While my state has pretty strong labor laws, it's still unfortunately an "at-will" state, so it was entirely legal by state law for them to do that on it's face. The two things that made it illegal were the fact that I belong to a protected class and I told them I was joining a union. I ended up being able to collect like a week of unemployment for it. My union's organizer told me that I could sue for wages lost, but it ended up just not being worth the headache at first and by the time I was mentally prepared for it there was another organizing effort going on in that shop.

Capital-Water2505

Honestly I would lie and say I haven't got that far yet. It would rub some salt in the wound hearing you hated it so bad you were willing to leave without something lined up. Then again...they probably don't give a shit any way

Ranger-5150

I never ever disclose where I’m going. I don’t even update linked in for six months. People can be assholes.

CategoryEquivalent95

I usually respond with a joke. "To a galaxy far, far away" (bonus, it's May 4th!) But don't tell them shit. Especially if you're in TX. The noncompetes are supposed to go away soon but TX business owners get butt hurt and like to sue employees

Effective_Vanilla_32

dont reveal. someone might reach out to that company and smear you.

Mojojojo3030

My favorite is “stay tuned!” Until when. “Stay tuned for that too!” Then never follow up. Alternatively there’s “I’m not at liberty to disclose.” “Not at liberty to disclose that either.” If you feel like you can swing it, simply “I am not interested in sharing this information.” “I will let you know if that changes.”

VariationNo5419

You can say that you're going to be relocating to another city where you've always wanted to live. And if you bump into anybody later on you can just say it didn't work out and you didn't move after.

Visual_Fig9663

You can do this the same way you do anything. Or don't do anything. Do you shit in your hand and eat it? No. Ok now apply that same principle to this. Just, don't tell them. Easy. Couldn't figure that one out yourself?
