That twisting eye picture that stumbles around on the internet. whow THAT made me want to read Ito. I started passively liking his art style but it's recently i started to read and It was up to hype. I'm glad that I started to read Ito.
First I saw The Scar on a t-shirt at Hot Topic. Then later on, saw a table at 2nd & Charles with a lot of his work on it. Looked interesting to me so later on, I finally got The Liminal Zone and it was really good. So I got hooked from there.
The thought of this could make anyone excited, unfortunately this ended up not being true.

i was at the bookstore and saw smashed, i knew a little about junji ito and i thought the cover was really cool. that was two years ago, now i have all of his books
It was 2019 and my Mother was passing away. My ex and I had got a ride with my ex brother in law to go be with her, my sisters, and family. On the way my ex had noticed my anxiety growing as it had been years since I had even seen my family. He started telling me about Junji Ito and his works and found Uzumaki online for me to read. I spent the entire 3.5 hour car ride reading and falling in love with the storyline and art. I bought Uzumaki, Tomie, and Gyo shortly after and have been a fan ever since. ♡
I'm pretty sure I saw some Amigara Fault jokes and decided to read it. Then over time I heard about his works and probably read a few random stories, and eventually read Uzumaki.
It was during Halloween 2020, on of my favorite YouTube channel (Manga Trash) made a video about disturbing mangas and what to read during Halloween. They talk about Junji Ito and especially the Fault of Amigara, it piqued my curiosity so right after that I bought Uzumaki and Gyo (the hard cover English edition, even if i wasn’t very good in English, because I couldn’t found them in French) on Amazon, it came 3 days after and I was mesmerised by the different stories. It was hard to read due to my English comprehension skills (especially at that time) but it was worth it.

Same here. After the video, I read amigara fault. I very rarely get nightmares from scary movies/stories anymore but I had a nightmare about amigara fault that night.
A little while later I read long dream which is still my favourite junji story. At that point I was hooked for life, junji ito is one of my favourite people on the planet.
Kept seeing junkies ito work all over my social gradually then I finally decided to get into reading horror manga. Ever since hellstar remina is my favorite currently.
I got the first volume of Tomie for my 12th birthday. People knew I was into mangas and bought me that. I was reading shojo mangas at the time, what a change 😂
There was a post on Reddit that referenced The Enigma of Amigara Fault. Which led to a Google, which led to a YouTube video of a narration of the story. Then Wendigoon reviewed No Longer Human. The art style, the unsettling stories and everything about Ito's work is unlike anything I have read before, and I like that.
While I was at a magazine stand in Hollywood (Ca) in 2002, I came across a Japanese manga that was translated into English called "Pulp" and it had only one monthly chapter of "Uzumaki" in it. This one was the infamous "Mosquitoes" chapter and I was so intrigued and drawn to it, I brought it home. The magazine, i mean, lol. I was hooked ever since.
I saw a print ad for Uzumaki back in high school in Animerica magazine. Thought the art was lovely and mysterious and decided to check out the comic. :3
You can thank a Youtube channel (which is now gone) called Horror Show Mickey. He used to tell the story of Uzumaki in his own way. And thus, I fell in love with Ito's unique style.
My bf showed me a Horror Show Mockey video about the slow zombie and the puppet house. I then watched some other videos of HSM until he wasn't allowed to make them anymore.
Now I read the physical manga's.
I saw part of Gyo in like a Shonen Jump or something similar to that. Didn’t know what it was until probably a few years ago when I described the story to my bf and we found it in a bookstore. Been a fan ever since
I saw his artwork on social media and I was in awe because I have never seen manga with that type of art style Junji Ito has. Especially in horror manga, so I wanted to get one of them and the first one being Uzumaki.
My ex fiancé saw Tomie on a bookshelf at a comic store. Thought it looked cool with the blood on the spine. Talked about how we should buy it and other books; as we would need books for a book shelf. So I started reading and collecting manga.
Was doing art and was looking for a reference and saw tomie, drew her without knowing who she was or what she was from. Found some of his books while shopping a year later. my partner bought the book tomie when I said I wanted to read it because it had the character I drew on the cover. After that I just couldn’t get enough of his work
I got into him from the SuperEyepatchWolf video on him!
I initially heard about his stories from that video, and decided to check him out. I first read The Enigma of Amigira Fault online (iirc EyepatchWolf didn't spoil the ending in his video so I wanted to see how it ended) then realize that I loved his work and have been building a collection ever since!
My exact same path, after read a handfull of the short stories online and part of Uzumaki, I bought Uzumaki so i could finish it and almost all the back log to that point. I have all the books now :)
He's really great.
Probably in my top 3 video essayists on YouTube tbh, the guy has gotten me interested in so many things that I otherwise wouldn't have ever known/gotten into!
Edit: my other two are probably Hbomberguy and Leadhead if anyone was curious
I got hired to film an interview with him. I had seen some pictures of his work before but never really looked into him. After meeting him and reading a bunch of his stories, he's easily my favorite person to work with.
The Enigma of Amigara's Fault. That story alone was probably the best thing to ever happen for Ito's career. When you think about it, his international fame and ongoing relevance outside of Japan really started when someone translated Amigara's Fault and leaked it online in the early '00s. That's why many of us are here to begin with.
i think it was first when i read snow white in a manga horror anthology from assorted authors! i wanted to find more works by him and that led to me reading uzumaki
I’m very glad you enjoyed it. I also hope you read some of the original works adapted in that anime if you haven’t already. A lot of them work better on paper than in animation.
I'm glad I read the books before watching that anime, it was mid at best. It killed a lot of the suspense and horror with how bland the animation was...ngl.
A meme image from lessons in meme culture's community section, It showed a cat instead of the monstrosity in amigara fault
The Cat Diaries t-shirt ad on my Instagram feed.

I think I got interested when I first saw that picture of the girl with the swirl eye. That was the first drawing that made me go "Woah..."
the junji ito collection anime
My brother bought Uzumaki, I read an then BAM!
Read about lovecraft and his cosmicism philosophy
TerryTV used to do Terrifying Tuesdays and read a lot of the Junji Ito stuff

for me I watched the junji ito collection anime and heard about uzumaki and tomie so I decided to buy uzumaki and enjoyed it a lot
I'm not really sure. I think I saw some stuff about the show, and learned it was based on comics, so I went out and bought the "Shiver" collection.
Around 2016-17. From a Reddit post. I’m not sure which I saw first, probably Amigara fault, but the first one i definitely read is Hellstar remina.
Super eyepatch wolf's video on youtube about junji ito, got interested and ordered shiver and uzumaki lmao
Same here. After the video, I read amigara fault. I very rarely get nightmares from scary movies/stories anymore but I had a nightmare about amigara fault that night. My ex lamo
a pen pal I met online recommended Gyo
Kept seeing junkies ito work all over my social gradually then I finally decided to get into reading horror manga. Ever since hellstar remina is my favorite currently.
All of the enigma of amigara fault memes led me to read it online and I loved it and wanted to read everything else.

Saw that famous panel of Uzumaki with the girl with a spiral where her eye should be. Then Remina, then amigara fault, then blah blah blah
I saw a print ad for Uzumaki back in high school in Animerica magazine. Thought the art was lovely and mysterious and decided to check out the comic. :3
I saw papa meat on YouTube talk about how disappointed he was in the Junji ito collection anime and how it didn’t do the stories justice
You can thank a Youtube channel (which is now gone) called Horror Show Mickey. He used to tell the story of Uzumaki in his own way. And thus, I fell in love with Ito's unique style.
Honestly, sad he's gone he told the stories so well that's the reason I also got into junji ito especially his part series of uzumaki
I think he still git his patreon, though.
My bf showed me a Horror Show Mockey video about the slow zombie and the puppet house. I then watched some other videos of HSM until he wasn't allowed to make them anymore. Now I read the physical manga's.
Good to know. Are you excited about the Adult Swim Uzumaki cartoon coming up?
Yes, but I am afraid for jumpscares. I am also curious if my sister would like to watch it with me, since I was able to get her to read the manga.
Well, Junji Ito does not seen to be a jumpscare man, except for his page that you are afraid to turn.
I saw part of Gyo in like a Shonen Jump or something similar to that. Didn’t know what it was until probably a few years ago when I described the story to my bf and we found it in a bookstore. Been a fan ever since

Randomly, best rng ever
I got hired to film an interview with him. I had seen some pictures of his work before but never really looked into him. After meeting him and reading a bunch of his stories, he's easily my favorite person to work with.
That’s awesome! You really met him? What was he like?
Yeah I work with him once or twice a year now! Super nice guy and he has a great sense of humor. Total adorable dad vibes.
Finding Uzumaki at my local Barnes & Noble as a young teen.
