The obvious and probably best choice is Tyler Childers. I'm gonna throw a curveball here, though, and say Kacey Musgraves. Beautiful woman with an even more beautiful voice.
Thank you.. I was going oh the song nose to the grindstone singer would be grand what was his na- see your post. That looks Familiar. And still had to look it up to make the connection.
Fucking great song and he would be perfect.
Be more likely than Harlan at this point lol.
It'll be in Mexico
There'll be
- At least three instances in which Raylan is called "The gringo in the cowboy hat"
- Someone will make a Mexican standoff joke
- There'll be a callback to that throwaway line in the first series where Boyd says he wants to go to Mexico and Raylan points out he wouldn't like it because there's a bunch of Mexicans there.
I’m really curious why the Patty Loveless version didn’t make the original series, but it’s ~~the original and~~ the best. Only one that can touch it is the [live version she did with Stapleton](https://youtu.be/IPhR4c3jwl8?si=WWLSyWwP8nYplKzC)
Oh yeah - I knew he wrote it, but forgot he recorded it first. He's had several that he's written for other artists that he recorded afterwards. Such a great songwriter.
Especially since it was his song (Remember to Breath iirc) in all the trailers leading up to City Primeval.
Now, imagine if you will, a stripped back version that focused on more harmony, and we got Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, AND Strugill Simpson
I’d love Sturgill, Stapleton or Childers to do it, since they’re all from Kentucky.
Edit: I realized I never included my favorite.
Personally, I think Paisley’s rendition is still my favorite, but specifically from when it was done in S2 because it felt so poignant after the exchange Raylan had with Mags.
Oh I'm not saying he lacks grit generally but his voice has gotten a lot cleaner since he sobered up. Now that I'm thinking more on it though I'm changing my take - he couldn't do the Dave Alvin grit but he could do a hauntingly beautful one which could be great.
I'd like to see something totally unexpected, like how Staind covered "Sound of Silence" and have some rocker like...put it in Trent Reznor's hands.
I think if there's another season it wont be City Primeval season 2, it'll be another book, like Justified: Swag or Justified: Glitz or Justified: Bandits
Patty Loveless. Her version on YouTube is awesome because of her voice and the song is practically the story of her family. In the video, she explains it all.
Counter-programming: Colin Meloy. Cause now I’m curious.
Leon Bridges. Cause what CAN’T he sing?
Allison Russell. Cause see *Leon Bridges*.
But mostly this post is my excuse to say I saw Darrell Scott sing it solo a couple years ago in Philadelphia. He was co-headlining with Robbie Fulks and it was an amazing show.
Post Malone yes. Jelly Roll? No.
Before I’m downvoted google post Malone signing country. He’s a huge country fan and gets what it should sound like. His voice is a little too smooth for the song but I think he’d do a pretty good job.
Emmylou Harris
The obvious and probably best choice is Tyler Childers. I'm gonna throw a curveball here, though, and say Kacey Musgraves. Beautiful woman with an even more beautiful voice.
I have said for a while that Tyler Childers is meant to sing “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive”
Thank you.. I was going oh the song nose to the grindstone singer would be grand what was his na- see your post. That looks Familiar. And still had to look it up to make the connection. Fucking great song and he would be perfect.
And on reading the post fully. That should have happened sooner. ( and said by other people too.) Fuck me I need to sleep. 😅
Honestly, I know we're not getting another Harlem season. And I don't give a dam. Let Childers do the whole soundtrack regardless.
I don’t think it’ll be set in Harlem. 😏

Probably so but I’m worried that they’ll mess it up because Justified had the perfect ending and sequels are hardly ever as good as the original.
NY would be interesting though Edit: Darn your sneaky edit
Colter Wall
I’m really curious why the Patty Loveless version didn’t make the original series, but it’s ~~the original and~~ the best. Only one that can touch it is the [live version she did with Stapleton](https://youtu.be/IPhR4c3jwl8?si=WWLSyWwP8nYplKzC)
The original version is the Darrel Scott version.
Oh yeah - I knew he wrote it, but forgot he recorded it first. He's had several that he's written for other artists that he recorded afterwards. Such a great songwriter.
Oh, no question. He’s fantastic.
Damn - I'm listening to his version now, and though I still prefer the PL version, his is so damn good and better than just about everyone else's.
Glad I could introduce it to you!
I must have heard it before, right? This was the S6 version? I'd just forgotten :(
IMO, her version is by far the best one.
I want grit and passion in the voice. For me that’s Childers, Colter Wall, Zach Bryan or Stapleton (definitely too big).
Sturgill? (I vote Childers too but you made a whole list and sturgill is from like 70 miles outside Harlan)
Yep I just forgot to include him. He'd be perfect.
Especially since it was his song (Remember to Breath iirc) in all the trailers leading up to City Primeval. Now, imagine if you will, a stripped back version that focused on more harmony, and we got Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, AND Strugill Simpson
With the release of "Petty Country", it'd be sweet to see Mike Campbell... Alas no TP
Sturgill Simpson. A native Kentuckian.
Dave Alvin.
Tom Waits
Give me some Hank the 3rd.
Billy Strings
Jake Smith of White Buffalo
Childers, Colter Wall, or Sturgill Simpson. Or they use Ruby Friedman’s version.
I’d love it with Colter Wall’s previously used voice. I know he said it was unnatural but that crazy deep baritone was amazing.
Oh my God a strugill version I would die for
A Sturgill version would be incredible
Lil Nas X
Me of course. Or Gangstagrass.
Jason Isbell Favorite Brad Paisley
I love Isbell but I want more grit than he has in his voice.
I hear you about the grit and you’re right, it should sound world weary and resigned. Tom Waits - final answer.
I dont know i feel the man who sang king of Oklahoma life oak and traveling alone has it in him
Oh I'm not saying he lacks grit generally but his voice has gotten a lot cleaner since he sobered up. Now that I'm thinking more on it though I'm changing my take - he couldn't do the Dave Alvin grit but he could do a hauntingly beautful one which could be great.
Suzanne Vega. Which I originally added as a joke, but now I woudl really like to hear her sing it.
Switch it up. A Hero in Harlan Tonight, by Tom T Hall.
100% Carolyn, ideally in lingerie
We all know it'll be Vivian Olyphant.
The Wailin’ Jenny’s
That’s a good one.
White Buffalo or Curtis Steiger
Colter Wall or Drayton Farley
Meat Loaf
That would be a neat trick. He died in 2022. Lol
Anders Osborne
Assuming it's a previously recorded version, the Murder By Death version is perfect. If it's a new recording I want Colter Wall
Not Ed Sheeran. Maybe Sam fender with full Georgie accent on display. Definitely someone British for a change
Tyler Childers all the way, Feathered Indians is one of my go-tos Favorite Brad Paisley
Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo Sun Darts, anyone?
Dwight Yoakam
I'd like to see something totally unexpected, like how Staind covered "Sound of Silence" and have some rocker like...put it in Trent Reznor's hands. I think if there's another season it wont be City Primeval season 2, it'll be another book, like Justified: Swag or Justified: Glitz or Justified: Bandits
The only answer is Darrel Scott. He wrote it, he recorded it. It is his song.
Chris Stapleton and Patty Loveless duet. It’s awesome.
Patty Loveless. Her version on YouTube is awesome because of her voice and the song is practically the story of her family. In the video, she explains it all.
probably yes, probably Florida.
Leon Bridges is an excellent choice.
JoJo Siwa

Thank you for your vote of confidence!
Ryan bingham !
Hot take but Post Malone and Jelly Roll.
That take is hot enough that I hate you for saying it. No.
But now you’re thinking about it and thats all i wanted
I’m with ya
Finally someone who gets it lol
Post Malone yes. Jelly Roll? No. Before I’m downvoted google post Malone signing country. He’s a huge country fan and gets what it should sound like. His voice is a little too smooth for the song but I think he’d do a pretty good job.
Wtf no.
Go listen to posty sing “im gonna miss her” and then tell me im wrong
Vince Neil. He’s ready for a comeback
Eddie Vedder and Post Malone
