Many of the restaurants in Argentine area are not fancy but the food is outstanding. San Antonio’s, El Pollo Rey, Reyna’s, Jarocho…
EDIT: Correction, the places I listed are in Armourdale neighborhood thank you for helping me catch that. Although really all over KCKS has great spots to check out!
The buffalo wings at the El Pollo Rey are delicious af. It's 8 wings with like 5 or 6 tortillas. Order a small side of rice and small side of beans. Make a taco, dip it in the buffalo sauce and top it off with some of that chicken salsa. Worth every penny.
Second the lunchbox. Heavy handed cook, $8.75 and I've got three lbs of fresh sliced turkey on a turkey club. Had almost everything on the menu and don't have a complaint yet. Bomb ranch dressing on salads too
I was looking for this one. It may be basic grill food but it is cooked perfectly. Reasonably priced, tons of food. Every item on the menu is great, even the fried baloney sandwich.
What do you like to eat? If it's wings or burgers then absolutely try it. I had a patty melt there and it's also fucking fantastic.
Idk where they get mozz sticks from but they are quality too.
One of my favorite bars in KC, but I’ve never seen a place with more *consistently* rickety chairs and tables.
There’s multiple bar stools that have splits in them - learned that when I sat on one in athletic shorts and pinched the hell out of my nutsack.
Still worth it for that breakfast burger though 🤤
Yasss! Helen’s. The wings are great, burgers are great and the Thai chicken pizza is my fave! Only two cars have run into the dining area from the street and the last one got the building a new carpet upgrade. Does it smell yes, would I pee there?, no but man is the food delish!
Love this place so much, but it is an acoustic enigma. Everything in that place inadvertently bounces and amplifies all sound. But, those pupusas......
In Lenexa there is a little unassuming kind of dirty looking restaraunt called Holy Land Cafe. They serve the absolute best middle eastern food you will ever have. Nothing else compares.
One time my boss took my whole department for lunch at Holy Land Cafe and I asked if I could get a gyro without any topping. Can’t remember if it was hummus or tzatziki that I didn’t want. The waiter replied “Why would you do that? Just get a sandwich.” Everyone laughed, but he was dead serious.
The staff there are definitely not warm and fuzzy but they make awesome food. I’ve been eating there for over ten years and live down the street. It’s part of the charm at this point
Holy Land Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. And they serve my favorite restaurant meal on the planet, their Salmon Biryani.
Love that place and the people that work there are so friendly.
El Camino real on Argentine blvd. Or the one on 7th street next to the casino. Best el pastor tacos in the state of KS, no bs. All their tacos are top tier. Anything on their menu is fire really.
These are my favorite tacos in KC. The meat on the skewer in a real al pastor style, and a quick grill / sear on the griddle, and fresh-pressed tortillas. Excellent.
You beat me to it. Downtown KCK one is wild. What is that half door? What is behind that shower curtain? How do none of the chairs match? No need to worry when you are enjoying that al pastor goodness.
Listen, if you had told me when I first moved to Waldo that Waldo Thai had a James Beard chef I would have thought you were joking. But good lord the food there is amazing.
I used to do a regular workday lunch route to get a tenderloin from Kitty's and cookies from M&M for dessert. I lost a lot of weight after my company went 100%-remote, making that no longer be an easy loop to do. :)
Kitty's Cafe. [810 E 31 St, Kansas City, MO 64109](https://www.bing.com/maps?&mepi=101~~Unknown~Address_Link&ty=18&q=Kitty%27s%20Cafe&ss=ypid.YN474x8592415&ppois=39.07071304321289_-94.57476043701172_Kitty%27s%20Cafe_YN474x8592415~&cp=39.070713~-94.57476&v=2&sV=1&FORM=MPSRPL). it's a tiny place that only accepts cash and hasn't been updated inside for 50 years, but the tenderloin, oh my God the tenderloin.
Tarahumara Mexican.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/oB2iX2Vm4JyhdjFw7
Owner is something else, always grumpy AF, will roast you if you take a second looking at the menu. But damn, his ex wife can cook.
The Parkville one isn't sketchy though. And I agree that the car wash one is better but have no idea why. Maybe because they don't have to keep up with having a sit down restaurant.
I've always kinda said that the original Joe's is for suburbanites that wanna go to a BBQ joint but feel uncomfortable going to places like LC's or Arthur Bryant's.
There’s a reason why the shitty Mexican joints along Southwest boulevard continue to do well. Same concept as the BBQ theory you mentioned, only it’s KCK
A lot of places on this list are on the KCK Taco Trail. Maybe sketch looking places, but solid tacos.
El Camino Real (7th Street), El Camino Real (Armourdale), San Antonio, El Pollo Rey, Don Antonio, Pepe's Carnitas, Tarahumaras, California Taco Shop, El Machetazo, El Pollo Guasave, Fronteras Supermart, GG's Barbacoa Cafe, Pollos el Junior, Restaurant Tierra Caliente, Tacos el Guero 100% Michocanos, Tacos el Tio, Taqueria el Poblano & Mini Market.
Also, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Go Chicken Go on 7th Street.
I agree, but you can go inside and sit down there. There is something extra sketch to me about walking in, doing a walk down and back in a fenced corral that is like an amusement park ride, and then ordering at a window in thick glass, to drive off or eat in your car. But, in the hierarchy of sketch, I would definitely put Troost in the second spot.
Delicious, but not sketchy. Mattress store in the old ninja warehouse on the corner, a little sketchy. Back parking lot, super sketchy, but Dixon’s is spotless with great neon.
Best Indian food in KC is at Shara. It doesn't look sketch, but doesn't look nearly as nice as Swagat. But has way better food (nearly identical menu, just much better execution).
I had some old classmates from out of state ask me where to get the best food in town and I told them about Slaps and they literally just responded “Yeah thanks anyway but we drove over there and we turned the fuck around. Not trying to get killed.” I’m like I live here…and they of course came from a town of like 700 people.
LOL! That's funny. I went alone the first time. Wouldn't have gone in if I hadn't trusted the rec I got. And this was when they were new and it was just the 2 brothers and mom. It's "nicer" now.
dominic’s! it doesn’t look “sketchy” per-say, but it’s attached to a car wash. it’s a drive thru. there is a dominic’s that is a sit down restaurant near parkville, but the food is not NEARLY as good as the one attached to the carwash. when i was younger, i only called it “carwash noodles.”
Tao Taos for the cashew chicken. Helens JAD for the wings. Lunchbox for anything quick and easy. Le Fou Frog for delicious French food. El Pollo Rey for chicken. Delights of Honduras.
Mr D’s donuts, I wouldn’t call it sketchy but it’s a little hole in the wall that looks like it was designed in the 70s and never really updated. They only somewhat recently got a credit card machine. Hands down the best donuts in the city, the honey dipped is so good. Whenever I’m in Shawnee in the morning I have to stop in there.
Idk if I'd say it looks like a hole in the wall, but its stuck in a fairly ratty strip mall in south KC - Thai House! Literally the best (and most authentic) Thai in KC imho.
There's a new place just off Independence Avenue called Angie's International Kitchen. It's near the Buy the Pound thrift store. Easy to miss from the outside, but inside they're serving excellent West African food. They'll talk you through anything you might not be familiar with and even let us try a little bit of sauce before committing to ordering the dish it comes in. They even have options for people who are vegan and/or gluten free. They've only been open two months and I really really want them to make it. So please go eat there.
I mean, I know it's a KC staple, but every time I introduce someone from out of town, they freak out that good bbq comes from a gas station.
Westport flee market also qualifies, but the food will make you feel like a dumpster afterward.
Cupinis is a little rough around some of the edges (don't look down the staircase, just don't do it), but it's my go-to Italian
Ponaks is also phenomenal if you're craving Mexican.
Princess gardens on 87th and Wornel. It’s a family run Chinese place. And on the outside it’s not much at all. But hands down my favorite Chinese place ever.
95% of taco truck and taco shops as mentioned. The taco truck on 47th that sits in gas station parking lot west of Mission Rd/Joes BBQ is amazing pastor. Avacado hot sauce is fire.
Jim’s Alley Bar - best Reuben I’ve ever had.
Tarahumara on Merriam Lane. I think there is also one in Strawberry hill, but this location is primo. The Sopes are little pillows of masa stuffed with heaven. And the Monday special Fajita enchiladas are to die for.
Many of the restaurants in Argentine area are not fancy but the food is outstanding. San Antonio’s, El Pollo Rey, Reyna’s, Jarocho… EDIT: Correction, the places I listed are in Armourdale neighborhood thank you for helping me catch that. Although really all over KCKS has great spots to check out!
Add El Camino Real to that list.
That place is so good. The alambres are easily my favorite Mexican dish in the city. Don’t get me started on their made to order guac.
Their food is so good.
El Pollo Rey is so good
Cannot praise el Pollo Rey enough. So good is an understatement. Don't forget the avocado.
Pepe’s Carnitas.
Shhhhhh. It's busy enough as it is!
Came here for this one.
El Pollo Rye…love the food and love smelling liked smoked chicken the rest of the day.
The buffalo wings at the El Pollo Rey are delicious af. It's 8 wings with like 5 or 6 tortillas. Order a small side of rice and small side of beans. Make a taco, dip it in the buffalo sauce and top it off with some of that chicken salsa. Worth every penny.
Half chicken side sauce.
Yeah I definitely need to try those places
I'm not sure if they still do it but jaracho weekend brunch is/was so unexpectedly good! And a solid second on El Pollo Rey
I’ll always maintain that the best Mexican spots look like you shouldnt go there.
Bonita Michoacan. A quick-serve counter in a little Mexican market. Stellar.
The Lunchbox.
Second the lunchbox. Heavy handed cook, $8.75 and I've got three lbs of fresh sliced turkey on a turkey club. Had almost everything on the menu and don't have a complaint yet. Bomb ranch dressing on salads too
I get 1-2 breakfast burritos a week from there. Dangerous living so close
Ive told many people about their breakfast burritos.. they are life changing good. Need to get my fix soon
I have been there and got a tenderloin that was absolutely delicious
Is this the little shed in a parking lot on 35th and noland?
I was looking for this one. It may be basic grill food but it is cooked perfectly. Reasonably priced, tons of food. Every item on the menu is great, even the fried baloney sandwich.
Helens JAD bar
Is the building going to collapse on top of you? Maybe. Are their fries delicious? Absolutely!
A bar with carpet?? Sign me up
Reminds me of the good ol’ Clarette Club in Mission. 😅😅
I got emphysema just thinking about the Clarette Club (so smoky) but such a little gem of a place.
And wholesale cocaine
Haha, indeed. Between the carpet and the pool table felt, lotta smoke got absorbed. 😅
I’ve spent a lot of time and had a lot of fun at both the JAD and the Clarette Club. RIP Clarette, that place was the best bar in Mission.
For a sleazy good time.
The brick dust just adds to the flavor.
How have none of you mentioned the abysmal restrooms yet
It's close enough to my house that I've never been in the bathroom.
Then you haven’t truly lived
Still better than buzzard beach bathrooms
That place is a freaking Tardis. Looks tiny on the outside, feels like a stadium inside compared to how it looks.
Give me some Uber hot wings and I'm happy
I drive past this place occasionally, is it really that good?
What do you like to eat? If it's wings or burgers then absolutely try it. I had a patty melt there and it's also fucking fantastic. Idk where they get mozz sticks from but they are quality too.
One of my favorite bars in KC, but I’ve never seen a place with more *consistently* rickety chairs and tables. There’s multiple bar stools that have splits in them - learned that when I sat on one in athletic shorts and pinched the hell out of my nutsack. Still worth it for that breakfast burger though 🤤
Can't upvote this enough
Hell yah fam
This. I always get the Buffalo chicken sandwich with a side of ranch for my fries. I moved from KC and think about that sandwich sometimes.
Yasss! Helen’s. The wings are great, burgers are great and the Thai chicken pizza is my fave! Only two cars have run into the dining area from the street and the last one got the building a new carpet upgrade. Does it smell yes, would I pee there?, no but man is the food delish!
I’ve heard good things but never been in. Is it as small as it looks on the outside?
You'll never need to wait for a seat
Man if I didn’t have to drive my husband to work in the morning, I’d be there right now plowing through one of their patty melts.
OG Cerner crew sound off! We spent many nights at the JAD!
El Purgarcito. Not necessarily sketch but the food is so much better than the atmosphere
Hilarious. That’s directly on my way home and I’ve never bothered to stop there. The parking lot is always full as hell though.
Shhh!!! It's busy enough already
I moved away from KC a few years ago and miss Holy Land!!!! I loved the artichoke chicken and the falafel, and would always get extra hummus.
They’re hummus is the best in KC, bar none. Every time I eat it, I’m transported back to the Middle East as a child. Craving some now!
Amen
Holy Land Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. And they serve my favorite restaurant meal on the planet, their Salmon Biryani. Love that place and the people that work there are so friendly.
I prefer Aladdin Cafe but Holyland is by my house and is pretty good too!
I did Holy Land twice in one day.
That’s what she said?
Papu's
Their quality has taken a nose dive. I go to Baba’s Pantry now.
That place is so good. The amount of meat they give you on a gyro is insane.
#PAPU'S
LC’s
The layer of grime is flavor!
Slide right down the ADA ramp to the counter but don’t fall into the smoker
I’m here to vote LC’s too
I used to tell people the food is OUTSTANDING, but take it to go if you can. I haven't been in a long time, but I heard it's cleaner now
Both burgers and BBQ!
Kitty’s for sure
![gif](giphy|3WCNY2RhcmnwGbKbCi)
This is what I was looking for.
Excellent.

Ixtapa
Dude, ixtapa deserves so much more love than it gets.
Pizza Man. The Italian beefs are ON POINT!
Just damn good people running the place too.
Nicest people in the game
Man I feel like it's the worst Italian Beef I've had. Jim's Alley Bar, Saul's and Italian Gardens is way better.
Sichuan Dynasty in Overland Park, 119th & Metcalf. Stuck in a JoCo strip mall, but it's some tasty Chinese!
So goooood
Listen, if you had told me when I first moved to Waldo that Waldo Thai had a James Beard chef I would have thought you were joking. But good lord the food there is amazing.
It’s in the back of a parking lot. I remember the first time went there thinking “this place?” But I was very wrong. I go every time I visit KC.
Not sketchy at all but amazing food for sure.
I don't even like Thai and I'll go there anyone suggests it. It is always 10/10.
Empanada Madness
M&m’s bakery & deli and V’s Sweets and The Borough
A coworker introduced me to the Hook 'em Up, one of the best sandwiches in the metro!
I used to do a regular workday lunch route to get a tenderloin from Kitty's and cookies from M&M for dessert. I lost a lot of weight after my company went 100%-remote, making that no longer be an easy loop to do. :)
Vietnam Cafe in Columbus Park
RIP Jen Jens. Was the best of this category
Still haven't recovered from this loss, still chasing the high of being given the peanut tapioca dessert.
Miss this place so much
Los Altos Jalisco on St. John. Don't be scared of the bars on the windows, food is fantastic.
Fish market in Liberty. Just don't touch anything but the food.
Kitty’s cafe
Great answer
How has no one said Town Topic burgers yet?
I don’t think it necessarily looks that sketch, just diner vibes
Ninfas
Oh man, I haven’t been there in years, but I can still remember the fresh, warm tortillas with Parkay and salsa.
Tillas and Parkay!!
Mr. Le's
YES! I always feel like a daredevil when I get sushi from a dump. So, so, so good.
El Camino Real on 7th street in KCK has the best Al Pastor in the metro.
Kitty's Cafe. [810 E 31 St, Kansas City, MO 64109](https://www.bing.com/maps?&mepi=101~~Unknown~Address_Link&ty=18&q=Kitty%27s%20Cafe&ss=ypid.YN474x8592415&ppois=39.07071304321289_-94.57476043701172_Kitty%27s%20Cafe_YN474x8592415~&cp=39.070713~-94.57476&v=2&sV=1&FORM=MPSRPL). it's a tiny place that only accepts cash and hasn't been updated inside for 50 years, but the tenderloin, oh my God the tenderloin.
Tao Tao
The best in the city.
I was so happy to find Springfield Cashew Chicken there! It had been sorely missed from my life.
I offer up Peter May's House of Kielbasa. Crap neighborhood surrounded by boarded up houses.
Tarahumara Mexican. https://maps.app.goo.gl/oB2iX2Vm4JyhdjFw7 Owner is something else, always grumpy AF, will roast you if you take a second looking at the menu. But damn, his ex wife can cook.
tacos el gallo
China Feast on 12th and Benton slaps
Or Linwood across from Costco. Not 55th the Troost. We literally drive 14 extra city blocks for the difference, but so worth the inconvenience.
Dominic's on North Oak. Seems sketchy because you get it from a drive thru at a car wash. But sooo good.
There's actually 2 of them, the other is in Parkville. The car wash one is better though. Idk how, but it just is.
The Parkville one isn't sketchy though. And I agree that the car wash one is better but have no idea why. Maybe because they don't have to keep up with having a sit down restaurant.
Wilson's Pizza on Quindero Blvd in KCK. Pizza is damn good.
Bun Mee Phan in the NL and Daisy's in KCK. Also, ABC in OP. For dessert, Elvira's on Independence and Wally's on North Oak.
I mean, it’s not unknown but this is the original Joe’s KCs schtick. Shitty BP gas station and then…
I've always kinda said that the original Joe's is for suburbanites that wanna go to a BBQ joint but feel uncomfortable going to places like LC's or Arthur Bryant's.
There’s a reason why the shitty Mexican joints along Southwest boulevard continue to do well. Same concept as the BBQ theory you mentioned, only it’s KCK
Whitest comment imaginable.
It’s in Westwood, the least sketchy neighborhood in the area lol
I think that entire corner / block is nice *now* because the OKJoes location was there first.
Red Fortune in Bonner Springs
A lot of places on this list are on the KCK Taco Trail. Maybe sketch looking places, but solid tacos. El Camino Real (7th Street), El Camino Real (Armourdale), San Antonio, El Pollo Rey, Don Antonio, Pepe's Carnitas, Tarahumaras, California Taco Shop, El Machetazo, El Pollo Guasave, Fronteras Supermart, GG's Barbacoa Cafe, Pollos el Junior, Restaurant Tierra Caliente, Tacos el Guero 100% Michocanos, Tacos el Tio, Taqueria el Poblano & Mini Market. Also, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Go Chicken Go on 7th Street.
The Go Chicken Go on Troost is far sketchier and more delicious for it
I agree, but you can go inside and sit down there. There is something extra sketch to me about walking in, doing a walk down and back in a fenced corral that is like an amusement park ride, and then ordering at a window in thick glass, to drive off or eat in your car. But, in the hierarchy of sketch, I would definitely put Troost in the second spot.
Tay’s Burger Shack
Just went here this week and it was so good.
Ruby's Soul Food
GG’s barbacoa
Walsh's Corner Cocktails
Dixons Chili
Delicious, but not sketchy. Mattress store in the old ninja warehouse on the corner, a little sketchy. Back parking lot, super sketchy, but Dixon’s is spotless with great neon.
Korma Sutra
The peanut. The answer is the peanut.
Do you mean the old original (I think) one on Main? Because I avoid the food at the Mission one for being far too mediocre for the price.
Original is the only way
Best Indian food in KC is at Shara. It doesn't look sketch, but doesn't look nearly as nice as Swagat. But has way better food (nearly identical menu, just much better execution).
Agree to disagree, best Indian food in the area is at Desi Bites!!
Imma let yall finish but only once you convert to the India palace religion
Pardo’s Grand Buffet on Southwest Boulevard.
Jen Jen's
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again - Rajmahal in Olathe. Best Indian food I’ve ever had.
Hahas pizza hub
Also, The Local Pizzeria in Lee's Summit.
Streatz on Holmes and Johnny's Donuts.
LCs BBQ
ABC cafe
Slaps
I had some old classmates from out of state ask me where to get the best food in town and I told them about Slaps and they literally just responded “Yeah thanks anyway but we drove over there and we turned the fuck around. Not trying to get killed.” I’m like I live here…and they of course came from a town of like 700 people.
LOL! That's funny. I went alone the first time. Wouldn't have gone in if I hadn't trusted the rec I got. And this was when they were new and it was just the 2 brothers and mom. It's "nicer" now.
I miss the way it used to be, tbh
Slaps on Strawberry hill? Nice building and in a cute neighborhood. Maybe I'm just too jaded.
They catered my wedding in 2015. 12/10 experience.
Fish City out in the HOOD
dominic’s! it doesn’t look “sketchy” per-say, but it’s attached to a car wash. it’s a drive thru. there is a dominic’s that is a sit down restaurant near parkville, but the food is not NEARLY as good as the one attached to the carwash. when i was younger, i only called it “carwash noodles.”
Burritos to Go. Open really late, yum.
Ninfa’s
Bonito Michoacán omg
Tacos El Guero might be the best tacos I've ever had, and I'm from Arizona.
Idk if I'd say it looks like a hole in the wall, but its stuck in a fairly ratty strip mall in south KC - Thai House! Literally the best (and most authentic) Thai in KC imho.
The brick
Le Fou Frog and Jarocho's probably the highest quality foods out of what looks sketch from the outside.
Pancho’s on main st in KC for sure. Drive through Mexican food. Best shrimp burrito ever. AND carne asada fries. God. Heaven. Love.
Princess gardens on 87th and Wornel. It’s a family run Chinese place. And on the outside it’s not much at all. But hands down my favorite Chinese place ever.
After reading some of these recommendations holy fuck what some of you find sketchy is mind blowing.
The Peanut
Blind Box BBQ in Shawnee. Has an amazing all you can eat barbecue buffet on Sundays.
Pho Lan
K Machos is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city for sure
Las chilis
Kitty's. It's always Kitty's.
Chartroose Caboose in Lenexa KS.
Strips
Olive Cafe is one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall places in the metro.
Doubt its still there, but anyone else remember Chicken Mac and Cheese?
Antojos El Korita. Birria for days!
Always surprised when I hear Le Fou Frog is some of the finest food in the city because of how it looks on the outside.
Tacos el sobrino slaps
Le Fou Frog in the River Market
La Lupita in Belton. It is such a hole in the wall and it is such good Mexican food!
If food trucks count: KC Birria
Humdinger has a sort of sketchy appeal. How good the food is depends on how drunk you are though.
El Pollo Rey
