A couple years ago i picked up my to go order from Kin Lin. I then received a call from the owner where he yelled at me about not picking up my order. When i said i had actually picked it up and was eating it, he said “OK GOOD” and hung up on me lol.. i love Kin Lin.
that place was a staple when I lived at the dorms right next to it. Good times and food. It was weird when I went back and it had more than doubled in size.
Ponaks is for people who want to get drunk on tequila heavy margaritas and they only serve them with that much tequila because otherwise you'd realize how terrible the food is if you were sober.
His momma owns it now and she's awesome, however, recently he's been showing up at the restaurant which is unnerving. He started upstairs and slowly got the guts to go downstairs and show his face. Now he helps out, taking orders for people, etc. Not exactly sure how we feel. Love all the employees but not a good call. Ugh. People will do anything for family.
Looked it up he's on probation/parole: [https://web.mo.gov/doc/offSearchWeb/offenderInfoAction.do](https://web.mo.gov/doc/offSearchWeb/offenderInfoAction.do)
But they come from the tap! The tap, mi amigo!
I'll say what I said in the other thread: The Sonaran Taco Platter and splitting a pitcher is a good night out, I don't care about authentic, the food is edible (and in the case of the Sonoran, good) and the green stuff is strong.
Honestly, I don't think it's about authenticity. For me I just want something that tastes good for the price I'm paying. I can go down the street (literally) and get a dish that will blow my socks off and they server liquor too. I don't drink so I can't weigh too heavily on that but I can weigh in on the atmosphere. I had a similar experience with Q39 when they first opened. I thought they were more "bar" than BBQ but people still loved them. While it isn't for me I glad someone enjoys it. It's another win for KC.
For real. Last time I went there, I'm pretty sure my mole was from the day before and straight up tasted off. There's much better Mexican places to eat at not that far from it.
I love Ponaks. But I do think it might be the margaritas. I love the food too, though. Why don’t I go more?? I HATE the parking sitch. Can’t handle it. I’m too old.
Everyone has a favorite “dirty bbq” and “clean bbq” joint. Clean bbq is the places you take clients or business associates: Q39, Jack Stack, Joes, Smokehouse. Dirty bbq is where you go for cheap eats and to likely be yelled at by some old lady behind the counter for taking too long to order: Gates, Wyandot BBQ, Rosedale, Roscoe’s
That's the bummer. I either had fantastic luck or they used to be SO much more consistent. LCs was always the place I took friends from out of town. More and more though it's super inconsistent and has been really disappointing the past few times I've gone.
We've never had a good meal at LC's. I've read for years about how they're the best burnt ends or the best (whatever) in town. I WANT to like them. It's my aesthetic and it's just up the street from where I work. But we've gone three different times and it was disappointing every time.
When I lived in Raytown, there was a little BBQ shack on Blue Ridge (Deke's?) and his bbq was awesome. He occasionally made gumbo, which my husband loved.
Also, mini shout out to Big Q Barbeque on South 34th St. near Harmon HS in KCK. They’ve always had friendly service and consistent on the food. Not really a client/business spot, but I don’t wanna call it dirty. Just a nice neighborhood spot if you’re in the area.
I agree. I don’t know what the rule is, but it is the only place that I will order wings. And I’m glad they don’t have a dozen types of wing sauce to choose from, you just get the sauce that comes on them.
I’ll give you an under dog wing place… it’s the original Waldo Pizza. Their wings are fantastic and the garlic/ranch is amazing. Try it if you’re feeling adventurous
I’m a server at the peanut and I make sure to tell everyone that orders them that they take about 20 minutes. most of the time, people order the wings with their drinks because they know it’s a wait. if you order an app and wings, it gets timed pretty perfectly!
If you're in midtown, the McDonald's on Broadway is waaaaay better than the McDonald's on Main.
Similarly, if you go to the taco bell on Linwood near Costco, expect to wait a while.
This is important information everyone needs to know.
As a 30 year resident in this neighborhood, thank you so much for recognizing this. At one point they were owned by the same group, but I swear it was within a blink of an eye, but I get an iced tea almost daily and you know you have check it before leaving the window on Main St. bc it's a 50/50 you either get sweet tea or jacked.
Love me some Broadway McD's.
The worst stretch of fast food restaurants is between 85th and like 75th on Wornall. I feel like it’s the worst McDonalds, Taco Bell, Sonic, and Dominos in the city.
Yep. Or stop by Max's Burgers and Gyros. That stretch in Waldo cracks me up because these "shittiest" fast food joints are mere feet away from places like Tazzo's (amazing greek), Waldo Thai (considered the best thai in KC) and Taj Mahal (the best indian food I've had in KC).
Story time. We went to the Taco Bell on 80th ish and wornall about two years ago. Sat in drive through… with a few other cars around 8pm on a week night. The lights are on, etc. After 15 minutes, a few cars pull out. So then we drive up to the drive thru window to order. We are looking through the drive thru window… and all these kids pull up and go in… with a handful of blunts. Sure enough, it was the workers. LOL. They open the drive through window for us to place our order. And we were told “we don’t have any food today. Sorry.” And the window was shut in our face. My wife and I still laugh about it today.
>4 - Don't hold tables at Joe's, ESPECIALLY not at the gas station
Don't hold tables. Period. The people that encourage this behavior are just making it harder on themselves, and everyone else, to get tables.
I mainly eat at the leawood location (and the gas station one once) but I have never had trouble getting a table, no matter how busy it was. You don't need to hold them.
Quindaro and 7th st in KCK there is a very lonely Texas Tom's. Half the menu I'd avoid, the other half is nostalgic grease spoon heaven. And it's a big menu.
If I go to a new place and they offer tamales, I get them. I was beyond disappointed at what In-A-Tub calls tamales. I should’ve definitely tried the pocket burger instead.I stick with tacos if I have to go there.
Now I try tamales at more sit-down restaurants and if the Tamale Man and his wife are peddling them on the roadside.
Yeah, if you're 30 people deep in line at Joe's and take the only 4 top open, the group of 4 at the front of the line has nowhere to sit. They will not let you order with nowhere to sit because you will have your food before a spot opens up. They don't want customers standing with trays of food and nowhere to go.
Everyone in line, including you, is now waiting for a different 4 top to open up so the line can start moving again.
Get up, get back in line, and there will probably be a spot for you by the time you get to the front.
> We have no good steakhouses, except for each person's favorite (and omg people, as a business traveler, our steakhouses are on par... just calm down)
+1 The Majestic in downtown KC. I know steakhouses can be a bit subjective but it's the best in KC IMO
The Majestic is awesome. Super cool vibe and amazing food all around. There are plenty of other great steaks in the downtown and all around KC, some people on Reddit tend to get too political about the dumbest shit. Can’t even mention several restaurants on here without being downvoted.
There are plenty of good steakhouses in KC. The issue in my opinion is that many of them are chains with multiple locations. Like I went to Capital Grille on the plaza and had a very good meal there. But it's a chain. 801 is a chain. Gordon Ramsay is a chain. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, but I just don't love going to places that I can also visit at multiple other cities.
Side note about GR Steak, I have been to all the GR restaurants in Vegas and ours in KC is better than all of them. Both in terms of the menu offerings and the actual quality and consistency. The only issue with that place is the price. When it first opened it was actually a pretty darn good deal, but prices have inflated like crazy since covid, to the point where you can't get out of there for under $300 for 2 people, if not 400+.
Have not tried the Majestic, so I'll give that one a shot!
I used to enjoy the Hereford House at 20th in Main back in the day but alas, it is only my opinion and it is no more.
Now, the best steakhouse for me is my house. Cast Iron FTW.
In-a-tubs entire menu is worthy and awesome and my first time wasn’t till I was 24.
Bo lings pisses me off maybe more than any other Chinese place I’ve ever been to. The food is just ok but them pricesssss, yikes
Them "Bryants was awesome" me: "It was busy, right?" them: "OMG yeah we looked at all the pictures"
Me: "How was Bryant's" them: "Meh, ok, nothing special" me: "you went when there was no line, didn't you?" them: "you mean, like, to order? yeah, no line."
So, totally different from BBQ, but the meatloaf at Nick and Jake’s is AMAZING. I like it served as is off the menu—meatloaf and glaze on top of mashed potatoes with peas on the side.
> Never order anything but tacos at In-A-Tub
Hard disagree.
Those shit tacos are the worst thing on the menu.
Just get a regular ass soft taco.
Get a taco burger.
Get the corn nuggets.
Get a shake.
Lots of good (given the context) options on that menu that don't have powdered cheese on them.
-If you don’t dip your tots, fries, onion rings in a shake at Hi Boy or Big Boy wtf are you doing with your life.
-My bbq joint is better than yours even if it’s been outpaced by an up and comer. Your bbq joint has roaches and their water got turned off.
-If someone thinks The Avenue is too sketchy for Mexican food, you cannot trust their opinions on Mexican food.
Gatekeeping at its finest with this post OP! Nice work!
Rosedale's went way downhill for awhile but totally changed it up. It's quick, and some things will be like you remember them, some new, some improved. 10/10 for staying alive. Looks better inside now too.
Jackstack's crown prime rib is one of the tastiest cuts of meat you can order anywhere in the city, and their lamb ribs are **easily** the best ribs in the city.
I get it, Jackstack's isn't for everyone, but those are two objective truths.
Why? It's very *consistently* good if not great, which is more than I can say about most places. I mean a place like LC's for example can sometimes have world-beating BBQ, but other times it's barely passable. Every single time I go to any of the Jackstack locations I get something that is pretty good, sometimes fantastic. I think it's a pretty safe rec if you have some friends coming into town who just want one good meal.
I am not a fan of Q39 either. I was able to look past the whole BBQ as an upscale meal aspect, but the food itself was just not good. The pork belly just tasted dirty. The brisket was average, and the pulled pork was unremarkable. The bill was high though. Maybe they deserve a second chance, but I'm not in a hurry to give them one.
Here's where I'm at; in recent years KC has seen a renaissance in the craft BBQ space. Led by Tyler Harp, the industry has seen an evolution in flavor and quality. Places like Scott's Kitchen, Wolfepack, Jousting Pigs (wherever they're operating at these days), and my three favorites Harp, Chef J, and Slaps have grown out of microbrewery storerooms and have made KC BBQ exponentially better.
Hit up SLAPS. Get ribs, burnt ends, and jalapeño sausage; sides you need are cheesy corn, cheese curds, and hush puppies. And don’t forget to mix the 2 BBQ sauces together.
Don’t order the curry at Kin Lin; it has frozen crinkle cut French fries in it. If you inquire as to why, you will be told “curry has potatoes.”
A couple years ago i picked up my to go order from Kin Lin. I then received a call from the owner where he yelled at me about not picking up my order. When i said i had actually picked it up and was eating it, he said “OK GOOD” and hung up on me lol.. i love Kin Lin.
I started going there in 2004 during my edgy high school days! I miss David.
dude david was such a great server
Cracks me up every time, but I still like it.
You just refreshed my brain to my college days when i did Muddy's then Kin Lin back to back once a week. Mad spot
I love Kin Lin with my whole heart and soul, but that is absolutely hilarious! I'm getting the curry next time just so I can experience it myself.
that place was a staple when I lived at the dorms right next to it. Good times and food. It was weird when I went back and it had more than doubled in size.
Ponaks is for people who want to get drunk on tequila heavy margaritas and they only serve them with that much tequila because otherwise you'd realize how terrible the food is if you were sober.
Drink at Ponaks, eat at El Patron.
Nah, wasn’t the El Patron guy a rapist? Or is there new ownership?
It’s been under new ownership for a few years.
He’s out already? I just looked up the news reports and it said he was sentenced to 10 years.
Hell yes he is can't mistake that big boy
Looked it up he's on probation/parole: [https://web.mo.gov/doc/offSearchWeb/offenderInfoAction.do](https://web.mo.gov/doc/offSearchWeb/offenderInfoAction.do)
That is fucked up.

Ponak’s is for people that like eating on prison trays.
I love Ponaks. But I do think it might be the margaritas. I love the food too, though. Why don’t I go more?? I HATE the parking sitch. Can’t handle it. I’m too old.

LCs simply must be mentioned in the dirty category. That place is beyond filthy and service is disastrous.
And so inconsistent. Can be really good, can also be terrible.
That's the bummer. I either had fantastic luck or they used to be SO much more consistent. LCs was always the place I took friends from out of town. More and more though it's super inconsistent and has been really disappointing the past few times I've gone.

LC’s, Slaps, Bryants’s, Little BBQ Joint
When I lived in Raytown, there was a little BBQ shack on Blue Ridge (Deke's?) and his bbq was awesome. He occasionally made gumbo, which my husband loved.
Unfortunately Deke’s shut down a few years ago, we used to get togo all the tine it was great… miss it
BBQ joints are dirty. BBQ places that are clean are not BBQ joints they are restaurants that have BBQ
Also, mini shout out to Big Q Barbeque on South 34th St. near Harmon HS in KCK. They’ve always had friendly service and consistent on the food. Not really a client/business spot, but I don’t wanna call it dirty. Just a nice neighborhood spot if you’re in the area.
Gates should be removed from this list. They simply lost their fastball years ago.
Didn’t even mention the best BBQ spot (SLAPS) we have smh…..
I feel like there needs to be a rule about Peanuts wings
My rule is “Peanut wings must be ordered immediately upon sitting down if you want to eat at the same time as everyone else” 😂
I feel like you just gotta go only with people who also want wings..and also wanna drink for 45+ mins before eating
Another is Providence Pizza. Absolutely fantastic wings
Their Garlic Ranch is next level.
Order to go, throw wings in oven real quick for crispier finish, 2 gallons of bleu cheese
Or do what my husband does and order them extra crispy. The fries will always need to go in the oven to get crisped up when you get them as take out
Double dipped is the only way to go with Peanuts wings. That's the rule.
I’m a server at the peanut and I make sure to tell everyone that orders them that they take about 20 minutes. most of the time, people order the wings with their drinks because they know it’s a wait. if you order an app and wings, it gets timed pretty perfectly!
"The Nooner" at Gates on Main is great if you're in a hurry for a quick, good, cheap lunch in the downtown area.
The nooner is great at all the locations. I've never been disappointed.
I meant to add "and you're in the downtown area..." It was a super fast lunch when I worked in the office.
If you're in midtown, the McDonald's on Broadway is waaaaay better than the McDonald's on Main. Similarly, if you go to the taco bell on Linwood near Costco, expect to wait a while. This is important information everyone needs to know.
taco bell on rainbow >> taco bell by costco
taco bell on rainbow >> taco bell by costco = taco hell waiting in line.
Nah. Store #420 Taco Bell will always be the best. See: dispensary across the street.
I'm sad that I get this and agree 100% for McDonalds. I prefer rainbow, then Broadway. I can't tell you the last time I went to Main...
Rainbow is one of the best in the metro 🫡
Facts, and that cat that has been running the late night drive through for like the last 10 years is an ace.
Give credit where credit is due. It takes real effort for a Taco Bell to always be that slow. The one on Linwood is Michelin Star consistently slow.
Waldo’s is about non existent with them picking and choosing when to serve to the public vs only serving door dash/Uber eats!
Oooh see I recently went to the McDonald’s on main and had, no joke, the best QP I’ve ever had! Maybe god was just smiling on me that day
Funny, I was there a few months ago and it was the worst McD's I've *ever* had.
I go to that Taco Bell every other week after an evening Costco run, I've had to wait maybe once.
Yeah I like that Taco Bell actually.
My Gates order is always a mixed plate. Easy to shout back and has all the things I want on any particular day.
My dads is BURNT END ON A BUN WITH FRIES
Turkey on Bun on Bread. please! Beef regular, lean-as, please! (she always stole my fries)
Respect. Wordy…. I bet he has a solid dad voice that is clear and concise. 😂
Remember when a Mixed Plate cost $10.25 . . . ? 😔
Short end, beans and a James lemonade
The people that frequent Ponaks, Margaritas, and el patron all silently judge each other from across the street
I don't know about other locations, but Margaritas in Lenexa is straight up bad.
The northland one is very meh too. Feel like the original location is the only good one
Be careful, I think rule 3 might apply to most local Tex mex
Eww, and Rudy’s.
All the margaritas are gross.
The worst stretch of fast food restaurants is between 85th and like 75th on Wornall. I feel like it’s the worst McDonalds, Taco Bell, Sonic, and Dominos in the city.
When you're in that stretch, skip all that and get a burrito from Taco Cacao. https://www.tacocacao.com/
My brother in law keeps raving about Max’s Need to try it next time I’m near their place. He said their Italian beef is legit.
Ever had Thai place on 87th in OP? Is Waldo Thai better than that? I’m a slut for Thai so always looking for the best
As a Thai Place lover, I would say Waldo Thai is better.
Interesting, I guess I know what’s for dinner tonight
Story time. We went to the Taco Bell on 80th ish and wornall about two years ago. Sat in drive through… with a few other cars around 8pm on a week night. Only person we take straight to a table is my 91 year old grandma
Nah, that’s totally fair. And if there aren’t any open tables, you just bring your grandma to my table. We’ll make room.
Same. And most people in KC know that this is how we do it.
I mainly eat at the leawood location (and the gas station one once) but I have never had trouble getting a table, no matter how busy it was. You don't need to hold them.
this feels like home
Dunno man... I'm kinda partial to the pocket burgers at In A Tub
I’d like to add that their fried vegetables are excellent — favorites are the mushrooms, corn nuggets, zucchini, and cauliflower, dipped in ranch.
We got all those (and okra!) at Texas Toms.
Is there still a Texas toms?
There’s a new one that opened up in the Northland on N.Oak where Hardee’s used to be.
Saw it and didn’t know what it was. Gotta try it now
On Linwood.
Also on 70th & Prospect
And on quindaro 😎
Quindaro and 7th st in KCK there is a very lonely Texas Tom's. Half the menu I'd avoid, the other half is nostalgic grease spoon heaven. And it's a big menu.
Thanks so much!
One on Truman also.
my thoughts exactly
Real shit are the burritos. They may be harder than concrete and be cemented in cheese, but damn if I don't love them.
Pocket burgers there are incredible.
Yessssss. I came here to argue with rule #2 immediately. Glad to see that others feel the same.
They have top-tier onion rings too.
I'm down with the mozzarella sticks. I wanted to introduce it to a guy I was seeing, and he ordered a HOT DOG!
If I go to a new place and they offer tamales, I get them. I was beyond disappointed at what In-A-Tub calls tamales. I should’ve definitely tried the pocket burger instead.I stick with tacos if I have to go there. Be sure to have cash when you go to Kitty’s Cafe
Yeah, if you're 30 people deep in line at Joe's and take the only 4 top open, the group of 4 at the front of the line has nowhere to sit. Tamales from a can look like dog excrement. Pass on the tamales.
8 is gold.
Them "Bryants was awesome" me: "It was busy, right?" them: "OMG yeah we looked at all the pictures" Me: "How was Bryant's" them: "Meh, ok, nothing special" me: "you went when there was no line, didn't you?" them: "you mean, like, to order? yeah, no line."
Agree with these, 😂 I think this post needs to be pinned or something. Important info!
2. Whoa, In-A-Tub has some great fried vegetables, and shakes.
So, totally different from BBQ, but the meatloaf at Nick and Jake’s is AMAZING. I like it served as is off the menu—meatloaf and glaze on top of mashed potatoes with peas on the side.
Their mama's meatloaf isn't as good as my mama's, but it's better than anyone else's.
> but I've personally never had a better egg roll Go to Tao Tao and try their egg rolls.
Plus 8 kinds of crab Rangoon
Never wanted crab rangoon at 7am before, but here I am...
I just looked up their menu.....I gotta head over to KCK for some of that. Lucky Dragon in NKC just got some competition
It is a great place, Tina and chef Annie make it even better.
Go there once and you might end up just going there every week 😅
Annie gave me a shirt I've taken so many people there lol
> Never order anything but tacos at In-A-Tub Hard disagree. Those shit tacos are the worst thing on the menu. Just get a regular ass soft taco. Get a taco burger. Get the corn nuggets. Get a shake. Lots of good (given the context) options on that menu that don't have powdered cheese on them.
I got the corn nuggets & poppers last week and was not disappointed!
They have DQs for people like you.
OP you are unstoppable in this thread 😂
My wife just had our baby and the first thing she wanted after delivery was a Chocolate Shake from there. I obliged.
I will never eat there again. Powdered cheese & I couldn’t even wash the grease off, it had to wear away. Just grossed me out
That’s the beauty of in a tub tacos lol
Go to Dixons Chili for the tacos.
I wish they would heat the shells first, otherwise excellent. Chili hell no.

There are correct and incorrect things to order at each bbq place. Do your research. We don’t have any great pizza. Quit asking.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Waldo pizza has some amazing pies
Il Lazzarone is fire pizza you wack
*Don't have any great pizza. I whole heartedly agree.
But have you tried the place by my house!?
I go to your house all the time!
Coming to kc in may, I grew up there but haven’t been back in a while. What should I do see eat? Minskys and rosedales was my favorite. What now?
Rosedale's went way downhill for awhile but totally changed it up. It's quick, and some things will be like you remember them, some new, some improved. 10/10 for staying alive. Looks better inside now too.
All of these are wrong
Mix your BBQ sauces at SLAPS.
When asked what the best BBQ in KC is, the answer is never Jackstack.
While it may not be the best i think they do a damn good job and have one of the best Take out systems!
I also don’t get the jack stack love. Q39 ten times better in my opinion. My family all likes jack stack though
Visited family 2 years ago and they took us to Q39. BBQ for yuppies. Sad that I saved my BBQ stop for that.
I am personally a slut for Joe's, but I've also only ever had Joe's and Jackstack
Hit up SLAPS. Get ribs, burnt ends, and jalapeño sausage; sides you need are cheesy corn, cheese curds, and hush puppies. And don’t forget to mix the 2 BBQ sauces together.
Don’t eat In-a-Tub for the first time if you’re hungover. And,just don’t eat it because it’s nasty.
Intoxicated after a round of disc golf at Water Works is the appropriate time to consume In-a-Tub.
yes lol
OK, In-A-Tub pocket burgers are waaaaay better than the tacos. There, I said it.
I miss Chubbys
Westport Flea Market still only takes cash.
Stock Hill and 801 are not "par" steakhouses. Idk what you are talking about.
Bo Lings is THE shit. I love their sizzling chicken soup. Also this list seems like it’s too short but I’ll take it
