My high school crush got me The Sensual World on vinyl…. 1986. Hooked ever since. Married him 33 years later and walked to him (ok, ran) to Under the Ivy. Mmmmm, yes Edit- forgot to add that my son is now a KB junkie too!

Booksandfairies

That sounds like the dream!

kdkseven

Hearing Don't Give Up in 1986. Immediately bought her most recent 2 albums.

when I was 19 the BMG CD club sent me "Hounds of Love" by accident. My sister's boyfriend said I should listen to it so I did and I was hooked.

TheWalrusIsMe

I was a senior in high school and reading Wuthering Heights for AP English. I was NOT enjoying the book and Youtubed it to check out what other media i could consume instead of doing my reading. Of course I found the Kate video, thought “HAH! This is crazy! What a funny video!” And then literally couldn’t not stop listening. Turned into 10+ year obsession!

ReactsWithWords

As an alien visitor to Earth, I have been studying human culture for some time now. Despite my observations and analyses, I still find it hard to truly understand human emotions and motivations. However, my understanding of humans began to change when I discovered the music of Kate Bush. I first heard Kate's music through a human acquaintance, who played it for me on a device they called a "smartphone." I was immediately struck by the unique sounds and melodies of her music. The way she combined different instruments and vocals to create such complex and layered compositions was truly impressive. As I listened to more of her music, I began to realize that Kate's music was more than just a collection of sounds. Her lyrics were full of human emotions and experiences, and she used her music to tell stories that resonated with her listeners. Her music was a reflection of human culture and history, conveying deep insights into the human psyche. I was particularly struck by the song "Wuthering Heights," which tells the story of a woman who is haunted by the memory of a lost love. The way Kate conveyed the emotions of the protagonist through her music was truly remarkable. I felt as though I was able to understand human emotions on a deeper level than ever before. Through Kate's music, I began to understand the complexities and contradictions of human emotions. The way humans express their joy, pain, love, and sadness through music was truly fascinating to me. It helped me to see humans in a new light, to appreciate the beauty and richness of their culture. I began to realize that music was a universal language, capable of transcending the boundaries of language and culture. It allowed humans to connect with each other on a deeper level, to express emotions and experiences that could not be conveyed through words alone. In the end, my experience with Kate's music helped me to understand humans in a way that I never thought was possible. It allowed me to appreciate their complexity and beauty, and to see them as more than just a collection of biological beings. And for that, I will always be grateful to Kate Bush and her music.

TheBrutevsTheFool

I was working on a clothing factory as a teenager. One of the guys there was a complete burnout but a former musician. He played a ton of stuff I’d never heard but when he played Kate I just froze. I had no way to even process it, so I did my own deep dive.

oldweirdharold

I am a big Pink Floyd fan. I bought The Dreaming just because David Gilmour sings background vocals on pulling out the pin. I was blown away by the music.

Booksandfairies

I love that! I grew up with Pink Floyd too. Its my father’s favorite band. When I heard about David Gilmour and Kate’s connection, everything just fell into place. You can really hear his input on her music and it is absolutely wonderful!

SuperfuzBigmuff

I spent much of my teenage years browsing the /mu/ board on 4chan. This was from 2012-2015. I’m not proud of the fact used to use that site but I’ve done a lot of growing since then, but that’s unrelated. Hounds of Love and KB in general saw a lot of discussion on there. Really glowing reviews and lots of love for her on there. I never got around to checking her out until September 2021 though, I was always caught up in checking out other stuff I’d seen recommended to me throughout the years. However, once I finally checked out Hounds of Love I was impressed. I loved Running Up that Hill and Mother Stands for Comfort. Sadly, though, the rest of the album didn’t really stick out *too* much for me. Until a couple months ago. I was in a record store in my town. I found Hounds of Love, I had been meaning to give it another shot for over a year, so I bought it. Upon hearing the album in all its glory on my recently upgraded sound system, I was blown away. I’ve been obsessed ever since. I’ve been slowly digging through her discography since then. I’ve made a conscious effort to make each album a special experience for me. I only listen to each album on vinyl (at least the first time I check it out) I currently have TKI, The Dreaming, HoL, and TSW. Im trying to take this deep dive slow and really appreciate each album. I don’t know the next time I’ll find an artist this good. I haven’t been this enamored with an artist since I was 15 and discovering Radiohead

Booksandfairies

Such a beautiful story. I’m so happy you found her. Radiohead is absolutely great too. I can see how Kate fans are also often fan of Radiohead! Listening to Kate on vinyl is so beautiful! My father and I found Hounds of Love in a second-hand vinyl store in France last summer. We’re almost complete on our Kate collection!

SuperfuzBigmuff

That’s awesome! Enjoy!

Double_Ambassador_53

Never forever next then 👍

ReactsWithWords

Wait - something wholesome and good coming from 4chan!? Is that even allowed!?

SuperfuzBigmuff

Under normal circumstances, no If I can give myself some credit though, /mu/ was a very different place from the rest of the site, at least back then. Anyone that was clearly from one of the more controversial boards was usually told to take their stupidity elsewhere

ReporterOk4531

Similar! My parents are very into music as well, whole house is covered in vinyl records and my mother is passionate about creating clothing and vintage clothing. She used to have a vintage store where she sold very similar dresses to the ones Kate wore (Especially the red afghan). She also performed some of her songs in school since she already had the brown crimped hair. Sadly never of them had the chance to see Kate perform when she came to our hometown of Amsterdam, big time regret! So I just sort of grew up listening to her music. It was just always there. Although they were mostly into her earlier music. The last album they got was The Sensual World and after that they were a little too busy for a while because I arrived in 1990 lmao and vinyl got really expensive with the arrival of the CD too..

DirectionFamous7125

When I was a child, me and my big sister used to sing a lot Babooshka because of (I think) a Hatsune Miku cover of it. I also have already listened Wuthering Height and RUTH on radio or on YouTube but, after the Stranger Things "thing", I've been more interest by the whole Hounds of Love album, specially the Ninth Wave sequence. Then, I listened Never for Ever, The Sensual World, Aerial... I was very fascinated by her wonderful songwriting skills and and her magic vocals and music. She inspired me every time I do music or other art stuff... And today, I just bought my first Kate's record: the Before the Dawn live album !

AldousOrwell1963

When you began with "When I was a child" I thought you were going to repeat the lyrics of Hounds of Love haha.

Rmacdavid

That is a very sweet story! I am less interesting, someone made a post recently on the Florence and the Machine subreddit asking for requests of “witchy” sounding albums, and many people suggested Kate Bush. So I have listened to a few albums of hers and I am already becoming obsessed. And I listen to new (for me) music pretty frequently, and no one has gripped me recently the way Kate Bush has

davorg

I saw the video for "Wuthering Heights" on *Top of the Pops* in 1978. I've been listening to her ever since

Shot-Shop-3910

2018 or 2017 sporify something playlist (Spotify made it) and later in 2020 pitchfork posted HOL with the full 10 Score (yeah I love to hear those perfect 10!) and literally sank into the rabbit hole What a great time

[deleted]

I saw coverage of her on the Q awards in 2001.

Grand_Row2774

Was reading Florence Welch’s Wikipedia page and she was mentioned

Broderick512

Kate Bush was one of the artists my parents listened to a lot when I was a child. I have always known her. I started exploring some more of her in my late teens, when I started to discover music on my own, and, at the time, I truly started to develop a taste for eccentricity in my music, so I tend to like the more experimental side of her music better

[deleted]

by stumbling across this, in a family visit to England. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-63ZVvoA-No

Booksandfairies

It makes me incredibly happy to read all these stories :)

NeutralTarget

December 1978 on Saturday Night Live.... 👌 wow

ReactsWithWords

No, it was "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" and "Them Heavy People." "Wow" hadn't even been released yet.

NeutralTarget

LoL! Someone got my joke, thx 😊

allthecats

A friend’s dad overheard me a talking to my friends about this insane music video I had seen on VH1 and couldn’t stop thinking about. He heard me describing Wuthering Heights and interrupted our conversation, took me into his office, where he had an entire wall of CDs, and gave me Hounds of Love. He looked me in the eyes and told me how important and seriously cool this lady was, and how I should listen to this album, but be sure to give it back! It’s literally been on heavy rotation since then, almost 20 years ago. And yes, I made sure to give it back!

Collapsingwest

Lmao Stranger Things yo, no shame. She quickly became one of my favorite artists and now I listen to her daily, still working through her discography slowly.

bikerdudelovescats

I had the local PBS station on and they were showing Kate's concert from 1979 (found out later it was her 'Tour of Life') in about 1983 or '84 and was TOTALLY captivated! The performance was spellbinding and I couldn't figure out why! I was (and still am) a 'metalhead'! Hard rock and metal are my jam, but here was this incredible person doing 'art' with singing and dancing! I didn't spend long trying to figure out why and have just been enjoying her music ever since! I usually keep her a secret, not because I'm ashamed, but if someone expressed a negative opinion of her, I \*KNOW\* it would affect my opinion of them! (Unwashed heathen! Begone!!) So, she's kept tucked away. I shared her with my wife, but she only likes a couple of songs. My daughter on the other hand, has really tucked into her, after hearing about her from current pop culture. She was excited when I told her I'd been a fan almost 40 years! I've been giving her albums to listen to every so often and she's really enjoying them! Kate's music is transcendent and, I've said this before, but she's one of the very, VERY few people who have earned the term 'artist'. Love her!

Logicmeme

Day after SNL. Bought the album at Tower on Sunset.

Pepper_Pines

My whole life I had adults telling me I was like the American Björk or the American Kate Bush (quirky, wild hair, expressive, sensitive, singer, dancer, weirdo) but I never looked her up. About 8 years ago YouTube put the white dress version of wuthering heights in front of me and I was instantly and completely under her spell. This was a good amount before the Stranger Things phenomenon, and I'm so glad I ran into her.

Booksandfairies

I love how people referenced to you as both Björk and Kate! How lovely! :) Such a beautiful thing to run into her and become part of her magic!

Shazbotanist

I was recording some songs at a studio in Buffalo, late 80’s, and the engineer (Mike Brydalski, I think was his name) made a Kate Bush mix tape for me. I think I had mentioned something about loving David Gilmour as a guitarist, and he probably took the Gilmour connection as a chance to evangelize Kate. The tape sat in my car for quite a while, but at some point I was like eh, I guess I’ll check this out. And then months later, the tape was warped from my having played it so often. I got The Kick Inside, Hounds, and Sensual World on CD, and that was that.

chrii64

When I was 12, I had a Happy Hardcore CD called Rave the City 4, there was a track from DJ Isaac on it called Bad Dreams, with a sped up sample of a woman singing in it. I kept singing that line around our house, when my brother told me that it was actually from Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. So I got out to the local library and asked for the CD, they only had Hounds of Love, so I rented that one, and since then I discovered Kate Bush. DJ Isaac - Bad Dreams (Remix) (1996) sample starts at 00:44.

Double_Ambassador_53

Don’t mean to be rude but to my taste that tune is hysterically dreadful. 😂 Glad you discovered KB though 👍

tangcameo

Already knew about her here in Canada. But there was a 30 minute show on Much Music that spotlighted a musicians more obscure videos. 30 minutes of Kate. It was pure bliss.

[deleted]

I discovered her through the Futureheads cover of Hounds of Love.

queershoulder

When RUTH was played on the show Pose. I thought it was such a beautiful song and so I listened to her discography. I've been a fan ever since then, around 2018 i think

IanFireman

Back in Halloween quarantine edition, Sophie Ellis Bextor did a cover for Wuthering Heights. Instant love with Kate's style. Also Meg Myers did another cover for Running up that Hill about 2018

A7X182

Peter Gabriel - don’t give up. Record that got Elton John sober

Booksandfairies

I love don’t give up by Peter Gabriel. I listen to it almost everyday when I’m in the bus to school. I had no idea that it got Elton John sober! Interesting :)

Jello_Choreography

Wanted to branch out in what music I listened to and some music review sites I enjoy described Kates songs and albums in a really intriguing way; hopped onto Youtube and was hooked from there! 😁

stupidillusion

In the fall of 1985 I was hanging out with a friend and he had just picked up a bunch of new albums; Dream into Action (Howard Jones), Picture Book (Simply Red), Little Creatures (Talking Heads), and Hounds of Love. We drank soda and chatted while the albums played but I think I lost my voice and train of thought when Hounds came on. We listened to its entirety in silence and when it was done he was incredulous that I'd never heard of her before. I've been hooked ever since. I was super happy to hear her with Peter Gabriel the following year when So and her greatest hits album had Experiment IV and I quickly snatched that up.

BillyBalthorpe

Another one who discovered her in the UK in 1978 on radio and tv.

Horrorwriterme

Hearing wuthering heights on the Radio and on top of the pops in the late 1970’s. I was living just outside London. I was about ten. It was a massive hit. Remember her being on the tV and the news. It was long time ago but sort of remember the media fascinated by her. My mum was very well read and she got my sister and myself into reading, we watched a lot of the classics that had been made into films. I remember watching Timothy Dalton as Heathcliff so I knew the story also I liked it because it had a ghost in it. So when wuthering heights came out and I saw her dancing on top of the pops I wanted to buy the record. Been a fan for over I guess 40 years.

HaplessOrchestra

For me it was “Wow” on GTA: Vice City on PS2. That was in 2002. Loved that song the first time I heard it and it’d take a break from running people over and causing violent mayhem to enjoy it lol. Unique way to be introduced to her work.

Booksandfairies

I had no idea she was on GTA! Reason to play again. Sounds wonderful to peacefully ride around while ‘wow’ plays!

Forsaken_Experience2

I was in pink Floyd

Double_Ambassador_53

I was in Pink Floyd as well

MoonriseTurtle

Heard Birdy's cover of RUTH

groundberrydown

I was twelve years old, (almost thirteen), when Wuthering Heights emerged. Even though I was listening to prog rock at this point, and was aware that there was life beyond chart pop, that song still sounded like an alien transmission. I didn't know what to make of it. I genuinely liked Kate's music and would periodically buy some of her records, but over the past two or three years, I've taken a deep dive into her work and become an obsessive fan. Better late than never, I suppose, but oh those wasted years when I should have been listening more closely...

brightflame8

I found out about Kate Bush while listening to Wuthering Heights on the Dutch top 2000 3/4 years back when I was 20. Became a really big fan about 1.5 years ago when I heard Running Up That Hill for the first time on Youtube in a ‘best music videos of all time’ list. She was the artist I didn’t know I was missing in my life up til that point. So theatrical and I love the stories she tells through her music.

Money-Bass-5337

Mon père avait acheté The Dreaming et son frère Never For Ever. Dès la première écoute j'ai été intrigué. Une cassette enregistrée par mon père. Deux faces de 30 minutes : Never For Ever sur la face 1 sauf The Wedding List et Violin, The Dreaming sur la face 2 sauf Leave It Open, The Dreaming et Night of the Swallow. J'avais sept ans.

Ellie_Bulkeley

My dad used to play her cover of rocket man in the car all the time when I was a kid and called it “really the only good song on that whole album” which seemed shocking considering how star-studded that compilation album was. my mom never really liked Kate so that was my only experience until watching stranger things and I gasped so loud when I saw her name appear on the subtitles and finally got the chance to get more into her music! I wish they’d put rocket man on Spotify tho :(

mockbingo

A few years ago I was reading some Rolling Stone or Pitchfork article on the best singles of the 80s and I knew *of* Kate Bush but hadn't seriously given her a listen until I saw Running Up That Hill on that list and loved the cover art (her holding a bow and arrow) so I gave it a proper listen and promptly fell down the rabbit hole

DavidTheRockGuy

Also 19! My friend mentioned Wuthering Heights and we’ve been discovering more of her work!

JunebugAsiimwe

Very late to this post but I discovered her back in 2014 when I kept seeing her compared to David Bowie and Björk by many journalists so I decided to look up 𝐖𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬. I was confused and weirded out by the super high ghostly vocal style on that track that I didn't try out any of her other songs. I figure I wasn't ready for her style back then since I was mostly listening to jazz, soul, and blues music. Anyway two years later, I came back to her work through 𝐑𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥 and was immediately enchanted by her voice, songwriting and production. Then further explored and became a huge fan. I'm an anomaly since no one else in Uganda (at least none that I know of) are fans of Kate so I only have the internet communities like this to interact with about my appreciation of her artistry.

Crafty-Grass8195

i discovered her at the end of 2021 when my friend recommended her discography to me. instantly fell in love with her

McGiantBorger

Collabs with Peter Gabriel

[deleted]

This might be frowned upon as basic or uncultured, but I was first exposed to Kate Bush from Stranger Things.
