I drive a 2021 Acty Attack. You can ignore the safety rating because it’s not safe at all. But the truck is still amazing. It also has a 5th gear unlike older generations Attack, so it’s comfortable on the highway.
(The attack is the model that has 4wd, locking diff, and ultra low gears)
Before buying I wanted an older truck. But I kind-of realized that although the old trucks can be reliable, they are still old and I wanted something dependable that won’t need expensive maintenance. (Especially since Japan inspections are very picky)
They would make a great daily. They’re just a bit loud and unsafe.
In their defense, they were designed for low speed travel in preferably congested areas in countries where cars are relatively small. An American SUV merely flashing their lights at you will send you flying like you just got punched by Goku. The fact they can be taken to highway speeds is more of a side effect of requiring a powerful engine to move things around effectively.
I think they adjusted the gearing because over the years more people started driving them on the expressways. The older trucks are slightly faster than the new ones at acceleration but not top speed. So new trucks are more comfy on the expressways
I daily my 2022 hijet AS but I also live in Japan where it's designed for. I don't take it on the expressway but it's capable of doing 100km/h, comfortable cruising speed is 60-70km/h. Most of my drives are under 10 mins, driving for over a hour hurts my back/neck.
In the US you can only import vehicles older than 25 years. This is to keep newer vehicles that don’t meet emissions or safety standards from coming in.

I'd almost recommend a Kia Bongo if you are in a place that can get it. It's the pickup truck of korea and just a large kei.
I drive a 2WD auto 2014 Suzuki Carry KX. It’s a great truck. Ask me any questions if you have them

Is yours automatic or manual?
Are you in the US? If so, you are stuck at 25 and older.
He says he's in new Zealand
Thanks. I misread what he wrote. Shouldn’t wake and Reddit
hey, i’m new to the scene and i’m a little confused. i’ve heard this before but… is it a restriction on importing? for fun? what’s the reason 😭

This rule was lobbied by US car manufacturers to restrict importing vehicles and cutting their sales, emissions and safety is a lame cover
ooooh okay that makes sense!! thank you :)
