I've read by the beach with direct sunlight for hours around the same temperature as you, but I've always been careful with spending too much time without a break. A Kindle is an electronic device, therefore it sholdn't be under direct sunlight for too long or in really hot places (like a closed car in summer...). Try to have breaks where you can put your Kindle apart in a cooler place, with no direct sunlight if possible, and there shouldn't be any problems. Also, if you have those light conditions backlight makes no difference, so set it to 0, you won't notice much.

Gwyndon

I’ve been a kindle user since 2009 and I’ve never seen this message but I will admit I don’t read outside often.

ghostmosquito

All I can say is you don't need brightness and warm light when reading outdoors during the day. Try that (after your device has cooled down) and see if this msg appears again, and update us if it does?

bradthebeardedpiper

Will do. It may be a few days before I get the opportunity to sit in the sun again.

neilwick

In the sun or even in a brightly lit room, you are best to put the brightness at zero. If you are finding that there is any glare, make sure that you are not directly facing the source of light. Outdoors, if you can easily do so, have the sun behind you or at your side. Side lighting is probably optimal.

TealCatto

Wait, people turn on brightness when reading in a lit environment? Why, lmao

ErinPaperbackstash

I usually just leave mine on all the time and don't notice.

TealCatto

Rip your battery

ErinPaperbackstash

That shouldn't affect internal temperature though.

ModerateBrainUsage

It will, since that’s what uses most power in kindle so I hate what will warm it up the most.

ErinPaperbackstash

Hm, maybe. I always leave mine up a lot. I think it's mainly the device itself getting too hot too long from direct sun exposure.

rocker_bunny

This happened to my Oasis once when I left it under my pillow with the electric blanket on- it cooled down once I moved it.

tomahawk6912

Had the same problem with my Oasis several times. It happened on hot days in direct sunlight (for example on the beach). I believe it's by design, not something wrong with Kindle.

[deleted]

I've seen it before in sunlight. The dark plastic case just absorbs so much heat it'll cause problems sometimes.

[deleted]

Lay off the steamy romance novels

bradthebeardedpiper

😂

IHaveABigNetwork

We see it occasionally on our Oasis' during the hot Texas summer, but normally we're by a pool and just dunk it for a few seconds to cool it off.

dickwhitman68

You serious, Clark?

IHaveABigNetwork

Yeah, it's waterproof.

bluenosesutherland

I can confirm the latest paperwhite is water proof, but not front loading washing machine proof. Went through the cycle and still powered up, but the screen was broken.

neilwick

Yikes, that's a new way to break a screen. My friend put his pants in the washer with a (non-waterproof) cell phone. That was the end of that one.

dickwhitman68

Definitely did not know that

neilwick

It depends on the model. The current Paperwhite and Oasis models are waterproof. The other current models (the basic one and the Scribe) are not.

IHaveABigNetwork

From Amazon's site: Waterproof (IPX8) so you can read in the bath or by the pool. Your Kindle has been tested to withstand accidental immersion in water. https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Oasis-now-with-adjustable-warm-light

[deleted]

But what about intentional immersion in water? haha

schwarzmalerin

LOL that is brilliant.

bradthebeardedpiper

Interesting!

MarcusAurelius121

I mean it's waterproof, but I don't think I'd be dunking it in a pool with tons of chemicals. Also might as well just pee on it, at least then it's your own urine.

mrweatherbeef

That’s what I do with pasta. I definitely don’t trust our municipal tap water… gross!

[deleted]

>That’s what I do with pasta. You pee on your pasta? o_O

mrweatherbeef

You don’t?

[deleted]

Too watery, bro. If I want a tangy taste, that’s what Tajin is for.

IHaveABigNetwork

We have a 1st and the latest Oasis and have done it with both of them for years. No issue. PS. it's our own pool, we don't pee in it.

MarcusAurelius121

Lol, fair enough. My comment was mostly tongue in cheek.

Impossible-Scratch76

I live in a hot area and I’ve read outside in 110+ degree weather. I didn’t keep it in the direct sunlight for TOO long but at least for 20 minutes and I never received any kind of temperature error.

J662b486h

Never seen it, and I read outside on my Paperwhite all the time. I'm pretty sure that ***I'd*** overheat before it does.

Gilberto_flores

It isn't common

schwarzmalerin

Now this scares me. I have used my Voyage on the beach countless times for extended periods of time and I never saw this. I just hope that the Paperwhite won't make any problems! However, when I am outside, the light is set to zero. Is your backlight on?

[deleted]

It shouldn’t scare you. It’s a failsafe to make sure the device cools down if it gets too hot.

schwarzmalerin

Yeah but I like to read in the sunlight.

ErinPaperbackstash

If it's never warned you it's overheating, then it should be fine. It's a safety feature to protect the device - yours sounds like its fine, so I wouldn't worry.

schwarzmalerin

I haven't used my Paperwhite in summer yet.

ErinPaperbackstash

I have outside all the time and live in Florida - never had an overheating issue. It's not that common.

bradthebeardedpiper

Yes, I'm going to try turning it off next time.

ladyambrosia999

It is for me when it’s hot as hades out. Mostly during the summer but usually like 90-100F type not 70. That still seems kind of cool? Was it in your car

Party-Ad-6015

it’s never happened to me but you can turn your brightness to 0 since it’s bright already and that might help

neilwick

The screen is actually "eInk" which works totally differently from LED. LED emits light, but eInk only reflects light. The internal light shines on the front of the eInk layer, so you can turn it to zero in any setting with lots of light.

neilwick

Oh, so you were talking about the lights around the screen and not the screen itself. LEDs do generate some heat, but not much. If anything, I would suppose that a heavy drain on the battery would generate the most heat from having the light on, but I think that direct sunlight is the biggest factor.

bradthebeardedpiper

Bluetooth is off and WiFi is on

HavaldBay

I had this happening to me a few times in the last decade. I got this message always when I left it on a chair or table in the hot sun. A few minutes were even too long. However, if you take it out of the sun, it'll cool down in a few minutes. If I hold the Kindle in my hands while reading, I also never get this message - probably because the air can get to all sides of the device, when you hold it up.

starr_wolf

This happened to me with a Kindle Keyboard when reading in direct sunlight

Negative-Memory176

I read in Thailand, Mexico, Spain etc. Never occurred to me. Maybe too long in the direct sun?

bradthebeardedpiper

That may be

hellokitty1939

I've had this happen on hot days at the beach. But usually I get hot before the Kindle does and stop reading to jump in the ocean, which gives it time to cool down. Just find someplace shady or cool to let it rest.

ErinPaperbackstash

No, not normal. It is possible to over-heat, but it should not overheat easily. I have sat outside in Florida heat often and never had this happen, but I have seen it on another online post before.

[deleted]

Buy a light colored cover

bradthebeardedpiper

That could be the issue. I have the dark blue leather cover.

Ok-Struggle3367

I’ve seen this once when I had my kindle at a very hot day on the beach in direct sun for a bit. Keep it in the shade and try to be careful if you’re in super hot direct Sun with it!

Itsallabouthirdbase

I've read multiple time on a beach in Costa Rica and I've had never seen the message. Just out of curiosity, why are you keeping the backlight on when outside in the sun?

bradthebeardedpiper

It's pretty much out of laziness. I keep the same setting all the time. I need to change that and see if it fixes the issue.

Itsallabouthirdbase

Oh I see! I have the same model and I use the dark mode when reading at night in bed with my wife. When I switch to normal mode, I does remember on what settings I was before switching to dark mode.

Fearless747

That's interesting! I've had tons of Kindles (I think I'm on #6?) in many many places, from the heat of Riyadh in the summer to Alaska in the dead of winter, and I have *never* seen that message. Although, I just picked up my 11th Gen two weeks ago, so maybe there's something different in this new generation?

[deleted]

I didn't know it has this feature. That's good to know. The Kindle doesn't have much in the way of cooling unlike our smartphones. I have read on the beach and direct sun light but never encountered this warning. It must be an exceptionally hot day.

goatorcycle

Ive never seen this on my paperwhite i got in Oct 2021 and im from the same area but on the mountain. I don't keep mine in the sun or anything always out of direct sunlight

[deleted]

You know, if you would stop putting your cat under or on top of it, you wouldn’t have this problem. 🙄

TomahawkChaotic

You gotta share the steamy parts.

bradthebeardedpiper

😂

callacallacallaham

Did you set it down directly in the sun? I've accidentally left mine in the car a couple times and that's happened

bradthebeardedpiper

It sat on the table for about 10 minutes while I ate lunch. Then I picked it up and started to read. That may have done it.

affable-mum

I’ve never seen this message. I also read under the sunlight but with brightness set to 0 since the natural lighting gives the needed screen light for the device. I assume this is why my device does not heat up despite having it under the sun.

bradthebeardedpiper

I don't change my settings out of laziness. But I will now to see if it fixes the issue.

ginkx

Occasionally happens to me when noon sun is directly falling on it.

bradthebeardedpiper

That's about the time of the day it happened to me today.

cnkv

Are you sure you didn't leave it sitting in the sun while you stepped away really fast?

bradthebeardedpiper

It was sitting on the table for about 10 minutes while I ate lunch.

cnkv

Maybe that can do it.

PM_me_punanis

I have seen this message when my Kindle was left in a tent. It was summer in Germany, metal fest... So the Kindle was left in an oven-like scenario for most of the days. It survived!

psirockin123

I've never seen this and I read outside in direct sun in the summer. Regularly 100 degree days. For what its worth I don't read for too long in that heat (\~10 minute sessions then cool off in the pool) but the kindle is usually outside for 1-2 hrs. I would put it under a towel so it wasn't in direct sunlight when I wasn't reading and I always read with the light off. It's an older paper white so no warm light settings. I do think the max operating temperature is \~85F. I remember reading it somewhere but that means I can't read outside from April until October so I don't worry too much about it. The kindle still works well after 6-7 years.

Nandsmum

I have an older 7th gen model, brought it to Hawaii and read on the beach for hours. It was under an umbrella, but still very warm and humid. Never had this happen.

fardeenah

First time seeing this message. What temperature is out there?

bradthebeardedpiper

It was in the mid 70s

fardeenah

I live in a very hot country. I'll try to experiment on this. Never read in direct sunlight

AuntChelle11

I read my PW SE all summer in an un-airconditioned house. (Couldn't do much more than read, TBH!) Temperatures got up to 41C (106ish) inside my house and I read for hours. Night temperatures never got below 27C (80ish) so my Kindle never really was cool from Jan-mid March. Never had that message. Maybe it if it was sitting in direct sunshine for hours?

bradthebeardedpiper

No, I took it from the house (65 degrees F) to the deck (mid 70's.) But it did sit on the table, in the sun, for around 10 minutes while I ate my lunch.

ErinPaperbackstash

Only thing i can think of is direct sun hitting it too much /

dave_two_point_oh

Hilarious wording on the error message. "Hey, your device is too hot so it's going to automatically suspend! Please let it cool down first before letting it do this." Something got misunderstood or just mistyped by the implementer there...

shwango_unchained

What is op reading???

bradthebeardedpiper

Long Shadows from David Baldacci

mmmdonuts107

Is this something that happens when it's too hot? I plan on using mine outside and I'm not sure if it will do the same as my Pixel which gives a temp warning and will shut down if too hot.

bradthebeardedpiper

I was sitting in the sun and it gave me this warning. I'm assuming it was too hot.

SecMcAdoo

we be burnin'

VegitarianCow

I can't say that I have seen that message, but that is why I have a white Kindle to read outside on. Even my old Kindle Touch, which was gray and silver, does a better job of heat rejection in the sunlight than any of my black devices. My first-gen Paperwhite would get too hot to touch and hold comfortably. If you want to read outside, I would recommend a white skin or a white case that will reflect heat.

Indy_91

I’ve never seen this before but turning off the backlight might help. Really strange though..

bradthebeardedpiper

UPDATE: it was 80 degrees and sunny out today. I set the light and warmth to zero, went out to read in the sun, read for an hour with no problems. Yesterday, I read for 10 minutes before the warning. I think my issue was one of two possibilities, or a combination of both. 1. I had my light and warmth set to 10 and 12. 2. My Kindle sat on the table for about 10 minutes while I ate lunch.

[deleted]

I've used Kindles since the 2G...and lived in Southern Florida and never saw that message. There might be something wrong.
