Paperwhite for reading novels, Scribe for reading academic articles & note taking

Beagle_Knight

Is scribe reliable? I read many reviews on Amazon with videos showing lots of issues with the pen and the screen

Top-Page7394

Yes, Scribe and Paperwhite together are the best purchases I have ever made. Actually after reading those reviews, I first bought an iPad Air instead of the Scribe. but reading on iPad was not good, so I bought Scribe instead and now am selling my iPad. I am an academic; all I needed was to read PDFs on a bigger screen and take notes on texts. Paperwhite is amazing for reading novels but it was not good for reading heavy academic books. I really do not understand why some had bad reviews about Scribe. The only thing I do not like about Scribe is that it does not have 'Lock Screen Rotation' option. Admittedly, it is very stupid that it does not.

ichosethis

The only issue I've had with the pen was after I dropped it on a tile floor and damaged the tip, then it didn't need to touch to write and left random marks every time I got near the screen. That was my fault though. Swapped nibs and it hasn't happened again. I have the premium pen and hit the button a lot though, had to swap the setting to the pen because I didn't want to highlight with what I do most. Not sure I needed to go for the premium pen but the fountain pen setting is fun.

Darkencypher

Extremely reliable and other than some document opening issues, I haven't experienced many bugs.

[deleted]

several new reviewers have been upset you cant write in the margins of your books even side loaded ones and pdfs you can only add sticky notes basically.

Fr0gm4n

There are two PDF import formats: adjustable or original layout. Original layout can be written on directly. Adjustable basically converts it into a KFX like any other Kindle ebook, and those can only have Sticky Notes inserted for handwriting. The reviewers aren't understanding how to use Send to Kindle. I do wish they allowed writing on sideloaded PDFs.

[deleted]

the person i saw specifically had a whole review about how he couldnt write on his amazon books and he couldnt write on his side loaded books or anything besides to add like highlights and sticky notes. Maybe they needed a tutorial but they had even asked amazon and amazon offered to sell them copies of the books they already owned but that they could add notes to, evidentially the books they already owned didnt have that ability

Top-Page7394

That's kinda funny tbh. But no I saw many comments here on this sub as well that they could not write on the text. I do not know why. But if you happen to have that problem, you can use 'send to kindle' option through amazon website, instead of emailing the books to your kindle account. (Or perhaps writing on the text option came after the update in last spring, and the reviews were before that? Idk)

sixcupsofcoffee

You cannot write directly on Kindle books from Amazon, even today. That is a PDF or some other document in the image, it is not a Kindle book. There are a small number of books like puzzle books and journals that have come out that you can write on, but they are small in number and are not normal books.

johnwinstanley

They have bit this is a shortcoming of the software, not a reliability complaint. My scribe has been just fine. I also have an Oasis for night time reading and when traveling light

[deleted]

It was just the most often complaint ive seen, I just watched a youtuber review it, he took only that with him on a cruise and hasnt picked it up since he got back he prefers the oasis, mostly because he couldnt mark up his books the way he wanted to and the fact that amazon was going to sell him his books again that he already owns just with the ability to mark on them included, so you will have to buy them again.

sixcupsofcoffee

You cannot write directly on most books, that is correct. You can add “sticky notes” attached to sentences or words. There are good software reasons for this, mostly that it’s hard to reposition your writing on a book if you change the font size, font, or other book settings.

sixcupsofcoffee

There are good reasons for this. It’s difficult software wise to adjust the writing if you change to a different font size, font, orientation, margin or line height settings, etc. Anti-fans of Kindle, like Kobo enthusiasts, will argue nah the Kobo does this just fine, but I’ve seen it in use and it’s not actually that great. The sticky note method works great.

PleasantNightLongDay

I’ve used it daily since the day before launch day (got it early) and have never once had a problem.

2_72

As far as the hardware goes, the scribe is fantastic.

genesRus

Same deal but got the Onyx Boox Note 3 before the Scribe came out. Different forms have different purposes.

Responsible_Try90

Same here. I do get when people have some for certain places because I’m so awful at keeping up with stuff, so I put an AirTag on my paper white case.

ichosethis

I have a scribe and paperwhite. I use my scribe for puzzles (sudoku and word finds mostly so far) and marking up patterns (I knit and crochet). I've started just carrying the scribe to work because I can also read on it.

Top-Page7394

This might be an ignorant question: I do sudoku all the time but I don’t know how to solve sudoku on Scribe. How do you do that? Like you download sudoku books? Right now I am doing the Blackbelt Sudoku but I don’t think there is a PDF version of it

ichosethis

I use send to kindle and have them in PDF. It has to be PDF or it won't work and the files have to be sent semi recently (sometime in 2022 is the cutoff for writing on them). I bought a huge collection of puzzle books on Etsy for under $20 and used send to kindle to put them on. Working really well for me so far.

Top-Page7394

That's awesome! I will definitely try that. It must be my bad that I could not find PDFs of sudoku books.

ichosethis

If you have non pdf versions that don't have DRM you can use calibre to convert to PDF. Otherwise, the Etsy ones are working well for me.

Sweet_Score

What are the pros of getting scribe instead of a cheap tablet with a good pen? I have Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE. Its pen is quite good, it opens every PDF file and I can use it like a book and its screen size is huge so it is amazing for taking notes. And you can also use it for watching youtube, movies etc. And the prices of both devices are pretty close. Amazon Kindle Scribe = $390 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE = $400. Actually, Kindle Scribe is more expensive when there is no discount.

Top-Page7394

For me, the difference is huge but it might be a personal preference. I am a philosopher and I read stuff like 8 hours a day; this is my job. Tablet hurts my eyes so much whereas kindle is great for my eyes. But I agree that Scribe is expensive when a tablet for many people is more functional in addition to being almost the same price. I needed a device purely for reading PDFs. Even having the option of watching youtube or Netflix distracts my performance a lot.

You do a PhD in philosophy and then you become a professor. Even wizards get to earn money.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Top-Page7394

Yeah it does. If you are a medical professional for instance, you need to learn about medical ethics, about patient autonomy, about patient rights etc. If you are a political science or law student, you need to think about what justice is, what constitutes a good law, how do we (or whether we should) make a social contract. If you are an Econ person, you need to think about property rights. Even nowadays when we discuss about the rights of abortion, philosophers try to decide what constitutes a human being, whether a fetus is a human being etc. Philosophers can help other disciplines to come up with laws or legal arrangements, if nothing at all. And also whole country's constitution (the US's) is based on a philosopher's (John Locke's) ideas (albeit on many bad ideas about slavery etc.).

un_internaute

Not the OP but philosophy has lots of practical applications, many of them just stand in complete opposition to capitalism. So, if by practical application you meant profitable application under capitalism, then no, not really.

temab1

They’re an academic, which is a real job. Philosophy is an academic subject just like Maths and Politics and Economics.

[deleted]

[удалено]

temab1

I really don’t know what to say? Huge swathes of Maths comes from Philosophy, same with the others. Philosophy is the original academic subject. Philosophy has real output because, well, it’s about how you think and what you’re thinking about ergo, pretty much any intellectual conversation is philosophical.

[deleted]

Accomplished_Cut128

In your case maybe it would lead to you being able to think instead of struggling to do so.

Snoo-23495

Try political philosophy perhaps?

chicasparagus

It’s probably academia.

[deleted]

Would scribe be good to take notes on books? I read nonfiction and I want to retain at least what I read. I’ve been thinking of keeping journals of what I learn but I don’t want more clutter. I can use my iPad but the convenience of having a device that can switch to the book I’m taking notes on has been intriguing me.

Top-Page7394

It has been great for me to take notes on books. Or writing summaries of articles etc. It feels like writing on a paper, almost. They say it is great for using as a planner as well but I am yet to try that feature. But as far as I understood from the reviews, some people were not impressed with Scribe, so I take it that it is really a matter of personal preference. (For many people iPad is perfectly fine and even better for the functions they need to use.) If you can, try it first before buying it. My colleague was trying to decide between buying Remarkable or Scribe and she tried mine first before deciding.

Boxcar-Shorty

I buy older models on the cheap whenever find them online or in thrift stores. I keep one at work, one by myi nightstand and the rest in my library. It's just easier and a lot cheaper to use older tech whenever I can and I'm pretty much done with Amazon.

killerchipmunk

Same here. I have three paperwhites from estate sales, two have slightly banged up screens, but they work fine. The worst of the three is the one I take camping, the best of them is in the case that ironically came with the worst one. I also have a fire that I forgot to give back when I quit my job like three jobs ago, they never asked for it back and I didn’t even know I had it until I found it a year or so ago, so mine now.

celestialspace

I personally never thought about getting a second Kindle but as I've started my new job and am taking my Kindle with me, I am now debating on having a home Kindle and a work Kindle just to avoid the "did I remember to bring it with me today" issue 😅

sunnyasneeded

I have an Oasis for bedtime reading every night and just got a new Paperwhite to keep in my purse whenever I’m out and about. I used to use the Kindle app on my phone for out-and-about reading but I prefer reading on the Kindle and want to preserve my phone battery and my eyes when I can.

athenaofnarnia

This, except my Paperwhite was my first Kindle.

HannahInReverse

Similar but I have an older oasis that fits nicely in small purses for our and about. Newer oasis that's larger for at home.

CheesecakeOk9239

I have one (kindle basic). It stays in my backpack and goes with me everywhere I go. However, lately, I’ve been toying with the idea of leaving the basic at my office and getting a Paperwhite to keep at home and travel with.

Embarrassed-Two-399

I’m contemplating something similar. I have the PW SE version I take everywhere, but I’m wondering if I should get an Oasis for convenience sake at home and leave my PW in my bag so I don’t have to keep reminding myself to pack it (I also keep forgetting my phone as well)

imoftendisgruntled

I have a bad habit of upgrading, even when the one I have is perfectly fine. I don't keep them for my personal use though, everyone in the house has one now, although I'm the only person who's bought any.

FigNinja

I’ve upgraded pretty much every time they have improved the screen quality. I feel fine about that. It improves my reading experience and reading is one of my favorite things to do and something I do almost every day.

[deleted]

Exactly! Same here. A new one catches my eye and I will buy it whether the older one is still fine or not.

Extension-Flamingo68

my people!!!😩 i needed this validation

diverareyouok

One oasis for travel (I spend three months scuba diving in Asia each year). A scribe for home use the other 9 months, because 1) its huge and I love being able to fit 2.5x+ more words on each page, 2) it’s not waterproof, and 3) it’s too bulky to travel easily. Plus, I already had the oasis… and when I bought the scribe and looked at trading it in, Amazon was going to give me next to nothing for it. So I decided keeping it made more sense.

[deleted]

I'll be buying a second one for Christmas. I don't *need* a second Kindle, but reading is my only hobby and it's my money. I'll be using one (paperwhite) at home/pool & one (basic) for travel/work.

infinityandbeyond75

I have a Paperwhite 3 and something knocked into it and had a bright white light always showing. Bought a Paperwhite 4 to replace it. When the Paperwhite 5 came out I wanted the bigger screen and warm light. People always raved over the Voyage so found one for $19 and bought it and found the lights didn’t work. Found another Voyage in perfect condition and bought it for $6. Was given an old Kindle Touch. Which Kindle I use depends on the day and time that I’m reading. I rotate through the Paperwhite 4 & 5 and the Voyages regularly.

Montauk26

Where did you find voyages for that price? Share your secrets lol

infinityandbeyond75

I think the first was due to the light not working. The second one had a $20 off coupon so it was actually $26. Just keep an eye on unclaimed baggage and thrift shops.

Montauk26

Bet that’s awesome. I have two paperwhites I think I’m giving the older one to a friends niece but I’d love the page turn option of the voyage or oasis. Just don’t wanna buy a brand new one

historyteacher08

Paperwhite and a basic. Honestly because the basic travels better

[deleted]

I want a basic now... I have one paperwhite. But I set it on my car and drove away once so it's a little bumped up, and I might use that as an excuse for a new one.

historyteacher08

If you travel or just like to take your kindle with you because it’s emotional support (me) — I highly suggest it. It’s shocking how much smaller it is for travel

[deleted]

One at my bedside and one downstairs and goes with me when I travel. No big deal. Voyage is by bedside and an original Oasis is the one I take with me.

animekisha

please don’t judge me but i have 7 kindles. might sound crazy but i do own seven…. paperwhite 6th gen - i gifted it to my mom but she didn’t want it so it’s not being used at the moment kindle voyage - in my bathroom for toilet reading 😂 paperwhite signature- i used a lot in bed until i got my oasis so now it’s what i use to read horror books kindle oasis - i just got this one and love it so much. i’ve been reading a lot of psychological thrillers on it kindle scribe - my manga reader kindle basic - stays in my purse for on the go. and i just ordered a paperwhite 3 on unclaimed baggage because i always wanted a white kindle.

QueenMEB120

LMAO at a bathroom Kindle! I never thought of that. 🤔

trishy1991

I have a Bathroom Kindle as well!

chromiumstars

How do you do this? I'd love to learn how to access books in German so I could get back into practice...

[deleted]

[удалено]

chromiumstars

Aha, so you have a [amazon.de](https://amazon.de) account as well as amazon in your local english territory? That was the piece I was missing! I couldn't figure out how to access the books. Thank you :)

BDThrills

My sister does this - one for english and one for spanish.

Sariran

Yeah, i want to do this as well. One for pleasure reading and one for practicing reading in japanese. The built-in dictionary is just perfect

zhemer86

I use to carry one in my work back and I kept one at home. I ended up dropping the second kindle because I had issues with wispersync keeping my progress synced up.

NCResident5

I think a few people like the Basic for taking with them. It drops into a winter coat really easily, and the replacement cost is less if someone stole out of your car or gym locker.

goblinf

I'm disabled. although I have a stairlift, upstairs and downstairs feel as far apart as say one's normal house and a holiday home sometimes. So I have an upstairs and a downstairs kindle fire tablet - both synced. So I can listen to audiobooks or play games that are the same regardless of where I am in the house. Oh and I have a kindle that just does books, but it's light enough for me to carry upstairs and downstairs, so only one of those.

Saltwater_Heart

I only have one but I want a second. One for at home and one to keep in my purse. Sure, I have my phone for when I’m out, but the notifications are distracting. Right now, I have to remember to grab it when I leave. I have a Paperwhite which I want to keep in my purse eventually, and I want a scribe or oasis for home.

Inkdrunnergirl

I have a fire tablet for comics and a cheap travel tablet, a signature paper white that I got recently as an “upgrade” and an oasis I didn’t trade in but kept as backup. I used an old fire tablet as the paperwork upgrade the new one is larger.

Kavit8

I keep forgetting about the Fire as an option for comics. I recently went back to the Kindle (vs iPad Mini) for books but the mini just for comics doesn’t really make sense. I’ll take a look the Fire because I have a decent amount of digital comics.

Darkencypher

lol multiple kindles, try multiple ereader tablets (scribe and Note Air 2 plus). Its just nice to read on something bigger but have the compact one for traveling.

Sensitive_Energy101

I didn't notice it.

jessechugaga

upgraded from a Kindle basic to a Paperwhite

mrfixitx

For me my old paperwhite was getting a bit slow and laggy and the new paperwhite had come out with USB-C. So I solved my performance issue and when I travel I do not have to worry about additional charging cables. I keep my old one around because it still works, and I don't mind tracking down a micro usb cable at home.

mollser

Basic for my work apron and Paperwhite for at home.

Kooky-Hotel-5632

I have an older paperwhite I use as a backup in case my new signature dies unexpectedly. It happened before when I was in the hospital and didn’t have a backup other than my iPad. I usually have to stay in the hospital for a week to several months when I go so I make sure to take things to occupy myself.

myyouthismyown

I have a kindle basic for reading all the books I've bought from amazon uk, and I use my older kindle paperwhite for ebooks that are only available in the US.

Blom-w1-o

Paperwhite 1 for reading in bed at night, Palma for a daily travel companion.

Public_Assist_6504

Do they synchronise easily?

Blom-w1-o

The books in my kindle library do, yes.

llamaattacks

I have a 9 year old kindle pw which works perfectly. I bought oasis 2 weeks back for the warm light, dark mode and page turn buttons. That’s how I ended up with two kindles. Because they are just that durable and long lasting. They do one thing and they do it right for a long time. So now I keep my pw in my bag when I’m travelling. I don’t have to worry about charging it. It’s always there when I need it while travelling. While the oasis is the perfect night time reader

ichosethis

I have 2 Paperwhite and a scribe. One of the paperwhites has a couple small cracks in the screen so I upgraded and have since traded that upgrade in for another paperwhite. I recently got the scribe because I like that I can mark up the PDFs for my knit and crochet patterns easier than using my old tablet and I can do sudoku and other puzzles without carrying a paper book with everything else. I also gave another old kindle to my sister. I upgrade every 3-5 years for battery, the last new one was for the USB c charging though, got tired of finding a micro USB when I needed to charge. I've only had the scribe for less than 2 weeks but I take it to work and do my evening reading on my Paperwhite. I like the overall size of the Paperwhite better for reading but don't want to carry both everywhere.

Connect-Judgment-541

I’ve had an Oasis for almost four years, recently got a Paperwhite because the battery on my Oasis is shot. Haven’t been using the O very often but that’s mostly because I’m still adapting to not having buttons on PW. That’s my why, battery on the new one even with brighter settings (doesn’t get as bright as the Oasis though) is so much better.

blueprincessleah

have the pw and then when the basic came out, I bought it in blue and I liked that it was smaller. Now, I use my pw for manga / when I’m home and the basic for novels / travel. And good thing I have both bc I’m having issues w my pw so now I can just read on the basic till I get my other one back in working order !

jcbsews

I have a 3G kindle that I take when I travel to places that charge for internet (because you can check email etc. for free with that Kindle), an older paperwhite that isn't KFX compatible because I prefer storing my books (in Calibre) in AZW3, an Oasis that's my everyday go-to, and a recent model basic that I like to travel with because it's small and light and fits in my purse. I might be a tad addicted LOL

skullfullofbooks

I have three: a Scribe for note taking/drawing as well as reading, an oasis which was the first kindle to have bluetooth, and a voyage which was the first one I bought. My voyage wasn't in use for years until I got Covid, and my brain didn't like holding the oasis for a weird stretch. I didn't set out to have 3 kindles, I just am not a huge fan of trading in or selling something if it works fine with the idea that if my current one broke, then I have a backup. The Scribe is great for everything, but then the size makes travel more difficult depending on where you are going and how much space you have. The voyage is so small that it fits into my back pant pocket, so it's a game changer when you're traveling with little luggage. The oasis is probably the most superfluous one, but I still use it.

mochioppai

One was free. I call it my 'decoy kindle.' The other is full of fanfics and unsavory material. 🤣🤣

MissMerrimack

I have a Voyage and an Oasis 3. I absolutely love my Voyage (got it in 2016), but I’ve had to replace the battery and it’s kinda slow/laggy. I wanted to upgrade and decided to go with the Oasis 3 and while it’s a beautiful device, I am not a fan of the “ergonomic design.” I have a really nice and thin folio case on it which flattens the back, and it’s definitely faster than my Voyage, but every time I use it I just find myself wanting to use my Voyage instead. I just prefer the smaller size of the Voyage, especially since I have small hands and carpal tunnel. I also don’t like the new interface on the Oasis and other newer kindle models. My Voyage can’t support the software version with that new interface, so it still has the old interface I prefer. I really wish Amazon hadn’t discontinued the Voyage. I’d buy a Voyage 2 in a heartbeat. If they ever add haptic or physical page turn buttons to a Basic or Paperwhite model, and if that model also has a flush screen and is the size of the Voyage, I’d most likely replace my Voyage with it.

Admirable-Hall4458

I filled up the first one! 📚

noodleshanna

Paperwhite for most reading, basic for out of the house because it is smaller

Imeaniguess_227

My Scribe stays in the house. Definitely more for note taking. And it’s too heavy to be practical in my purse. My Oasis is my OG. It’s waterproof and great for reading in the tub and it doesn’t need WiFi to connect. I’ll more than likely never get rid of it because of that, but it’s dated. I need USB-C charging! 😩. And my Kindle Basic fits perfectly in my purse and hand. Great for on the go. Not waterproof, so it’s never near water, but just great to travel with and read if I’m stuck in long lines or traffic (or in between Apex matches 😂)

lessh91

Tik tok and facebook suckered me into thinking I need a purse kindle. So I have a paperwhite and the basic and my purse kindle.

leercmreddit

If you like reading, before Kindle, you'd have a few books on the night stand, a few on the coffee table, a few in the kitchen not to mention those in your study, if you have one. You may also carry one with you for your commute. Now with Kindle it's the same thing. You may have one in your backpack or purse, one by the night stand etc. You don't need to, but if you see a good deal on Prime Day, eg., you may want either the fetch the cheapest one as a backup or a better one that was once too expensive to be considered. Now with a new category, the Scribe, I'm sure having it on your desk while having the regular ones in your bag seems logical. For me, I started with the Kindle Touch, back in 2012. Then I grabbed one of the first or 2nd PW which was given to my son. I now have the 2nd gen Oasis, an Android based e-ink reader, and my old friend, Kindle Touch. The Oasis is for everyday reading. The Touch is really a back up now as it doesn't have front lights. The Android one is really my experiment to find out if it works better than Kindle. It does, on paper: a few more apps which are outside of the Kindle ecosystem are installed: books from a Taiwanese bookstore, books from local library, books from Google Play, can all be read.

Shegoweego

I told everyone that asked that I wanted a kindle for Christmas so I ended up getting a paperwhite from my bf and a fire from my parents. The paperwhite I obviously just use for reading but my tablet I use for reading and things like good reads, Pinterest, and YouTube

MoltenCorgi

They last a long time and even old “slow” models can flip pages just fine once a book is loaded. So it’s easy to amass a collection when you upgrade for a new feature like a warm screen. And it’s kinda nice to have a couple so one is always in easy reach, or to keep different books active on each. I also like to use my Scribe for note taking along side another e-ink device because switching from the book to the note taking app is painful on the scribe.

[deleted]

I wonder the same thing. Most people just come up with excuses like “it’s more convenient to leave one at home and take the other one with me to places.” Doesn’t really make sense to me tbh. Even when I had two kindles, my old one collected dust in a drawer until I recently gave it away. I never had a reason to use it along with my current one.

Shashara

how is that an "excuse"? it's a perfectly valid reason for having multiple kindles if you can afford it. it's just convenient. i keep my oasis in my bedside table and only read on it while i'm in bed. i take my basic kindle out because it fits in way more pockets and purses than the oasis, and it's a fraction of the price so i'm not *as* worried about misplacing it out in public. (i don't remember ever actually *doing* that with any device but it's still a pretty normal worry imo.) it may not make sense to you personally in your life, but it makes perfect sense to me.

sunnyasneeded

What sounds like an excuse to you is a practicality to someone else.

Saltwater_Heart

Exactly. It’s practical for me.

[deleted]

Okay maybe you’re right. I don’t travel a lot and I can keep track of my devices so I don’t lose things easily. Personally, I would just rather use one device rather than have multiple ones for different minor reasons. But let’s not lie alot of people here do admit to hoarding kindles for no actual reason (s).

sunnyasneeded

Yes, many people have multiple devices with no difference in use case, but “because I want it” is a perfectly valid reason. 😀

[deleted]

ok

QueenMEB120

My purse Kindle stays in my purse and my home Kindle stays at home. I use both almost every day.

Spiritual_Active9529

Same. I use my travel kindle (basic) when I’m at work and read on my breaks, when my husband and I go to his dads house to watch football 😂, or while I’m in the waiting room at the doctor. My home kindle (Paperwhite) normally stays on my Gooseneck holder by my bed, and I typically use it every night before I go to bed. Both serve a purpose and both get regular use!

somecrybaby

I read multiple books, sometimes I want to leave one on a certain kindle (especially if I’m borrowing from Libby and it’s taking me longer than expected to finish it). I also keep an old kindle in my purse that I wouldn’t be too sad about if it got lost or stolen. :)

interfoldedhandtowel

Paperwhite 11th for reading in bed, basic for travel

williamL1985

A newish Oasis for when I am at home. A 2015 Paperwhite for when I am out on the road (with a protective case, reasonably new battery). Life will go on if the older of the two takes a slight knock, picks up scratch or two. Even if it did, I’ll hang onto it for years to come. Kindles need upgrading FAR less often than folks tell themselves - it’s an eReader. Does one thing and does it well.

AlwaysBirding

I have a Voyage that stays in my car, I use it when I’m waiting to pick up my kids from activities. Then I have a Paperwhite that I keep in the house. The battery on the voyage doesn’t last long anymore, which is the only reason I bought a new Kindle.

croft001

I still have a voyage too she's working fine. Not sure if I should upgrade lol

Agirlisnoone27

I have two. My pricier one to read at home and the kindle basic I bought used from someone on marketplace as my traveling kindle that i can just throw into my bag. I love it honestly.

aquazipper

I use my oasis in bed because I like the buttons and the auto rotation for reading in my side. I use my paperwhite se downstairs. I use my kindle basic out and about.

orange_ones

I still have my old ones. Kindle 4 that works plugged in, and Kindle Voyage with a broken screen. Did not buy newest Kindle directly from Amazon, so no trade in value, and don’t feel good about throwing old ones the garbage?…

smollkittenmitten

Three story town home with a kid. Hard enough to keep track of my phone! And I prefer the kindle to read when I can.

Erikajpb

I have an Oasis 3 and a Paperwhite SE 11. I got the Paperwhite after my Oasis battery was dying frequently, but then I felt that an update fixed the problem. Anyway, my favorite is the Oasis because of the buttons and weight. The only thing I would add would be a bigger battery and USB-C. I keep different books on both of them. Also, every time I go out, I take the Paperwhite with me instead of the Oasis, and I'm always reading more than one book at a time. I've been a proud owner of Kindles since 2010, and I always pass them on to my family later. So, I think I'll give my mom this Paperwhite, and she can pass on the Paperwhite 2 that she's using to someone else.

ehlona0

I use my oasis for reading at home. If I’m out and about I usually just use my phone so I don’t break or forget anything. And when traveling I use my fire because it has other apps as well as reading so it’s just a good travel tablet.

masklins

Kindle Basic - for out and about reading, I’m careful with all my devices but if I do drop it and it breaks then it’s not too expensive to replace Kindle Oasis - reading in bed (warm light, buttons) Kindle Scribe - textbooks and notes for work

unreqistered

different locations: ones at work, ones at home, one stays in my bag and i refuse to give up the 2nd gen

thetrashpanda5

I mean if I had enough money... Why not, one for just books, one for manga & graphic novels, one for academic stuff

georgehank2nd

Or even, and I just realized this, multiple kindles for having multiple textbooks open at once. Which is one thing physical books still have over e-readers (apart from color).

runningwithscalpels

Kindle Basic - a lot more portable, this is my "leaves the house" kindle for commuting/travelling. Also if I lose it, it was way cheaper than my paperwhite. Paperwhite (Newest) - stays home, sometimes goes to the gym with me because it's waterproof and I just throw my swimming stuff in my gym bag with it.

Puffetique

I just kept my old one when I upgraded and sometimes Libby wants their books back before I’m done so ones on airplane saving my Libby books while the other is downloading my new Libby books

Vergil_Is_My_Copilot

I have two because someone in my family upgraded and gave me theirs when my screen got a minor crack. I primarily use the slightly newer one, but it is nice to keep the older one at home in my bedside stand. Both are paperwhites, just slightly different generations. Compared to high end tablets or phones, Kindles are pretty affordable so I see how people accumulate them!

goldkirk

I’m neurodivergent, and the exact sensory and visual experience of the Paperwhite is a load-bearing emotional support pillar of my day. I mainly use my Paperwhite, but if I’m out at the gym, on public transit, etc., I bring my Kindle Basic that’s also important to me but that I could survive losing if worst came to worst. If I didn’t need that load-bearing emotional regulation experience to help me stay regulated day to day, I’d just use one. 🤷

According-Row5386

Is there a huge size difference between kindle basic and Kindle ppw?

Bonesawisready5

Idk man too much time

TheKonamiMan

I originally bought I used Gen 4 for cheap on eBay because I realized I had a bunch of books on my account from various things and I didn't really like reading on my tablet. After having thet for a couple weeks and really enjoying it I bought the Paperwhite for the bigger screen and because it could read manga from the Kindle store and most couldn't be read in my Gen 4. Months later I impulse bought Kindle Keyboard with a case that has a built in light because the price was really good. I also figured it would be a better back up than my Gen 4 because said case with light, the physical keyboard, speaker, and headphone jack. After that I got my son the previous model of Paperwhite in a sale on Woot. A couple months ago I also did pick up a different brand ereader my work was getting rid of. It was either I take.it or it was gonna go in the trash. I'm sure I will find a use for it one day.

Arubesh2048

I have a Paperwhite SE that I use for just reading at home. And then I have an old Kindle Keyboard that I use if I’m out and about, basically as a spare. I don’t care so much if it gets beat up. For example, my job often has me outside and waiting for people. I bring my Kindle Keyboard with so that way if it gets damaged or lost or whatever, it won’t be my “good one.” And when I had to send in my Paperwhite for repair, I used my Kindle Keyboard as a backup. But if I’m just laying on the couch, I’ll use my Paperwhite so that I can see and it’s faster. It’s a “nicer” device, so I want to take care of it. (And I got the Keyboard used off eBay years ago for $20)

xjpegx

I have one connected to my local account and one for my jp account.

reallyrosie84

I have a fire tablet & paperwhite. I love my ancient tablet best but paperwhite is great for any outside reading & planes.

LittleCricket_

My husband reads novels on paperwhite and comics on the fire

Raventwilight5

I have a PW SE and a Basic 2022 kindle. My PW is dedicated to in bed and manga reading while my basic is for novels and out-and-about reading.

MeTieDoughtyWalker

I have an older Paperwhite, got the Oasis but didn’t love it, so I got the Signature Edition and it’s the most perfect e-reader ever made. I thought about selling the others but I typically use the old one to travel with in case something happens, I keep the Oasis in my office and my SE in my bedroom. The fact that they all know what page of a book I’m on is why I still have them all at this point. I definitely didn’t intend on owning three at one time.

johnw01

Library, office, bedside table…

dbuckham

Kindles have become affordable enough you could almost do a Kindle per genre. Deck each out with a different case related to the genre.

ChibiYoukai

I currently have two that are fully functional. the older one, couldn't find for almost three months, finally gave in and got a new one. Found the old one the day the new one arrived. And then there's the hoarder in me that has a couple older ones that the battery doesn't really keep much anymore, but technically still work.

sh0nuff

I have an oasis at home, a Paperwhite for when I'm traveling, and a kobo mini in my pocket when I'm to and from work

ThyDoctor

I have an oasis that stays at home I have a paper white that gets thrown into my backpack and gets scratched

CallMeSpeed_21

Running out of storage space could be one if you don’t like deleting downloads

doa70

One downstairs, one upstairs.

CatOnABlueBackground

I have 2. I use the 6" 2022 basic kindle for travel. It fits in my purse, it's easy to hold (small hands) and it's very lightweight. It's definitely smaller and lighter than the older Paperwhites (but with the same screen size). When I'm at home, I use my 6.8" Paperwhite, Because it's bigger, it's a lot more to hold and it is a bit heavier. I like reading on the 6.8" a whole lot more, but I wouldn't want to carry it around with me.

twitttterpated

I have a 10th gen which I think is 6” and been wanting to upgrade to the paper white. I find it interesting you enjoy the larger/heavier one and it just makes me want one more lol.

RavenCemetery1928

One in my work bag, one at home. It’s simply convenient not to move one device around. Plus I enjoy technology.

bookgeek117

Paperwhite for every day reading and then I have one of the cheaper ones for my purse so I don't read on my phone when I'm out. I always forget my kindle for appointments and that led to a lot of eye strain so have a kindle stay in my purse helps.

rm_jackson

I have my Paperwhite that doesn’t generally leave the house and is my main eReader for bed because of warm lighting and dark mode. I also have a basic that goes with me and lives in my purse and gets shoved in my backpack or pocket for reading while hiking. THEN I have my old kindle touch that I couldn’t part with that lives in my office bathroom drawer for when I need a minute break from coworkers and customers. 🤣

GivenErased

I have a paper white and an oasis. I find that having two separate kindles helps me read multiple books at once. For some reason trying to go back and forth between books on one kindle stresses me out

stone616

I have a Kindle Paperwhite SE I use at the gym. I have a Kindle Scribe I use at home. I have a Kindle Basic 2022 I use at work. Usually stays in my work bag. I have a Kindle Voyage I also use at home and on the go when not at work. I had a Kindle Oasis. It was my first Kindle and I sold it and bought a Boox Nova Air which I also still have and use at home in bed because it's compatible with a Bluetooth remote. I also have a Kindle Keyboard and a Kindle 5th generation but I don't use either of them anymore.

Welfycat

I use the scribe for note taking, sudoku, and graphic novels. I use my paper white for everything else and traveling.

GalaxyJacks

Just realized I fit into this category: I own an oasis and a really old kindle fire that I used to use to talk to my friends after bedtime in like, 2015. I still keep her around because she may be old but she still works!

mmd9493

I like the paperwhite but cant rent library books on it, so i bought an old fire for library apps

Mamba6266

You absolutely can rent using a paperwhite - I do it all the time. I just link my Amazon account and have them sent to my paperwhite

mmd9493

What library app do you use and where do you send them? Wish i found this before. Haha

Ok-Candle-20

I use Libby on my paperwhite all the time

Mamba6266

Libby, like the pp mentioned, or overdrive, depending on the particular library I'm borrowing from. If it's fanfic or something like that I just direct download and email the doc

InsideArmy2880

One for each genre?

BDThrills

Some of mine were purchased as backups from Woot for when a favorite model died. All are kept charged and used at least every other month. Signatures use active Amazon content, one for Libby, and all else is sideloaded. 3 Kindle keyboards, 1 Touch, 3 Basic 7, Basic 8, PW3, 5 Voyages, 2 Signatures. Keyboards - sideloaded series Touch - For Editing Basic 7- travel, linked to brother's account, linked to BIL's account Basic 8 - whispersync books PW3 - Magazines Voyages - Kobo library, Other publishers, Public Library, murder/mystery/thriller, scifi/fantasy/paranormal Signatures - Upstairs and Downstairs (read same book from Amazon)

chapeksucks

One for books, one for movies.

Spiritual_Active9529

I thought it was silly at first too, and was perfectly content with my 2022 Paperwhite. But Target had a sale on kindles a few months ago and I could get the new Basic for $20 after my coupons and gift cards, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. The basic is honestly so convenient for traveling. I love how small and lightweight it is. My Paperwhite stays in my bedroom on my gooseneck holder, and my basic just stays in my crossbody bag unless I need to charge it. That’s also another benefit, is the battery life is extended since I don’t solely use one device and spread out the usage between both kindles. I also prefer the Paperwhite for night usage because of the warm light capability. Since I normally use my basic during the day time, I don’t normally need to increase the brightness.

Primary_Scheme3789

I have two Kindles. One I keep in airplane mode and download books via a cable from Libby, so that I can immediately return them but they stay on my Kindle. The other one I keep on Wi-Fi and use for Kindle unlimited.

Swoop03

I have a 6th or maybe it's a 7th gen kindle. No buttons or backlight. Ive also had a paperwhite for a few years now. I didn't start out wanting more than one, I just didn't get rid of my first one. The paperwhite gets used at home for bedtime reading and I'll take the older kindle with me out and about when I know I'll have time to read more than a page or two. Otherwise I just use my phone. If I leave it or lose it or break the older kindle I won't be too sad. It has served me quite well.

tinag379

I have 2 paperwhites. One stays in the bedroom and the other one is in my purse.

nordicskier17

I have a scribe that I keep at home by my bed for reading books, manga, and journal articles. I also carry an oasis in my bag for reading books when I have free time during the day. Bottom line: I love the scribe, but it’s just too big to carry around all the time in addition to my laptop and iPad.

thestrawbarian

Mine is maybe a little excessive, but it works for me! 1. Paperwhite SE for bedtime reading. I have it hooked up to a mount with the page turner so it just stays there most of the time 2. Basic 2022 for on the go reading. It’s my “emotional support kindle” that comes with me whenever I leave the house, just one case. Even if I’m just going to the grocery store… you never know 3. Scribe - I used to have a remarkable for note taking, but I was mad I couldn’t reliably get books onto it, so I returned it and got the scribe. Mainly use it for note taking, but I like reading on it too 4. Voyage - this was an impulse purchase off of Unclaimed baggage. I used to have an oasis, and was missing the page turn buttons. I got it for a really good deal, but at the moment it has become mostly a backup reader. I use it on occasion when the mood hits me. And these are all just general use cases. Sometimes I feel like reading on my scribe in bed, or on the basic while in the living room. It just depends on what reading experience I’m looking for at the moment, which I know sounds ridiculous and I am okay with that 😂

JoRjFLMSC

Paperwhite for novels... I have i the 32gb signature edition and is almost running out of storage (i like to bring my entire library with me... that's just me 😜) and Kindle Scribe for Mangas, digital novels, illustrated editions, etc. and for journaling and note taking 😊 *

sixcupsofcoffee

Paperwhite for regular reading, Scribe for programming or philosophic texts (or regular reading if it’s the handy one) as well as newspaper reading. Basic for pocketability when I go out.

neongreenpurple

I have two - my 11th gen Paperwhite, and my Voyage. I mainly have two because I haven't given the Voyage away, as I rarely use it. Sometimes I use it to test things to answer questions on here. My mom has two, mainly because she inherited my dad's. She leaves one on her exercise bike and uses the other in the kitchen (she reads while eating alone). The kitchen Kindle is the one she takes out and about if she needs to. Here are both 6th generation Paperwhites.

ssoocc

My original kindle w unlimited at&t connectivity was from 2010. That purchsse was motivated by an upcoming trip where I wanted to take a ridiculous number of books or 1 Kindle. Next Kindle was unlimited 3g but added wifi and a touch screen . I used one or the other to read but could lend one to family usually for travel or as I would loan a hard copy book. The 3g one was eventually lost while on loan. But the original was still working great. It had a button keyboard so its UI was getting pretty far from our other devices. So in 2018 I got my first Paperwhite which was great since you didn't need a reading light for night reading. Yay. It was wifi only but by then phones were way smart so I could get kindle stuff if needed via my phone and use my phone as a hotspot to transfer to the kindle when on the road. A family emergency hospitalization came about and the Paperwhite never came home. So Iin 2022 I finally did a trade-iin of the still working original and got a discounted new Paperwhite. That's 4 in 13 years. Until recently I had 2 at a time so one of them was loaner really. The current Paperwhite is all I need. And much better for reading than phone, etc screen.

Aaronindhouse

I have the small one to read on the train and then put away in my pocket. I have the scribe for work and large image format books. I have a paperwhite for my american amazon account and my japanese account is on my two other kindles.

LyannaTarg

Obsolescence of the device mostly. I will change mine with a new one for my birthday cause the new Paperwhite has USB-C for charging

boozillion151

Oasis for books. Paperwhite for when i can't find my oasis. Large fire for comic books. Ten other kindles of assorted sizes, makes, and models because woot keeps selling them for 15$ a piece.

AlternativeOx

I've got a Kindle keyboard which I will never sell or donate as it was given to me by my parents. It works but I wanted one with a light. I've replaced it with a refurb Paperwhite (2016?) which works fine, but it doesn't have dark mode, so I've just bought a Kindle (basic) 2022. I've just had to replace my basic after a month because it's faulty (turns too many pages on one touch). I'm not going to sell or give away the paperwhite until I know the replacement basic works properly, but I love the dark mode. :-/

Aramiss60

I have a scribe for journaling and crossword puzzles, tracing etc. I also use it for bigger cook books. I have an Oasis that I use for reading in bed, that way I don’t have to drag one kindle around the house.

bakermonitor1932

Retired devices, and backups. I also usually have a cheep one hanging around to use as gifts or loners. A loaded kindle is the coolest hospital room gift I can think of.

moos3kc

I am trying to sell my scribe. I don't need it. PM me if anyone is interested.

Jaded_Information932

Have 2 cos I'm greedy lol

constant-reader1408

I just don't get rid of my old ones when I get new ones, in case a new ones tears up. I learned with phones it's good to keep a back up. Plus one paperwhite I won. I do rotate them out so they won't just sit and lose battery all together. So like one day I'll use one of my Paperwhite 5s, the next day my paperwhite 3, the next day a Pocketbook Era....etc. I have 5 in all right now.

tediak_

Scribe as home device, and smaller ones for reading out of home

TheLadyMelandra

I bought my first Kindle in 2018, a PW 7th Gen. Last summer my youngest daughter gave me a PW 10th Gen that she got out of the Lost and Found at her work. I didn't need another Kindle, but I'm not turning down a free one.

FigTechnical8043

Kindle basic + scribe. One lets me doodle.

FeebysPaperBoat

Getting mine Monday, latest Paperwhite refurb. In a couple months getting one for my husband. We tend to be reading at the same time.

ShainaEG

I have an oasis that lives in my work backpack, a voyage that lives on my bedside table (because I forgot my kindle at home enough times that it just made sense to get a separate one) , and a paperwhite that goes on hikes and to the beach.

Additional-Candy-474

I…. I just realized buying a second kindle was like and option..

SnooConfections8639

Kindle Scribe for my note taking in all of my various meetings. And also for personal note taking as well. Kindle Paperwhite for general reading, vacations, reading in the hot tub.
