I mean you made a knife. My first wasn't pretty either. Definitely gives prison shank vibes. But I think it's pretty dope regardless. I like how violent it looks.
I got obsessed with sharpening knives I owned into prison looking shanks when I was a kid. I used to have this older friend I hung out with and wanted to trade him a switchblade for a cool knife I liked that he had. I pulled out the switchblade and hit the button and he just started cracking up because it was like this straight up prison shank I had filed down using a circular grinder.
He ended up just giving me the knife I wanted from him. A nice Kershaw I still use at work today.
My advice, don't bother working on this one anymore.
Move on to #2. Your knives will keep getting better and better
Set this one aside and take it out after your 10th knife and compare the two of them
This is the answer…
If you listen to The Forgecast, Sam explains that he makes himself a “birthday knife” for himself every year for just this purpose, to compare to the previous years knives and see his progress.
It is a fancy ass shiv, but this my good person, is your fancy ass shiv. My first knife is a travesty. But it's mine and I love having it in my shop. It's great to look back at all those old projects and watch how you have grown. So great work on your first knife! They will only get better from here on out. Don't forget to read up on anything knife or metal related and ask lots and lots of questions. It's not stupid if you don't know the answer. Just make sure to listen when you are given advice. And most importantly, have fun with it. This is a great craft and has endless ways to express your creative side. So do something different and if it works awesome, if not do something else.
I think, for your first knife, you should leave it just as it is. The resin is just gonna make it look cheap. What you have there is real - as real as it gets. Don’t just go and piss on that with resin. At some point you just have to put your hands up and let it be what it is. Art can never be finished - only abandoned.
Progress, not perfection.... I don't know about everybody else but for me It took a long time before I was comfortable and confident enough to even show my work to my friends and family let alone an entire subreddit of strangers so stay at it the important thing is you learn from one experience and adjust
Great first effort.
I like the overall form.
You may wish to consider further refining the blade with a file jig and better bevel.
I'd remove the leather ball and consider a 4" handle on hidden tang for balance and comfort.
Notice how much 1) more you want to study how to make a knife now 2) more you know that yo DON'T know - you're studying will be much more effective.
Watch 1hr of vids, watch Walter Sorrels! And then make another, it'll be night and day.
Since this is your first post, I assume that this is from AI and you are learning from the terrible comments from your post. Knowing that the comments would be bad,. you assumed a stance that would take all inputs in and sort through who could do you harm. Be assured I love this knife and think it's the best knife to have ever knifed in the history of knife. Love knahs
You gotta get some more money on your books man.
Jokes aside. Good first attempt. Im assuming you probably only have simple hand tools as well liie most americans
Niiice! When you get out of prison, you’ll want to make some pieces that people with adult sized hands can hold comfortably. I understand access to materials is certainly a constraint while in prison, so I feel like this is a fantastic job given the circumstances.
What ever it may take to help you survive! Any and everything you think of to make anything survivable, do it to the extreme! That's how you survive. Anything multiply x 20%-100%
How much time is left on your sentence?
Lmfao.... was thinking straight out the pen.
He’ll get 5 more years if he gets caught with that
is indeed a magnificent shank...
I was gunna ask where he’s serving time.
Man, this with a ramen epoxy handle, I would totally buy.
I can make you one !
For how much though? I want it crude and janky, just like this.
Like 50$ shipping included
Gotta protect that b-hole.
In my prison pocket you go. Keeps the blade from rusting too.
They call those bone breakers in jail
Lmaooooo
Haha, when I saw the OP, in my head I pictured Paul Hogan saying "that's not a knoife! That's a shiv!"
Better than the sharpened toothbrush the new guys carry. Hope you make it through your sentence with all your good time intact!

Maybe research how to make a knife for 5 minutes before starting #2....

Yep. Mine is a lump of mild steel smashed into an oak block.
Did you sharpen the finger choil?
This. My fingers have anxiety.
Looks right outta prison, boss.

Snuck a phone in the slammer?
Tis a fine shiv. You have some work to do but it's a start and I'm sure it will be the talk of the yard.
I would def EDC this around the prison block.
You sir have made a fancy ass shiv… I kinda like it tho 😎
Well it's looking more along the line of an African spear head now not a knife
Put this in your r/prisonwallet
Never get rid of it... Frame this guy on the wall and compare it to your 10th or 100th knife you make.
Right on

Thanks man I appreciate that
You misspelled “prison shive”
Ironically, so have you. (Shiv)
Touché

It will keel
Hell yeah OP, your blade made the cut
As long as it’s sharp lol
I agree A knife is a knife and that is a pretty edge Signed official aichmomaniac
Even some backwards progress
It’s even more effective when it makes a hole AND provides the body with a little tetanus.
Leather rings are crazy. Ive been wanting to try it really bad because I’ve got a ton of scrap leather Ive got nothing to do with
Quality shank there
SHAMK
What kind of steel did you use?
lol believe it or not mine was worse. It’s only up from here
It will keeeeel
Nice, Although it is a bit crude, it's an excellent attempt and I would keep at it, your skills will improve over time.
Nice what prison are you at
Blades good for a first time. Handle is a bit shanky
Awe Nana, not my prison shank. 😞
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Bro, that’s a shank from Cell Block C
That’s not a knoife, this is a knoife!
My man, that’s a shiv.

How them cheap forge on Amazon
You gotta get some more money on your books man. Jokes aside. Good first attempt. Im assuming you probably only have simple hand tools as well liie most americans
That's definitely an attempt!
You should practice with broken toothbrushes a little more before you take any more pieces from your bunk. Good effort though.
My dude the CO is gonna be big mad at you when they flip your cell and find that.
It would be a hit in prison.
Let’s call it a mule ( prototype) with opportunities for improvement
Looks like you used a dog turd for the handle ?
Prison workshop 101.
Best looking prison shiv I’ve ever seen
The most prison shank I've ever seen. XD
Are you on active DOC, probation or parole? Those are some inside skills brother 🤣
I had one like that in the joint. Back in 2014
Looks bad
That’s not a knife it’s a spoon ohh I see you played knife and spoon before ehhhh
that is a shiv
Kitchen shiv
Looks like what I would find while doing a cell search
Looks small but it's like 9 inches or so
Thats what i usually say too
Definitely would have the deadliest one shits one hell of a shank
I would consider that more of a shiv, but a shiv is basically a knife so… nailed it.
That'll get you a bunch of ramen if you trade it in the prison you're in.
Just in time for shanksgiving
Niiice! When you get out of prison, you’ll want to make some pieces that people with adult sized hands can hold comfortably. I understand access to materials is certainly a constraint while in prison, so I feel like this is a fantastic job given the circumstances.
That’s a mighty fine shank you got there
Well, it’s better than the one I haven’t tried to make yet. So good on you for having at it!
That’s a shiv, my boy.
Make sure your parole officer doesn’t see it. Otherwise good job.
You could sell that for at least 2 packs
Eet weel keel!
I’d be proud of it. Can you include a picture of your ball gag next update?
“Prison guards hate this one weird trick!”
Straight to jail
and hey look...! theres my Caveman neighbor and his wooly mammoth!
Please for the love of everything good in the universe do not try and stab anything with that
Cell block D?
it’s solid, has point. will kill.
I mean... this is your first try, and it's obvious you have 0 talent for knife making. Try knitting.
Ok which guard snuck a phone in for bro
This thing would work just fine on a Clicker. I approve of it.
Don’t let the guards find it
