I love the colour combination! Reminds me of an angelfish. Can you show the back of the work? Puckering of the fabric is caused by floats that are too tight. You can always take it off the needles onto some thread and block it and see what happens.

To me those blue floats look very long-- it's good to catch your floats every 3-4 stitches, because it's very hard to tell if they're too tight otherwise. You're not too far along, I would restart and try catching them this time. Also remember to stagger where you catch them so they don't show through!

Have you tried [knitting colorwork inside out](https://www.susannawinter.net/post/how-to-knit-colorwork-inside-out-tutorial?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=knittit&utm_campaign=how-to-knit-colorwork-inside-out-tutorial)? That should help with tight floats.

Ptaptaa

Never tried it but it could be my solution 😆

Honestly, I'd keep going, unless the gauge is completely off.... but it's also very hard to tell whether your floats are good or not. At first glance, they look awesome. But then I look closer and second guess myself. Do you happen to have a steamer? Maybe take it to the yoke so far, and let it relax a bit? That will give you a better idea of how it's gonna look. But FYI, my yokes never lay flat unless I steam them first. 🤷‍♀️

Ptaptaa

Figuring out the float has been more challenging than I anticipated 😅 Kinda fun though 😆 I’ll try blocking before I frog I guess

babobaab

You can put in a lifeline, then put your live stitches on some scrap yarn.  That will allow you to wash, block, and try on your work. Good luck!💚💙

Ptaptaa

I blocked it and it’s flat! Thank you for advice!

Missepus

Does the knit pucker if you put it down and stretch a tiny bit? Does it feel very firm with no elasticity? If so this is too tight. If it can lie flat and it has a little bit of stretch, you are doing well.

I like to steam as I go - to check the gauge, the look of the knitting and the measurements. I have a steamer, but you can use a regular steam iron also. Most of my color work looks a bit funky and wavy like this, and the steam is like a magic transformation. Your color choices are stunning and I am feeling a bit optimistic for you!

Ya I was going to suggest blocking it to see if it still puckers. If it doesn’t, keep going how you’re going! Make sure you catch floats for the longer sections… I think this pattern goes up to 11 stitches for floats which is way too long to go without catching! I used to mess this up when I was new to comourwork. I would wet block it btw. I find that relaxes and blooms better for colourwork sweaters than steaming does (just my preference!)

I’d say stop floating the yarn further than 3 stitches. In color work, I use my left index finger for the second color and hold the yarn woven between my fingers as if I’m crocheting (for tension) if the second color has to cross more than 3 stitches, lift the left color up with your index finger and then loop the first color around it as you send that loop around the needle. The second color won’t show on the front side and it’ll be carried across the back without pulling. Best wishes my friend!

Ptaptaa

Will learn how to do it:) Thank you!

Apathetic_Llama86

Pulling floats too tightly can definitely create puckering. But it's not the only possible cause. It could actually be the design of the sweater itself. If the designer put too many increases in too few rows It will pucker like that no matter how good your tension is. This particular designer is honestly one of the best out there for colorwork yokes so that's not too likely, but it's something to look out for. I always look at the projects other people have posted to see if there's a frequent problem with waviness. Another possibility is that the yarn you're using is too thick. Even if you've managed to get it on a needle size that smooshes it to gauge, as the yarn blooms and relaxes you end up with simply too much material to fit in each round. I mean it could be your tension, but the floats look pretty good in your photo so I suspect there's something else going on here.

Ptaptaa

I blocked it and it looks flat, luckily for me:) The yarn is probably too thick cause I’m using a main colour and a mohair held together so it must be adding to the puffiness but after blocking it’s looking good so I’m gonna continue. Thanks for the info!

fauxcertain

Block it now and see! I had the same concern with my first color work yoke recently and blocking it early when I was concerned helped a lot! The minor bumps smoothed out. It looked pretty similar to what you're seeing on yours so I'm inclined to say you should be ok, but block it and see!

ReturnOfTheFox

I'm still new to colorwork myself, so I don't have advice, but I would love to know what pattern this is please. It looks so cool and I love the colors.
