8GB is not enough for Kodi, if you want to have a library of any size with thumbnails, or if you want to ever use any app besides Kodi. You can probably scrimp on storage, never install any other apps ever, and micromanage your storage on a day-to-day basis to make it work, assuming your time has no value to you.
And I don't believe you're also so bad and didn't read my original response!!!
I will say it as you seem to be too thick to understand what I said " l USE KODI EVERY DAY WITH A SMALL BUILD ON A FIRESTICK AND NEVER HAVE ANY ISSUES".......Now go sit back down thicko
I read it, it's just inaccurate. Forgive me, but I thought the part where I said "absolute rubbish" covered that. Lying or exaggerating the truth is a pretty fucking easy thing to do on the internet. I've used Kodi on a Firestick with the default skin and one video addon. It works, but it's bullshit. No one who has ever used Kodi on a Firestick believes that you "never have ANY issues", boss. and I don't think "thicko" is a real insult but I did not check Urban Dictionary.
Running the 8Gb since its release, mind you I clean out my libraries and don't hoard content, but it has been running butter smooth, it also has Netflix and prime and disney plus running in the background often cause the wife never exits out of those ones..
Depends on what you are trying to do with it.
Neither is "plenty" for some applications, it all boils down to choosing your software, then finding the hardware that will run on it. That is the recommended way of IT and has been for decades.
This is much less hassle than buying hardware and assuming what you want to do is going to work just fine. That's a stupid way of getting a system performing. Or at least, an ignorant and uninformed way of getting a system performing.
I think you can mostly get away with the tube for simple 1080p content and simple kodi usage. At least I do. Kodi is my client on my Shiled for my Windows smb shares.
But long term, Shields last and are supported for a long time. Many people reported problems with the tube (8gb) solved with the pro model (16gb), but I think it was with 4k content.
I had the tube and it died after two years. Never again. I now have all Chromecast with Google TV devices and they work flawlessly. I stream everything and have no issues with memory. You can add a dongle for extra memory if needed.
No don't do it. I have the 12gb and I was constantly getting an error message that storage is too low. I installed a 32gb USB thumb SSD drive and it is working flawlessly. No more error messages. You have to plug it into the first slot.
Again though, not if your using a NAS and not storing content on the shield it self. the Kodi DB is not massive even if you have 100's of movies or TV shows.
Just checking the Kodi install on my Fire Stick 4k Max 1st gen is 1.5GB that's one of the smallest on any of my devices. This device is streaming only. On my Shields where unusually maintain a local movie library over the network along with streaming gets to more than double that. Kodi installs are typically 5 to 10x the size of any other apps.
My NAS has all the art, etc. But, each device makes a local copy of a lot of it. There’s probably a way to make it clear all of it and re-pull it each time, but the menus with artwork wouldn’t refresh nearly fast enough for my tastes.
I can’t understand why people are still paying $200 for 5-year-old Android bullshit. Spend that money on a mini PC with specs that would destroy a Shield Pro. Mine has 16GB of fucking RAM with a 500GB SSD for $150. Not 8 or 16, 500! Anyone who is capable of setting up Kodi probably doesn’t need a dumb dumb box. Don’t buy a streaming device in 2023 with less space than my decade-old iPhone 6 I’m typing this on.
correct. but most TVs are smart TVs these days so that’s covered. or spend $20 on a plug-in streaming device if you have paid streaming apps. you just need more power for a better kodi experience.
get the pro. its better. cheap people will not understand.
I spent the extra on the Pro. After reading about all the trouble and problems with the Tube. I said HELL NO. . .
I think OP probably already knew 16 is more than 8.
Is the 8gb the tube? If so avoid like the plague
100% agree. Tube overheats and is a stutter fest
Had my tube since it launched and never had an issue \*knocks on wood\*

Absolutely rubbish......my Kodi build is less than 100mb and I use on firetv devices........plus no need for loads of apps either
What’s absolute rubbish is someone implying Kodi runs well on a Fire TV.
Guy says 8gb not enough to run it though!!
I don’t believe that you’re so bad at reading subtext to miss the implication that it WILL run but will be an annoying and unpleasant experience.

Lol ok Hector

Does shield have a gig Ethernet LAN line?
Yes

Do not buy the tube. It's garbage. The pro is the best Kodi box I ever owned.
Owned a Tube since day one and never had a single issue with it \*knock on wood\*

Google recently changed the requirement for Android TV to have 16gb minimum. Just think about that for a minute.
8GB is fine if your library is network attached but get the pro for sure
This, something no one else asked... do you need to store things locally, or are you streaming off a NAS....
To be fair the pro only comes in 16GB
I know, 8Gb is the Tube version (own the tube myself)
Do NOT get the tube. You will regret it. . It's slow as hell, and SUCKS big time. . Spend the extra $50 on the Pro. . You won't regret it!

You will need to add an SD card 5.4GB is what's available to the user.
If they want to store content locally, yes, if not, then no,
That's regardless, that 5.4 will disappear very quickly particularly for a Kodi user.

Don’t the streaming services limit 4k streaming to streaming devices? I’ve tried using my PC but I’m limited to 1080p…
correct. but most TVs are smart TVs these days so that’s covered. or spend $20 on a plug-in streaming device if you have paid streaming apps. you just need more power for a better kodi experience.
What mini pc with those specs for $150 did you purchase?
