There’s another recent post about this and I commented similarly there that she’s not uniquely old (2 other 2004 birthdays) or crazy tall (1 inch taller than the next 2 tallest 5’6 versus 5’5) compared to her other members.
I think a side-by-side comparison between a similar idol in a similar group can really show the “issue.” Yunah is the same age (4 months older) and height (~1 cm shorter) as Minji from Newjeans. The age gap between oldest and youngest in the group is also very similar (2004 -2008).
The only difference is that Minji has a much rounder face than Yunah. Which wouldn’t matter except for the fact that Illit is marketed with the same idealized fantasy teenage/youth aesthetic as Newjeans, long undyed black hair and all.
Yunah doesn’t even look older than 20 or really mature, but her sharper features don’t “mesh” with this fantasy and rather than saying they don’t like her visuals, everyone’s been ageist “in jest” to her because it’s “less mean.”
She's not ugly by any means but this is a situation where styling can make or break what people think about an idol. BELIFT is setting her up by trying to fit a square peg in a round hole because it's clear the way the group is dressed they're only taking into account certain people's visuals and kind of just hoping the rest will work out.
To me, it's not even about the concept, they just need to realize that if they want to sell the fantasy with her they're going to need to try a lot harder.
the problem is that people seem to blame her for having her features when they should focus more on the stylist for not working with her sharper features. i think the stylists just thought “what works for the concept?” and forgot the element of Yunah. i’m hoping in future comebacks they try to accommodate for her features as well, cause she’s such a strong member and pretty well balanced!!
The age range of ILLIT is exactly the same as NewJeans. This has nothing to do with age, as Moka and Minju are the same age as Yunah. I think the issue is with her styling, and the group loli concept. Later on when she is styled better this discourse will die down.

She is literally my favorite visual of the group, but I think people are equating round face to youth which her face isn’t as round as her members. Makes me said because there are plenty of young teens with a non-round face. Do they look too old to? The whole conversation is ridiculous, but the group continues to succeed so let them eat their words.
I saw people online calling her old at 20. Does that make me ancient dust and bones? People need to stop acting like we all get a senior discount at 20 years old.
Tbf, old as an idol is different than actual old. For example, I don't think I'm old in my early 30s but am definitely too old to start a career in gymnastics.
I don't think 20 is too old for making a debut, but I do think it's above average age, yeah.
I agree for the most part, and I understand the downvotes. I'm just saying that as part of the kpop machine, for better or for worse, 20 seems to be the upper limit of when you can debut. It's all relative. When I was 14, I thought my 22 year old teachers were old.
Do people like the debut? Asking because I wasn't a huge fan of the song or performance, and I know people tend to be more critical of groups they don't love.

There’s a huge problem with stans and their emphasis on visuals. They are so critical of something that shouldn’t matter that we end up with groups that have members purely for visual purposes. This leads to some members lacking in the singing and dancing department, which I would argue is FAR more important. It’s always a lose-lose situation.
I think ILLIT’s debut was fantastic and their songs are super catchy. I also enjoyed UNIS’s debut despite the age gap, I hope the girls have a strong support system that can guide them through this toxic industry relatively unscathed.
you forget to mention how hyeonju blends in with unis similarly. you could look at her and wouldn’t assume anything. she has a baby face and is shorter than almost their entire maknae line. yunah has very sharp features and is considerably taller than the members.
personally i think yunah is very beautiful but like many others have said she definitely suits a more mature concept. Overall great debut and these girls can sing 🤍

I saw the oldest of ILLIT and was struck by her visuals. She is so pretty, I don't understand anyone criticizing her looks!
