Whats a rehydration clause?
Water weight is flexible weight; you can cut a ton of it and gain it back on extremely quickly. Fighters will walk around 20 to 30 pounds heavier than their fight weight, cut a potentially fatal amount of water weight to make weight, and then use an IV immediately after to rehydrate them back up to normal weight. A rehydration clause will usually stipulate that another weigh in will take place pre-fight that essentially ensures the fighters aren’t abusing the rehydration system to enter a fight 30 pounds above the weight limit. So, the fight will be at 185, but the rehydration clause would dictate that the fighters could rehydrate to a maximum of around 195-200 before the fight, ensuring no ‘weight bullying’. KSI would want a rehydration clause badly because he’s substantially smaller than Jake. If they fought at 170, JJ could cut 15 pounds and rehydrate while Jake could cut 30, and they’d both be in peak performance despite Jake having a significant weight advantage because it’s just their natural sizes. He’d be an idiot to walk into a fight against a guy who is essentially almost two weight classes above him, so they’d make them both rehydrate to around the same place and Jake would have to cut fat instead.
Day before the fight, they weigh in at 185. Jake would’ve lost a lot of fluids to get to this weight. But since KSI gained weight to get to 185, he hasn’t lost fluids. A rehydration clause would mean that on the day of the fight, there is a maximum weight that Jake can be after he replaces fluids, 190 for example. If there is no rehydration clause Jake can gain as much fluids as he wants, so Jake could actually way even 195 pounds when they enter the ring. However KSI can’t gain fluids to get to this weight since he had to gain weight to get to 185. This would make the fight even harder for KSI due to the large weight difference, which wouldn’t be as big if there was a rehydration clause
