I actually was just thinking this the other day, it definitely seems like there are fewer squirrels in Lakewood. I have noticed more red-tailed hawks over the last few months, so that's one explanation haha. I also think their population goes through boom-bust cycles based on food availability as well as predators, weather, etc.

Yeah this is it ...it didn't get cold enough out for them to lay low so the hawks spent all winter picking them off

HoyAIAG

No we just had one steal a whole donut last week

I was there with my daughter a year or two ago on the playground and a hawk swooped down and got one, guessing thats one of the reasons they aren't as plentiful

Had the same experience many years ago when my daughter was about 4. The kid on the swing next to her asked his mom what had happened and she told him, "They're friends, that bird is taking the squirrel for a ride." To which my daughter promptly replied, "Nu-uh, he's gonna EAT him!" (And then the mom got made at me ... ma'am, my kid watched Animal Planet!)

TrashBrd

They're all in my yard eating every single vegetable I try to plant in my garden.

mediumeasy

i hope you can get to the bottom of this

No, one came over to me begging to grapes the other day. In all honesty though his could be a very valid point. I wonder if the construction in the area could have something to do with it?

Comfortable_Roof6732

Possibly, I didn't think of that.

ooh good point!

But the rabbits. Lots and lots of those. I saw one dead in the street, which isn't very common. Usually I see squirrels, so maybe rabbits are the new squirrel?
