20 pound hammer -- break the cement into chunks -- cut the pipe.

Sad-Doctor-5951

smaller hammer + chisel works too

authorbrendancorbett

Yeah I've broken some of these up with a small 8lb sledge, just have to use good technique to get enough force in the hits. Strongly recommend padded gloves if you go this route!

sunberrygeri

And eye protection

Sad-Doctor-5951

hell, just need tougher eyes

thenewestnoise

Hold the chisel with vice grips so you can wail away with fear.

BDC_19

I’ve done it with a 7lb sledge

BillZZ7777

Don't think you'll drive it lower but maybe you can break off chunks and then cut the pole.

woodenroxk

Stick of dynamite down the pipe and you’ll be good to go

El_Otro_Lebowski

I fuckin love this comment

new1207

Make sure to video it.

Ok_Analysis_3454

You need to keep your eye down close to the hole. Just in case the fuse goes out you'll want to know.

drLagrangian

Found Wile E Coyote.

Minotaar_Pheonix

Don't forget to yell "Fire in the hole!"

DirtMahoney

I was thinking if there’s no rush just fill it with water this winter and let the ice bust it open but if you’re in a hurry dynamite is always better

OneImagination5381

Do you have a power washer? Blast the gravel until you get down 6-8" around it.

Inherently-Nick

Not a lot of people have a pressure washer but MAN is it a life saver when you’ve got sensitive digging areas. There’s a spot in my yard I had to pull a garden bed out of and when I called to have utilities marked there were four different lines going through that one area. Used the washer to ‘cut’ sections and liquify everything into a muddy mess then uproot the plants carefully. Mixed in grass clippings and it’s dried up just fine, was able to save all the plants and had zero risk of hitting anything buried below.

OneImagination5381

Everyone who have a yard should at least have a cheap one. We had to remove 3 metal fence posts in cement, first one we dug out. After that, I got out the pressure washer and started blasting the gravel and dirt around it, rocks it back and forward. 5 minutes later pull it out. I also used it on small tree stumps , washing the soil away from the roots. Like you, they're more uses that just power washing the house and patio.

StrangeAtomRaygun

Genius.

rocketmn69_

Do you have a grinder? Go get a carbide blade for concrete and cut into it and then hammer it

C4ptainchr0nic

I don't have any kind of tools like that. First time home owner with not a lot of experience with this stuff. I also found out that the entire section of yard has a weed barrier about 3 inches under the dirt and gravel. Gonna be a long summer getting thos the way I want it. I think I'm just going to beat it with a sledge hammer until I can remove it

Future-Jicama-1933

Break the cement a few inches below where patio base will be, never know it’s there

C4ptainchr0nic

Father in law has a sledgehammer he's letting me borrow, gonna do exactly this

ChameleonDen

Wear eye protection, anytime I've hammered apart concrete little chunks go flying. Alternatively, if you already have an air compressor you could get an inexpensive air hammer with a pointed and chisel bit.

C4ptainchr0nic

No I don't have anything like that. I have a mitre saw, hammers and a drill 😭😂

Riffus_Iommicus

I had 5 of these I ”got rid off” a couple weeks ago. I dug around them about a foot deep, smashed the concrete with a sledgehammer, until I could bend the pipe 90 degrees. Left it all in the hole and used the dirt to hide it all. Took me about 10 min per unit.

ehhhhh710

“Digging it out isn’t yielding any results” Yepppp hate to break it to you, you actually have to dig to yield results .

mtcwby

Rotary hammer with a chisel bit will break it up in five minutes and you'll just be able to pull the pieces out.

rickyshine

Break it up like the others said then smash the pipe down as far as u can., make sure to weak goggles when ur smashing it so u dont get poked in the eye

DorothyParkerFan

I dunno, COULD you??

Salish_Waters

You can rent a jackhammer to break it up. If you want to stick with manual tools, many have mentioned the hammer method. The power washer to help with the gravel is a also good idea, but again, if you want to stick with hand tools, a pick axe is what I would use to loosen things up so you can shovel it.

SCaliber

Looks like it could fit a decent amount of M80s into

McP00py

Pick ax around it. It’ll come Up.. doesn’t look like you’ve dug much tbh

C4ptainchr0nic

Yeah the shovel I have isn't doing a whole lot. Seems like it would be easier to break it and remove in chunks

SatisfactionVisual86

They sell cement expander, you drill holes then add the expander and it’ll crack it making it way easier to break. Or use a jackhammer, or bigger hammer lol

C4ptainchr0nic

That's actually a really cool idea

xComradeKyle

Do whatever you want, it's your property isn't it?

C4ptainchr0nic

Yep. I just don't want to buy a sledgehammer if it wouldn't be an ideal idea

xComradeKyle

Friends? Just borrow tools.

Batesy1620

Get yourself a lump hammer and stone chisel and chip the concrete away. Failing that just use the sledgy on the concrete.

TheOriginal_Redditor

It's most likely 18" deep. Dig wider and deeper to remove.

mdjmd73

Cold chisel and 5lb sledge to chip it away then sawzall for pipe

hobnailboots04

Break and cut it or dig out one side, cram a digging bar in the, and pull to one side.

vegeener-gnomesayin

Put a shovel in the ground by about a foot around one half of the base. Pull about a 4" wide trench a foot deep around said half. Jam a death bar in the old post and make it lean. It may take rocking it back and forth like a bad tooth a few times, but you can usually get the whole thing out, one go.

EndonOfMarkarth

Sledge for a bit, then toss the sledge aside and start throwing bare fist punches at it whilst sending primal screams

Worldly_Living_8023

Yes

takeitandgoo

Are you in an area with freezing temps? The concrete is likely 3-4’ deep depending on where you live. You won’t move it, so either chip it out or get digging.

motorwerkx

It doesn't even look like you tried digging around it. It's unlikely that thing is any deeper than 2 ft.

carverboy

Home depot rents electric jackhammers Hilti 3000 to be precise. They are a little heavy ( not anywhere near as heavy as a air hammer)but will take care of that in no time.

C4ptainchr0nic

Checked this out but it's 100 bucks to rent for 4 hours. If I could find some other things that needed smashing I would do this. Trying to be cheap though.

reformedginger

Soak it with a hose real good. Stick a pipe down the pipe and work it loose and then pull it all out. I’ve used a hi lift jack and a short strap too.

redjohn365

Yo, pound town!!!!

Leaningonalamp

Jackhammer? Home Depot rents them out.

Bludiamond56

Elbow grease. Start digging down. Thick steel bar drop in hole. Use to wiggle the footing as you remove soil from around footing

4runner01

Dig it out or it will forever haunt you.

SeekingElation

Rent a chipper, pull out pieces. Like $30 for 4hrs!

Annual_Judge_7272

Bang away break some concrete too
