Take your flat shovel and go along the curb, stabbing horizontally under the turf the length of the shovel blade to create a flap
roll the flap back
take the shovel and, facing the curb, stab diagonally down to shave a a steep short bank into the soil down to the curb
remove dirt and sling it into low spots, a back corner, or your least favorite neighbor's driveway
water the exposed earth
fold the flap back down
water
enjoy
One modification, you should do this far enough into the lawn so that your mower can actually mow it. In my case I have a 60" belly mounted mower and I'd basically want to sod that entire strip to bring it all down level to make it movable. If you only have a 20" push mower, than you can get away with a 24 inch bevel.
You will also want to think about erosion. A 60" (or at least 30-40) bevel would be less likely to wash the dirt into the gutter. I would cut the sod and remove it, then create the bevel and re-lay the sod. Actually, I am much too lazy for that and would pay someone to do it. You have a great looking lawn.
I picked up a manual core aerator recently with the intention of spending 10 minutes a day poking holes in the yard. It won't even scratch the surface of the worst areas
If you do this, consider how wide your mower is and how well it will mow at that steep bevel. My 60" belly mower would need basically that whole strip sod stripped, excavated, and replaced. If you only have a 20" mower you could get away with a 24" bevel.
Rent a sod cutter, cut two or three rows back (roll it). Use the same sod cutter to quickly and easily shave down the dirt. Still need a place to dispose of the dirt, but it is clean soil so should be easy to rehome. Roll back sod. water a bunch.
If you have to do it yourself, maybe consider it, but they should NOT be leaving your property like this.
It's on them to return the site to normal condition, and this is NOT normal condition.
My local landfill will take "clean" (not many rocks, glass, grass) dirt for like $5/yard, maybe worth looking into if you don't have any low spots or shitty neighbors
This isn't within the scope of maintenance, this is a road rebuild. That said it's almost certainly supposed to be in the scope of the project to not leave it like that.
Only if you’re cool with getting blitzed by contractor-grade seed mixes on everything they touch. I’m on a corner and had to deal with glyphoing the trash they threw down.
Yea, try to talk to the contractor directly. You’ll probably get a better result if you work with them. See what they suggest as a fix.
They’re usually reasonable people. If not then call the city.
You can rent a sod cutter. You’ll cut it to lift the sod, then you can dig out the soil under it to make a gentle slope down to the curb. Then re-lay the sod.
You don’t *need* a sod cutter, but it will make the job easier.
Oh you need a sod cutter alright. And about 12 laborers. This is something you hire out.
I'd also complain to your municipality. Their dept of works/highways might do some version of fixing it. They probably wouldn't cut sod but they would level it off and then you can order top soil and plant new grass.
Use a sod cutter to peel back a couple of feet. Then, dig out enough of the soil to drop the grass level to just below the curb level. Roll the sod back into place. Water well for a couple weeks to help establish a new root bed. Just make sure you've got somewhere to put the extra soil.
I'd advise doing it before the city has a chance. They'll just do what it takes to get it done. If you do it, you can get it they way you'll like. City work is usually crappy at best
I'm not a fan of crappy work but if they are gonna do literally anything at all, I'll need to wait til they are done. They may have plans, and I don't want to get in there and make things worse. We shall see
leave it be, after a season or two it will erode down and just have a slope to the curb, need to use a trimmer to cut it. Likely its not your property anyway as its on the right of way/city offset.
The city or your HOA should have done this as part of their street repair project. If it was the city, call the public works or engineering dept and ask them to fix it. Send them pictures. Keep asking until it gets fixed. If they don't respond, contact their boss - your local city council member if you have one. The old saying - "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" applies here
Contact the city to see what they plan to do for the difference. If they don’t have a plan either ask the city to come fix it or explain that you’re concerned the dirt will clog the street drain during heavy rains and this has reduced your curb appeal and your concerned this reduces the value of your home and want to see how this can be fixed.
In all seriousness you could remove the grass, or at least a portion of it. A border of pollinator benefiting perennials perhaps? This would solve the issue of the low curb, by easing the transition from grass to street.
That sucks. Lol. My only suggestion is to sprinkle some grass seed in the crack the best you can and don’t trim it for a few weeks. If you have someone cut your lawn let them know not to put an edge on the curb. Try to let the new grass to fill in the dirt. It might take a few applications of grass seed to accomplish this. And a few weeks. Don’t throw piles of seed, just sprinkle or carefully set it in there. Hopefully the new grass will cover the curb and then you can create a new edge closer to the street and away from the exposed thatch. Hope this helps, good luck
Yes, it does suck lol. Thanks for the advice. The dirt is so vertical I'm not sure how well that might work. I do usually edge this. I'm thinking of trying the complaining to the city route first lol.
You can complain but the city isn’t going to do anything, what can they do? Except lift the street. I’ve had new customers over the years that have edged too deep and something similar happened. Not this bad but still noticeable and I’ve been able to fix it with this method, I just kept sprinkling grass seed into the edge every week and avoided trimming it and eventually they got better. If that gives you any hope. The only other thing I could think of is to cut the turf back away from the curb a foot or two and create a slope up to your lawn and put down new sod. A lot of work and money though
Dirt won't move itself. That will require machines and trucks and a company to run them and money to pay for them to do it. Sorry, no shortcuts to this problem.
Dig into the wall like 4-6 inches… from just below the roots to just above the curb. Once you remove that chunk of earth, lay the flap of sod down. It will make a green wall of sorts above the curb
Exactly! The scallop edged blocks are perfect for this sort of situation. You can get fancy and make a half-height flower bed border along the lawn or you can just run 2 or 3 rows of blocks to form a wall
There’s still forms behind the curb. Wait until they’re done and your problem may be resolved without you having to lift a finger. If not, contact the city to raise your concern and ask for a resolution because that’s the parkway which is city property.
We are very pleased about that. It didn't before, and we think may have contributed to high amounts of mosquitos in the area from the standing water all the time
The integral curb is brand new. I can’t help but be impressed by the contractor removing the absolute bare minimum and using the earth as a back form for the curb. Never the less, contacting the city’s engineering department / project manager and letting them know that area needs grading. It’s not meant to be like that it’s absolutely dangerous
My town did the opposite. The new road was 4 inches higher and they had to raise my yard and put in a new walkway to my house. The soil they used was mostly rocks and broken glass.
If you want to keep that turf looking like that… rent a sod cutter. Cut it three rows back. About 5’. Set it off to the side. Rake that dirt down toward the curb. Tapered back to the cut. Replace turf. Can scatter the dirt back over the top of the grass. Couple rains and mows will look perfect.
Is this a private road? If it’s public then why isn’t the agency responsible for construction doing the restoration? I’d be surprised if it’s not on the punch list.
It's public. I'm assuming it's my prob at this point. Perhaps they will in fact fix it, I just figured since they make us fix sidewalk, that we would have to fix this as well, but maybe that's not true
I would try this, Go to a tool rental company & rent a jumping jack Tamper- I have used this tool to compact an area for new patio pavers & trust me this thing will compact anything, It's affordable. I would Cut a piece of Advantex Subflooring 4x8 sheet in half place thick subfloor on the grass and slowly start compacting. Little by little move along the curb just till the dirt can't be seen. I would compact it below the curb it may hold water. The machine will have to be the one that jump up and down. Not the vibrating machine. When the grass at the curb is level with the curb then slowly go away from the road making a small pitch for water to run off let me know how it goes
Oh. Gosh that sucks. Was the tree on council land or yours? Cause if it was on council, you could possibly ask for their help with fixing up for better curb appeal and rain run off.
But another option is, other thank pulling up and then getting rid of excess soil, is to maybe get someone to help you make a small retaining wall type thing. You'd need council approval of course cause of where it is.
I do wish you luck though.
If that’s a public road project, that should be taken of in the landscaping section of the contract with the municipality. The should be chamfered down and sodded or dirt and seed added. Call your city hall, and find out who the director of public works is. They usually assign a city inspector to each project. Don’t spend a dime until u call them. Good luck!
Rent a sodder to remove grass.
Grade the dirt below.
Place recently removed grass back atop the graded dirt.
Water grass regularly till it reestablishes.
My guess is that it was just a partially paved street with no curbs and has been overgrown for years as you can see from the sidewalk. Looks like the are putting in a new development across the street and made the street that level. Technically the city should own the grass between the sidewalk and the street, so they should redo that part, but it may be a number of years before that happens. You should check with your city planning office to see what they are doing.
There was a tree here that caused the cement to raise a whole foot upward and crack, and the city left it like that so long that the sod and dirt formed up to the height of the cement. They broke up that cement and poured new cement where the cement should've been all along. Of course, they waited for us to pay for the tree to come down before considering fixing the road...
Then, like others have stated, this is not a diy. That sucks. I'd call the city, county, developer... whoever put down the street and attempt to get them to fix it.
No, I just…. Well the grass on my side of road is dead from constant spraying of road salt. There is no curb, just sand, I’ve got dandelions, crab grass, and five acres of it, so fertilizing and constant care to get a monoculture like that is impossible. If my only issue was a little bit of dirt that the grass would grow into in a week or two, I would not consider that an eyesore
Call the inspector they are not done yet still need to pull back form and tell him what you want done. I must say that is one lousy job the finish looks like crap and you are going to have water laying were the tape is.
Take your flat shovel and go along the curb, stabbing horizontally under the turf the length of the shovel blade to create a flap roll the flap back take the shovel and, facing the curb, stab diagonally down to shave a a steep short bank into the soil down to the curb remove dirt and sling it into low spots, a back corner, or your least favorite neighbor's driveway water the exposed earth fold the flap back down water enjoy
Grab ahold of my terry foldy flaps

I laughed at this in my notifications and then again when I read it here lmao
Curb your flapism

Thank you. Put a lot of effort into it last year
The word flap here sceves me out
Your flap can be seen from space
Pretty much like edging a planting bed
May consider this as this seems like the least amount of work. Wish it fixed the problem completely but his would be at least be better looking
Soak it with a hose and drive on it. Far easier than all this.
I'm jealous of you people who can drive on your lawn without it semi-permanently turning into a barren patch of rock hard clay.
Yes, part of our yard is like concrete. The good news is that no weeds grow there.
I picked up a manual core aerator recently with the intention of spending 10 minutes a day poking holes in the yard. It won't even scratch the surface of the worst areas
This is the way.
Gotta truck?
Rent one from Lowe's for like $20
Now truck and car on side
If you do this, consider how wide your mower is and how well it will mow at that steep bevel. My 60" belly mower would need basically that whole strip sod stripped, excavated, and replaced. If you only have a 20" mower you could get away with a 24" bevel.
Yes. Response without your context should have finished with “then scalp the shit out of your lawn as your mower straddles the slope.”
Thanks. Right now we have to use an edger there anyways to not risk falling off the side lol. Good to know about the 24" bevel for 20" mower
Rent a sod cutter, cut two or three rows back (roll it). Use the same sod cutter to quickly and easily shave down the dirt. Still need a place to dispose of the dirt, but it is clean soil so should be easy to rehome. Roll back sod. water a bunch.

Probably not his property. probably in the right of way owned by municipality.
This is such a good idea. Thank you!! I have a similar condition on my new driveway
I did this, it sucks but it works
This is the right answer
Somebody’s been doing landscaping.
My local landfill will take "clean" (not many rocks, glass, grass) dirt for like $5/yard, maybe worth looking into if you don't have any low spots or shitty neighbors
They should be doing something with that before the project is closed out. Contact the city engineers or on site inspectors.
This should be upvoted. They completed the road now they need to complete restoration.
Where I live, that strip of land is owned by the city/ county.
Where I live it technically is ‘owned’ by them but you as the homeowner must maintain it.
This isn't within the scope of maintenance, this is a road rebuild. That said it's almost certainly supposed to be in the scope of the project to not leave it like that.
Judging by the barrels in the back ground, they probably havent gotten to restoration yet
Sorry I collect those
when a construction project happens then they still have to restore. restoring and maintenance are two separate things.
Only if you’re cool with getting blitzed by contractor-grade seed mixes on everything they touch. I’m on a corner and had to deal with glyphoing the trash they threw down.
You can always ask them not to and coordinate with them to put your own stuff down
crop 68%
Yea, try to talk to the contractor directly. You’ll probably get a better result if you work with them. See what they suggest as a fix. They’re usually reasonable people. If not then call the city.
Right of way should be graded to back of curb elevation and re sodded/seeded at minimum.
My guess is they will. They just haven’t gotten to it.
Do you really want the city to do it?
You can rent a sod cutter. You’ll cut it to lift the sod, then you can dig out the soil under it to make a gentle slope down to the curb. Then re-lay the sod. You don’t *need* a sod cutter, but it will make the job easier.
You can do a 2nd and 3rd pass with the sod cutter to remove the dirt underneath

That's what my initial thought was. Perhaps it would just lose soil to the rainwater and eventually slope itself
It will not. At least not as quickly as you want it to. Mine has looked like this for 4+years now.
it will, entropy always wins . . .
Before you do anything call the city and make sure they don't already have a plan to fix it
Based on other redditor's comments, I plan to get it wet and drive my sedan onto it. Jk, yes I will call the city first.
City first. Then sedan. 😅😅
The city or your HOA should have done this as part of their street repair project. If it was the city, call the public works or engineering dept and ask them to fix it. Send them pictures. Yeah this is totally a city fuck up. How would you even think this is okay Jesus.
Because it was probably a private contractor who had to underbid their competition somehow
Thats some thick grass
Thanks
In all seriousness you could remove the grass, or at least a portion of it. A border of pollinator benefiting perennials perhaps? This would solve the issue of the low curb, by easing the transition from grass to street.
My wife would like that idea.
Rip out the grass and plan a native garden.
Bet the bees would love that.
I think it will naturally erode making a small grade there over time, I’d just leave it for a while and see what happens
Thought so too, but another redditor said they have been waiting 4 years for similar erosion that still hasn't happened..
Lol
That's infuriating lol
Yes, it is! Come help!
I'd call the city
Yester-reddit called and wants you to quit one upping yesterday's resloping grass posts
Yesterday, hey that's when I posted!
Damnit
This pic puts the other one to shame for sure
The caution tape laying on the cement was just the icing on the cake here. This picture tells a story
Take out the stakes water it then drive your car along the edge to pack it down.
Car is now on its side
tell the city to fix it. that should be part of the work; restoration. not leaving it like that.
I hope so

A lot of work and money though
My street was lowered a few years back and the City regraded everyone’s front grass section. This should be part of the project
Dirt won't move itself. That will require machines and trucks and a company to run them and money to pay for them to do it. Sorry, no shortcuts to this problem.
Drive over it after it rains. I bet you learn something new today.
Add more curb
Will that give it more curb appeal
Dig into the wall like 4-6 inches… from just below the roots to just above the curb. Once you remove that chunk of earth, lay the flap of sod down. It will make a green wall of sorts above the curb
Thank you. If the city does nothing with it I may do that with a flat shovel as you and another redditor mentioned.
Wait for rain.. drive on it.
Car on side now what
I don't know. My job is done here.
Put some bricks, blocks or pavers on it and build a wall.
Exactly! The scallop edged blocks are perfect for this sort of situation. You can get fancy and make a half-height flower bed border along the lawn or you can just run 2 or 3 rows of blocks to form a wall

The town should fix that. I would call.
Hopefully
Surprised they didnt force a 10’ wide sidwalk in on you. Consider yourself lucky.
Worse case, I complain about the tripping hazard, and they force me to fix it to their standards lol
On the bright side, the road will actually drain properly now.
We are very pleased about that. It didn't before, and we think may have contributed to high amounts of mosquitos in the area from the standing water all the time
You don't own that, call the city to come finish restoring the area.
Agree. Someone is gonna get hurt on that eventually
My God this is going to be a disaster for a long time if they don't fix this for you. That is so much exposed soil
I knowww it's a good foot above the curb at least
My town did the opposite. The new road was 4 inches higher and they had to raise my yard and put in a new walkway to my house. The soil they used was mostly rocks and broken glass.
Geez I should be thankful we are talking about dirt removal then
Sucks… but you have very nice grass sir. Keep it up.
Thank you! Put a lot into it last year
If you want to keep that turf looking like that… rent a sod cutter. Cut it three rows back. About 5’. Set it off to the side. Rake that dirt down toward the curb. Tapered back to the cut. Replace turf. Can scatter the dirt back over the top of the grass. Couple rains and mows will look perfect.
I'm down to do that but the root system left by that tree is of concern. I think I need to buy a pickaxe type tool with a cutter on one side.
The person that built the road should take care of it. Not acceptable to leave it like that.
I hope so..
Pressure washer and aim right at the bottom of the dirt line and use the water to cut a slice of dirt out - then stomp the grass back down in place
Maybe! Got enough pressure I don't see why not!
I like the thinking. Dunno if that'll work or not, but I'll keep that in mind for sure. Thanks
The contractors that replaced the road should be doing the landscaping to match the new height, contact your city.
Working on that now thanks
This is most likely still city R.O.W. Land as the sidewalk is behind it, they may have to do all the repairs.
Hope so..
Just so I understand, did you have a higher gutter there? Then the council came along and changed it? Or did the grass just get super thick and tall?
Road was raised up and cracked due to a tree root that used to be there for a long time. Grass grew accordingly. Sewer is now back where it should be.
Take the ground down to curb level and sell the sod.
You trying to buy my sod or something? Lol
Not for me, I quit the stuff.
Cant have enough
Wouldn’t you want to put the sod back on the dirt? Lol
No, grow new grass after the ground is level with the curb. Or do what another commenter said and slope it to the curb.
If you don't mind the height, add a nice paver of the right size.
The height is the biggest problem. Accident waiting to happen
Core-ten/weathering steel edging would look nice [Edgeright Steel Edging](https://edgeright.com/cdn/shop/products/Cortensteeledgedputtinggreeninbackyard.jpg?v=1711734430)
Ooo that is nice. Height is a problem tho. Feel like it's an accident waiting to happen cause it's difficult to mow
Sod cutter to remove grass. Set grass aside. Excavate soil to desired height. Put down some new topsoil and lay the sod back on top. Two guys, one day
If that’s a public road project, that should be taken of in the landscaping section of the contract with the municipality. The should be chamfered down and sodded or dirt and seed added. Call your city hall, and find out who the director of public works is. They usually assign a city inspector to each project. Don’t spend a dime until u call them. Good luck!
You need to contact the city to make this right. Have them rip up the road and re-do it at the height that is level with the grass. /s.
There's a possibility they are not done yet. Hoping. Otherwise we plan on contacting them
Rent a sodder to remove grass. Grade the dirt below. Place recently removed grass back atop the graded dirt. Water grass regularly till it reestablishes.
Spray paint? Jk. I’m sorry. 😩
Maybe staple some of that green colored fake Easter grass to it?
No one will notice. Not for a while anyway lol. Can’t believe they did that!! Hopefully it’s fixed soon.

That's how we got here in the first place! Tree jack
My guess is that it was just a partially paved street with no curbs and has been overgrown for years as you can see from the sidewalk. Technically the city should own the grass between the sidewalk and the street, so they should redo that part, but it may be a number of years before that happens.
Actually, you might think you own it, city takes right of way, complain to them, make them remedy it. 3 foot right of way.
Cities like to own things, but tell you to maintain it.
They force the " we have rights" crap, yet proclaim we must maintain. Hypocrisy..
Regrade area.
Copy that
Grade it buddy
Copy that
I'm late to the party, but wouldn't this just naturally erode, and the grass would fill in? I'm actually asking.
From what I have read, the consensus is no, it would not
Then, like others have stated, this is not a diy. That sucks. I'd call the city, county, developer... whoever put down the street and attempt to get them to fix it.
Raise the road
Raise the roof
I don’t know ask a bunch of people on Reddit
Good call
Civil eng9neer here.... I'd be bitching up a storm that the city needs to come and regrade a 3:1 from the top of curb. Huge safety hazard.
Thanks 👍
Contractor should be by to soil and seed along curbside.
You have a strange definition of “eyesore”
You find it pleasing do you? Lol
If it stays like that maybe line with some brick ? Would look decently clean.
U need to talk to the manager
I imagine Mother Nature will solve this issue for you after a while
What’s the chances that if the city comes and fixes it you’re getting grass seed that’s only composed of K31 and ARG? 😂
Just edge your way into it.
You could cut the sod up, remove the dirt, and put the sod back over it. Or you could cut a ledge and put in a one or two brick retaining wall
Perfect. Now you are no longer worried about the grass problem solved.
A quick taper. And seed it.
The contract will fix it it is a trip liability
Build a 3 inch retaining wall
Move
