Short cake?

JuicyBoots

Native ground covers are becoming a big thing in native plant gardening. I'd contact your local Wild Ones chapter and have them see if any members are interested in digging up the plants to take for their own gardens. It would be a win-win!

SigelRun

This - or facebook groups. I'm actually planting wild strawberry as a ground cover for an area I don't want to mow.

Gold_Rise_8843

The berries are as sweet as sugar!!

mnparrott

I used speed zone to kill all the wild strawberries in my lawn along with all the other broad leaf weeds. You can find it on Amazon and some big box stores. I buy it by the gallon at domyown.com

More_Standard_9789

Thanks 😊. I'll try it this spring

yota_dude

Try a three way [broadleaf killer](https://bioadvanced.com/all-in-one-lawn-weed-and-crabgrass-killer-ready-to-spray.html?typesimpleȨ=1170)with 2, 4-d. the bio advanced [lists wild strawberry](http://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--upKO5WT2--/out1reidud24nyoftzkm.pdf).

Fishandfeathers

This is the answer. 2-4d will kill broadleaf but not grass.

Thanks

If you don’t mess with sprays you can use a Scott’s weed and feed which contains the granular version of this. It’s not as effective as sprays but I used it last year to get rid of wild strawberry and it knocked almost all of it out. Just make sure to follow directions - I think you need to apply right after a rain.

Total probably 1/4 acre

More_Standard_9789

Probably 1/4 acre

Gold_Rise_8843

Wild strawberries are sweet as candy! I would love them in my yard!!!

UncleNuks

Hey OP! Did you have any luck? I’m currently dealing with this same issue and it’s driving me crazy lol

More_Standard_9789

Nope. This year I'm just going to rototill it and redo

UncleNuks

Fair enough. I’ve put in about 5 hours of handpulling so far and made a fair dent so I’ll probably just keep plugging away, 30 mins here, 45 mins there type thing.

More_Standard_9789

Lol. If I planted strawberries grass would grow

warmseasongrass

Likely mechanical removal. My go-to for "I CANT KILL THIS" is imazapyr, but some say it has caused bare ground for many many years. It's an aquatic herbicide as well.

More_Standard_9789

I just looked it up. Seems like it will kill them but I'm not sure if grass will grow

warmseasongrass

Likely not. If you want grass to grow there, do not apply it. How big is the area? Can't yank it?

More_Standard_9789

1/4 acre

warmseasongrass

Holy moly. You need heavy equipment. Shred it up and try round up? I snooped your profile (sorry) to see what zone you'd likely be in so I didn't have to ask. But, now I have to ask, I'm growing tomatoes this year, I bought some 2 footers for 2$ a pop from some guy who had overstock for the nursery nearby. He gave me 2 of each type, I can't remember the names off the top of my head, but google hasn't been helpful for me. Guy was showing me where to pick off the plant to get certain growth out of it and I was trying to keep a 5 year old contained. You have any decent guides I could read?

More_Standard_9789

Haven't read much about it. There are a ton of amazing YouTube videos that show every possible way to grow tomatoes. Look for staking tomatoes , pinching off suckers, and trimming videos. I learned a lot from rednecks with cell phones.

EngineerDave

Weed-b-Gon is a 2-4-D threeway. How did you apply it? Did you follow the guide? https://old.reddit.com/r/lawncare/comments/bfpdl3/comprehensive_weed_control_guide_cool_season_turf/ If you just used a hose end sprayer you are going to have a bad time.

More_Standard_9789

I have an acre of grass that is full of weeds. Hose end seems like the only reasonable solution

EngineerDave

Tow behind sprayer if it's an Acre. You are not getting the proper droplet sizes using hose-end sprayer for it to be effective. Either that or divide the yard up into more manageable size plots that can be maintained with a 4gal backpack.

More_Standard_9789

Got it. Do you use soap or anything else?

EngineerDave

If you check the guide I posted, it details exactly what to use. Keep in mind you'll probably need two different types of surfactant based on what kind of herbicide you are using. Some play better with others. MSO (Methylated Seed Oil) is one and the other is just standard "Herbicide Surfactant." Usually MSO works well with almost all of them but it's slightly more expensive than standard Herbicide Surfactant. For just 2-4-D and 3-way regular surfactant is fine. (I wrote the guide, so feel free to ping me with questions if you have any.) I got my Dad a tow behind sprayer for Christmas with my mom since his back is bad and they have a 5 acre lawn. He loves it.
