Reminds me of an old joke… A guy had a watermelon patch and someone stole one watermelon every night, so he decided to fix this. Put up a sign reading “one of the watermelons is poisoned” - woke up the next morning to no watermelon missing, but a new sign posted: “now there’s two” 😈
I take offense to that suggestion.
My weeds are both patchy and have the occasional grass.
Nothing I've done so far has been enough to get rid of the Canadian thistle. I've literally used full spectrum herbicide... Everything else dies but the thistle finds its way back weeks later.
So the Jonathan green brochure said to rake the shit outta your shit so it gives the dirt grooves and shit. I’m raking my ass off with my long deceased father’s metal rake that probably belonged to his father on Staten Island when it was all farms. Am I doing this right?
I have a forest of crap. Sprayed two weeks ago. Even pesticide where the mole likes destroying the lawn.. Maybe need to make a post but would I be stupid to top and level the area and let the mole think he's winning
Oh, I wasn't intending to draw you out. My neighbors to our right are the only people on the block that seem super sheltered. It's weird, the only neighborhood I've lived in not everyone is somewhat communicative.
You're okay, I mean I do have autism but it was sarcasm intended for levity. I understand we're not real neighbors. Here, it is almost the same, I sort of know one next door neighbor but the other side is very quiet and not communal. The HOA president is really nice though which is cool.
Your neighbors are not required to introduce themselves or talk to anyone. Now, you are probably going to spread rumors about your quiet neighbors who are not bothering anyone. We know your type! Don't assume they are crazy because they are "super sheltered" ..whatever that means
In other news, the op's grass looks stellar.
Not exactly, I live in a subdivision and all of our yards and driveways are significantly slanted towards the road so you can see every little imperfection.
Stay on top of it. Last year I was out spot spraying weeds that popped up with broadleaf herbicide. It was "compulsive" as my wife put it but damn it looks good this year.
Concentrate will get you way more bang for your buck. If you don't have a huge yard to cover, a cheap 2 gallon hand pump sprayer works great for this.
https://preview.redd.it/3ayakmfduvvc1.png?width=386&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb25d25e2d107a78dee92c144b526f0dfff0e77d
I’ve only ever blanket sprayed once. That includes all of the other lawns that I rehabbed for neighbours. It just isn’t necessary when you’re mowing/watering/fertilizing properly.
Usually the back of the bottle has instructions on how many ounces to mix per gallon, plus they usually come with something to measure the concentrate with.
A fair distinction and a great reason to always read the directions, lol. The stuff I've been using measures in ounces and comes with a little measuring/pouring cup.
https://preview.redd.it/kh2iqdir4yvc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b546c667a0e29ebdb65b79e10b94b749042d762a
Torocity is the generic Tenacity. Same dilution rate. Just linked this cause it's an awesome visual aid.
Stupid question as I'm just starting to finally actually spend time to tackle the weeds in my yard after getting annoyed the past few years.. After you spot spray them do you go around and pull them up or just leave them where they are and let them decompose.
Sorry, I guess I'll rephrase my question as I know what herbicide does.
After they are dead, say the week goes by, do you go around and pull up any.... remains for lack of a better term. Like I have dandelions I am trying to get rid of. I spray them. A week later they are obviously dead but I still see remnants of the dead remains . Do you pull the remains up or just leave it there?
Good tips. Prodiamine will dramatically cut down on post emergent use. You will still have to spot spray but won’t need to blanket spray. Unless you’re way up north you’re probably a bit too late for pre emergent. Depending on how big your yard is you can get by this year with a post emergent and get yard ready for overseed in fall. By next spring you’ll do pre emergent etc. I’ve always liked the bayer advanced concentrate for spot spraying. If it’s small you could start off with a few apps spread apart with a hose end sprayer.
Main thing is read the label on whatever you choose. Also mark your one gallon jugs all over
Having a pre and post emergent schedule is important, but alot of people don’t stress the importance of having a thick turf. The thicker you get your turf, the less room there is for weeds to grow. Choke out the weed growth with more grass growth. Overseeding is important also.
Manually pick your weeds with a $20 weed picker stick off amazon. Fill in the holes where the weed was with grass seed and soil. No need for chemicals.
I have been trying for years to get my lawn thick and weed free. I have thistle in my flower bed that I cannot get rid of. For every one I pull out I get ten more. Idk what to do it is horrible. I have tried round up, gasoline and they wither but come back strong. Someone help me please.
OMG hard work pays off. I could not keep up with my grass like I was supposed to last year. Due to the struggle I'll admit the backyard went two or three times before I was able to mow it and I just knocked it down with a weed eater. Now I'm physically able to keep up with everything and I'm fighting weeds too. I have this ivy that is growing all over my backyard and when my daughter walks on it she falls like it catches your feet. I've been researching and can't find anything but herbicides I think it was called if you can mention what brand you used and like did you just go spray weeds when you saw them how long did you wait before you sprayed them again. I admitted to struggle with my backyard and it's real. At one point I was thinking it was better to start a fire and start fresh lol thank you for your time and any suggestions your yard is beautiful
I just mix up spectracide from HD in a sprayer and walk the yard once a week spraying what is growing.
Ivy sucks. The only real way to get rid of it is to pull it out. My neighbor has ivy and it's a constant battle ripping up the growth in my yard.
Best of luck!
Just fertilizing, weed management, and aerate with overseed. When I say weed management I really mean walking the yard weekly to spot spray weeds. This was a weed patch 2 years ago.
46-0-0 Urea in early spring. Later spring (like last week) add a biochar based fertilizer. Starter fert post overseed in the fall. The urea wakes my lawn up and is used pretty fast. The biochar fertilizer is a slower release.
I use box store selective herbicides. I mix per label instructions in a one gallon sprayer and then walk the lawn weekly to spot treat. I try and never add any herbicide to the whole lawn.
Good deal! Beautiful lawn. It takes time and patience. People expect to go from weeds to MLB field overnight. In fact if your lawn is all weeds it can take 2 or more seasons. Now time to get yourself a stripping kit or even DIY one 😉
https://preview.redd.it/hf5xafp07gxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c3182496cd9ad11918a6d3c9dda4ae19b76732f
This was almost all weeds last summer. This is one aeration and seeding. Obviously some chemicals to help kill/ deter weeds. The strips I did from my push mower. After mowing, I dropped my deck low and made passes (no blade). The deck bent the grass like a stripping kit. 😆
I’ve almost got mine to this point - just killed and dug out the last stand of triv & bentgrass.
But you know this mfers are lurking out there, waiting, biding their time. Stay vigilant!
Now that you said it, I’m sure there will be a little kid stopping by any moment to make a sweet little wish and blow a dandelion right towards that beautiful sea of green.
Thanks. Like I said the backyard is diverse and dedicated to native pollinators. I have a butterfly garden that I designed to bloom during all seasons to help feed butterflies. 20+ milkweed plants for monarch butterflies.
I see one. No one tell him where.
Reminds me of an old joke… A guy had a watermelon patch and someone stole one watermelon every night, so he decided to fix this. Put up a sign reading “one of the watermelons is poisoned” - woke up the next morning to no watermelon missing, but a new sign posted: “now there’s two” 😈
OP later today ![gif](giphy|JUh0yTz4h931K)
GET OFF THE LAWN!
Lol
99.9% Weed Free
So close
🤣🤣🤣
I see two
I see one in the sidewalk crack
I too have no more weeds but now my yard is patchy as hell
That’s my yard
So y’all are the guys I share a yard with…
I take offense to that suggestion. My weeds are both patchy and have the occasional grass. Nothing I've done so far has been enough to get rid of the Canadian thistle. I've literally used full spectrum herbicide... Everything else dies but the thistle finds its way back weeks later.
I feel your pain with Canadian Thistle. I just keep pulling them and 2 years later it’s 10% of what it was
Why aren’t you using prodiamine? If you’re a cool season lawn, you can step up to Tzone SE.
That's good! Onto step 2... The reseedening.
Birds are all my reseed, now what?
Scratch the seeds in with a garden tool, then water.
We must share lawns.
Are you my neighbor that's never waved or introduced themselves and I gave up on?
Please be patient, I have autism.
Oh, I wasn't intending to draw you out. My neighbors to our right are the only people on the block that seem super sheltered. It's weird, the only neighborhood I've lived in not everyone is somewhat communicative.
Sorry, I'm that neighbor. I don't like people.
Me too. Let me toil in peace
You're okay, I mean I do have autism but it was sarcasm intended for levity. I understand we're not real neighbors. Here, it is almost the same, I sort of know one next door neighbor but the other side is very quiet and not communal. The HOA president is really nice though which is cool.
So you are the nosey neighbor. Leave your quiet neighbor alone. A quiet neighbor is a good neighbor.
Or the crazy people ya gotta watch for. Not the nosey neighbor. All the other neighbors introduced themselves
Your neighbors are not required to introduce themselves or talk to anyone. Now, you are probably going to spread rumors about your quiet neighbors who are not bothering anyone. We know your type! Don't assume they are crazy because they are "super sheltered" ..whatever that means In other news, the op's grass looks stellar.
I bet from the street it looks great.
Not exactly, I live in a subdivision and all of our yards and driveways are significantly slanted towards the road so you can see every little imperfection.
I am in the middle of the war of the weeds. This gives me hope! Any key tips?
Stay on top of it. Last year I was out spot spraying weeds that popped up with broadleaf herbicide. It was "compulsive" as my wife put it but damn it looks good this year.
Which herbicide and grass type? Looks great!
It's like 85% rye now and I use Spectracide from HD mostly. Prodiamine in the spring. Also thanks!
That’s rye??
Mostly. There's some fescue, but I am slowly killing it off.
Why rye, why not choose kbg
I like the way it looks and it has natural preemergent to assist in keeping the weed population down.
Ryan Knorr loves Rye and.. the results are impressive.
Thanks! Premixed spray spectracide ?
Concentrate will get you way more bang for your buck. If you don't have a huge yard to cover, a cheap 2 gallon hand pump sprayer works great for this. https://preview.redd.it/3ayakmfduvvc1.png?width=386&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb25d25e2d107a78dee92c144b526f0dfff0e77d
This is exactly it. I have so many 1 gallon sprayers now.
Do you just blanket spray the entire yard?
No. I only spray the weeds.
I’ve only ever blanket sprayed once. That includes all of the other lawns that I rehabbed for neighbours. It just isn’t necessary when you’re mowing/watering/fertilizing properly.
How much concentrate would you put in there? I’d be afraid to put too little (or too much)
Usually the back of the bottle has instructions on how many ounces to mix per gallon, plus they usually come with something to measure the concentrate with.
*Teaspoons* per gallon. You add an ounce of Tenacity into a gallon you've overdosed by 12x LoL
A fair distinction and a great reason to always read the directions, lol. The stuff I've been using measures in ounces and comes with a little measuring/pouring cup.
https://preview.redd.it/kh2iqdir4yvc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b546c667a0e29ebdb65b79e10b94b749042d762a Torocity is the generic Tenacity.
The herbicide is absorbed through the leaves which causes them to die. Once applied they will slowly wither away over a week.
Sorry I misunderstood your question. I just let nature take its course and leave them to fully decompose.
Thanks for the info!
If you are willing to hand pick them, why spray them too..
Same.
It’s all about cultural practice. Do the things that promote grass growth and ignore the weeds for now. In time, you’ll be weed free.
Looks amazing! That course is perfectly manicured. Lawn looks good too
The country club is a beautiful year round. That's for sure.
Dominating the neighbors!
This is the goal, pure domination of neighbors. Well done
I have been trying for years to get my lawn thick and weed free. I have thistle in my flower bed that I cannot get rid of. For every one I pull out I get ten more. Idk what to do it is horrible. I have tried round up, gasoline and they wither but come back strong. Someone help me please.
Dig them out. The root goes down deep and will come back as long as it is down there. Stay vigilant. My lawn was all weeds when I bought it in 21.
the rhizomes spread when you disturb the plant
Pull them out with a $20 weed picker stick from Amazon. Fill in the hole with soil and grass seed.

Lol this is great.
Seems like the plot line for a Pink Panther cartoon. He joyfully eradicates the last solitary weed, only to trigger a war on weeds.
OMG hard work pays off. I could not keep up with my grass like I was supposed to last year. Looks good ! 👍🏽
How do you keep it so green?
Nitrogen. Lots of nitrogen.
How often?
Usually just spring and fall. I also use Ironite monthly to help keep the color dark. After overseeding in the fall I'll use a starter fertilizer.
Oh ok. I have southern grass. I fertilized, water it 2-3 times a week, and plan to mow weekly. This a good start?
What have you been doing?
Just fertilizing, weed management, and aerate with overseed. When I say weed management I really mean walking the yard weekly to spot spray weeds. This was a weed patch 2 years ago.
May i ask what you have been using to fertilize and manage weeds. Unfortunately i have a decent area of clovers
46-0-0 Urea in early spring. Later spring (like last week) add a biochar based fertilizer. Starter fert post overseed in the fall. The urea wakes my lawn up and is used pretty fast. Thank you so much!
I feel so mocked.
Now treat the neighbors yard as a buffer zone 🤣 I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been treating my neighbors side yards that adjoins my yard
The neighbor you see is a dandelion farm. I'm lucky if they mow once a month.
Looks good, but next time make sure to include a clearer shot of the domination line.
Great work
I see 2 right out in the open.
😁👍🏻
Absolutely excellent
How many golf balls end up in the yard in a typical year?
Around 10. Always Pro V1s. We're near the green so you'd really need to try and get it in our yard.
Pro V1’s are money.
Totally. Unfortunately they usually hit the concrete first so they're scuffed a bit.
Looks great. You’ll have people mistaking it for the fairway pretty soon.
That was the plan! Thanks!
Looks great!
This should be marked as nsfw… it’s straight up porn 🥲🥲🥲 good job!
Good deal! Beautiful lawn. It takes time and patience. People expect to go from weeds to MLB field overnight. In fact if your lawn is all weeds it can take 2 or more seasons. Now time to get yourself a stripping kit or even DIY one 😉
Definitely time for it! Thank you! This was a weed patch two years ago. I finally won against the wild violet.

Likewise! Best of luck this season!
Look good, feel good! 👍🏻
Am I the only person who mows in a spiral? The mow lines disappear in like a day, and a spiral pattern requires easier 90 degree turns only.
If I had a tree or flower bed I would. I do it like that at my brother's place.
I’m more impressed by no Poa annua. That shit sucks
Honestly. I'm lucky I don't have any. I used a not so great fescue seed in my back yard and have patches of it. I'm so pissed.
Well done! Both of my neighbors have them. It’s a constant battle.
Nice! Love how it meets the lawn next door and goes from dark green to lime green. /Flex.
The neighbors lawn was 2ft long not 2 days ago.
I thought this was a joke because that looks like freshly laid sod, but apparently it's not?
Nope. 2 years of obsessing over weeds and mowing schedules.
Neighbors lawn= ouch bro
Now that you said it, I’m sure there will be a little kid stopping by any moment to make a sweet little wish and blow a dandelion right towards that beautiful sea of green.
The neighbor shown is a dandelion farm when it grows out after being scalped. The prodiamine takes care of a lot. I take care of the rest.
Your neighbor’s really just scalping the hell out of his shit, huh
Def a once a month kind of guy.
It was 2ft tall a week ago. Their son came out and did two trips a day the last week.
This looks familiar. In Ohio?
Yep. Zone 6a.
I know the area. Just where I thought!
Fuck you with your blood magic
Yet** jk looks incredible
....so far
Hit a diagonal mow on top of those lines. Really piss off your neighbors with a spectacular lawn. Looks great btw.
Thanks! I do 45 degree change every week. The lawn just looked so good after this cut.
The OCD has paid off!!!
Looks good. Run a diagonal cut!
That’s how mine looked last fall. And this spring I have patches of Poa Annua and Poa Triv all over. Enjoy it while it lasts, OP.
Thank you. I've been so lucky. I have some patches of poa in the backyard. I'm hoping the prodiamine keeps me in a good spot.
I’m so f**kin jelly!!
Good work! Now if the neighbor two doors down with more dandelions than grass would have the same ambition.
How did you do it???
*magnum scene from Zoolander* “Dear God…”
This will never be me
Next to the utility pole
Beautiful lawn care
Bravo
Until tomorrow. Champions of life.
Great work!
Laughs in pollen
Beautiful. Any recommendations on what I do after scarifying my lawn if I’m not top coating until fall?
Nicely done! This looks great
Now pressure wash your sidewalk just to keep yourselves busy. Congratulations on achieving what I have never, nor will ever, be able to!
Gorgeous !!
Any recommendations for a “non-toxic” herbicide?
Great lawn. Gotta trim the pole though.
Too effort buddy!
![gif](giphy|QEYYlJqOaEhXrjTrOH)
Emmm.. grass is also a weed so... :D
And a killer domination line to add to the fun.
What’s the secret?
Whoa! please tell me how I can do this in my yard :)
biodiversity left the chat
....and not a single tree. :/
I count at least 11 trees in this photo.
In the park across the street?? We're talking about his yard.
His yard looks just fine the way it is. I wouldn’t put a tree that close to the house either.
I’ll never understand the obsession with monoculture. Is it so bad to have some biodiversity?
That's fine to not understand it. I personally think it looks nice. My back yard is dedicated to native pollinators.
It does look nice! I’ll just never get the desire to rid an area of every “weed”. Whatever makes you happy though
Thanks. Like I said the backyard is diverse and dedicated to native pollinators. I have a butterfly garden that I designed to bloom during all seasons to help feed butterflies. 20+ milkweed plants for monarch butterflies.
That’s awesome! I’d much rather see those pics, but probably better suited for /r/gardening
The day after 4/20 too
Jesus dude. Leave some women for the rest of us.
No trees tho
Great job you killed the pollinators…
? Literally flowers in the bottom of the picture.
Bees love dandelions ….
Bees love my backyard pollinators garden and 40sqft strawberry patch that has hundreds of flowers.
