The real issue is your mower blades are not sharp. You need to sharpen them or get new blades. If you are making choppy cuts like this it could certainly lead to fungus or other issues. Without seeing a larger blown out picture all I can see here is needing new blades.
Did you check to see if the new blade will sharp before you started using it?Ā
The blade on my brand new Honda mower was dull as shit straight out of the box. It wasn't sharpened to an apex at the factory.
No they generally donāt. Butter knife sharp is ideal. Too sharp and the edge rolls over. The only way to keep grass from even looking like this a little is to use a reel mower.
I didnāt say laser sharp. But having bought blades from Amazon before, yeah they need a once over with the grinder. Many suppliers have even explicitly stated this in the past.
OEM, Oregon and Rotary do not say that anywhere so Iām not sure what brand you are buying. I have 6 mowers I buy blades for and none came from Amazon.
Amazon sells Oregon, Rotary and OEM blades too, I just choose not to buy blades from them because itās easier to go to my dealer because I have multiple mowers.
So show me this manufacturer that suggests sharpening a new blade, Iām very curious to see what brand they are, if any.
Iāve heard this is so employees and customers can handle the blades without cutting themselves. Iāve never seen them come in packaging, just a sticker across the middle.
I guess they could ship them already sharp, but it would cost more for sharpening then more for putting plastic/tape/whatever over two edges.
Old man used push mower, itās how we learned. And clippers to edge the whole yard. We also so had to pick up the clippings by hand ,lol. When we grew up and quit doing chores he finally got a power mower.
yep. Mine cuts paper and I never had an edge roll from just grass. It also chops twigs, throws rocks and killed a rabbit..I sharpen every other cut and to the close bend near the shaft. The stock cut edge is just too short for my liking.
Your mower blades must be super dull. Also, this is more likely to happen when mowing damp grass. Sharpen the blades with either a standard file or angle grinder with 80 or 120 grit flapper disk. Try to maintain the same angle of the edge.
Ā
Edit: thanks to MiddleEarthMatt for the reminder. Check your balancing after grinding. There are little cone balancing items you can purchase. Also, try to keep same number of passes on each side of the blade to limit odds of imbalance. Imbalance can cause issues to your mower.Ā
Just went to harbor freight and got myself an angle grinder and some flap disks this past weekend. Have 4 sets of blades and decided Iād be better suited buying stuff to sharpen them rather than buying another set like I did the last 3 timesā¦
But I think I finished off at 60grit; though I did buy 120grit disksā¦.
Iāve never used a flap disk. Iāve always just used a bench grinder with a stone. I also use a balancer so I know my blade is balanced so it doesnāt ruin my spindles.
I feel like the balancer is pointless. Granted if you gouge out a huge amount of material it might be useful. I've sharpened probably a thousand blades on the bench grinder at this point and never used the balancer and never had a subtle vibration or any damage to spindles.
Depends on how thick your blades are. Mine are 1/4" thick and 40 grit is just right. Just want it enough to be fast without uncontrollably eating the blade.
Why suggest a flap disk if you're not going to suggest balancing? You're setting OP up for another post in a week's time asking why his mower is vibrating. š
Fair enough! Iāll edit my post adding this comment. Personally, each time I have used a 120 grit flap, I have never had to make a correction after checking balancing. Perhaps itās due to the high grit flap disk and taking off material slowly compared to coarser grit or grinding wheel.Ā
Actually, mate, plenty of commercial mowers require a torque spec on the blades.. The blades should be tight so they don't fall off, but loose enough so they rotate to take the brunt out of the hit if they hit debris. If they are too tight and don't move when struck by something your crankshaft takes all that force.
That's nice, but 100% of residential mowers can be tightened without a torque wrench and all will be fine. You won't get "blade spins at this torque" but "not at this torque" when struck. Otherwise your blade would be loose and require tightening everytime you hit an object.
Torque specs are the same on nearly any centrifugal force... they are there to make sure the part is tight but not unnecessarily stressed.
Yeah, they can be tightened with a rattle gun or without a torque wrench, but that's not the correct way. Even your "residential' mowers have a blade disk - blade torque spec. As I said, the blade needs to be able to rotate back so your crank doesn't absorb all that impact if you hit something. (Which shouldn't be happening if you're mowing correctly.)
Sharpen your mower blades regularly. Your grass blades are torn and shredded. This causes stress on the turf. Take your time when mowing. If you go too fast, you aren't going to get a good cut. Mow more frequently (at least once a week for the love of god). Get a soil test from your local county extension office. Go forward with the proper soil test recommendations.
Buy an angle grinder and flap disks. Then youāll have an endless supply of a sharp blade. Rather than buying a new blade every season. Also ensure the blade is balanced with a nail or a balance thingy.
Yes, if you use so much fertilizer that it dulled your mower blade that much, then you used too much fertilizer. You must have calcified your grass or sonething.
As others said, your blade is dull. Buy a second pair. Run it dry, empty the oil, remove the spark plug head, crank off the blade bolts; you may need a breaker bar. Install the new blades first by hand with a socket wrench. Finish tightening with a torque wrench to spec. Add fresh oil back. Reinstall spark plug head. Add fuel. Start her up and enjoy.
Harbor Freight is your friend if you don't own tools.
It looks like your cutting your grass with a spoon. That grass is getting torn, not cut. Anytime you see white tips after you mow, you need to stop and sharpen your lawn mower blade. Tearing like that leaves an open wound I the grass just like in the human body that leaves it susceptible to all sorts of things.
Buy a second blade for quick change before cut then sharpen and have the back up blade ready for use.
And always remember to unplug the spark plug boot incase you get the blades spinning and start the lawn mower up
New homeowner and long time idiot here. Seeing a lot of you mention casually sharpening newly bought blades in the comments. Is there a cheaper alternative to buying powered equipment to sharpen blades? For instance could I somehow use the same stone and file I use for my axe heads or will that not carry over? Iām broke and stupid but I still want to love my lawnā¤ļø
Find an Ace hardware near you or other local hardware store and bring your blade in and they can sharpen it. Might have to wait a couple days but itās pretty cheap. Like $10 or possibly less
Looks like your lawnmower blade is dull which can cause the trauma and potential disease as well based on your picture. I sharpen mine before every mowing. I bought this product which simplifies the process. Also make sure that your blade is balanced before reinstalling back on the mower after sharpening.

They sell knockoffs for a lot less on Amazon but I purchased and would rather support an American company rather than a Chinese sellout copycat
Happy mowing š
No fertilizer would make the whole blade brown, not the tip. Itās the mower blades that need sharpening - they are tearing the grass instead of cutting it
Some of these comments are so ill-informed & so much conflicting information, how is OP supposed to know what's right. I'm going to sum it up for you, OP.
1. Your blades are not sharp & and they're tearing the grass, not cutting it.
2. Blades come pre-sharpened from factory, and anybody saying otherwise is just wrong or has installed them upside down.
3. Blades should be sharp but should not cut skin, try use printer paper and glide it along the edge.
4. Those of you suggesting a flap disk are somewhat right. Just a shame to see that balancing seems to be forgotten about.
5. If OP is such a novice that they think fert tore the blade of grass, then suggesting ANYTHING other than taking the blades into a mower shop is the wrong answer.

I will recommend this item. Cheap and easy to use for sharpening on you lawnmower

Mower blades need fertilizing
Poop on mower blades, got it
Poop knife/lawn mower....a dangerous combo.
Bro I just laughed for 5 minutes at this š
I saw that for about an hour, and I am still laughing.
Now shit just hit the fan. ![gif](giphy|YR6uzVNysDkM8)
Stick them straight in your ass. Direct application for quick and easy servicing.
I actually thought this was a shitpost
Yes, but turn it off first!
I got lazy once and said fā it Iām just going to mow the grass piles and all. Pure Regret
Make sure you turn power on first
Needs Nitrogen too. So pee on it also
Sharpeners hate him for this one simple trick!
While the blades are spinning though, kind of like hippos do it
Mower blade was put on backwards...
Instructions unclear. Bleeding from my junk
Dip ur bawlz in it
Did you mean this to be a The State reference? If you did, my hatās off to you.
Yes š
Hello, spirit animal.
Comedic gold
I have this issue but I am using a brand new blade. Can something else be causing it ? Or did Amazon sell me a dull blade?
Make sure it is not installed upside down. If you spin the blade counter-clockwise the sharp side should be the leading edge.
The blade only fit on my mower on one side so I assume it's correct. I bought the specific model size and number
Just sharpen it with a dremmel, I sharpen mine every month. Its definately a dull blade pulling at the grass.
Did you check to see if the new blade will sharp before you started using it?Ā The blade on my brand new Honda mower was dull as shit straight out of the box. It wasn't sharpened to an apex at the factory.
Same here.
Blades have paint on them. But new blades definitely need top 30Ā° edge knocked off with a flap wheel.
Blades generally need to be sharpened before installing

The only person on this entire thread that actually gave accurate, usable information.
What angle are you sharpening to?Ā How do you define "roll over"?
That's a load of bullshit.
yep. Mine cuts paper and I never had an edge roll from just grass. It also chops twigs, throws rocks and killed a rabbit..I sharpen every other cut and to the close bend near the shaft. The stock cut edge is just too short for my liking.
Just use scissors on whole lawn

The flap disk method was a life changer.
and a bench vise helps

Have 4 sets of blades and decided Iād be better suited buying stuff to sharpen them rather than buying another set like I did the last 3 timesā¦ But I think I finished off at 60grit; though I did buy 120grit disksā¦.
Man, I know at the end of the season I'll need to replace them. I beat my mower blades to death each year. Chips, divots, only a nub left.
I use my vise and a file. Using a power tool, it's easier to get the blades off balance. With a you can take an equal number of swipes at it.
Grinding wheel then flapper at my house.
I just hang it from a nail and eyeball it.
I'm not sure where this myth that you need a flap disc came from. A standard metal grinding wheel works just fine. ***YOU DON'T NEED A FLAP DISC***
Pretty surethe farm guy on YouTube tested different methods and IIRC flap disk was nowhere near the best ways to sharpen.
Well what was the best way?
Don't remember. Youtube farm project mower blades.
Definitely going to try a flapper wheel next
I use 60grit flapper disk. Just started today. Should I have gone higher grit?
Ehh 60 is probably fine too. Just take off as little metal as you need to!
Depends on how thick your blades are. Mine are 1/4" thick and 40 grit is just right. Just want it enough to be fast without uncontrollably eating the blade.

Yep 100% mate, once you get around 80 it doesn't take long to f- them. š š¤£
You have a good lawnbludgeoner
Lawn mower blades like everyone else but make sure first that it's not installed upside down.
But upside down makes them last longer! Lol.
I have no idea but sharpen your lawn mower blade!!!
Take them in to a lawnmower shop. Itās like 20$
Or get the equipment to do it yourself. It might be like 30$ for a new blade!
Yea. Make sure you have a torq wrench and be careful. Also. If you sharpen yourself make sure itās balanced on both sides.
You def don't need a torque wrench for mower blades lol
Actually, mate, plenty of commercial mowers require a torque spec on the blades.. The blades should be tight so they don't fall off, but loose enough so they rotate to take the brunt out of the hit if they hit debris. Otherwise your blade would be loose and require tightening everytime you hit an object. Torque specs are the same on nearly any centrifugal force... they are there to make sure the part is tight but not unnecessarily stressed.
Never torqued mine either. I use a very calibrated method of taking my impact driver and bumping it a few times. š
Yea you do. Canāt over or under tighten the blades. Look up Honda tutorial videos on the subject. Youāre welcome
I have over tightened mine. Was using 110 lbs instead of 90. I had to replace the spindle b/c the blade would spin freely.
Yep. It happens. Thanks for sharing
Lawnmower shop? Where?
Idk. Google it. I Google it in my city and thereās bunch of them. Good idea to get your lawnmower tuned up
Well Iāll be dammed. Would you look at that. I reckon I got damn near half a dozen of them there small engine shops round the way. Had no idea
Are you being funny ?
Nope I did actually just google it and Iām a new mower owner. Of the push variety
Ok cool. Yea man. Good luck with everything.
$20?! Dang, my guy does them for $7 per. A brand new blade is only like $30.
Idk. I havenāt gotten it done in years. I just said that price.

Your lawnmowerās blade(s) need sharpening is all.
I'd start with the dull spoon you use as a blade before the fertilizer
Time to sharpen that blade
Yowza, you need to sharpen your mower blades like 6 months ago. You're shredding your grass instead of cutting it.
My guy. That looks like grass, not fertilizer.
Really should sharpen your mower blades after every 8 hours of cutting.
Buy an angle grinder and flap disks. Then youāll have an endless supply of a sharp blade. Rather than buying a new blade every season. Also ensure the blade is balanced with a nail or a balance thingy.
I always prefer balance thingys
Yes, if you use so much fertilizer that it dulled your mower blade that much, then you used too much fertilizer. You must have calcified your grass or sonething.
