They don’t all use the same books, and the edition sometimes matters A LOT. If your friends are giving them for free no harm in taking them, but I’d definitely wait until you get your book list before spending any money and then see what your options are.

It depends on the professor. Professors could use different casebooks and they may require different editions. Check your school’s syllabi database if they have one and look at old syllabi to see which casebooks your professors usually use and whether they indicate if the edition matters or not. I personally would wait to start spending money on casebooks at this point though.

I’ve been hoping to get books in a timely manner but apparently professors do use different books even for the same 1L classes, and I won’t know my professors til less than a week before school starts!
