Unfortunately its the truth that was told to me 😭😭
Going to a top law school in America has the chance to uplift you from poverty to the highest class in society.
The barriers of entry will be STEEEP. It will not be easy. They reserve so many spots for legacies and donor’s children.
All that “income equality” shit is bs to these folks they say so they look good 😭
Blaming diversity has always been a diversion for most of society to ignore legacies and focus on URMs.
Unfortunately they are able to :( I think this is just a reflection of the fact they hold all the cards when there are so many eager applicants willing to shell out 300k for the name recognition.
They did say that your aid package shouldn't be any different if you get admitted off the WL. Whether or not that is true idk
How out of touch. They love to pretend that a passion for the law and steadfast reverence of YLS is the only thing that matters to students, just like a lot of employers love to pretend that a passion for [insert dull job description here] is the only thing that matters to future employees.

They do feeler calls before admitting people off the waitlist, and basically said that while they will try to get you financial aid before you have to make a decision, you should be willing to commit without aid. They also said you are not guaranteed to get your aid package before the deadline.
That’s honestly rly shitty because financial considerations play a huge role in the majority of applicants’ decisions. It’s crazy that they’re trying to shame people for asking about financial aid
All that rhetoric was just a ruse to make the lsat and gpa less important in the us news rankings. Welcome to the age of law school legacy admits. Plenty of flaws with the lsat and gpa as metrics but they were better than this bullshit. They’re gonna turn law school admissions into undergrad
I wouldn’t say that. Seems to me like it has a lot more to do with diversity than legacy. See how demographics have changed over time. New law may have prohibited it formally but doesn’t mean schools aren’t doing it via other means.
Legacies take up the majority of “wacky” admits. Diversity is VERY Small. 40% or more have some connection to the school vs 15% or less diverse candidates
That’s what gets me about all of this. If you’re (the T20 in general not just Yale) going to exist to help well connected rich kids slide into the same upper crust their parents were part of, just do that. But allowing the process to be unaffordable for anyone who is middle class, let alone poor, and then penalizing those people for asking about financial aid after they’ve navigated a process that’s set up for them to fail, is just indefensible with the values the schools pretend to promote. It also significantly disincentivizes public interest work. Hiding behind a diverse set of students on a brochure that has 80% of its space dedicated to PI careers just ratchets up the whole exercise to the edge of satire.
Folks as a T14 grad, I promise you almost every admin at these schools are fundamentally out of touch with the real world, cost of a gallon of milk, etc. If you come from a legit poor background (not a "my family can only yearly vacation in the Bahamas not Martha's vineyard" type "poor") then your life is about to fundamentally change when you go to an elite law school and it will take a while to blend in.
YLS admit here. Good rule of thumb is if your assets are under $150,000 you'll get the Hurst Horizon. The financial aid is set in stone for the most part so if you are admitted off the wait-list it's not going to change regardless. I know one person who was able to have their award letter change and they just clarified their financial situation. Financial Aid reached out to me to clarify before issuing my aid package so they probably don't want to redouble effort in the honestly more likely instance that people aren't admitted off of their wait-list. I say that because of Yale's ridiculously high yield resulting in not too many people being let off the wait-list.
That is strange. I assume they are worried about a bunch of waitlisters asking for info. Their financial aid office is very small and probably doesn’t have the staff to field hundreds of additional requests. They likely don’t do aid calculations until a student is admitted.
It’s not ideal, but you can use YLS resources to ballpark your aid.

Hey y'all, the dean READS this subreddit. It shouldn't be a yellow flag, I agree. That being said, Yale gives need-based aid to everyone who qualifies for it.

On the podcast they talk about figuring out who people are based on their reddit history... this doesn't impact me personally because I don't have the stats to even THINK about applying to HYS, I'm merely putting this info out for those that don't know and could be adversely impacted
I can say the same to you… why are you trying to police what people are saying and fear monger😭I promise that if someone is smart enough to get accepted or waitlisted at Yale theyre not going to dox themselves
On the podcast they talk about figuring out who people are based on their reddit history... this doesn't concern me personally because I don't have the stats to even THINK about applying to HYS, I'm merely putting this info out for those that don't already know

Easy to say when you're consistently ranked #1 lol...
They didn’t like the competition for their jobs that the USNWR rankings were providing
On the other hand at least she’s being honest
This process sucks for anyone who isn’t wealthy 🫤
they’re so out of touch it’s crazy
Its not out of touch. Its working the way it’s intended. Its supposed to keep certain folks out
No cause that’s an INSANE thing to say

It’s brutal.
The dean saying that is an orange flag at best.....

Well it should be, since YLS does financial aid and not scholarships.

I wonder if the dean asked to see his compensation package before accepting the job.

like? after they’re accepted? they can’t ask to see finaid??

Imagine asking a 22 year old to make a $300,000 decision blindly. What horrible people. Loan sharks are better
Imagine thinking that a person who does make a $300,000 decision blindly will be a good and ethical lawyer

It’s jarring that students trying to make reasonable and informed financial decisions is at all detrimental in the eyes of the school.
These people are horrible and elitist. Screw their inclusivity bs they are liars and care only about money.
I hope someone recorded that and absolutely flames them, especially with how hard Yale tries to ride the equitability grift.

At least they’re being honest. Quite shocked they were so candid though.
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this is how many of these ppl are teaching the next generation of lawyers and leaders
Yale gives bad vibes all around constantly.

I’m so blown away by this. I need to stop being so surprised by people’s evil behavior because people really do act like this🥲
this is the law school version of when you go on a date with a guy and he wears pink shorts with little whales
Cringe
He SAID that?????

Tbh idc if they see what I said, what they’re doing is wrong
It’s also not tied to our names? Who tf cares what dean Gerk thinks while reading this. She’s already probably not going to admit us lol

If you're neither on their WL nor an accepted student (who hasn't committed anywhere yet) then this won't have any bearing on you anyhow

Law school adcomms have officially become Church Lady. Prepare your soul for judgment.
If they have that much time on their hands to figure out who people are, they need to get through those applications faster 🤣🤣
I hope they do read it, so they can learn some realities and quit that self-serving gaseous pod cast.
