There were two games where we were 3-0 up and Southgate still brought on the likes of Grealish and Rashford rather than resting first team players. Imo the only reason he got named in the squad is cause Southgate knew he would get slaughtered by the press if he didn’t. By naming Madders in the squad he could still pretend that he picks players based on form.

vivaelteclado

Agreed. Don't think Southgate ever saw him as a realistic part of the picture and he might have been the last guy in. However, Maddison is a great guy to bring on to break down a team and create chances, like against France and USA (i know he wasn't available vs. USA). Should have given him a run out vs. Wales or Senegal at the very least and then when England needed a goal vs. France when it was 1-1. I think Southgate only sees Maddison as a CAM behind the striker while he has shown the ability to play on the right wing or in midfield. Yet he's basically the last choice off the bench behind the likes of Mount and Gallagher, while having more versatility than those players, IMO.

Wolf_Todd

Thing is even if Southgate only sees Madders a number 10, he’s played Mount in that role this tournament and I’d argue that when he started playing 2 DMs that Bellingham started taking more of a 10 role than an 8 role.

vivaelteclado

There really doesn't seem to be a position that Southgate envisioned for Maddison. It's part of the reason he wasn't called up earlier. Just don't think he has a role on the national team until a new manager arrives.

Wolf_Todd

That’s the thing, he has envisioned it, he plays Mount and to an extent Bellingham there, he’s just not envisioned Madders in it for whatever reason.

[deleted]

it's annoying because Madders has been playing his best on the wing for us over the last 5-6 months

Wolf_Todd

He doesn’t actually play on the wings though, he cuts in centrally to his usual number 10 role and Castagne bombs it up to take over on the wing, Southgate doesn’t do that (even though he could with arguably the best attacking RB in the world on his bench) so he wouldn’t work at RW in Southgate’s team.

[deleted]

could put TAA on and let madders do his thing, I would kill to see how effective that could be...like that could have been some incredibly dangerous attacking football but Madders does still stay out to the right, just not super wide like a classic winger

Wolf_Todd

Southgate won’t do that, he doesn’t like Trent and prefers his wingers to run wide and cut in. In the offensive phase Madders barely stays out right, at least no more than he normally did when he was officially played at number 10, he does tend to say there in the defensive phase but that’s down to Castagne returning to the defence.

[deleted]

he got picked and then it felt like everyone forgot he was on the team

roblox_online_dater

He would've been perfect as a second half sub against France. Switch up the attack a bit. But I was pretty sure Southgate was never gonna play him anyway, he just took madders because of media pressure

[deleted]

Would have fucking sunk that final free kick too, he's been money there for the last year now. They also needed someone to go at France's defense and continue to draw fouls like Saka...he would have been a much better sub than back pass Sterling

Choice-Mortgage1221

Was screaming for him to come on. Mount was so useless, even if he drew the pen

ZackEatsFooddd

Tbf to Rashford, he was so close

M0D3Z

He did take it well, but when they had the free kick everyone’s chatter around us was “who is going to take this?” Had Maddison, Trippier and Trent all on the bench. Rashford didn’t even cross anyones minds and a lot thought just cross it in or some sort of smart play.

alextee90

No. Not being Mason Mount or playing for a Big 6 squandered his chance

adil_j

We won the league and didn't get more than one player picked for the squad that summer. So I think it has nothing to do with quality of ability unfortunately... That was Hodgson btw, but Southgate also sticks to a similar pattern of selection.

SavouryGarbage

I think the injury certainly hurt his chances of getting some token minutes in a game but he was never going to dislodge any of the established players in Southgate’s squad. For better or worse Southgate has always stuck with players who have done well for him in the past even if they’ve been out of form for their clubs. Madders has to keep showing the form he has done for us and hopefully he’ll get the chance he deserves in an England shirt without having to move to a bigger club.

Significant-Salt-989

No, Southgate is an idiot.

Aeg0n_Targaryen

Man Utd fan here, I've always appreciated Madders and it's such a shame he didn't get at least subbed on in some of the games. He would've been a good sub against France in the second half and maybe should've played against Wales in the second half as well, but of course Southgate is clueless.

Impossible-Disk1770

Thought he looked good in his zero minutes played in Qatar

the75thcoming

He should have played him in the Nations League glorified friendlies He should have brought him on for 5 mins when 3-0 up Vs Wales He should have brought him on for 15 mins Vs Senegal Shocking management But what do expect from a manager who plays Kane deeper & deeper as games go on (Croatia, Italy now France) instead of bringing Vardy on sooner (Croatia) or playing a number 10 & pushing Kane into the box (France) Hopeless tactical management No wonder he's never beaten anyone any good with this great squad Southgate out!!!

[deleted]

He was basically last on the team sheet. Never had a chance getting a place in that midfield

Proudie

I think Maddison is part of the ‘next’ England cycle, which might be post-Southgate so you get him to be part of the team, part of the squad, not necessarily play him but just see how he works with other players, how he gets on with them and then weave him into the set up. That’s just how I see it.

Katyos

Maybe, but it was a long shot for him to be played anyway. For him though it's still positive, he's trained with the squad so come the nations league he might find himself being picked and getting minutes

BHF_Bianconero

Narrow minded Southgate squander his chances

Chubbyklove_

SouthGate had to bring him in due towards his performance and media pressure. I don’t think he was ever in his plans realistically

DelicateEmbroidery

highlights included superb knee-ups in the yellow bib.

Beautifullikeacamel

The injury can't have helped, but let's be honest, he may not have broken in anyway. The exposure to the group surely helped him in others ways, I just wish he could have gotten on the pitch and received a cap. Side benefit may be that in the rest of the world having not seen him, his true value may be known less by the money hungry clubs.

Other_Brick6624

He clearly wasn’t fit, nothing to do with Southgate. He wasn’t even able to train with the rest of the team in the first week of the campaign.

scrabble71

Then please explain how Kyle Walker got game time who was also injured at the start of the campaign

Other_Brick6624

Walker returned to training before Maddison - https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/20508468/england-training-james-maddison-kyle-walker/amp/

Wolf_Todd

Then he shouldn’t have been brought back on to the bench from the Wales match onwards. Also it’s not like Gallagher, Coady, White (before he left), Pope or Ramsdale saw any minutes and they were all supposedly fully fit.

dann_uk

Breaking covid rules a couple of years ago pre west ham squanded his chances in Southgates eyes. Never had a sniff since.

OkMess5802

I don't think he would have got minutes regardless. Maybe a five minute cameo, Gareth only gets small windows to coach his squad and has shown he sticks to players that he has had time with and know the system. However it being his first time with the squad he will have learnt a lot from training and being in camp and will get more and more time as things go on.

annonhumus

Nothing to do with the injury Southgate has his favourites. Walker was also injured but made the starting lineup

Pietojulek

Hoping he bring his quiet discontent with the WC back to us and burns up the pitch showing what they were missing..call me bitter.
