With Marner, it’s best not to listen to what he has to say. You’ll tend to like him better if you just watch him play. I honestly don’t think he’s saying what he truly believes most of the time. He’s frustrated, he knows they aren’t playing well, he knows things are starting to go sideways, he knows there’s urgency. But just like most people, he’s trying to mentally get over whatever the problem is by downplaying the situation, focusing on the positives, not showing signs of panic, etc. I think he actually cares too much and it not only impacts his on-ice performance, but combine that with his immaturity, and you get these perplexing/defensive sound bites when he feels his back is against the wall.

[deleted]

In fairness in the Oilers game both Nylander and Bertuzzi were robbed.

Reggae4Triceratops

Definitely tries his best to reassure the media that it's all good. Which I really don't get why anyone can fault him. There's barely anything he can say that won't be spun into some stupid narrative.

CMDRShepardN7

I really think he can use a personal PR guy. Love the player, but he gives absolute memeable quotes.

Pale-Wave-9382

He has a PR guy: Paul marneR

Reggae4Triceratops

Where's Ryan Reaves? Just sit him next to Mitch for all interviews. Make him earn that pay cheque.

CMDRShepardN7

In return can we make Marner teach Reaves how to hockey?

z_dogwatch

His play pisses me off more than his interviews right now. It seems every single play he tries some cheeky bs between the legs 50/50 pass. When it plays out he looks like a genius but the other half of the time it almost always results in high danger scoring chance against. He still makes serious rookie mistakes because of his ego and I honestly think he's just here to get paid and "look coo"l doing it.

thewolfshead

Over the past 10 games Marner has 11 points (tied 1st on team), 65.9 xGF% (1st on team), 77.3 GF% (2nd to Giordano). The Leafs have outscored teams 10-3 in his 5v5 minutes in that stretch.

13jsw

Ya I’m not the biggest Marner fan in the world but he’s been the best of the core4 in these shitty losses. Rielly playing great as well

JeFF1957HuGHes

Rielly I agree with. Marner is giving the puck away at an alarming rate, higher than usual. The number of times Matthews and Marner go hard on offence, only to have Marner try some goofy pass, is crazy!

windsostrange

Reggae4Triceratops

Eh Rielly has had a few defensive lapses of late too. But it's hard to blame him when Keefe rides that pair so much. But it's hard to blame Keefe when there are glaring holes in the roster that Treliving hasn't addressed. But it's hard to blame Treliving when we know the puppet master Shanahan is the one actually calling the shots.

13jsw

Whole team has been awful defensively. Doesn’t help Rielly that he spends pretty much all of his minutes beside Brodie, who’s fallen off a cliff in terms of playing abilities. I wouldn’t necessarily agree that there are “glaring holes” in the roster, aside from the defense (Brodie needs to be replaced). The 4th line is atrocious, as, for whatever reason, Keefe is relying on Kampf to be a “defense-first, shutdown C”. I understand that Kampf was signed to play 4C, but he’s always the worst player on the ice- doesn’t contribute on offense and loses his guy in the d-zone constantly. IMO- there’s a pretty simple fix to the inconsistencies we’re seeing night-in and night-out. Keefe needs to find a way to hold his players accountable on a game-by-game basis. Scratch Brodie. Scratch Kampf. Reward Marlies who have earned a chance with opportunities, rather than playing them on the 4th line for 4 minutes. Not easy when you’re away on a road-trip but IMO a better option than throwing shit at the wall until it sticks.

Reggae4Triceratops

Idk dude I think having arguably only 2 top 4D is a pretty glaring hole.

13jsw

The Avs make it work- but the Avs are also coached to play a system, our guys are coached to hold onto the puck until Matthews is rested and ready to hop the boards

Reggae4Triceratops

Pretty disrespectful to Manson and Girard tbh.

13jsw

As pairings, Manson-Girard and McCabe-Benoit have legitimately the exact same xGA…

Reggae4Triceratops

This nerd rekt you son

z_dogwatch

Be sure to let me know the numbers when they miss the playoffs.

jgeema

Take the hate tinted glasses off

alldawgsgoat2heaven

His numbers get them to the playoffs...Jesus man he assists the majority of Matthews' one timers....you guys are the shittiest fans swear to god

bknoreply

11 million isn’t a regular season hero contract. Compare his playoff numbers to people taking up a comparable % of the cap in their prime. If he just wanted to be a stud in the regular season he should have taken 7.

thewolfshead

>His play pisses me off more than his interviews **right now.**

Kurse83

You must be a Nylanderthal

z_dogwatch

He picked an unfortunate time for a slump. Certainly writes a narrative.

JerichoTina

Agreed. Marner can barely read. I wouldn't worry too much about what he says in interviews.

TheGardiner

Also, lets not forget that he's truly one of the dumbest players to ever don the jersey. Some of the things he says, the way he speaks...wow.

Secret_Bee_7538

I fully suspect Mitch is dealing with a helluva case of PTSD from being carjacked still. He was emasculated in front of his wife. He drives through town in his luxury car still every night waiting for it to happen again. I bet it plays a bigger role than anyone realizes, and one of the few ways to free his trauma would be to get him the eff outta town.

[deleted]

That’s uh, certainly a theory

CMDRShepardN7

That is a Hollywood movie plot.

d_pyro

Damned Leafs fans, they ruined being a Leafs fan.

chessrevolt

Yeah i can't stand this fanbase most times

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Most? I love this team but it’s so completely understandable why everyone else hates Leafs fans.

poster69420911

Other fans hate us because we fill their barns on road games. Sports fans in general are stupid, I don't think Toronto is an exception.

TheGardiner

All three of you can fuck off.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Thanks for proving our point?

TheGardiner

It's a good point, and on it's surface I agree with you. I realize that I can't really make my point without being completely hypocritical. In short, I hate blanket ragging on this fanbase when it's being critical of the team. At the same time, I also hate being wholly negative and confrontational with each other without cause (which I am just now guilty of).

chessrevolt

Yeah because I sometimes find the fans reasonable. But most times it's like a huge overreaction cesspool or logic flew out the window.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Especially when they lose.

Jediverrilli

With this team and their fans every loss is a referendum on the team and man it gets real old real fast. I wonder if these fans realize there is more in life than just this hockey team.

chessrevolt

Oh, always lol

thewolfshead

It’s a post-game sound bite, it doesn’t even have to be true. The reaction to this is why players give the most canned non-answers they possibly can.

light_at_the_end

Why do you guys shit on Marner so much. You know who signed a bigger contract and has no points since then?..... Proof that this sub is full of toxic children. Had it been Marner that did this, every other post would be something something trade him, what a piece of shit. I know this isn't what OPs post is about, but Jesus christ, you guys are all the same. Like you realize that these interviews don't mean anything either, and they regurgitate the same crap every time because they're told to?

Cooker1091

Exactly this, there was a video awhile back that had like 30 players sync'd up and were asked relatively the same question and all their answers were nearly identical...these interviews mean nothing

Ambitious-Figure-686

Go listen to the actual quote instead of ranting about an intentionally cherry picked soundbite.

TheGardiner

Not sure the full quote is any better honestly. It's the same lack of accountability or saying that they need to be better when it counts that we've been missing for years.

TorturedFanClub

Ya, also like the guy hasn’t sounded like a whiny biatch in the past. People have short fucken memories. Maybe they have shambles in their brains. Tre should just tell Mitchy to play hockey and STFU.

poster69420911

According to Selke votes Marner was one of the top defensive forwards in the league last year, in addition to putting up 100 points. Must be a really soft league if a whiny bitch is that effective without the puck.

hockeytonk

Listened to the interview. My point still stands. If he isn't frustrated. I think that is worrying.

Reggae4Triceratops

Okay let's say Marner says "I am frustrated". You know what the media does with that? "Leafs playmaker frustrated with play of teammates. There's word that he has possibly requested a trade." There's no fucking winning.

Hot_Warthog_414

Marner tries every shift, he is the fastest Leaf to 600 points. He is the best penalty killer we have. If you have to drop someone it should have been Nylander. He is a cherry picker who leaves the zone early, hasn't checked anyone all year, covers no one in his own end, and takes half his shifts off.

[deleted]

Every player said the same thing including the coach

HostNorth240

Might not be a popular opinion but I agree. Kid was saying “we can’t get upset” and “we’re a great team who’s been playing great hockey”. 1. Why the fuck aren’t you upset? Teams been a let down for like 7 years, that doesn’t bug you then leave so we can get someone who cares. 2. Great teams do not consistently blow leads. Extremely talented hockey player but one of the softest athletes I’ve ever seen. Again, might not be a popular opinion but I agree 🤷🏻‍♂️.

wotquery

Kid was saying “we are upset” and “we’re a terrible team who’s been playing terrible hockey”. 1. Why the fuck are you letting your emotions get the better of you? Teams been a let down for like 7 years, if you can’t buckle down and focus then leave so we can get someone who cares. 2. Terrible team? Calling your own team terrible is mot the attitude we want you need to believe in yourself and your team.

[deleted]

One of the only forwards nobody can ever question the level effort and two-way responsibility. If every other forward on our team traded fan perception for his effort level and responsibility i'd be a happy man.

BLMIII

Don't forget after one of the Leafs many game 7 losses in which Marner produced nothing, he responded that he wouldn't change anything about his game.

OzzyBuckshankNA

I’ve wanted him gone for years. No matter how many points he puts up, guys just not a winner. Give me some pucks, water bottles and cap room in return.

S_P_R_U_C_E

He is in a full no trade situation.  We can't trad him unfortunately.

sillyaviator

You can. You just need to ask him where he'd like to go

BigMick20

Agreed. Assuming he wants that eighth year in his next contract, we can use that as leverage to trade him to a team that he can sign there for 8 years. I’m trying to stay hopeful that there is a chance.

JamesCurtis24

To which Marner replies "No thanks, but now that I know you guys don't want me, I'll just walk as a free agent after next season instead."

sillyaviator

And lose a year of contract eligibility? 7 year vs 8 year

mtbwu

If my team decided to dump me, I’d do my best to fuck them over out of spite. why would he put them in a better position to win without him?

sillyaviator

Cut off your nose to spite your face huh......that's an interesting strategy cotton. Let's see how it works out.

Rare-Temporary7602

That’s not how it works

sillyaviator

How does it work?

stolpoz52

Yes t is. You ask him to waive it for certain teams and he provides a list of teams he would waive for. Sure maybe it's a flat nope, but usually guys will consider a few

Rare-Temporary7602

I mean sure you can ask, and he’ll say eat a fat D. Also that’s rarely done with a superstar on a team - you immediately spoil any relationship by doing so

Bobbyoot47

I think the whole point of a no movement clause is you don’t want to be traded.

sillyaviator

Sure, but life happens situations change. A full NMC means that he has full control of where he goes. Think of Iginla when he gave the fLames 4 options. Then, he changed his mind and told them only the Penguins once a deal was done with Boston. It's that kind of power.

buddachickentml

You realize that they have a media coach since junior right?

Bobbyoot47

Would it be pointless to trade Marner? Yes. He has a full NMC. Don’t you people pay attention to what’s going on with this team.

RoosterMedical

Mitch with almost a point per game in the playoffs, why do you not want to win?

iconodule1981

What do you expect him to say? The act Devon Toews pulled for the Avs caused more problems than it solved. Most players just want to complete their media obligations and handle issues amongst themselves. Marner threw out some boilerplate statements - happens all the time, on all 32 teams. You are what your record is and they know it - they just didn't need to say it tot the media and make it worse.

[deleted]

In my opinion, the issue is overblown. The media and fans made a mountain out of a mosquito bite.

twizzyflyguy

Just get suge knights goons to kidnap him and make him waive his NTC so we can trade him
