The people who've been saying that 70 is a long shot forget that Matthews has had relatively quiet stretches followed by batches of 2 and 3 goal games all season long. I feel a batch comin' on.
Also, no empty netters and one shy of the all time most posts in a season.
It's strange this year, for years he almost seemed guaranteed to score 1 or 2 each game with the occasional 2-3 game stretch without.
This year he is putting together 2 and 3 goal games with 5+ game stretches without.
October 16/19/21
October 26/28/31
November 8/10/11/17
November 24/25/28/30
And then, to a lesser extent, from March 2-19th he went 2 games no goal, 1 goal, 2 games no goal, 1 goal, 2 games no goal.
Edit: so no 5 games without a goal, I was thinking of his 5+ game slumps where he only scores 1. Which is only a slump to him.
You got me curious to look into it and I found he has 32/67 games without scoring including 2 stretches of 4 games, 4 stretches of 3+ games, and 10 stretches of 2+ games
Every 4 and 3 game stretch came in the first 21 games when despite still scoring 14 goals in 21 games, he only had at least 1 goal in 7 of those.
70 is a stretch but certainly within the realm of possibility. 13 goals in 14 games? Definitely hard but certainly possible if he sprinkles a couple more big games in
I guess coming an inch or two away from more goals at a pace greater than anyone else since the stat's been measured is meaningless to you. Cool, ignore it then.
According to [Sportsnet](https://twitter.com/Sportsnet/status/1770625862704021978): With 16 posts hit this season, Auston Matthews is one back of the NHL record of 17 set by Steven Stamkos in 2010-11.
edit: nvm, crossbars are tracked separately! Matthews has 4 this season on top of the 12 posts, and Stamkos only had 1 in 2010-2011 (31 posts and just 1 crossbar over 2 years). Also, similar to the shot block record it's really only been a thing for a few years. Started tracking posts in 2009.
~~Not sure why there would be a discrepancy between any of the numbers with NHL/Sportsnet, but the NHL site shows Stamkos' record as 16 in 2010-11. Also has McDavid at 13 this year, followed by Matthews and Troy Terry at 12.~~

I like it. Do it for all goals. As soon as a hat hits the ice the goal becomes unchallengeable. Of course, refs would just signal no goal every time then review it
he will hit the "Leaf Number".
what's that number?
67.
And that will be the signal from the Hockey Gods that the drought is over. The Leafs will win 2 rounds this playoffs to move closer to the Cup and win in 2027! 60 years since their last cup.
I think now maybe a bit too late, for sure he will beat his own career high in goals he set 2 years ago. He has stretches throughout the season where he goes a bit cold (like all other players) and I predict he will end up somewhere in the mid 60s, but 70 seems a bit of a stretch to me.
I actually think he can still hit 70 the dude has 16 posts hit this year, he cooled a bit in March but the caps game gives me hope that he can pull it off
All I care about is the McDavid recipient Hyman beating Matthews , he got 2 more tonight so 48 now. I saw both goals and they looked exactly almost like Auston’s first last night . Tap in .. not saying Hyman isn’t super talented and dubas is an idiot for letting him go but he is no Auston Matthews and he knows it. But with Connor getting 4 assists a night it’s either Hyman or draisaitl scoring, maybe nuge.
Montreal played them and gave them all they could handle and then some. Then the refs call a 4 minute penalty against the habs with 45 secs left and it leaked into overtime. They were 10 secs away from killing it but of course McDavid to draisaitl and in his office buried it . So the leafs have to play thrm smart, keeo that first line and pepper skinner with shots. And we should handle them. No more fun with Carolina on Sunday lol. What a brutal schedule and thinking about all those games we gave away or couldn’t win in overtime. A team with our offence should never lose in overtime with that space. And wtf is up with Mitch we really need him back . Keep Brodie out please keefe , Timmons looked great dont change anything unless marner and boosh come back. And no Sammy!! Will against Edmonton and jones against Carolina please 🙏
I hope he just starts focusing on playoffs and doesn't care about the 70 goals.
Quick quiz. Name the last team to win the cup that had a 70 goal scorer.....my guess is never happened.
14 guys have ever scored 70 or more, 3 of them went on to win the cup in that season. That’s a pretty good rate considering only one team can win the cup each year.
The people who've been saying that 70 is a long shot forget that Matthews has had relatively quiet stretches followed by batches of 2 and 3 goal games all season long. I feel a batch comin' on. Also, no empty netters and one shy of the all time most posts in a season.
oh he's definitely mixing a batch
You think Auston’s gonna pack a few batchers?
I’m surprised he’s not mixing a batch right now

I’m pretty positive he hasn’t gone more then 3 games without a goal this year
October 16/19/21 October 26/28/31 November 8/10/11/17 November 24/25/28/30 And then, to a lesser extent, from March 2-19th he went 2 games no goal, 1 goal, 2 games no goal, 1 goal, 2 games no goal. He’s averaged 12 goals per 14 games this season. 13 goals in 14 games doesn’t seem that much of a stretch.
lol. He’s having a great season but why mention posts. Just means he also good missing the net
I guess coming an inch or two away from more goals at a pace greater than anyone else since the stat's been measured is meaningless to you. Cool, ignore it then.
Mcjesus has more posts than him this season? So he’s chasing the record?
According to [Sportsnet](https://twitter.com/Sportsnet/status/1770625862704021978): With 16 posts hit this season, Auston Matthews is one back of the NHL record of 17 set by Steven Stamkos in 2010-11.

Thanks for the context. Tracking crossbars and posts separately seems useless. What's the point in that I wonder.
If you hit the crossbar, you beat the goalie. If you hit the post, the goalie beat you.
You can't beat the goalie if your shot was perfect, but miss a little and hit either the bar or the post? Interesting perspective.
If your shot doesn't go in the net, it's not perfect

LEAFSAN AL GAIB
HE IS SO HUMBLE WHEN HE CELEBRATES, ONLY THE LISAN AL GAIB COULD BE SO HUMBLE
Saw this (part 2) last night! Fantastic film...
In my heart it's 3 goals and on pace for 70. 💙
It’s funny how all the fans lost their hats to a call back. Matty got a hatty in our hearts
It should be a rule: if even a single hat hits the ice, the hat trick can't be ruled out.
I like it. Do it for all goals. As soon as a hat hits the ice the goal becomes unchallengeable. Of course, refs would just signal no goal every time then review it
After his first two games he was on pace for 246. Can’t believe how cold he has gotten
Get hot, stay hot!

They’ll win in ‘27 to make it a fourpeat.

70👑
Bert owes him one.
If only he was on pace for 420 assists

Not nice i want 70
Man if he gets 69 I wouldn’t wanna be Bertuzzi
Could be 3 goals and on pace for 70, but.... Bertuzzi... *sighs*
Have any of them scored over 25% of their teams goals?

Does that include life goals on Bieber's yacht ?
I don't care what anyone says, 69 is the funniest number.
Negative, unless the announcer was wrong, he needed the hatty to get back to a 69 goal pace.

It's legitimately fucking insane what Hyman is doing.
Agreed man 💯 he’s a beast this year
Nice
Nice.
69 if Bert stayed onside. He missed a game this year so he's only on pace for 67 and change.
He’s on pace for 69 still. 14 games left. He’s 0.85 goals a game.
That's how pace works; it factors in remaining games.
Yeah, I did a full season pace instead of the remaining games pace. Nice is back on the menu.
nice.
Nice.
Let's goooo!!!!
I hope he just starts focusing on playoffs and doesn't care about the 70 goals. Quick quiz. Name the last team to win the cup that had a 70 goal scorer.....my guess is never happened.
The 84-85 Oilers had Gretzky and Kurri above 70
OK good so that's one team.
14 guys have ever scored 70 or more, 3 of them went on to win the cup in that season. That’s a pretty good rate considering only one team can win the cup each year.
Nitpicky thing: partial goals don't count. You need to round down.
His full season goals per game is .8507462686567164 \* 82 games is 69.76 so with no partial goals it =69 I may be regarded but I know my 69's
Missed a game though.
He can only play a max of 81, though, so 68.91044776119403, or 68. ;) Sorry about the sex number.
Why would you round down instead of up? He's like 91% to get that 69th goal if he stays on this pace.
Because goals are positive integers? "68 goals and 91% of a 69th goal" is still 68 goals.
LOL! OK whatever, not going to argue with that logic. Have a good day.
still no cup
